Abstract:We describe a method to put chiral gauge theories on the lattice. Our method makes heavy use of the effective action for chiral fermions in the continuum, which is in general complex. As an example we discuss the chiral Schwinger model.

Abstract:Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions have been receiving much attention recently. Though quantum field theories with gauge field coupling to chiral fermion suffer from the loss of gauge invariance, it can be consistently quantized[1]. A proper quantum treatment of the gauge degrees of freedom in chiral gauge theories uncovers the presence of the Wess-Zumino effective action exactly[2]. In view of these interests in chiral gauge theories, the study of two-dimensional chiral gauge model on the lattice should prove useful. It is well-known that there will appear the species dubling when we naively discretize a fermion on the lattice[3]. In our approach we shall use Wilson fermion[4] which copes the problem[5]. The Wilson term, however, will break not only the chiral invariance but also the gauge invariance when the chiral gauge field is introduced. Aoki[6] had redrived the nonabelian anomaly with consideration of chiral gauge theory on the lattice and thought the existence of the anomaly may be related with the gauge symmetry breaking due to the Wilson term. It will be shown in follows that the Wess-Zumino effective action and the vector-boson mass as the anomalous generation terms appear due to a nontrivial change in the Wilson term under the chiral transformation in fermion.

Abstract:An application of the particular type of nonlinear operator algebras to spectral problems is outlined. These algebras are associated with a set of one-dimensional self-similar potentials, arising due to the q-periodic closure f_{j+N}(x)=qf_j(qx), k_{j+N}=q^2 k_j of a chain of coupled Riccati equations (dressing chain). Such closure describes q-deformation of the finite-gap and related potentials. The N=1 case corresponds to the q-oscillator spectrum generating algebra. At N=2 one gets a q-conformal quantum mechanics, and N=3 set of equations describes a deformation of the Painleve IV transcendent.

Abstract:While chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) describe a wide range of physical systems, from the standard model to topological quantum matter, the realization of chiral QFTs on a lattice has proved to be difficult due to the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem and the possible presence of quantum anomalies. In this thesis, we use the connection between chiral phases of matter and chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) to define chiral QFTs on a lattice and allow a huge class of exotic field theories to be simulated numerically. Our work builds on the 'mirror fermion' approach to the problem of defining chiral theories on a lattice, which defines chiral field theories as the edge modes of chiral phases. We begin by reviewing the deep connections between chiral phases of matter, chiral field theories, and anomalies. We then develop numerical treatments of an $SU(2)$ chiral field theory, and provide a semiclassically solvable definition of Abelian $2+1$ chiral topological orders. This leads to an exactly solvable definition of chiral $U(1)$ SPT phases with zero correlation length, which we use to extract the edge chiral field theories exactly. These zero-correlation length models are vastly more simple than previous approaches to defining chiral field theories on the lattice.

Abstract:We review the status of our recent work on the gauge-fixing approach to lattice chiral gauge theories. New numerical results in the reduced version of a model with a U(1) gauge symmetry are presented which strongly indicate that the factorization of the correlation functions of the left-handed neutral and right-handed charged fermion fields, which we established before in perturbation theory, holds also nonperturbatively.

Abstract:We define and solve the $\text{U(1)}$ Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory on spacetime lattice, with an emphasis on the chirality of the theory. Realizing Chern-Simons theory on lattice has been a problem of interest for decades, and over the years it has gradually become clear that there are two key points: 1) Some non-topological term, such as a Maxwell term, is necessary -- this is true even in the continuum, but more manifestly on the lattice; 2) the $\text{U(1)}$ gauge field should be implemented in the Villainized form to retain its topological properties. Putting the two ideas together seriously, we show all interesting properties of a chiral Chern-Simons theory are reproduced in an explicitly regularized manner on the lattice. These include the bosonic and fermionic level quantization, the bulk and chiral edge spectrum, the Wilson loop flux attachment (with point-split framing or geometric framing depending on the Maxwell coupling), the Wilson loop spin, the ground state degeneracy, and, most non-trivially, the chiral gravitational anomaly.

Abstract:We construct symmetry-preserving lattice regularizations of 2d QED with one and two flavors of Dirac fermions, as well as the `3450' chiral gauge theory, by leveraging bosonization and recently-proposed modifications of Villain-type lattice actions. The internal global symmetries act just as locally on the lattice as they do in the continuum, the anomalies are reproduced at finite lattice spacing, and in each case we find a sign-problem-free dual formulation.

Interacting chiral fermions on the lattice with matrix product operator norms

Abstract:We develop a Hamiltonian formalism for simulating interacting chiral fermions on the lattice while preserving unitarity and locality and without breaking the chiral symmetry. The fermion doubling problem is circumvented by constructing a Fock space endowed with a semi-definite norm. When projecting our theory on the the single-particle sector, we recover the framework of Stacey fermions, and we demonstrate that the scaling limit of the free model recovers the chiral fermion field. Technically, we make use of a matrix product operator norm to mimick the boundary of a higher dimensional topological theory. As a proof of principle, we consider a single Weyl fermion on a periodic ring with Hubbard-type nearest-neighbor interactions and construct a variational generalized DMRG code to demonstrate that the ground state for large system sizes can be determined efficiently. As our tensor network approach does not exhibit any sign problem, we can add a chemical potential and study real-time evolution.

Lattice Chiral Fermion without Hermiticity

Abstract:Our review of the lattice chiral fermion delves into some critical areas of lattice field theory. By abandoning Hermiticity, the non-Hermitian formulation circumvents the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem while maintaining chiral symmetry, a novel approach. Comparing the Wilson and overlap fermions gives insight into how lattice formulations handle chiral symmetry. The Wilson fermion explicitly breaks chiral symmetry to eliminate doublers. In contrast, the overlap fermion restores a modified form of chiral symmetry using the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We investigate how the (1+1)D Wilson fermion relates to the (1+1)D overlap fermion in the Hamiltonian formulation. This connection could provide a clearer physical understanding of how chiral symmetry manifests at the lattice level. Depending on Hermiticity for efficiency, Monte Carlo methods face unique challenges in a non-Hermitian setting. We investigate how to correctly apply this method to non-Hermitian lattice fermions, which is essential for practical simulations. Finally, the review of topological charge is crucial, as topological features in lattice formulations are strongly connected to chiral symmetry, anomalies, and the index theorem.

Chiral gauge theory at the boundary between topological phases

Abstract:I demonstrate how chiral fermions with an exact gauge symmetry can appear on the d-dimensional boundary of a finite volume (d+1)-dimensional manifold, without any light mirror partners. The condition for the d-dimensional boundary theory to be local is that gauge anomalies cancel and that the volume be large. This can likely be achieved on a lattice and provides a new paradigm for the lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories.

Reviews of Modern Physics

Abstract:The author reviews in a pedagogical fashion some of the recent developments in lattice quantum chromodynamics. This review emphasizes explicit examples and illustrations rather than general proofs and analyses. It begins with a discussion of the heavy-quark potential in continuum quantum chromodynamics. Asymptotic freedom and renormalization-group improved perturbation theory are discussed. A simple dielectric model of confinement is considered as an intuitive guide to the vacuum of non-Abelian gauge theories. Next, the Euclidean form of lattice gauge theory is introduced, and an assortment of calculational methods are reviewed. These include high-temperature expansions, duality, Monte Carlo computer simulations, and weak coupling expansions. A Λ- parameter calculation for asymptotically free-spin models is presented. The Hamiltonian formulation of lattice gauge theory is presented and is illustrated in the context of flux tube dynamics. Roughening transitions, Casimir forces, and the restoration of rotational symmetry are discussed. Mechanisms of confinement in lattice theories are illustrated in the two-dimensional electrodynamics of the planar model and the U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions. Generalized actions for SU(2) gauge theories and the relevance of monopoles and strings to crossover phenomena are considered. A brief discussion of the continuity of fields and topological charge in asymptotically free lattice models is presented. The final major topic of this review concerns lattice fermions. The species doubling problem and its relation to chiral symmetry are illustrated. Staggered Euclidean fermion methods are discussed in detail, with an emphasis on species counting, remnants of chiral symmetry, Block spin variables, and the axial anomaly. Numerical methods for including fermions in computer simulations are considered. Jacobi and Gauss-Siedel inversion methods to obtain the fermion propagator in a background gauge field are reviewed. Langevin, pseudofermion Monte Carlo methods, and random walk methods are discussed, as are proposals for including the fermion determinant in computer simulations. Finally, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice models is discussed. The review ends with brief remarks about present research directions.

Abstract:Recently, lattice formulations of Abelian chiral gauge theory in two dimensions have been devised on the basis of the Abelian bosonization. A salient feature of these 2D lattice formulations is that the gauge invariance is \emph{exactly\/} preserved for anomaly-free theories and thus is completely free from the question of the gauge mode decoupling. In the present paper, we propose a yet another lattice formulation sharing this desired property. A particularly unique point in our formulation is that the vertex operator of the dual scalar field, which carries the vector charge of the fermion and the ``magnetic charge'' in the bosonization, is represented by a ``hole'' excised from the lattice; this is the excision method formulated recently by Abe et al. in a somewhat different context.

Abstract:We investigate a U(1) lattice chiral gauge theory with domain wall fermions and compact gauge fixing. In the reduced model limit, our perturbative and numerical investigations show that there exist no extra mirror chiral modes. The longitudinal gauge degrees of freedom have no effect on the free domain wall fermion spectrum consisting of opposite chiral modes at the domain wall and at the anti-domain wall which have an exponentially damped overlap.

Abstract:We consider fermion-gauge couplings in the Wilson-Yukawa approach for lattice chiral gauge theories. At the leading order of a fermionic hopping parameter expansion we find that the fermion-gauge coupling has a chiral and tree-like structure. We argue that this fermion-gauge coupling remains non-zero in the continuum limit taken in the Higgs phase. Possible fermion-scalar couplings in this approach are considered. We also evaluate the fermion interaction with an external gauge field in the slightly modified model and show that it has a chiral structure in general.

Abstract:We discuss the chiral fermion in the Hamiltonian formalism of lattice gauge theory. Although the naive chiral charge operator does not commute with the Hamiltonian, the commutable one can be defined for the overlap fermion. The eigenvalues of the energy and the chiral charge can be defined simultaneously. We study how the eigenvalue spectrum reflects chiral properties of systems, such as a chiral chemical potential and the axial anomaly. We also show that the Wilson fermion is a chiral fermion in one dimension.

A lattice formulation of Weyl fermions on a single curved surface

Abstract:In the standard lattice domain-wall fermion formulation, one needs two flat domain-walls where both of the left- and right-handed massless modes appear. In this work we investigate a single domain-wall system with a nontrivial curved background. Specifically we consider a massive fermion on a $3D$ square lattice, whose domain-wall is a $2D$ sphere. In the free theory, we find that a single Weyl fermion is localized at the wall and it feels gravity through the induced spin connection. With a topologically nontrivial $U(1)$ link gauge field, however, we find a zero mode with the opposite chirality localized at the center where the gauge field is singular. In the latter case, the low-energy effective theory is not chiral but vectorlike. We discuss how to circumvent this obstacle in formulating lattice chiral gauge theory in the single domain-wall fermion system.
