Abstract:Quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories are anticipated to directly probe the real time dynamics of QCD, but scale unfavorably with the required truncation of the gauge fields. Improved Hamiltonians are derived to correct for the effects of gauge field truncations on the SU(3) Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian. It is shown in $1+1D$ that this enables low chromo-electric field truncations to quantitatively reproduce features of the untruncated theory over a range of couplings and quark masses. In $3+1D$, an improved Hamiltonian is derived for lattice QCD with staggered massless fermions. It is shown in the strong coupling limit that the spectrum qualitatively reproduces aspects of two flavor QCD and simulations of a small system are performed on IBM's {\tt Perth} quantum processor.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems encountered in the quantum simulation of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) on the lattice, especially the error problems caused by the truncation of the gauge field. Specifically, the main objectives of the paper include:
1. **Improve the Hamiltonian**: By applying the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) method, derive an improved Hamiltonian that can correct the truncation effect of the gauge field. These improved Hamiltonians aim to reduce the errors caused by truncation, thereby more accurately simulating the real - time dynamics of QCD.
2. **1 + 1 - dimensional case study**: In the 1+1 - dimensional SU(3) gauge field - fermion coupling system, use tensor network simulation to verify the effectiveness of the improved Hamiltonian. The research shows that under different coupling strengths and quark masses, the low - color - electric - field truncation can quantitatively reproduce the characteristics of the untruncated theory.
3. **3 + 1 - dimensional QCD**: In 3+1 - dimensional QCD, derive an improved Hamiltonian suitable for staggered massless fermions. In the strong - coupling limit, this Hamiltonian can qualitatively reproduce the spectral characteristics of two - flavor QCD, and a small - system simulation has been carried out on IBM's Perth quantum processor.
