Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:Foreseeing the proliferation of underwater vehicles and sensors, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a key enabler for ocean exploration, with strong competitiveness in short-range bandwidth-intensive applications. We provide a tutorial on the basic concepts and essential features of UWOC, as well as an overview of work being conducted in this field. Research challenges, arising from the characteristics of underwater channels, and possible roadmaps are discussed in detail. This review is expected to be of great use for the link designers of this field.

Abstract:Aiming at the transceiver technology in wireless optical communication, this paper combs the relevant research progress from two aspects of free space optical communication and underwater optical communication, summarizes the development trend of wireless optical communication transceiver technology from communication bands, modulation modes, and photodetectors according to different scenarios, analyzes the application prospect of single photon detection in wireless optical communication. Then we report our team's results of applying superconducting series nanowire single-photon detectors to space optical communication, which is expected to provide reference and ideas for related research.

Abstract:Generally, only binary modulation formats, such as on–off keying (OOK) and pulse position modulation (PPM), can be detected by a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD). In this paper, we propose to use a single SPAD receiver to achieve underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) with high-order modulation formats. The feasibility is theoretically analyzed, and firstly demonstrated in a proof-of-concept orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) experiment. The proposed OFDM system using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) can work with less than 68 and 390 photons per symbol, and with receiver sensitivities below the forward error correction (FEC) limit as high as −84.5 dBm and −77.8 dBm, respectively. These extraordinarily sensitive results indicate that the proposed scheme is a promising solution to long-distance UWOC systems or internet of underwater things (IoUT).

Abstract:<p>Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is an emerging and feasible underwater communication technology and has developed rapidly in recent years. Building a high-performance and practical UWOC system requires comprehensive consideration and optimization design from the device to the system, as well as from the internal modulation to the external environment. This paper provides an overview of the recent developments in UWOC systems, covering aspects about the system transmitters and receivers, advanced modulation formats and underwater channels. Some key technologies to improve transmission capacity of UWOC are classified and summarized to provide guidance for system design. The main challenges and perspectives to achieve a reliable UWOC system are also mentioned. The summary and analysis of these advances and techniques will shed light on the future development of UWOC technology and assist in the construction of the internet of underwater things.</p>

Abstract:Underwater wireless communications refer to data transmission in unguided water environment through wireless carriers, i.e., radio-frequency (RF) wave, acoustic wave, and optical wave. In comparison to RF and acoustic counterparts, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can provide a much higher transmission bandwidth and much higher data rate. Therefore, we focus, in this paper, on the UOWC that employs optical wave as the transmission carrier. In recent years, many potential applications of UOWC systems have been proposed for environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster precaution, and military operations. However, UOWC systems also suffer from severe absorption and scattering introduced by underwater channels. In order to overcome these technical barriers, several new system design approaches, which are different from the conventional terrestrial free-space optical communication, have been explored in recent years. We provide a comprehensive and exhaustive survey of the state-of-the-art UOWC research in three aspects: 1) channel characterization; 2) modulation; and 3) coding techniques, together with the practical implementations of UOWC.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) technology has attracted widespread attention in the past few years. Compared with conventional acoustic underwater wireless communication technology, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology has promising potential to provide high data rate wireless connections due to the large license-free bandwidth. Building a high-performance and reliable UOWC system has become the target of researchers and various advanced and innovative technologies have been proposed and investigated. Among them, better hardware such as transmitters and receivers, as well as more advanced modulation and signal processing techniques, are key factors in improving UOWC system performance. In this paper, we review the recent development in UOWC systems. In particular, we provide a brief introduction to different types of UOWC systems based on channel configuration, and we focus on various recent studies on advanced signal processing methods in UOWC systems, including both traditional non-machine learning (NML) equalizers and machine learning (ML) schemes based on neural networks. In addition, we also discuss the key challenges in UOWC systems for future applications.

Abstract:Single-photon sources with high repetition rates have been a focal point of modern research for decades. However, their application in underwater environments is significantly limited due to the absorption properties of water, which hinder the propagation of most optical wavelengths. This study addresses the challenge by reporting on-demand single-photon extraction suitable for underwater quantum communication. The use of plasmonic nanoantennas can significantly enhance the spontaneous emission of single-photon sources. Nonetheless, a primary challenge is the nanoscale guiding of emitted photons in underwater environments. To overcome this, a more sophisticated design is required to enhance photon emission and achieve momentum matching with water. Here, we present a topology-optimized design of underwater plasmonic nanoantennas to mitigate these limitations. The nanoantenna consists of an optimized gold pattern and a silicon nitride substrate. Consequently, the normalized extraction decay rate (gamma(e)/gamma(0)) can reach 4.02 at a wavelength of 517 nm, which is within the blue-green spectral range, when using an objective lens with a numerical aperture of 0.6 (cross-section angle of 26.7(degrees)). The proposed design approach for plasmonic nanoantennas is versatile and holds promising potential for various applications, particularly in advancing single-photon technologies for quantum communication.

Abstract:A underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) as the receiver and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) was proposed and experimentally investigated. The MPPC with high sensitivity combined with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) OFDM with high spectral efficiency can potentially support a data rate of hundreds of Mbps under a relatively long underwater transmission distance. Although the photoelectric response of each individual pixel in the MPPC is nonlinear due to its intrinsic dead time, the MPPC consisting of thousands of pixels can be operated like a linear photodetector due to the statistical effect. A net data rate of 312.03 Mbps, with a bit error rate (BER) below the forward error correction (FEC) limit, was successfully achieved over a 21-m underwater channel exploiting 32-QAM OFDM modulation.

Abstract:Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) is not a new idea, but it has recently attracted renewed interest since seawater presents a reduced absorption window for blue-green light. Due to its higher bandwidth, underwater optical wireless communications can support higher data rates at low latency levels compared to acoustic and RF counterparts. The paper is aimed at those who want to undertake studies on UOWC. It offers an overview on the current technologies and those potentially available soon. Particular attention has been given to offering a recent bibliography, especially on the use of single-photon receivers.

Abstract:The transmission distance, alignment requirement and stability of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems are usually difficult to trade off. In this article, to ensure that the optical spot at the receiver end has sufficient optical power and uniform power distribution, the transmitter of a UWOC system is designed based on a single-color light-emitting diode (LED) array with a beam shaping system. The lens group-based beam shaping scheme not only extends the transmission distance, but still maintains the easy-alignment nature and stability of the LED-based UWOC link. At the receiver, a diversity reception scheme with an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and a high-gain scheme combining a PMT with an optical antenna, are adopted and compared. To alleviate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and compensate for the nonlinear distortion of the signal, hardware pre-equalization and nonlinear post-equalization based on Volterra are adopted at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. A UWOC transmission with a distance of 50 m and a data rate of 300 Mbps is realized, which is the highest rate-distance product realized by an ordinary monochromatic LED-based transmitter ever reported. The stability and practicability of the proposed UWOC system with relaxed alignment requirement are verified in laboratory and swimming pool, as well as in a real harsh sea environment.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) are considered an emerging high-speed wireless network for underwater applications and compete with underwater radio frequency (RF) communications and underwater acoustic communications (UAC). Even though the utilization of laser diodes (LDs) enhances the -3dB modulation bandwidth extraordinarily from a few tens of MHz to GHz, LDs have the features of high collimation and narrow spectrum. Without the point-to-point optical alignment, the performance of the LD-based UWOC system drops exponentially because the received optical power determines the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the UWOC system. To achieve a high-performance and reliable UWOC link based on LDs requires focusing optics and an alignment system. In this paper, we demonstrated a CMOS monolithic photodetector with a built-in 2-dimensional light direction sensor for the UWOC link by using a 450 nm LD and none-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation method. Employing this innovative technique, the field of view (FOV) was enlarged to 120°, and data rates up to 110 Mb/s at a bit error rate (BER) of 2.3×10−10 were obtained. The establishment of a proposed UWOC physical link showed enhanced communication performance for more practical and robust wireless communication applications.
A High-Speed Photon-Counting UWOC System with Multiple Channels to Suppress the Randomness in Detection

Abstract:The employment of photon-counting receivers is an important solution for extending the distance of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) links, but it also brings new challenges. Apart from the well-studied Poisson randomness, we first investigate the impact of the usually ignored randomness in electron multiplication on the bit error rate of photon-counting UWOC systems, and propose multi-channel detection with a modified log-likelihood ratio to suppress the randomness. Benefitting from this method, the slot time can be even shorter than the width of the counting pulses of the detectors, which effectively improves the data rate. The experimental system achieves a 10.13-Mbps underwater transmission with a sensitivity of -85 dBm with a low-density parity check code, requiring 0.358 photons per bit on average. The link remains stable against the turbulence with a maximum scintillation index of 0.0329. The maximum link loss is 94.09 dB, equivalent to 459 m in Jerlov IA water (c = 0.0284 m -1 ). The method proposed in this work can attain a high energy efficiency with low sacrifice in data rate and is meaningful for the design of high-order pulse position-modulated long-range UWOC systems.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASN) have been attracting growing research interests in recent decades. However, underwater acoustic (UWA) communications suffer from the long propagation delay, the limited bandwidth, multipath, and the Doppler effect. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) are attractive to UWA communications because of their robustness against frequency selective distortion. Nevertheless, OFDM and OFDMA have several drawbacks: high sensitivity to the frequency offset, large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and subcarrier nulls. Single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) which is a DFT-precoded version of OFDMA has stimulated wide interests in cellular wireless communication systems because of the inherent merits. However, SC-FDMA over UWA channels has not been investigated in the existing literature. In this paper, we apply SC-FDMA to UWA channels and mainly focus on the receiver design of the localized FDMA (LFDMA) scheme. Furthermore, our proposed receiver algorithm is tested using the experimental data recorded from the ACOMM10 experiment. The experimental results show that with multiple hydrophones combined, an average uncoded bit error rate (BER) of 10^{-3} can be achieved.
