Abstract:In recent years, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted a lot of attention from researchers due to their outstanding mechanical properties, but there are few reports about their functional performance. The development of new functional applications of HEAs is a challenging, but very meaningful topic. The decoloration of azo dye Direct Blue 6 (DB6) using equiatomic AlCrFeMn HEA synthesized by ball-milling is reported in this study. Ball-milled (BM) AlCrFeMn HEA shows excellent performance in the decoloration of DB6, 3 times faster than BM MgZn-based glassy powders and AlCoCrTiZn HEA, which are reported as the best among the metallic glasses and HEAs so far, respectively. The effects of initial pH, initial temperature and dye concentrations on the decoloration efficiency during reaction are systematically studied. This work can greatly expand the applications of HEAs, especially the application of their functional properties.
Rapid degradation of Direct Blue dye by Co-based amorphous alloy wire

Abstract:Amorphous alloys exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the degradation of azo dye wastewater due to their unique atomic structure. Unfortunately, amorphous alloys with both high degradation efficiency and considerable reusability are still unsatisfactory for a long time. In this work, a new Co-Mo-B amorphous alloy wire reported can degrade the Direct Blue 6 (DB 6) solution within 2 min with a degradation efficiency of 99%. Importantly, the novel Co-based amorphous alloy also exhibits excellent reusability with 97% degradation efficiency after 20 cycles. The superior degradation performance and good long-term reactivity are mainly due to the synergistic coordination of Co and Mo bimetals and the self-exfoliation effect of the corrosion products. Such findings can provide a new idea for the development of amorphous alloys in the degradation of azo dye wastewater.

Excellent dye degradation performance of FeSiBP amorphous alloys by Fenton-like process

Abstract:Amorphous alloys are being newly applied in wastewater treatment because of their unique atomic packing structure. They possess excellent degradation efficiency, stability and reusability. In this work, Fe80Si10B10 and Fe83Si5B8P4 amorphous ribbons exhibited advanced catalytic performance for the degradation of Methyl Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes, and the color removal reach nearly 100% within 11 min for both the dyes. Compared with the Fe80Si10B10 amorphous ribbon, the Fe83Si5B8P4 ribbon showed higher degradation efficiency due to its lower reaction activation energy, higher electron transfer ability and higher Fe content, and the formation of the galvanic cell between the strong Fe-P bonds and the weak Fe-B bonds. It also exhibited high stability and reusability. The degradation efficiency was improved when the appropriate concentration of H2O2 is added. As regards the pH, high degradation efficiency was observed in acidic MB solution, but it decreased as the pH increased up to pH 7. The application of the electro-Fenton-like process is discussed, which can effectively improve the degradation performance in a nearly natural solution. This study presents a high efficiency low-cost catalyst for synthetic dye degradation and expands the functional applications of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:In this study, the amorphous-nanocrystalline dual-phase structure Fe 78 Si 13 B 9 alloy ribbons (FeSiB) were prepared by single roll stripping method. The degradation efficiency of FeSiB for direct yellow dyes (DYGR) was 83% at a water bath temperature of 35 °C, pH = 7, and without any oxidizer addition. The characterization results show that the galvanic cell structure is formed between the nanocrystals and amorphous matrix, which makes it easier for Fe 0 to lose electrons and accelerate electron transfer, thus promoting the degradation reaction. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was employed to identify the intermediates. The specific degradation pathway of DYGR by FeSiB ribbons is proposed for the first time based on these 18 intermediates. The mechanism studies show that [H] produced by FeSiB plays a special role in the degradation pathway of DYGR, and is more likely to react with electron-withdrawing group. This work provides a new idea for understanding the degradation mechanism of azo dyes by Fe-based alloys.

Abstract:The effects of nonmetallic elements Sulfur (S), Phosphorus (P) and Carbon (C) on the decolorisation of azo dye direct blue 6 (DB6) by using ball-milled (BM) Co-free AlCrFeMn (S 0 ) high-entropy alloy (HEA) are presented for the first time in this work. We report the approach of adding S, P and C into S 0 HEA in a single step by ball milling, and it is environment friendly method. Moreover, HEAs added with S, P and C do not cause secondary pollution of water during decolorisation recation. DB6 dye solution (200 mg/L) can be fully decolorised in 0.3, 1.9 and 3.3 min with 0.5 g/L of BM AlCrFeMnS (S S ), AlCrFeMnP (S P ), and AlCrFeMnC (S C ), which are about 42, 6.6 and 3.8 times faster than that of S 0 , respectively. The efficiency of S S for DB6 is 126000 times that of commercially available pure iron powders. The activation energy of S S is 36.3 kJ/mol, which is lower than that of S 0 (54.6 kJ/mol). The extremely high decolorisation efficiency is closely related with the formation of a large number of galvanic cells in S S , S P and S C between the metal and nonmetal elements, which greatly increases the amount and efficiency of electron transfer. The decolorisation efficiency of DB6 solution is assessed by ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrophotometry. The decolorisation rate follows pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics with respect to dye concentration. The results of this study provide some enlightenment for researchers in the application of HEAs in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The degradation ability of the Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 amorphous alloy in the acid orange 7 (AO7) solution was compared to that of Fe 80 B 13 C 7 . The results show that the Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 amorphous ribbon exhibits a higher degradation efficiency and lower reaction activation energy than Fe 80 B 13 C 7 . This is due to the fact that Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 is prone to form 3D nanochannel and porous nanosheet network structures, which improves adsorption capacity and increases the number of active reaction sites. On the other hand, the weakly bonded Fe–B and Fe–P can form more complex galvanic cells with strongly bonded Fe–C to accelerate dye degradation. The analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry reveals that the generation of the reactive species [H] plays a key role in the degradation of AO7. In addition, the degradation pathway and environmental applicability were studied. The results confirm that the low-cost Fe 85 P 11 C 2 B 2 alloy is a potential material for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Degradation of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater has become one of the biggest problems that are threatening the environment, and correspondingly it is a priority for scientists to find a solution. In this work, we study the effect of the iron content in Fe-based amorphous ribbon catalysts (Fe 78+x Si 9 B 13-x , x = 0, 1 and 2) in degradation of Direct Blue 6 (DB 6) azo dye by Fenton-like process. We evaluated the catalytic efficiency by changing experimental conditions with the aim to optimize the degradation performance. The amorphous Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 ribbon showed the highest catalytic activity with its ability to degrade DB 6 by 94.65% within 15 min Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 ribbon provides more reactive sites than what generates the most hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and thus increases the degradation reaction. Degradation efficiency can be improved by increasing the reaction temperature and ribbons dosage, a correct amount of H 2 O 2 but decreases with increasing initial pH value and concentration of DB 6. Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 amorphous ribbons can be reused up to 12 times in optimal conditions, which confirms a good reusability. The excellent performance in catalytic activity and reusability of Fe-based amorphous alloy catalysts will contribute to wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Fe-based amorphous alloys have been found to be very efficient in the degradation of water pollutants due to their unique atomic arrangements with long-range disordered structure. In this work, Fe-B-C-Ti amorphous ribbons were successfully synthesized and showed high catalytic efficiency in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under simulated sunlight and across a wide pH range. The catalytic efficiency was evaluated under different conditions to optimize the degradation performance. The amorphous ribbon Fe75B10C10Ti5 was found to exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity as explained by its optical and photoelectrochemical properties. It can degrade MB completely with low Fe-leaching and significant recyclability at pH close to a neutral range (pH 5). The degradation mechanisms can be explained in terms of photocatalytic activity along with the galvanic cell effect which contributed to the efficient MB degradation. This work provides a comprehensive idea for the synthesis of amorphous alloys by optimizing their elemental composition and also explains the catalytic activity of partially crystallized regions on the ribbon surface. The significant corrosion resistance and the quick degradation of MB in a wide pH range in a recyclable manner by these easily separable and highly efficient catalysts indicate great potential for their practical application.

Abstract:The microstructure of boron doped diamond (BDD) is the main factor affecting its degradation performance, and the type of wastewater is also a major factor. In this paper, niobium based BDD electrodes were prepared by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technology at 650 °C, 750 °C, 850 °C substrate temperatures. For the three BDD electrodes with different substrate temperatures, the comparison of electrochemical performance and degradation efficiency was conducted. The results showed that with the increase of deposition temperature, the microstructure of BDD electrodes surface changed, the grain size and boron content increased, and the sp3/sp2 phase ratio also increased, which caused the electrochemical oxidation performance of the BDD electrodes improved, the color removal rate of the electrodes increased, and the energy consumption reduced. The decolorization rates of the 850 °C-BDD electrode for Reactive orange X-GN and Reactive blue 19 at 180 min were 99.79 % and 93.38 %, respectively. In addition, the degradation performance of 8 dyes by 850 °C-BDD electrode was systematically studied. Affected by the molecular structure of dye, the degradation degree of each type of dye from easy to difficult was: Fuchsin acid, Reactive red 2, Acid orange G, Alizarin red, Acid blue 92, Reactive orange X-GN, Orange II, Reactive blue 19.

Degradation of azo dye active brilliant red X-3B by composite ferrate solution

Abstract:Composite ferrate(VI) solution (CFS) with improved stability was successfully prepared in this study. The stability of Fe(VI) increased from hours for potassium ferrate at pH 9-10 to 16d for 1 mmol L(-1) Fe(VI) in CFS at 25 degrees C, decomposing 24%. The Fe(VI) was more stable at low concentration (1 mmol L(-1)) than that at high concentration (10 mmol L(-1)). The degradation of the azo dye reactive brilliant red X-3B (X-3B) by CFS was investigated. The results showed that pH, initial dye concentration and CFS dosage affected the degradation efficiency. For 0.08 mmol L(-1) X-3B simulate wastewater, the optimal pH and CFS dosage were 8.4 and 25 mg L(-1) (as K(2)FeO(4)), and about 99% X-3B was decolorized after 20 min under this conditions. The color decay was considerably faster than the decrease in COD and TOC, which was attributed to the ease of chromophore destruction. Compared with the decolorization, the removal percentage of COD and TOC were 42% and 9% after 60 min, respectively. The Fe(VI) and ClO(-) were contained in CFS, which have synergetic effect for the degradation of X-3B. Additionally, phthalic acid and muconic acid were identified as intermediates by GC/MS, which was in accordance with the lowered pH with the reaction time. The complete mineralization of X-3B cannot be achieved under the oxidation by CFS. And a tentative pathway for the oxidative degradation of X-3B was postulated.

Abstract:A series of Fe-P-B ultrafine amorphous alloy particles has been prepared by the chemical reduction method. The composition and size of the particles have been effectively adjusted. Mössbauer spectroscopy in addition to some other techniques has been used to investigate the reaction process, the factors that influence the preparation, the crystallization of the particles, and the interactions between the components within them. The results indicate that the co-deposition of iron, phosphorus and boron atoms in the solution at room temperature forms Fe-P-B amorphous alloy particles, and a preferential bonding of Fe-P bond to Fe-B one exists in the particles.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum-based alloys are the most popular structural materials. Strength and refractoriness can be improved by doping with transition metals; this effect can be amplified by fast quenching from liquid state, which will expand the solid-solution regions and disperse the intermediate phases in transition metal-aluminum alloys. The decomposition of supersaturated solid solutions (SSS) under special conditions releases the fine-dispersed hardening intermetallic phases, which boosts the strength of the alloy. The way fast-quenched Al-Co-Zr and Al-Fe-Co-Zr alloys change their microhardness after isothermic annealing at 470, 570, or 670 K indicates dispersion hardening. Durometer testing points to a considerable hardening of fast-quenched Al-Co-Zr and Al-Fe-Co-Zr alloys, which is caused by the decomposition of supersaturated solid solutions. Staging the decomposition of Co, Zr, or Fe SSS in aluminum helps predict how the doping additives as well as the temperature and timing of subsequent thermal treatment affect the strength of aluminum alloys.

Abstract:The preparation of polymer-metal complex is an effective way to achieve the bifunctionality of polymer and metal. In this study, temperature-sensitive polymer was synthesized from triethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (MEO 2 MA) and methacrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (NMS) monomers via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. 6-Aminohexanoic acid was introduced into the temperature-sensitive polymer using an activated ester strategy to obtain branched carboxyl-containing polymers. The carboxyl group in the polymer was coordinated with Fe(III), resulting in temperature-sensitive polymer-based iron complexes. The obtained iron complexes were used as homogeneous catalysts in the Fenton oxidation. Where, 97% and 96% decolorization of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) could be achieved within 2 h for P(COOH 10 - co -MEO 2 MA 41 )-Fe 3+ , and the catalytic activities increased with the increase of the COOH content of polymer. In addition, the recycling of the catalyst can be achieved by the heating-centrifugal precipitation method using the temperature-sensitive nature of the polymer.

Abstract:The homogeneous Fe(VI)/Na2SO3 system has been proposed for highly efficient degradation of recalcitrant contaminants, in which sulfite could significantly enhance the transformation of organic substrate by Fe(VI). Also, the Fe(VI)/NaHSO3 system could show high efficiency across a wide range of pH conditions. The degradation rates reached up to 80% within 2 min and 70% within 5 min in strongly acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. Unexpectedly, a faster removal rate was obtained in Fe(VI)/NaHSO3 system than that in Fe(VI)/Na2SO3 system for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). A reasonable dye degradation mechanism was proposed and verified by a series of experiments. The high oxidation potential of Fe(VI) and other species such as sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were responsible for the outstanding capabilities of Fe(VI)/NaHSO3 system, which could significantly improve the treatment of organics in wastewater under a very wide range of pH conditions.

Abstract:Fe@Fe2O3 core shell nanomaterials with different Fe2O3 shell thickness were synthesized and the Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 Fenton-like system was used for the decomposition of Orange II. The consequences are compared with traditional Fenton Fe@Fe2O3/H2O2 system. The Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 system showed extremely good applicability under both strongly acidic and alkaline conditions. The new Fe@Fe2O3-(2)/NaHSO3 system led to more than 99% degradation in 30 s when the pH was 3, which indicated that the Fe@Fe2O3 material was not corroded during the process even under strongly acidic condition. The above Fe@Fe2O3-(2) material was prepared from nano-zero-valent iron aged in solution for 2 h to synthesize the Fe2O3 shell. The reaction mechanism of Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 Fenton-like system was also concluded. The oxidation efficiency was highly improved due to rapid electron transfer between Fe core and Fe2O3 shell, which promoted the direct recycling of ≡Fe3+ and ≡Fe2+ and thus accelerated the generation of SO4- and OH radicals.
Multi-phase nanocrystallization induced fast degradation of methyl orange by annealing Fe-based amorphous ribbons

Abstract:Different from the common understanding that crystallization deteriorates the degradation capability of amorphous alloys, we show here that the Fe-based multi-phase nanocrystalline ribbons (Fe-MNRs) exhibit 3 and 17 times higher degradation rate than its amorphous counterpart and the conventional zero valent iron powders, respectively. The formation of multi-phase nanocrystals and nanoporous structure resulted from selective corrosion during degradation is responsible for the high degradation capability of Fe-MNRs. The present results suggest that suitable nano-crystallization annealing treatment could be a novel approach to enhance the degradation capability of Fe-based amorphous alloys.
Superior Azo-Dye Degradation of Fe-Si-B-P Amorphous Powders with Graphene Oxide Addition

Abstract:Degradation behavior of methyl orange and direct blue 6 azo dyes catalyzed by Fe76Si9B10P5 amorphous powders and graphene oxide (GO) addition composites has been investigated. The results revealed that the Fe76Si9B10P5 amorphous powders are more effective to degrade azo dyes than the commercial Fe powders with the activity energies of 24.2 kJ mol(-1) and 20.4 kJ mol(-1) for the degradation of methyl orange and direct blue 6 azo dye solutions. The addition of GO into the amorphous powders further improves the degradation activity, accompanied with lower activation energies of 18.3 kJ mol(-1) and 16.7 kJ mol(-1). High degradation performance of Fe-Si-B-P amorphous powders was attributed to the amorphous structure in metastable state and the existence of metalloids which are beneficial to the formation of a surface layer with high activity. The addition of GO accelerates the degradation process due to its high surface area and the existence of large number of functional groups.

Abstract:Pure cubic beta-Fe2O3 crystal, which can absorb visible light (< 650 nm) on account of the bandgap of 1.9 eV as a direct bandgap semiconductor, was employed as a low-cost and non-toxic catalyst for photo-Fenton reaction in this article. Diverse organic contaminants including rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), alizarin red (AR) and phenol can be effectively degraded. In particular, the degradation of RhB were investigated detailedly. As such, hydroxyl radicals (.OH) were verified to act as considerable active species for the process by using terephthalic acid as an indicator. Degradation mechanism and intermediates of phenol in the photo-Fenton reaction was discovered by virtue of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC MS). Notably, hydroxylation of phenol generated some intermediates, which are converted into H2O and CO2 eventually.

Abstract:A novel particle electrode based on antimony tailings microspheres was successfully constructed by ultrasonic immersion calcination method, and the degradation of RhB was studied in a three-dimensional electrochemical reactor (3DER). It was characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS, cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. When the pH value is 5.00, the dosage of Fe/Cu@antimony tailing is 1.50 g/L, the initial concentration is 100 mg/L, and the current density is 20 mA/cm 2 , the degradation efficiency is the best (99.40% for RhB and 98.81% for TOC) within 15 min. The results show that in the three-dimensional electrochemical oxidation system, electrochemical oxidation and electro Fenton oxidation occur at the same time to cause the increase of hydroxyl radicals. According to LC-MS analysis and EPR characterization, it can be found that the main degradation mechanism of RhB is that hydroxyl radicals continuously attack RhB, and realize rapid degradation of RhB through deethylation, deamination, dealkylation, decarboxylation, chromophore splitting, ring opening and mineralization. Fe/Cu@antimony tailing particles are both electrodes for electrochemical oxidation and catalysts for Fenton oxidation. The degradation effect of RhB remained at 94% after 6 cycles, and the leaching rates of Fe and Cu are only 1.20% and 0.79%, indicating that Fe/Cu@AT had significant stability. This work provides a new insight into the establishment of an efficient and stable three-dimensional electrocatalytic particle electrode.
