Abstract:The reducing degradation kinetics of five ate dyes, Acid orange II, Acid orange IV, Acid orange GG, Acid red 3B and Orange I, by zero-valent iron powder in aqueous solution were studied. It showed that the degradation is a two-step reaction, with the first step being reversible. Solution acidity and iron surface area are the factors greatly influencing the degradation rates, and with increasing of acidity and iron surface area, the degradation rates increase. Cheap, fast and durable degradation of azo dye wastewater by zero-valent iron structural composites

Abstract:Insufficient chemical activity of zero-valent iron (ZVI) is the main problem that limits its performance in degrading dyeing wastewater. Currently, the methods of creating acidic reaction condition and reducing the particle size of ZVI are widely used to improve the degradation activity of ZVI. However, they have disadvantages such as high reactor requirements and oxides accumulation. Herein, peculiar porous structural composites constructed with porous ferroalloy supported iron powders were prepared depending on magnetic force, the effects of pH, material structure, and powder size on the degradation performance of iron in Orange II solutions were detailedly investigated. The porous structure endowed the composite materials with greatly enhanced degradation performance, especially in near-neutral and alkaline environments, enable a cheap, fast, and durable degradation. The results show that the compositing porous ferroalloy with iron powder can largely increase the kinetic rate constant by more than 15 times, which is much more advantageous than increasing the specific surface area of the powder or increasing the acidity. This work reveals the determinants that affect the degradation performance of ZVI, and presents an effective method for tuning the properties of magnetic materials using porous structural composites.

Abstract:Degradation of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater has become one of the biggest problems that are threatening the environment, and correspondingly it is a priority for scientists to find a solution. In this work, we study the effect of the iron content in Fe-based amorphous ribbon catalysts (Fe 78+x Si 9 B 13-x , x = 0, 1 and 2) in degradation of Direct Blue 6 (DB 6) azo dye by Fenton-like process. We evaluated the catalytic efficiency by changing experimental conditions with the aim to optimize the degradation performance. The amorphous Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 ribbon showed the highest catalytic activity with its ability to degrade DB 6 by 94.65% within 15 min Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 ribbon provides more reactive sites than what generates the most hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and thus increases the degradation reaction. Degradation efficiency can be improved by increasing the reaction temperature and ribbons dosage, a correct amount of H 2 O 2 but decreases with increasing initial pH value and concentration of DB 6. Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 amorphous ribbons can be reused up to 12 times in optimal conditions, which confirms a good reusability. The excellent performance in catalytic activity and reusability of Fe-based amorphous alloy catalysts will contribute to wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The application of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) is an area of growing interest, especially in the remediation processes of waters of different origin. The standard synthetic procedure for nZVI involves the chemical reduction of Fe 2+ or Fe 3+ with the solution of a strong reducing agent. This type of synthetic route leads to the formation of new toxic species. The green synthesis of nZVI using plant extracts is, therefore, an excellent alternative to the above-mentioned conventional methods. Within the scope of this work, the amorphous nZVI was synthesized by green tea mediated single-step method from Fe 3+ as precursors, denoting an eco-friendly approach. Additionally, the physico–chemical characterization (TEM, SEM/EDS, size of particles/aggregates, XRD, BET) of nZVI was performed. The catalytic activity of the obtained nZVI was tested in a Fenton-like reaction of the removal/degradation of three representative industrial textile dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange and bromothymol blue) from water. In order to optimize the process parameters, the effect of homogenization treatment, nZVI and H 2 O 2 concentration on catalytic performance were also done followed by degradation kinetic study using four different models. The results of this work have shown the exceptionally high efficiency of the green nZVI which is reflected in almost complete degradation of all tested dyes within very short period of time, despite their amorphous nature, aggregates arrangement and very low specific surface area. Furthermore, the examined degradation kinetics has excellently followed the BMG model, indicating that the degradation process of the investigated dyes proceeds via two stages (two-stage pattern)—a fast one and a much slower one, regardless of the used reaction conditions. Based on all gained results, particular degradation mechanisms were proposed.

Abstract:During the traditional homogeneous Fenton reaction process for water treatment, the consumption rate constant of Fe2+ is much greater than its regeneration rate constant, which makes Fe2+ an almost stoichiometric loss and produces iron sludge waste. In this article, highly dispersed zero-valent Fe nanoparticles loaded on porous carbon materials (Fe-EMC) were synthesized by a one-step calcination method using Flammulina velutipes natural carbon source and Fe(NO3)3 as raw materials to solve the aforementioned problem. The as-prepared Fe-EMC materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption measurements. It exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dyes under a broad pH region. Under conditions of 0.3 g/L Fe-EMC, 0.2 M/L H2O2, pH 7.0–11.0, and 50 mg/L MB, 97.98% of the MB dyes in the solution were completely degraded within 1 h. It was attributed to the efficient regeneration cycle between Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the Fenton-like system with light irradiation, which can promote the generation of active oxygen species.
Intrinsic Fast Kinetics on the Degradation of Azo Dye by Iron in Alkaline Condition

Abstract:It is well-known that the performance of reducing azo dyes using iron is significantly weakened with increasing pH, leading to the weak degradation performance in alkaline condition. Herein, an unexpected promoting effect of high alkalinity on the degradation of azo dye has been found, and the crucial impact of oxygen and the underlying mechanism of high alkalinity advantage have been revealed. The degradation performance can be largely restrained when oxygen participates in the reaction, as the adsorption of oxygen on iron hinders the electron transfer between iron and azo dye and covers up the real effect of hydroxyl ions on the reaction, leading to the conventional misunderstanding. The effect of oxygen on the reaction thermodynamics is minutely investigated by electrochemical tests, and degradation experiments indicate that large improvement in kinetic rate constant can be achieved in alkaline condition by eliminating the dissolved oxygen. It is experimentally found that, at pH 10.0, up to 89.9% improvement in kinetic degradation rate can be achieved by removing dissolved oxygen in the degradation of Orange II (25 mg L − 1) using iron. Moreover, less than 10 min is needed to decompose half of the dye in the solution (12.5 mg L − 1) of pH 10.0.

Abstract:A heterogeneous advanced Fenton process (AFP) based on the use of zero valent iron (ZVI) has been investigated for the treatment of a real industrial wastewater, generated from a drug manufacturing plant. The effluent consists of a complex mixture of organic substances which are refractory to conventional treatments. The concentration of ZVI and oxidant (H2O2) were studied. The use of moderate concentrations of oxidant and ZVI commercial catalyst led to total organic carbon (TOC) reductions of 70% and 55% of diluted (TOC0 0.1gL−1) and as-received pharmaceutical wastewater (TOC0 5gL−1), respectively, with a remarkable enhancement of the biodegradability in all cases. Apart from that, it was demonstrated a notable effect of the magnetic agitation system (speed and size of the stir bar) on the catalytic performance of the ZVI/H2O2 system. The aggregation of ZVI particles on the magnetic stir bar surface, due to its intrinsic magnetic properties makes that the availability of active ZVI particles was somewhat controlled by the size of the magnetic stir bar. For the best operation conditions, a higher TOC conversion was accomplished during the first minutes of reaction, slowing down afterwards, probably due to passivation of the ZVI catalyst. The different stratified layers of iron/hydrous oxides covering the metallic ZVI surface formed under the different reaction conditions were studied by XRD, TPR and XPS characterization techniques.

[Effects of particle size of zero-valent iron on the reactivity of activating persulfate and kinetics for the degradation of acid orange 7]

Abstract:This research described the heterogeneous reactions of persulfate with different particle sizes of zero-valent iron (including 1 mm-ZVI,150 μm-ZVI,50 nm-ZVI) for degradation of acid orange 7(AO7) , and studied the kinetics and intermediate products of AO7 under these systems. The results demonstrated that these three types of ZVI were efficient in promoting the degradation of AO7, the degradation efficiencies of AO7 were 43% , 97% , and 100% within 90 min respectively, in the 1 mm-ZVI,150 μm-ZVI and 50 nm- ZVI systems, respectively. With the results of kinetic fitting models, the pseudo first-order kinetics exhibited better fitting results in the 1 mm-ZVI,150 μm-ZVI systems, while the second-order kinetics exhibited better fitting results in the 50 nm-ZVI system. And the different ZVI types exhibited difference on the AO7 degradation rate constant, which ranged as 50 nm-ZVI > 150 μm-ZVI > 1 mm-ZVI. The iron corrosion products coating on the ZVI after reaction were composed of α-Fe2 O3 and some Fe3O4 in the 1 mm-ZVI system while that consisted of Fe3O4 and α-Fe2O3, FeOOH respectively, in thel50 μm-ZVI and 50 nm-ZVI systems,. Which were identified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy. Some intermediate products, including 2-naphthalenol, 2-methylphenol, 4-ethyl- 3-methyl-phenol, isoindole- 1,3-dione and phthalic acid et al. were identified by GC/MS measurement. Both UV-vis absorbance spectra and GC/MS determination indicated that there was difference in degradation paths of AO7 between the three systems.

Abstract:Despite the importance of surface iron (hydr)oxides (Fe-(hydr)oxides) for the decontamination performance of zerovalent iron (ZVI) -based technologies has been well recognized, controversial understandings of their exact roles still exist due to the complex species distribution of Fe-(hydr)oxides. Herein, we re-structured the surface of ZVI using eight distinct Fe-(hydr)oxides and analyzed their species-specific effects on the performance of ZVI for Se(IV) under well-controlled conditions. The kinetics-relevant performance indicators (Se(IV) removal rates, Fe2+ release rates, and the utilization ratio of ZVI) under the effect of each Fe-(hydr)oxide roughly followed the order: δ-FeOOH > Fe5HO8·4H2O > α-FeOOH > β-FeOOH > γ-FeOOH > γ-Fe2O3 > Fe3O4 > α-Fe2O3. Multiple linear regression analysis shows that the large pore volume and size (instead of specific surface area), low open-circuit potential, and low electrochemical impedance are key positive properties for kinetics-relevant performance. Besides, for electron efficiency of ZVI, only Fe3O4 increased the value to 50.0%, due to the contribution of its ferrous components, while others did not change it (∼20%). Additional experiments with commercial ZVI covered by individual Fe-(hydr)oxides confirmed the observed species-specific trends. All these results not only provide new basis for mechanism explanation but also have practical implications for the production or modification of ZVI.
Excellent dye degradation performance of FeSiBP amorphous alloys by Fenton-like process

Abstract:Amorphous alloys are being newly applied in wastewater treatment because of their unique atomic packing structure. They possess excellent degradation efficiency, stability and reusability. In this work, Fe80Si10B10 and Fe83Si5B8P4 amorphous ribbons exhibited advanced catalytic performance for the degradation of Methyl Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes, and the color removal reach nearly 100% within 11 min for both the dyes. Compared with the Fe80Si10B10 amorphous ribbon, the Fe83Si5B8P4 ribbon showed higher degradation efficiency due to its lower reaction activation energy, higher electron transfer ability and higher Fe content, and the formation of the galvanic cell between the strong Fe-P bonds and the weak Fe-B bonds. It also exhibited high stability and reusability. The degradation efficiency was improved when the appropriate concentration of H2O2 is added. As regards the pH, high degradation efficiency was observed in acidic MB solution, but it decreased as the pH increased up to pH 7. The application of the electro-Fenton-like process is discussed, which can effectively improve the degradation performance in a nearly natural solution. This study presents a high efficiency low-cost catalyst for synthetic dye degradation and expands the functional applications of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Abstract:The application of zero-valent iron (ZVI) coupled with microorganisms, has gained considerable attention in recent years for eliminating recalcitrant organic matters from wastewater. Nevertheless, there are no general conclusions regarding the degradation mechanism and the operating variables. In this paper, sponge iron (SFe, a kind of ZVI) has been submerged to the activated sludge process to develop a biological sponge iron system (SFe-M). The treatment impact of SFe-M system on aniline (AN) wastewater under the optimal conditions was significantly better than that of the general activated sludge system. In the SFe-M system, the variation trends of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) production were consistent with those of Fe(II), and the hydrogen peroxide concentration was approximately twice as high as the sum of activated sludge system and the SFe system. Both SFe and microorganisms could induce Fenton-like reactions directly or indirectly. This contributed to the production of •OH that constantly attacked the benzene ring and the amino group. It resulted in some nitrogen in AN released in the form of ammonia ions. Moreover, microorganisms could also use the mass and electrons during the AN conversion process. The AN was eventually oxidized to carbon dioxide.

Abstract:Zero-valent iron (ZVI) suffers from the limitations of unsustainable reactivity in remediation applications, resulting in the insufficient removal of contaminants. In this study, iron phosphides (FeP X ) modified ZVI (P-ZVI) was successfully synthesized using a simple ball-milling method. The degradation of various contaminants including Cr(VI), nitrate, p-chlorophenol, tetrabromobisphenol A and diatrizoate by P-ZVI was enhanced under anaerobic conditions, with the kinetic constants 1.14- to 5.23-fold higher than that of ZVI. P-ZVI exhibited superiorities for pollutant degradation over a wide pH range, after different aging time and during consecutive cycle experiments. Mechanistic explorations revealed that the incorporation of P into ZVI not only improved the electron transfer capability of ZVI but also promoted the accumulation of atomic hydrogen (H*), thus endowing P-ZVI with favorable reductive reactivity. Based on experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, FeP X species on the surface of P-ZVI played a crucial role in H* stabilization by forming P-H* bonds and lowering H* adsorption energy. This study paves the way for future design and optimization of nZVI-based technology for the water decontamination.

Abstract:Contrasting effects of sulfidation on contaminants reduction by zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been reported in literature but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, under well-controlled conditions, we compared the performance of ZVI and sulfidated ZVI (S-ZVI) toward a series of chlorinated compounds. Results revealed that, although S-ZVI was more reactive than ZVI toward hexachloroethane, pentachloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and trichloroethene, sulfidation hindered the dechlorination of the other ten tested chlorinated aliphatics by a factor of 1.5–125. Moreover, S-ZVI may lead to an accumulation of toxic partially-dechlorinated products. Analogous to its effects on ZVI reactivity, sulfidation also exerted positive, negligible, or negative effects on the electron efficiency of ZVI. Solvent kinetic isotope effect analysis suggested that direct electron transfer rather than reaction with atomic hydrogen was the dominant reduction mechanism in S-ZVI system. Hence, the sulfidation enhancing effects could be expected only when direct electron transfer is the preferred reduction route for target contaminants. Furthermore, linear free energy relationships analysis indicated one-electron reduction potential could be used to predict the transformation of chlorinated ethanes by S-ZVI, whereas for chlorinated ethenes, their adsorption properties on S-ZVI determined the dechlorination process. All these findings may offer guidance for the decision-making regarding the application of S-ZVI.

Abstract:In this study, the amorphous-nanocrystalline dual-phase structure Fe 78 Si 13 B 9 alloy ribbons (FeSiB) were prepared by single roll stripping method. The degradation efficiency of FeSiB for direct yellow dyes (DYGR) was 83% at a water bath temperature of 35 °C, pH = 7, and without any oxidizer addition. The characterization results show that the galvanic cell structure is formed between the nanocrystals and amorphous matrix, which makes it easier for Fe 0 to lose electrons and accelerate electron transfer, thus promoting the degradation reaction. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was employed to identify the intermediates. The specific degradation pathway of DYGR by FeSiB ribbons is proposed for the first time based on these 18 intermediates. The mechanism studies show that [H] produced by FeSiB plays a special role in the degradation pathway of DYGR, and is more likely to react with electron-withdrawing group. This work provides a new idea for understanding the degradation mechanism of azo dyes by Fe-based alloys.

Partial aging can counter-intuitively couple with sulfidation to improve the reactive durability of zerovalent iron

Abstract:Sulfated zero-valent iron (SZVI) has shown promising applications in wastewater treatment. However, the rapid decline in the reactivity of SZVI with time limits its real practice. To mediate this problem, partial aging was proposed to improve the reactive durability of SZVI. Taking Cr(VI) as the target contaminant, we found that the aged ZVI (AZVI) gradually lost reactivity as aging time increased from 0.5 to 2 d. Counter-intuitively, the partially aged SZVI (ASZVI) showed greater reactivity than SZVI when exposed to oxygenated water for a period ranging from 0.5 to 14 d. In addition, the ASZVI with 0.5 d of aging time (ASZVI-0.5) not only maintained reactivity in successive runs but also increased the Cr(VI) removal capacity from 9.1 mg/g by SZVI to 19.1 mg/g by ASZVI-0.5. Correlation analysis further revealed that the electron transfer from the Fe 0 core to the shell was mediated by the conductive FeS and FeS 2 in the subshell of ASZVI. Meanwhile, the lepidocrocite and magnetite on the surface of ASZVI facilitated Cr(VI) adsorption and subsequent electron transfer for Cr(VI) reduction. Moreover, the iron (hydr)oxide shell could retain the conductive FeS and FeS 2 in the subshell, allowing ASZVI to reduce Cr(VI) efficiently and sustainably. In general, partial aging can enhance the reactive durability of ZVI when coupled with sulfidation and this synergistic effect will be beneficial to the application of SZVI-based technology for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Zero-Valent Iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have been extensively applied for the reduction of various recalcitrant organic contaminants, but their reactivity usually declines over time due to the formation of passive iron oxides. In this study we observed a sustained reactivity of nZVI for the dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) in water during several consecutive reaction cycles. The dechlorination rate constants increased substantially in Cycle 2, then remained at a high level over several consecutive cycles, and ultimately declined in Cycle 7. In the entire process, the solution pH increased only slightly from 7.0 to 7.8, which was different from other unbuffered nZVI reduction systems reported before. Characterization of the particle surface morphology and composition revealed an important role of Fe oxyhydroxide formation in self-buffering the solution pH and sustaining a high nZVI reactivity. Our study provides new knowledge on the nZVI dechlorination process and may offer implications for extending the lifetime of nZVI in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation applications.
Exploring the zero-valent iron (ZVI) mediated transformation of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in anammox system using FT-ICR MS and fluorescence spectroscopy

Abstract:With fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), this study evaluated the performance of zero-valent iron (ZVI) enhanced anammox process for treating fulvic acids (FA)-containing wastewater and investigated the fate of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) at the molecular level. The results showed that ZVI increased the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of the anammox system by approximately 10% and reduced the organic matter fluorescence intensity by 21%. Specifically, microbial humic-like C1 and terrestrial humic-like C4 components were preferentially degraded by ZVI among the fluorescence components (C1-C4). Moreover, ZVI significantly altered the transformation pathways of DON molecules in anammox. The number of precursors molecular formulas increased from 1617 to 2002, attributed to the elimination of high molecular weight (MW) (>500 Da) molecules. Specifically, DON molecules with high O/C were degraded under the effect of ZVI, while some high MW were resisted. The original products generated from anammox consortia metabolism and FA degradation underwent secondary reactions with ZVI, thereby decreased the O/C of products molecular formulas. Furthermore, anammox process was subjected to the most carboxylic acid reaction, including decarboxylation and reduction of carboxylic acids. For CHON molecules, a significant number of reactions involving the reduction of nitro groups contributed to the reduction of wastewater toxicity, which improved the overall performance.
Synthesis, characterization and performance of high energy ball milled meso-scale zero valent iron in Fenton reaction

Abstract:Understanding contaminant degradation by different sized zero valent iron (ZVI) particles is one important aspect in addressing the long-term stability of these particles in field studies. In this study, meso zero valent iron (mZVI) particles were synthesised in a milling time of 10 h using ball milling technique. The efficacy of mZVI particles for removal of phenol was quantitatively evaluated in comparison with coarse zero valent iron (cZVI) and nano zero valent iron (nZVI) particles. Phenol degradation experiments were carried out in sacrificial batch mode at room temperature independently with cZVI, nZVI and mZVI under varied pH conditions of 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10. Batch experiments substantiating the reactivity of mZVI under unbuffered pH system were also carried out and compared with buffered and poorly buffered pH systems. mZVI particles showed consistent phenol degradation at circum-neutral pH with efficiency of 44%, 67%, and 89% in a span of 5, 10 and 20 min respectively. The dissolved iron species and residual iron formation were also measured as a function of pH. Unbuffered systems at circum-neutral pH produced less residual iron when compared to buffered and poorly buffered systems. At this pH, oxidation of Fe(2+) produced a different oxidant Ferryl ion, which was found to effectively participate in phenol degradation.

Abstract:Carbon-coated nanoscale zero-valent iron () is a robust active material in wastewater treatment. Small particle size and high content of zero valent iron nanoparticles (Fe° NPs) in composites ensure their desired activity in Fenton-like reaction. We mechanochemically prepared Fe-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Fe-EDTA), Fe-aminoterephthalic acid (Fe-ATA), and Fe-melamine (Fe-MA) complex as starting materials to synthesize The coordination ability between iron and ligands determines the particle size and distribution of Fe NPs. derived from Fe-EDTA possessed 97.6 % of Fe° NPs (4 nm-in-diameter), exhibited strong catalytic ability for sulfamethazine removal with and without the addition of H2O2, but also encountered serious erosion and poor reusability. generated from Fe-ATA manifested reasonable activity and excellent stability and reusability in Fenton-like reaction, which was contributed by the suitable particle size (6 nm) and special topological structure. produced from Fe-MA exhibited bad catalytic performance and reusability due to its larger Fe NPs size (300 nm).

Abstract:Sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron (SmZVI) attracts much attention recently in remediation of contaminated groundwater, but whether polymer coating on SmZVI would impact on its reactivity and capacity is yet to be understood. In this work, SmZVI was prepared by milling mZVI with elemental sulfur, and its stability in agar solution was evaluated. The impact of polymer coating on SmZVI grains' capacity and reactivity for chromate reduction was then examined. Experimental results indicated that SmZVI having the best overall performance was attained by grinding mZVI with elemental sulfur at 0.05 S/Fe molar ratio for 10 h. SmZVI's stability can be substantially improved if dispersed in 2.0 g/L agar solution. Existence of agar films on the SmZVI grain (A-SmZVI) lowered the material's capacity for chromate reduction by 56%, and the associated reaction kinetics by 70.4%, as estimated by pseudo first-order reaction model using the early-stage experimental data. Analysis of XPS spectra of A-SmZVI post reaction with chromate indicated that multiple reductive species including Fe0, Fe(II), FeS, and S(-II) may have jointly participated in the redox reaction taking place on the A-SmZVI-water interface. Fitting of XPS data supported that S(-II) was oxidized to SO42-, S2O32-, and S0, in order of decreasing surface concentration.
