Abstract:In this paper the highlights of both experimental and theoretical studies on quantum manipulations and characterizations of single molecule on surfaces were reviewed briefly.Some progresses of our research team using the scanning tunneling microscope(STM) technique and density functional theory(DFT) calculation were introduced.A C_(60) native cage structure was observed on a self-assembled monolayer of an alkylthiol with a low temperature STM.A novel topological order originating from the orientation of C_(60) molecules was found with orientational domain boundaries.The energy-resolved metal-cage hybrid states of a single endohedral metallofullerene Dy@C_(82) were mapped.The relative position of the Dy atom in the cage and the orientation of the molecule were inferred by comparing the experimental results with theoretical simulations.The I-V measurements based on single-electron spectroscopy shown fine structures in the I-V curves of crystalline Pd nanoparticles caused by the discrete energy levels,while amorphous Pd nanoparticles of similar particle size had I-V curves with equidistant Coulomb staircases.The suppression of the quantum confinement effect in the amorphous state resulted from the combination of a static effect due to the disorder and a dynamic effect caused by electron-electron scattering.Negative differential resistance molecular device was realized involving two C_(60) molecules,one is adsorbed on the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and the other was on the surface of the hexanethiol self-assembled monolayer.The narrow local density of states features near the Fermi energy of C_(60) molecule led to the obvious NDR effect.By placing a single C_(59)N molecule in a double-barrier tunnel junction via the single-electron tunneling effect and special electronic structure of the C_(59)N molecule,a new type of single molecular rectifier device was built.The Kondo effect exerted by a magnetic ion depends on its chemical environment.Cutting away eight hydrogen atoms from the CoPc molecule with voltage pulses from a STM tip allowed the four lobes of this molecule to chemically bond to the gold substrate.The localized spin was recovered in this artificial molecular structure.
