Abstract:An iron-making blast furnace (BF) is a moving bed reactor involving counter-, co- and cross-current flows of gas, powder, liquids and solids, coupled with heat exchange and chemical reactions. The behaviour of multiple phases directly affects the stability and productivity of the furnace. Therefore, understanding these phenomena is of paramount importance to the control and optimisation of the process. In the present paper, a mathematical model is proposed to describe the behaviour of fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions in a BF, in which gas, solid and liquid phases affect each other via interaction forces and their flows are competing for the space. Based on the developed BF model, the different cohesive zone (CZ) treatments and their application in the modelling have been investigated. Results show the CZ treatment is very important in the BF modelling. Among them, layered CZ treatment shows the advantage in BF modelling in terms of the permeability prediction. Its characteristics are further demonstrated through the modelling of the transient BF process.
