Abstract:This article proposes a miniature triaxial force-temperature sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for catheter ablation. The sensor comprises two miniature flexible hinges, a top cavity, and five tightly suspended optical fibers. The cavity contains an FBG unit for independent temperature sensing, enabling effective temperature decoupling and accurate force measurements. Theoretical models are developed based on the sensor design and finite element simulation validates the sensor’s static performance. Static experiments are conducted on the sensor, demonstrating excellent linearity and sensitivity with force resolutions of (1.65, 2.26, 7.66 mN) in $X$ -, $Y$ -, and $Z$ -directions. A nonlinear neural network model is developed to obtain highly accurate force measurements in arbitrary directions, yielding root mean square errors (RMSEs) of below 2% of the full scale. Temperature compensation experiments are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the temperature-compensated forces, resulting in RMSEs of (30.7, 35.3, 39.8 mN) in $X$ -, $Y$ -, and $Z$ -directions. In vitro porcine heart experiments are performed for varying loads and varying temperature conditions, respectively, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensor. The results suggest that this sensor has a high potential for use in cardiac catheter ablation sensing.
