Abstract:Solid holdup is one of the important parameters in fast fluidized beds (FFBs). The separate-phase-coexistence model was optimized to predict the solid holdup in the fully developed upper dilute region. With the improved model, the solid holdups under different conditions were obtained for typical Geldart Group A and Group B particles (fluidized cracking catalysts (FCC) and sand particles, respectively). Moreover, the effects of particle properties, riser diameter, and operational parameters were analyzed. Results show that the improved model is superior in terms of accuracy and adaptability compared with the original separate-phase-coexistence model. Solid holdup is strongly influenced by particle properties, operating conditions, and riser sizes. The holdup is inversely proportional to particle density, rapidly decreasing with increasing particle density; however, it gradually decreases with increasing particle diameter. In the initial stage, the increase in solid holdup with the solid flow rate is virtually exponential; however, in the later stage, its increase is virtually linear. Moreover, it gradually decreases with increasing gas velocity. As to the riser size, the solid holdup gradually increases with the riser diameter. These results provide further insight into the gas–solid hydrodynamics of FFBs.
