Abstract:CoCrNi multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) has gained increasing interest due to its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. To further improve its strength and corrosion resistance, this study designed novel (CoCrNi)100-xMox (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, at%) MPEAs, with a primary focus on the influences of Mo addition on their microstructures, mechanical properties, and corrosion behaviors of the MPEAs. Microstructural characterizations showed that with the increase in Mo content from 0 to 4, the microstructures of (CoCrNi)100-xMox MPEAs gradually transformed from FCC single-phase to FCC & sigma dual-phase structure, along with the formation of dendrites. Mechanical testing results exhibited increased strength of the MPEAs with Mo element increasing, which is due to solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. Furthermore, corrosion testing results at 3.5 wt% NaCl solution revealed that the corrosion current density of the (CoCrNi)100-xMox MPEAs firstly decreased and then increased with increasing Mo content from 0 to 4. Among them, (CoCrNi)97Mo3 MPEA demonstrated the best corrosion resistance, surpassing most conventionally corrosion-resistant Titanium alloys and MPEAs. This is due to its single-phase structure, which prevents galvanic coupling corrosion, and the addition of minor Mo, which promotes Cr2O3 formation in the passivation film.
