Abstract:Research on indigenous-language media in Africa is often neglected for several reasons, such as an obsession with research on mainstream media that uses colonial languages of English, French and Portuguese and a general lack of scholarly interest. This semi-systematic review paper looks at the research trajectory of the last two decades, identifying gaps and proposing a new research agenda. Available research conducted from a cultural studies and critical theory perspective reveals the intersection of indigenous-language media with gender and health communication; democracy and development; economics and management; and digitalisation. A broadened new research agenda that follows the critical theory tradition is proposed to critique the dominance of mainstream media together with a decolonial reform agenda that appreciates the importance of indigenous-language media in Africa. Research highlighting new case studies, representations, audiences, business models, innovation and digital journalism by indigenous-language media is proposed.

Abstract:The study of communication in Africa, much like the continent, has been the subject of controversy and consternation, with widely changing fortunes that wax and wane at different times. Africa’s colonial experience and the imposition of Western communication constructs inform the theoretical and methodological approaches to African communication scholarship. This essay examines the accomplishments of African communication scholarship attained out of a long history of engagement with intellectual debates about de-Westernization. We discuss how African communication scholars can foreground their commitment to maintaining the integrity of African scholarship in advancing African perspectives in communication studies.

Abstract:International Communication Gazette, Ahead of Print. With the Joe Biden–Kamala Harris administration working toward the resetting of policies and strategies toward Africa and China, the question of whether African journalists will be accorded a chance to tell an African narrative amid the trilateral relationship has become more apparent. The influence exerted by China in African poses questions of whether China is "constructively" reporting Africa and whether journalists do see themselves as telling an African story. This study interrogates the role of African journalistic paradigms within a broader framework of what it means to constructively report Africa. It argues that despite the overwhelming challenges, the African media can tell its narrative if, (a). it seriously interrogates its journalism education system, (b). focus on in-depth reporting as opposed to efficiency and convenience, and (c). value its epistemologies and localize its content.

Abstract:Since communication refers to the sharing of information by any effective means, there is no doubt it entails the ability to make meaning of realities. In this sense, communication is cultural as much as it is human. Since that is the case, its theories cannot be fabricated in the abstract, but must be anchored in people's everyday lifestyles and cultures. Hence, like every other discipline, Africanising communication science is as much a possibility as theorising its perspectives from African contexts and experiences. Focusing on the negative challenges confronting the continent might make scholars see only the difficulties that problematise the application of theories to Africa's reality, which only betrays the Anglo-American stereotypical views of the continent. The argument is made here that the starting point of any theory of communication has to lie with the identity and culture of those involved in the communication process. Specifically by using selected films from Africa, this author considers the exploration of African identity and culture (from a bottom-up paradigm) as the primary starting point to tease out relevant theories of communication for and from an African cultural context.

Abstract:Communication Studies in Chinese mainland start from the most practical spheres of audience research,media management and environmental studies.Introductory articles about Western communication theories and methods also account for a high proportion.Studies on the media literacy and public communication appear until relatively recent years,and the number of organizational communication and interpersonal communication research is still fairly small. The number of studies based on the cases of Chinese mainland is in exponential increase.Moreover,with the increase of international exchanges and the expansion of researcher's academic view in communication,there are more research findings in the communication mechanisms of European countries and the United States,especially in public communication, of which China showed an obvious lack.

Abstract:Journalism studies have crystallized into a well-defined sub-discipline in the field of media and communication studies. As a sub-discipline, it has also burgeoned into a tapestry of cultures, epistemologies, ways of knowing and doing that exist in tension or dialogue with each other. The establishment of the Journalism studies journal about two decades ago has created the much-needed platform for cultural ferment and a kind of heterotopia that is necessary to transform the sub-discipline. Needless to say, the debate on decolonizing journalism as a study and practice is increasingly taking shape. Like other disciplines, journalism studies is engaged in a reflective and soul-searching journey about the need to transform itself towards a more diverse and inclusive multicultural theory that is anchored on the values of humanity, social justice, and cognitive justice.

The Transformation of Communication Studies in the New Media Age

Abstract:The emergence of new information and communication technologies and new social communication practices has called for the transformation of communication studies.Communication researchers have been asking a number of questions:Can the new information and communication technologies lead to a paradigm shift in communication theories?Are classic communication theories still applicable to the new media environment?What are the new research questions that emerge in the new media age?What are the interactions between the new information and communication technologies and new media research?How do the new media studies transform the current communication research?How should Chinese new media research be developed under the background of globalization and unique context of Chinese society and culture ? Based on the review of previous research,this study analyzes three approaches to new media studies,namely social scientific,critical,and interpretive paradigms,and reveals three findings.First,it is the changing communication activities and practices in which people engage that lead to the changing views of communication,such as a shift from″media-audience″study to ″new media-user″study.Moreover,the development of new media industry not only generates new research objects and theories,but offers new perspectives and methods to test classic theories.Second,in examining the relationship between new media technologies and social change,this study concludes that technological determinism is usually a dominant paradigm in the early phase of new media technologies.As these new technologies diffuse,researchers will turn to a social shaping perspective that focuses on how new media technologies are shaped by various social forces on the one hand,and are shaping social life in socio-historical contexts on the other.Third,the emergence of new media events has become a unique and influential communication phenomenon that attracts the attention of a large number of Chinese communication researchers.Nevertheless,most of these studies are case studies and are limited to the application of western theories to the Chinese society,thus failing to provide any insight into the communication mechanism in the Chinese new media environment.Against such a backdrop,this study suggests apossible direction for Chinese scholars to facilitate a″cultural shift″of new media research,to adopt the″thick description″method of cultural sociology to reveal the specific implications of new media events,and to uncover the socio-psychological consequences of these events and their associated social factors in the Chinese context.The goal is to highlight the interplay of different social forces in new media studies in transitional China.Meanwhile,scholars should take advantage of new media technologies to develop new research methods and procedures,to explore unique research questions in the Chinese social and cultural context,and to generate new theories that can facilitate the development of communication research.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to contribute in a reflexive way to the hot debate about China and Africa relations. The criticisms that China has received for her activities in Africa usually come from western countries that have their own interests in the area. Specifically, as it will be seen, countries like France and the United States have developed a deep military, political, economic and cultural influence in Africa that makes them the actual neo-colonial powers in the region. Paradoxically, the western media plays an important role in emphasizing some negative news related to China’s activities in Africa, accusing it to have neo-colonialist behaviours; while they strategically cover and underreport activities from their own countries in the continent. Actually this media strategy can turn to be really effective considering the emphasis and efforts that China makes in improving its own international image. Ecological Civilisation Discourse in Xinhua’s African Newswires: Towards a Greener Agency?

Abstract:How does Chinese central media represent Africa through its environmental news? This article argues that the way in which Chinese central media organisations have reported environmental issues across the African continent has altered from a reactive "charm defensive" towards the promotion of a developmental model: "Ecological Civilisation". Based on a critical discourse analysis of headline African news published by the Xinhua News Agency, this research illustrates the emergence of this new, unexpected turn in Chinese representations of Africa, as well as highlighting the coherencies and tensions within this discourse. Questioning why this change in the emphasis of content has occurred, it investigates explanations at the macro-, mezzo-, and micro-levels of analysis, concluding that the evidence indicates that Xinhua's content remains closely linked to the soft power goals of the Chinese Communist Party. However, the presence of risk discourses in some reports indicates that the hegemonic discourse is altering. This could potentially be the result of Xinhua's own commercial objectives in Africa, or of the subjectivities of individual Xinhua journalists seeping into reports. This research provides significant contributions to an understanding of Chinese soft power in Africa, the ecology of Chinese media in Africa, and the development of environmental discourses.

From the configuration of media systems to the decision-making of the voting public, the changes have permeated through almost every level of society, affecting political institutions, political actors, citizen groups, and mass media. For each aspect, a synopsis of classical and emergent political communication theories, contemporary and contentious political issues, and cutting-edge research adds to the discussion of new media. The discussion is unfolded with an account of research of new media effects on politics in international setting and cross-cultural contexts with insights of how Western theories and research apply (or fail to) in international contexts.

Abstract:Scholars argue that the history of communication technology is a history of social change, often in unpredictable ways under the influence of various socio-political forces and technological innovations. How does this insight apply to China which has witnessed a boom of new media technologies amidst rapid social change? To what extent does new media research conducted by Chinese scholars help us understand the process of new media diffusion and consumption in China? By reviewing research published in Chinese-language scholarly journals, this paper reviews current new media research in China by tracing trends in such research, identifying research agenda, applications of theory, and use of methodology. Gaps in Chinese new media research will be explored; directions that lead to further research will be suggested.

Abstract:The university is an institution of higher education and scientific research and an essential means of cultural and scientific development.the individual is scientifically and culturally educated. it prepares frameworks in various disciplines of science to meet the economic, political and social needs included in national development plans. this is only possible through scientific research as the appropriate means of fact-finding and reaching accurate scientific results. Media and communication today continues to receive great attention from researchers and scientists specializing in this intellectual field of media and journalism studies due to the social role played by the media, in order to reach academic theories and applied models that frame media practice.in one way or another, the latter must be influenced by theoretical guidance in the sense of specialized theorizing by researchers. The current problem is not in theoretical guidance or academic research, but rather what a researcher should acquire during his training in media and communication, or in other words, how to reduce the gap between the theoretical and applied aspects of media education. Abstract:This article traces the development trajectory of Chinese intellectual history of journalism and communication since 2017.The study finds that since 2017,when the academic community began to discuss the media as a unique disciplinary perspective of journalism and communication,not only the traditional intellectual history research of journalism and communication,but also the journalism history and media history research have undergone different degrees of media theory transformation.Among them,the theoretical achievements of media materiality and media ontology are the most prominent.This series of academic achievements seem to remind us that we should use local media practice as a starting point,create new interpretive space and dialogue possibilities for intellectual history research of journalism and communication,and lay the foundation for constructing the independent knowledge system of Chinese journalism and communication.
