Abstract:An easy and delicate approach using cheap carbon source as conductive materials to construct 3D sequential porous structural Na3V2(PO4)3/C(NVP/C) with high performance for cathode materials of sodium ion battery is highly desired. In this paper, the NVP/C with 3D sequential porous structure is constructed by a delicate approach named as "cooking porridge" including evaporation and calcination stages. Especially, during evaporation, the viscosity of NVP/C precursor is optimized by controlling the adding quantity of citric acid, thus leading to a 3D sequential porous structure with a high specific surface area. Furthermore, the NVP/C with a 3D sequential porous structure enables the electrolyte to interior easily, providing more active sites for redox reaction and shortening the diffusion path of electron and sodium ion. Therefore, benefited from its unique structure, as cathode material of sodium ion batteries, the 3D sequential porous structural NVP/C exhibits high specific capacities(115.7, 88.9 and 74.4 mA·h/g at current rates of 1, 20 and 50 C, respectively) and excellent cycling stability (107.5 and 80.4 mA·h/g are remained at a current density of 1 C after 500 cycles and at a current density of 20 C after 2200 cycles, respectively).

Abstract:A hydrogel self-templated method was developed to produce Na3V2(PO4)3@C@CNT 2D porous network (denoted as NVP@C@CNT) comprising 0D carbon coated Na3V2(PO4)3 nanoparticles and 1D carbon nanotubes. Such fascinating architecture offers high electronic and ionic conductivity, structure stability, as well as long-term cycling when used as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The cathode displays an ultralong cyclability (94% capacity retention after 4500 cycles at 5C) and high rate capability. Such performance derives from the synergistic effect of porous network structure and carbon coating, which accelerates ion diffusion and improves structural integrity. Equally important, the proposed method provides a new avenue for the preparation of 2D porous materials for advanced energy storage applications.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) is regarded as a prospective cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, its electrochemical performance is restricted by poor intrinsic conductivity. Herein, we prepare Na3V2(PO4)3 with Zn2+ ions doping via sol-gel method and enwrap it by carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in which CNTs act as conductive regent. The combined effects of CNTs and Zn2+ ions, especially for Na3.07V1.93Zn0.07(PO4)3@CNTs composite, greatly improving the kinetic performance of pristine NVP. Specifically, Na3.07V1.93Zn0.07(PO4)3@CNTs composite possesses an initial capacity of 114.9 mAh g−1, close to the theoretical value (117.6 mAh g−1). Moreover, the composite exhibits a discharge capacity of 86.9 mAh g−1 at 15 C after 500 cycles with the retention rate of approximately 90.7%, demonstrating its high cyclic stability in long-cycling tests. Our theoretical results demonstrate that both the band gap and migration energy barrier can be reduced by Zn2+ substitution, which explains the improved electrical conductivity and ion diffusion rate. Overall, this design principle provides a promising method for fabricating Na3V2(PO4)3 material as high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Na superionic conductor (NASICON)–type Na3V2(PO4)3(NVP) has attracted great attention due to its unique conductive framework and high capacity. However, the poor intrinsic conductivity seriously restricted the further development. This work proposes an effective strategy of introducing the beneficial carbon-based matrix materials including reduced graphene oxide (rGO), polypyrrole (ppy), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the NVP system. The modified composites reveal particular morphological features and enhanced specific surface areas, benefiting to improve the kinetic characteristics and sodium storage performance. Accordingly, the optimized NVP/C@CNT composite shows superior electrochemical performance. It can release a high reversible discharge capacity of 98.7 mAh g−1 at the 0.1 C rate. Meanwhile, a high capacity retention of 81% is obtained after 500 cycles at 2 C. Moreover, the kinetic characteristics demonstrate that the optimized NVP/C@CNT sample shows a high Na+ diffusion coefficient. This work offers a unique avenue for the development of the modification and synthesis of polyanion cathodes for sodium ion batteries.Graphical abstractThe modified samples combined with carbon-based matrix materials for the NVP system are successfully synthesized through a facile sol–gel method.

Abstract:3D interconnected porous carbon coated Na3V2(PO4)3/C (NVP/C) composites were calcined after production using an improved sol-gel combustion method. A large surface area was produced from the porous structure, providing a charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby shortening ion diffusion lengths. A 3D conductive network beneficial to electronic transport was formed by covering the thin walls of the 3D interconnected pores with a uniform and amorphous carbon layer. The electrochemical performance of the NVP/C composite was notably impacted by the thickness of the carbon layer, determined by the residual carbon content. When the precursor was added with 10 wt% glucose, the final NVP/C-G10% composite, having an optimum carbon layer thickness, achieved an exceptional electrochemical property, making it suitable for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). At the rate of 0.2C, the NVP/C-G10% composite possessed a high capacity of 118.0 mAh/g. With a rate of 10 C, the NVP/C-G10% electrode exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 64.4 mAh/g; after 1000 cycles this electrode has a retention capacity of 81.5%. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicated that, under lower polarization, NVP/C-G10% composite had an increased sodium ion diffusion coefficient and reduced transfer resistance charge, resulting in a high rate performance and cyclic stability.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) with superior electrochemical performance has attracted enormous attention with the development of sodium ion batteries. The structural aggregation as well as poor conductivity of NVP hinder its application in high rate perforamance cathode with long stablity. In this paper, Na3V2-xMox(PO4)3@C was successfully prepared through two steps method, including sol-gel and solid state thermal reduction. The optimal doping amount of Mo was defined by experiment. When x was 0.15, the Na3V1.85Mo0.15(PO4)3@C sample has the best cycle performance and rate performance. The discharge capacity of Na3V1.85Mo0.15(PO4)3@C could reach 117.26 mA·h·g-1 at 0.1 C. The discharge capacity retention was found to be 94.5% after 600 cycles at 5 C.

Abstract:Polyanion-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) is an overwhelmingly attractive cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its high structural stability and fast Na+ mobility. However, its practical application is strongly plagued by either nanoscale particle size or poor rate performance. Herein, a micro/nanocomposite NVP cathode with a hierarchical porous structure is proposed to solve the problem. The microscale NVP material assembled by interconnected nanoflakes with N-doped carbon coating that is capable of simultaneously providing fast carrier transmission dynamics and outstanding structural integrity exhibits precedent sodium-storage behavior. It delivers a superior rate capability (79.1 mAh g–1 at 200C) and excellent long-life cycling (capacity retention of 73.4% after 10 000 cycles at 100C). Remarkably, a pouch-type sodium-ion full cell consisting of the as-obtained NVP cathode and a hard carbon anode demonstrates the gravimetric energy density as high as 212 Wh kg–1 and an exceptional rate performance (71.8 mAh g–1 at 10C). Abstract:Na super ionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) has been regarded as a prospective candidate of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to its excellent structural stability, relatively high capacity and working voltage. However, the poor cyclability and rate capability, resulting from its low intrinsic electronic conductivity, have become a serious obstacle to their practical large-scale application. In this work, N-doped carbon coated NVPF composites (NVPF@NC) were successfully synthesized via a simple sol–gel method, in which low-cost polyvinylpyrrolidone was introduced as a nitrogen source. After high-temperature pyrolysis, a highly conductive N-doped carbon layer was in-situ constructed on the particle surface to enhance the sodium storage performance of NVPF. The optimized NVPF@NC cathode delivered high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and long-term cycle life compared to pristine NVPF@C. The remarkable electrochemical performance of NVPF@NC cathode benefits from the modification strategy of introducing a heteroatom-doped carbon layer, triggering the formation of extrinsic defects and active sites in the N-doped amorphous carbon layer, which greatly enhances the electrical conductivity and the diffusion rate of sodium ions. This work provides a facile and effective approach for the preparation of N-doped carbon coated NVPF with remarkable sodium storage properties, which could be extended to other electrode materials electrochemical for energy storage.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3V2(PO4)(3)(NVP) is one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Here, we report a simple sol gel method to prepare NVP@C porous microspheres network for high performance SIBs, which can realize NVP nanoparticles successfully embedding into acetylene carbon (SP) and multiple walled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) matrices. The electrochemical characterizations demonstrate that both NVP/SP and NVP/MCNTs show excellent cell performance with high rate ability and stable reversibility, especially for the NVP/MCNTs sample. In particular, as high as 112.8 mAh/g and 70 mAh/g of the discharge capacity for NVP/MCNTs system can be delivered at 0.2C and 10C, respectively. Furthermore, a good capacity retention of 90% can be maintained after 400 cycles at 1C rate. Moreover, the enhanced electrode performance is ascribed to the contribution from both of the porous microspheres morphology and functional carbon matrices, which can favor the migration of both electrons and ions. Abstract:Porous Na3V2(PO4)(3)@ C nanocomposites enwrapped in a 3D graphene network were prepared using a simple freeze-drying-assisted thermal treatment method. The carbon layer and 3D graphene network provide not only a 3D conductive network but also a double restriction on the aggregation of Na3V2(PO4)(3) particles that have a high crystallinity under high temperature treatment. Due to the high electrochemical activity of the highly crystalline Na3V2(PO4)(3) nanoparticles and 3D conductive network, the novel NVP@C/Gmaterial displays a superior rate capability (76 mA h g(-1) at 60C) and ultra-long cyclability (82% capacity retention for 1500 cycles at 40C) when used in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) has been considered as one of the most promising candidates as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIB), owing to its high structural stability and a three-dimensional (3D) ion diffusion channel. However, low electronic conductivity and limited intrinsic Na+ diffusion kinetics seriously restrict its practical applications, especially at high current rates. Herein, we report a unique 3D interconnected hybrid architecture assembled from Ca-doped NVP embedded in in situ-generated N-doped carbon nanosheet networks. Such hybrids combine the advantages of Na site regulations and a 3D interconnected conductive network in which the former can remarkably enhance Na+ migration capability, owing to the reduced Na+ diffusion barrier, while the latter can efficiently inhibit self-aggregation of nanobuilding blocks and afford intimate contact and an electronic connection between active materials and 3D carbon scaffolds, thus leading to abundant active sites and higher structural stability than each component alone. Benefiting from these merits, the obtained hybrids exhibit superior rate capability (83.0 mAh g–1 up to 15C) and excellent cycling stability with capacity retentions of 93.1% after 5000 cycles at room temperature and 96.3% after 500 cycles at zero temperature. Such work provides a facile avenue for modulating and optimizing polyanion cathode materials with synergistically enhanced electron/ion transport kinetics at both the solid and electrode/electrolyte interface for energy-related applications.

Abstract:Inspired by biomineralization, we develop a facile synthesis route to obtain 3D porous foam-like Na3V2(PO4)3@C composites consisting of ultra-small Na3V2(PO4)3 particles in situ wrapped with carbon architecture derived from yeast as storing sodium cathode. 3D carbon architecture with high electrical conductivity is endowed with important effect on bio-restricting the aggregation of Na3V2(PO4)3 nanoparticles, improving Na+ diffusion coefficient. As a result, the Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathode shows good rate performance with 109 mAh g−1 and 44 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C and 20 C, respectively. Besides, the storage mechanism and structure evolution of Na3V2(PO4)3@C have been certified by ex situ XRD and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The unique biomineralization process enables to improve the electrochemical performances of Na3V2(PO4)3 by a facile self-organized process in a friendly environment. Therefore, biomineralization is a promising way to prepare high-performance cathode material with mesoporous structure for batteries.

Abstract:A sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) with a 3D framework is a promising cathode material for sodium ion batteries. We used citric and oxalic acids as carbon sources to prepare carbon-coated NVP/C cathode materials by a sol-gel method. Their effect on the crystal structure, morphology and electrochemical performance of the coated NVP were investigated. Results indicate that compared with the NVP/C prepared from oxalic acid, NVP/C using citric acid as the carbon source has larger unit cell parameters of NVP, a smaller particle size, a thinner carbon coating layer, wider channels and shortened paths for Na+ migration, and superior kinetic characteristics. It had a high capacity of 112.3 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and an excellent rate capability with reversible capacities of 90.0 and 89.1 mAh g−1 at 2 and 5 C, respectively. It also had an excellent cycling stability with capacity retention rates of nearly 100%, 92.7% and 90.0% after cycling 200 times at 1, 2 and 5 C, respectively. It is therefore a promising cathode material for practical use.

Abstract:High electronic conductivity and ionic conductivity are important for Na3V2(PO4)(3) (NVP) to be used in Na-ion and Na-Li hybrid-ion battery. In this work, a three dimentional (3D) Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C (NVP/C) fiber membrane with nano carbon-coated NVP particles uniformly embedded on the surface of carbon fibers was successfully prepared by a modified electrospinning technique. The combined use of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the fiber precursor promotes the distribution of NVP particles and maintains the stability of 3D long-range conductive networks. The NVP/C fiber membrane can be used as self-standing cathodes for Na-ion battery. The discharge capacity of the NVP/C-Na battery is 110.9, 108.1, 104.6, 104.3, 95.6 and 72.4 mAh/g at the current densities of 0.1C, 0.2C, 0.5C, 1C, 5C and 10C, respectively. After the rate tests, the Na3V2(PO4)(3)/C fiber membrane cathode still exhibits excellent cycle stability at 0.5C, 5C and 10C with a retention discharge capacity of 102, 87.9 and 57.1mAh/g after 100 cycles. Simultaneously, this NVP/C fiber membrane can also be used as cathodes for Na-Li hybrid-ion battery, and shows good electrochemical performance in the voltage range of 2.5-4.8 V. Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)2F3 with a high theoretical energy density, robust 3D structure, and superior thermal stability has become one of the popular cathode materials for sodium ion batteries. Currently, its poor intrinsic electronic conductivity leads to unsatisfactory rate performance, which is still the bottleneck for commercializing sodium-ion batteries. In this work, carbon nanotube–intertwined Na3V2(PO4)2F3 nanospheres (notated as NVPF@CNTs) are successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method and subsequent heat treatment. In NVPF@CNTs composites, the carbon nanotubes constituted a continuous conductive 3D carbon network, realizing the improvement of electrical conductivity. The NVPF nanospheres are exposed to the electrolyte to increase the contact area with the electrolyte and greatly shorten the diffusion distance of Na+. The unique architecture endorses superior electrochemical performance and good reaction kinetics. Thus, the NVPF@CNTs as cathode exhibits good cycling performance (117.6 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C after 300 cycles) and rate capability (73.4 mAh g−1 at 5 C with a high capacity retention ratio of 91.6% after 600 cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance for NVPF@CNTs opens up a new way to achieve high performance of sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:NASICON (super ionic conductor)-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) has been widely studied as a very promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity, high voltage platform, good chemical stability, its unique three-dimensional (3D) open crystal structure, and the de/intercalation of sodium ions during charge/discharge. However, the high Na+ diffusion ability of NVP is accompanied by the large bulk structure and poor electronic conductivity, which leads to poor electrochemical performance in terms of rate capability and cycling stability and thus impedes its practical application. Herein, the research development of NVP sodium ion cathode materials are reviewed in recent years. Based on the crystal structure and ion migration mechanism of NVP materials, the sodium storage mechanism and theoretical capacitance of NVP materials are introduced, and the effects of different preparation methods on the electrochemical properties of NVP materials are summarized and compared. The modification research strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of NVP electrode materials are mainly discussed, including carbon material modification, ion doping, and material Nano-crystallization. Finally, some remarks are made on the challenges and prospects for the future development of NVP cathodes.

Preparation of Na3V2(PO4)3 Cathode Materials by Hydrothermal Assisted Sol-Gel Method for Sodium -Ion Batteries

Abstract:Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathode material of the sodium ion battery (1 C=117 mAh g-1) has a NASICON-type structure, which not only facilitates the rapid migration of sodium ions, but also has a small volume deformation during sodium ion de-intercalation and the main frame mechanism remains unchanged, and thus is seen as an energy storage material for a wide range of applications, but has a limited electronic conductivity due to its structure. In this paper, NVP cathode materials with finer primary particles are successfully prepared using a simple hydrothermal treatment-assisted sol-gel method. The increased pore size of the NVP materials prepared under the hydrothermal process allows for more active sites and more effective resistance to the volume deformation of sodium ions during insertion/extraction processes, effectively facilitating the diffusion of ions and electrons. The Na3V2(PO4)3 material obtained by the optimized process exhibited good crystallinity in XRD characterization, as well as superior electrochemical properties in a series of electrochemical tests. A specific capacitance of 106.3 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C is demonstrated, compared to 96.5 mAh g-1 for Na3V2(PO4)3 without hydrothermal treatment, and cycling performance is also improved with 93% capacity retention. The calculated sodium ion diffusion coefficient (DNa = 5.68 × 10-14) obtained after EIS curve fitting of the improved sample illustrates that the pore structure is beneficial to the performance of the Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode material.

Abstract:Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is an effective and rapid method for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials. However, the control over size, morphology, and microstructure are rather limited in SCS. Here, we develop a novel ultrasonic-assisted solution combustion route to synthesize the porous and nano-sized Na3V2(PO4)3/C composites, and reveal the effects of ultrasound on the structural evolution of NVP/C. Due to the cavitation effects generated from ultrasonic irradiation, the ultrasonic-assisted SCS can produce honeycomb precursor, which can be further transformed into porous Na3V2(PO4)3/C with reticular and hollow structures after thermal treatment. When used as cathode material for Na-ion batteries, the porous Na3V2(PO4)3/C delivers an initial discharge capacity of 118 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and an initial coulombic efficiency of 85%. It can retain 93.8% of the initial capacity after 120 cycles at 0.2 C. The results demonstrate that ultrasonic-assisted SCS can be a new strategy to design crystalline nanomaterials with tunable microstructures.

Abstract:NASICON-type Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) is proposed to be a potential cathode material for sodium-ion battery because of its good structural stability, relatively high capacity and voltage platform. Nonetheless, the poor-rate performance, resulting from its low conductivity, has become a massive obstacle to its practical application. In this work, carbon coating together with morphology controlling were introduced to solve the issue of NVPF. This experiment used a hydrothermal method to prepare Na3V2(PO4)2F3@C (NVPF@C) and explored the impact of surfactants (polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)) on the positive material performance of sodium-ion battery. Through various characterisation, NVPF@C compared its performance with that of untreated products, and verified that appropriate surfactant modification could enhance the performance of the electron conduction and sodium ion diffusion, thus effectively improved the performance of NVPF. Through comparison, it was found that appropriate surface modification with PVP can achieve the effects of specific crystal surface exposure and clusters of porous micron ball structure, and improve the electrochemical performance of NVPF best. Under the charge and discharge ratio of 0.2C, its initial reversible capacity was 127.8 mA h g−1. After 100 cycles, its discharge capacity was 106.1 mA h g−1, and the cycling retention rate reached 82.8%. Compared to the original NVPF, its performance has been dramatically improved.
