Abstract:Air balancing is an important means to reduce energy consumption and improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality for dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS). It effectively distributes the required amount of air to each conditioned zone through dynamic regulation of terminal/branch dampers and fan speed. Up to now, most of the existing air balancing methods are modeled by quadratic models that greatly rely on the accuracy of the collected data and are therefore difficult to obtain satisfactory forecasting results. Noise, outlier and model approximation error are likely to cause large prediction errors in air balancing, leading to increased demand for new methods to overcome these problems. In this paper, a robust air balancing method based on data-driven model is proposed to produce a more accurate prediction of pressure difference. With precise prediction, the proposed method obtains a more accurate balancing result and is more robust against noise and outlier. The proposed method includes three parts: building mathematical model for duct system based on steady-state pressure balance; training model parameters by robust air balancing learning algorithm; estimating damper positions by the damper characteristic curve. The performance of the proposed method is validated on a laboratory duct test-bed with five terminals. The relative error can be controlled with 5.5% in the test cases. Compared with the existing air balancing methods, the proposed method is more accurate in prediction and more robust in the balancing results. The proposed method offers the possibility to obtain a superior balancing performance when sensor accuracy cannot be guaranteed in practical applications.

Abstract:Because of the complexity of the indoor dynamic thermal environment, several kinds of simplified surrogate models, such as zone model and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based reduced-order model, have been developed for fast simulation and control purpose. To test and calibrate the performance of such models, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based test method is presented in this paper. The proposed virtual test model combines a CFD-based air-conditioned room with a single neuron adaptive PID controller, which is programmed using the user-defined function and embedded in the CFD model. Additionally, a space temperature offset model is developed using least squares estimation (LSE). This offset model is used to compensate the temperature difference between actual sensor locations and occupied zones. Test studies not only show the great interoperation between the PID controller and the CFD simulation but also demonstrate the acceptable accuracy of the LSE-based temperature estimation.

Abstract:This article proposes a data-physical hybrid-driven air balancing (DPH-AB) method for the ventilation system. First, a data-driven model is proposed to establish the relationship among the airflow, path pressure drop, pressure, and damper angle in the duct system. Specifically, the airflow-path pressure drop relationship is modeled by the denoising autoencoder neural network (DAENN) while the pressure-angle relationship is obtained by the ridge regression method. Then, the physical information of the duct system is considered together with the proposed data-driven model to find the optimal angle for each damper to minimize the total fan power. With the proposed DPH-AB method, the airflow of all terminals can be accurately adjusted to the desired value while the energy consumption of the duct system can reach the lowest value. It is easy to identify which damper needs to be fully open to save the energy. The experiments verify the accuracy of the proposed DPH-AB method and its energy saving potential. The experiments also demonstrate that the DPH-AB method is robust against the noise in the actual duct system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel distributed cooperative control-based online air balancing (DCC-AB) method for the existing ventilation duct systems. Inspired by the application of distributed cooperative control (DCC) in the field of network communication, the DCC is first introduced into HVAC systems to solve the air balancing problem. Based upon the consensus algorithm, the proposed DCC-AB method realizes air flow balance via a prescribed information exchange among the agents in the duct system. The proposed method also incorporates an additional adjustable term that reflects the total power consumption to optimize the energy efficiency. Compared with the existing air balancing methods, the DCC-AB method offers the following advantages: 1.) It is an online method that can be performed during normal operation of the ventilation system without service interruptions. 2.) The distributed control strategy in this method eliminates the necessity of a centralized supervisory control. 3.) It is a model-free method that requires no prior knowledge on the system topology and duct parameters and is therefore easy to apply in practical use. The operation principle and parametric analysis of the DCC-AB method are carefully discussed in this paper. Experiments have also verified the effectiveness of the proposed DCC-AB method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method applies over a large range of design flow requirements and yields robustness against small sensor noise. A rapid and stable convergence is guaranteed among all tested cases and the maximum absolute percentage error can achieve 2.3%.
An Energy-Saving Oriented Air Balancing Method for Demand Controlled Ventilation Systems with Branch and Black-Box Model

Abstract:This paper proposes an energy-saving oriented air balancing method based on a branch and black-box (B-2) model for multi-zone demand controlled ventilation (DCV) systems. The proposed method can achieve accurate air flow control in each zone, which avoids unnecessary energy consumption caused by over-ventilation. The operating procedures of the proposed method are as follows: Building the B-2 model for the DCV system -> Predicting the terminal static pressures under the given zone design flow values -> Determining the damper angles of each zone based on the static pressure predictions. In the proposed air balancing method, the basic modelling unit is the duct branch, instead of the internal fittings in the previous model-based air balancing method. Therefore, the proposed method does not need to know the complicated fitting information (e.g., elbows, transitions, dampers, etc.,) in its modelling process and therefore becomes much simpler. In addition, the complexity of the proposed B-2 model is also greatly reduced since it is independent with the fitting numbers and does not need to calculate the fitting loss coefficients. Furthermore, the radial basis function (RBF) kernel is also utilized in the proposed method to guarantee the air balancing accuracy. Compared with the existing air balancing methods, the proposed method is more efficient and effective in practice. In the lab, the proposed air balancing method was validated on a real DCV system of 5 zones under various design flow conditions. The experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed method on both the air balancing control accuracy and the energy saving ability.

Abstract:Air balancing is one of the cornerstones of the building environment. Research on air balancing aims to ensure the efficient operation of ventilation systems. However, there are two challenges in the air balancing process. The first issue is accurately calculating the duct resistance under the condition of nonfully developed flow. The other obstacle is calculating the damper adjustment degree when the operating flow characteristics of the dampers are affected. Based on these two challenges, this study first proposes a pressure balance model under the condition of a nonfully developed flow for the resistance calculation. The problem of parameter identification in the model is converted into a multiobjective optimization problem and solved by the elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). In contrast to the traditional pressure balance model, the average error of the resistance calculation can be reduced by 78.83%–82.24%. Second, based on the resistance characteristics (degree, airflow, pressure difference) of the dampers in the duct system, XGBoost is used for machine learning to achieve accurate adjustment of the dampers. Compared with the traditional method that requires checking manuals, the average error of the damper degree calculation can be reduced by 62.27%–94.6%. Finally, the air balancing method proposed in this study is experimentally verified, which has an average relative error of airflow of only 4.11% and a maximum relative error that does not exceed 10%.

Abstract:The authors have previously proposed a 2-stage online distributed cooperative control-based air balancing (DCC-AB) scheme for air duct systems to realize accurate air balancing and energy saving. However, the practical application shows that the previous 2-stage online DCC-AB scheme may encounter convergence failure when mis-specifying the critical damper. In order to fix this problem, this paper further proposes a 3-stage online DCC-AB method. Unlike the 2-stage online DCC-AB method which selects the critical damper based on an empirical rule, the proposed 3-stage online DCC-AB method introduces a special stage at the beginning of the balancing process to identify the right critical damper to totally eliminate the risk of convergence failure. In addition, the proposed 3-stage online DCC-AB method also introduces a time-varying weighted penalty term to accelerate convergence while ensuring the operation stability. Therefore, the proposed 3-stage online DCC-AB method enjoys the following advantages: a) The convergence failure caused by the misspecification of the critical damper is effectively avoided; b) The convergence rate and the balancing accuracy are further improved compared to the previous 2-stage online DCC-AB method. Finally, the proposed 3-stage online DCC-AB method is validated on a laboratory duct system of 5 terminals under different design flow requirements, no failure cases occur and the absolute relative error of terminal flow is controlled within 7.2% in all test scenarios.

Herein, we present the potential fluid method, which uses existing data to nest physical meanings into mathematical iterative processes. Potential fluid method is suitable for PDE, such as CFD problems, including Burgers? equation. Potential fluid method can iteratively determine the steady-state space distribution of PDE. For mathematical reasons, we compare the potential fluid method with the finite difference method and give a detailed explanation.

Abstract:Air balancing is a key technology to reduce energy consumption of ventilation system and improve the quality of indoor living environment. So far, most of the existing data-driven non-iterative air balancing methods only focus on the prediction of terminal damper angle to supply appropriate airflow, but they do not pay attention to the energy-saving constraint of fan voltage and terminal damper. Therefore, their energy efficiencies are not high enough. In this paper, energy-saving constraint strategy of low fan voltage and small damper friction resistance is considered and a novel data-driven non-iterative air balancing model with energy-saving constraint strategy is proposed. The model parameters can be trained by the proposed optimization algorithm inputting acquisition data. Then, given a design airflow rate, the required fan voltage and terminal damper angle can be predicted by the trained model to achieve accurate air balancing control with high energy efficiency. The performance validation of the proposed method is executed on our experimental duct system with five terminals. Compared with the current air balancing method, the proposed method can improve energy saving potential up to 13.7%, while keeping accurate air balancing within 10% relative error standard.

Abstract:It is always a challenge to develop appropriate mathematical model for a direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) system, whose operational parameters are highly coupled and behave non-linearly. Different modeling approaches have their own merits. However, none of the currently available modeling approaches can solely satisfy the requirement, in terms of accuracy and sensitivity, for simultaneous control of air temperature and humidity using a DX A/C system, without any inadequacies. On the other hand, when developing a model for the purpose of controller development rather than investigating complete system characteristics, the focus would be on several key components, and the modeling for other components that are relatively less important may be simplified. Therefore, it is possible to utilize different modeling approaches for different physical processes to develop a novel control-oriented hybrid model, named as semi-physical model (SPM). In this paper, rationales for using different modeling approaches for different physical processes of a DX A/C system are firstly discussed, followed by the development and validation of the SPM. The development of a SPM-based controller for the simultaneous control of air temperature and humidity is also briefly introduced, and its control perform acts as additional evidence for validating the SPM. Practical application: This paper presents a hybrid modeling method, which combines the complementary merits of various modeling approaches and avoid the inadequacies of them based on the analysis of the requirement of controller development. Such a new control-oriented hybrid modeling method can be applied to not only simultaneous temperature and humidity control using a variable-speed DX A/C system but also other control applications where control loops are coupled and system operational characteristics are complicated.
A Gradient-Based Adaptive Balancing Method for Dedicated Outdoor Air System

Abstract:This paper presents an online air balancing method applied in dedicated outdoor air systems, named as gradient-based online adaptive balancing (GOAB) method. The GOAB method derives the damper adjustment rule based on the gradient of the objective function that quantifies the discrepancy between actual flow rate and the set point in normalized form. An adaptive mechanism is applied to capture the change of Jacobian matrix during the balancing process. The optimum direction of damper angle increment is determined based on the null space of the gradient vector to speed up the convergence and ensure at least one damper to be fully open. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed GOAB method offers the following advantages:1.) The method can be performed on a duct system in operation, which provides possibility to re-balance the system under dynamic working conditions; 2.) The energy loss on dampers is minimized without compromising the balancing accuracy. Simulations are performed in MATLAB to investigate several model parameters and provide guidance for the parameter design. Experiments are conducted on a 5-ternimal duct system to validate the proposed method under various design flow requirements. The results show that the maximum absolute percentage error can be controlled within 4.3% among all test cases. This method improves the energy efficiency of the duct system and speeds up the convergence rate towards air balance to save time and cost.

Abstract:Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB procedure) is an important issue of air distribution systems. This paper proposes a distributed finite-time control-based air balancing (DFTC-AB) method for the ventilation duct system. It is employed by using the distributed finite-time control approach which can achieve air balance via exchanging information with neighboring terminals. Comparing with the traditional air balancing methods, the proposed DTFC-AB method has the following advantages. 1.) Abstract:A data-driven energy-saving control strategy applied to balance the multi-zone demand controlled ventilation system is presented. The proposed strategy consists of two steps: system model construction and air balancing control. Based on observed datasets, a multi-layer perceptron structure is employed to model the multi-zone ventilation system. The model is used to predict the pressure differences of each damper based on the static pressure of the main duct and the desired airflow rates of each damper. Air balancing control approach is implemented based on the empirical formula of the damper. This approach is use to predict the operating positions of each damper based on the predicted pressure differences of the developed model. An experimental apparatus consisting of original components of ventilation system is set up to collect the training and testing data, and simultaneously used to validate the performance of the proposed control strategy. Experimental results demonstrate that the issue of over-ventilation and under-ventilation of demand controlled ventilation system is eliminated, and energy savings of fan power can be obtained with the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:For addressing the energy waste resulted by over-ventilation or under-ventilation in conventional demand-controlled ventilation system, an air balancing strategy is proposed to solve the over-ventilation and under-ventilation problems of the multi-zone demand-controlled ventilation system. In this study, an energy-saving oriented mathematical model is constructed to simulate the non-linear behavior of the multi-zone ventilation system and Bayesian linear regression supervised machine learning algorithm is used to estimate the unknown parameters of the constructed model. On the basis of the developed model, the damper control method is established to determine the position of the damper according to the desired airflow rate to ensure the system well-balanced. Therefore, with the constructed system model and the damper control method, the system can be well-balanced to overcome the disadvantages of over-ventilation and under-ventilation, and consumes less energy compared to the system that are not balanced. The performance of the proposed air balancing strategy for demand-controlled ventilation system is practically tested in an experimental rig with five terminals and validated by comparing to the demand-controlled ventilation strategy without air balancing. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed strategy achieved the desired airflow rate within 4.6% maximum absolute percentage error, and also achieved a maximum value 14.3% for fan power reduction compared to conventional the strategy without air balancing.

Abstract:In this paper the non-isothermal ventilation of VAV system is studied by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. A new zero equation model (Chen et al) of turbulent flow is introduced to simulate the nonisothermal airflow accompanied with a validated sample. With the validated CFD model, the indoor airflow and temperature distribution in a full-scale room in high rise building are numerically solved. They are also compared with the conventional jet theory method. Thus advantages and disadvantages between the two methods are given.

Abstract:A quasi-three-dimensional model was developed to simulate earth-to-air heat exchange process in underground duct system(UDS),which ignores heat transfer in the earth in the direction of air flow.The results of the mathematical model have been compared with the measured data,and a high level of agreement was obtained.Furthermore,the model was applied to analyze the effect of different parameters on the cooling/heating capability,including length,depth and air velocity.The depth should be 3～4 meters while the air speed should not be too high was proposed applying in Beijing.

Abstract:The aircraft air-conditioning system, which consumes the engine bleed air to provide stable and comfort environment for passengers, has a high demand of system reliability and energy efficiency. For analyzing system performance and control effect under a wide range of operating scenarios, this paper presents a dynamic model of the aircraft air-conditioning system. A pressure-node based method is proposed to decouple the system architecture, and a modelling framework is established with reflecting the interdependencies between component-level modules. Dynamic sub-models including pressure nodes, heat exchangers and the air cycle machine are built to predict all major dynamics in the system. The model is verified by the measured data of an airborne testing. The predicted temperatures show good agreement with the measured data, of which the average deviations at the compressor outlet and system outlet are 4.60 °C and 3.49 °C, respectively. The effectivity of the proposed model is investigated under various conditions, including different control signal inputs, standard pull up/pull down conditions and an entire flight case. The simulation results indicate that the model can be successfully applied for a wide range of aircraft operating scenarios, and provide insight towards control design and fault detection of the aircraft air-conditioning system.
