Abstract:Nanomaterials are considered to be materials whose design construction requires at least one of their dimensions to be comprising of components that are sized within 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanosize can endow nanomaterials with new functions such as new physical, chemical and optical properties that their larger counterparts do not possess. These properties of nanoparticles have thus, become a subject of huge interest as research in them have flourished in the past decades and revealed myriads of new applications that can make this technology indispensable in our lives and in future research. Their various different physical and chemical properties, and their application in some of the most advanced technology-based research of the current decades have been discussed in this research. And also, this research will allow future researchers to exploit the existing gaps in knowledge and research to advance the field further and design newer different applications for the nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanobiotechnology is converged by nanotechnology and biotechnology, and is a major component of nanotechnology. It is also an important research topic in the area of biomedicine. The nanoparticle is the most interested and useful nanomaterial used in the biomedical field, which have many characteristics. This article introduced some new reserach achievements and progress in the biosensor and biodetection field based on the nanoparticle technology, presented the synthesis methods for nanoparticle, the application of nanoparticle in the nanobiosensor and nanobiochip, and some related research work carried out in our lab. Finally, the development of this field in the future was prospected.

Abstract:Nanomaterial technology is a comprehensive subject with strong intersections, and its related research content involves a wide range of modern scientific and technological fields. The science and technology in the area of nanomaterials has attracted the attention of many research groups over the past few years. By its very nature, this topic has a lot of room for research, related to very tiny objects in the nanometer range. Nanomaterials refer to the sudden changes in the properties of substances when they reach the nanometer scale, resulting in special properties. In this paper, we introduce various nanomaterials commonly used in the field of biosensing, and briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of nanoscale biosensors. At the same time, we also explain the working principles of various types of biosensors based on nanomaterial technology, including electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, and piezoelectric biosensors. In addition, we also introduce the sensing targets of common biosensors, such as enzymes, DNA, microorganisms, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for the application of nanomaterials technology in biosensing, and analyze the current trends and future directions.

Abstract:Nanomaterials are well known to possess excellent electrical, optical, thermal, catalytic properties and strong mechanical strength, which offer great opportunities to construct nanomaterials-based sensors or devices for monitoring environmental contaminations in air, water and soil. Various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, gold nanoparticles, silicon nanowires and quantum dots, have been extensively explored in detecting and measuring toxic metal ions, toxic gases, pesticides, and hazardous industrial chemicals with high sensitivity, selectivity and simplicity. In the feature article, we reviewed recent advances in this direction, by classifying nanomaterials into five categories to illustrate the applications of nanomaterials in environmental monitoring.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of science and technology, the application of nanomaterials in the field of biosensors is becoming increasingly widespread. Nanobiosensors are widely used due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, small size, and low cost, finding applications in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, biotechnology, and industrial automation, among others. This paper primarily discusses the research progress of biosensors based on nanomaterials and their applications in biological detection and medical diagnosis. It introduces the working principles of nanomaterial-based biosensors, provides practical application cases of nanomaterial biosensors in various fields, such as protein detection, DNA detection and pathogen detection. And this paper also looks forward to the prospects, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of nanomaterial-based biosensors. With the deepening of nanomaterial research and the continuous innovation of technology, biosensors based on nanomaterials are expected to play an increasingly important role in biological detection, medical diagnosis, and biomedical research. Simultaneously, they also hold the potential for widespread application in clinical diagnosis, biosecurity, and environmental protection.

Abstract:In the last few decades, numerous strategies and technologies for the quantification in different matrices have been proposed because of their importance for the global environment and public health. One of the specific areas for scientific nanomaterial research today is the advancement of novel sensors with interest in the food sector. Among them, sensors based on nanomaterials have attracted increasing attention and allow researchers to explore new principles to improve analytical performance. The functionalized nanomaterials are used as catalytic technologies, platforms for immobilization, or optical or electroactive labels to enhance the productivity of bio-sensing with better accuracy, reliability, and selectiveness. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocomposite, and nanostructured materials play a crucial role in designing sensors and biosensing systems that are interested in food analysis applications. Besides, these nanobiosystems also offer benefits when designing novel food detection strategies. The sensing capability of sensor systems is enhanced by the use of nanomaterials such as magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanotubes, quantum dots, nanowires, nanochannels, etc. These nanomaterials display high load transfer capacity, making them ideal for lower detection limits and higher sensitivity values, which contribute to improving the efficiency of biosensors as a label or modifier transducer. The number of food products intended to protect against harm to microorganisms and impurities is increasing. In order to achieve these objectives, it is vital to establish super-precise, reliable, advanced, fast, and cost-effective sensing techniques such as electrochemical sensors/biosensors. Although different forms of electrochemical sensing methods based on nanomaterials have been introduced on the market, the reliability of commercial products is still insufficient to meet the practical objective. This chapter focuses on trends in the technology of nanobiosensors and nanomaterials used in biosensing devices. Finally, the application of biosensor-based nanomaterials in this field of research is being discussed.

Abstract:Nanomaterials (NMs) exhibit unique properties that render them highly suitable for developing sensitive and selective nanosensors across various domains. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of nanomaterial-based nanosensors, highlighting their applications and the classification of frequently employed NMs to enhance sensitivity and selectivity. The review introduces various classifications of NMs commonly used in nanosensors, such as carbon-based NMs, metal-based NMs, and others, elucidating their exceptional properties, including high thermal and electrical conductivity, large surface area-to-volume ratio and good biocompatibility. A thorough examination of literature sources was conducted to gather information on NMs-based nanosensors' characteristics, properties, and fabrication methods and their application in diverse sectors such as healthcare, environmental monitoring, industrial processes, and security. Additionally, advanced applications incorporating machine learning techniques were analyzed to enhance the sensor's performance. This review advances the understanding and development of nanosensor technologies by providing insights into fabrication techniques, characterization methods, applications, and future outlook. Key challenges such as robustness, biocompatibility, and scalable manufacturing are also discussed, offering avenues for future research and development in this field.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit great potentials in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, catalysis, energy, environmental science, and analytical science due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Usually, CNFs with flat, mesoporous, and porous surfaces can be synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and electrospinning techniques with subsequent chemical treatment. Meanwhile, the surfaces of CNFs are easy to modify with various materials to extend the applications of CNF-based hybrid nanomaterials in multiple fields. In this review, we focus on the design, synthesis, and sensor applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. The fabrication strategies of CNF-based functional nanomaterials by adding metallic nanoparticles (NPs), metal oxide NPs, alloy, silica, polymers, and others into CNFs are introduced and discussed. In addition, the sensor applications of CNF-based nanomaterials for detecting gas, strain, pressure, small molecule, and biomacromolecules are demonstrated in detail. This work will be beneficial for the readers to understand the strategies for fabricating various CNF-based nanomaterials, and explore new applications in energy, catalysis, and environmental science.

Abstract:Colorimetric sensors have been widely used to detect numerous analytes due to their cost-effectiveness, high sensitivity and specificity, and clear visibility, even with the naked eye. In recent years, the emergence of advanced nanomaterials has greatly improved the development of colorimetric sensors. This review focuses on the recent (from the years 2015 to 2022) advances in the design, fabrication, and applications of colorimetric sensors. First, the classification and sensing mechanisms of colorimetric sensors are briefly described, and the design of colorimetric sensors based on several typical nanomaterials, including graphene and its derivatives, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, DNA nanomaterials, quantum dots, and some other materials are discussed. Then the applications, especially for the detection of metallic and non-metallic ions, proteins, small molecules, gas, virus and bacteria, and DNA/RNA are summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and future trends in the development of colorimetric sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:Flexible electronic sensors have widespread applications in both traditional and emerging fields, particularly for human-computer interaction (electronic skins, wearable electronic devices) and physical and environmental monitoring for people. Flexible electronic sensors can be bent and folded readily without interfering with their detecting performance. However, researchers still face many difficulties. For instance, traditional flexible materials (such as organic materials) are less sensitive to external signals, and the production progress of flexible sensors is complicated. This review recapitulates applications of nanomaterials in flexible electronic sensors. Firstly, the working principles and applications of three common types of flexible electronic sensors, the piezoresistive sensor, the capacitive sensor, and the piezoelectric sensor, are introduced. Then, the paper summarizes methods for improving sensors performance in health monitoring, disease diagnosis and biological detection by application of different nanomaterials to flexible substrates. Finally, the future development of flexible nanomaterial sensors prospects. It is found that nanocomposites of metal nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials and other polymers with unique tuned photoelectrical properties show enhanced performance as flexible sensors and further research is needed to improve the material-substrate integration to promote the large-scale application as wearable sensors.

Abstract:As the technology revolution and industrialization have flourished in the last few decades, the development of humidity nanosensors has become more important for the detection and control of humidity in the industry production line, food preservation, chemistry, agriculture and environmental monitoring. The new nanostructured materials and fabrication in nanosensors are linked to better sensor performance, especially for superior humidity sensing, following the intensive research into the design and synthesis of nanomaterials in the last few years. Various nanomaterials, such as ceramics, polymers, semiconductor and sulfide, carbon-based, triboelectrical nanogenerator (TENG), and MXene, have been studied for their potential ability to sense humidity with structures of nanowires, nanotubes, nanopores, and monolayers. These nanosensors have been synthesized via a wide range of processes, including solution synthesis, anodization, physical vapor deposition (PVD), or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The sensing mechanism, process improvement and nanostructure modulation of different types of materials are mostly inexhaustible, but they are all inseparable from the goals of the effective response, high sensitivity and low response–recovery time of humidity sensors. In this review, we focus on the sensing mechanism of direct and indirect sensing, various fabrication methods, nanomaterial geometry and recent advances in humidity nanosensors. Various types of capacitive, resistive and optical humidity nanosensors are introduced, alongside illustration of the properties and nanostructures of various materials. The similarities and differences of the humidity-sensitive mechanisms of different types of materials are summarized. Applications such as IoT, and the environmental and human-body monitoring of nanosensors are the development trends for futures advancements.

Single-Atom Nanomaterials in Electrochemical Sensors Applications

Abstract:In recent years, the development of highly sensitive sensors has become a popular research topic. Some functional nanomaterials occupy an important position in the sensing field by virtue of their unique structures and catalytic properties, but there are still problems such as low sensitivity and poor specificity. Single-atom nanomaterials (SANs) show significant advantages in amplifying sensing signals and improving sensor interference resistance due to their high atomic utilization, structural simplicity, and homogeneity. They are expected to achieve high sensitivity and high specificity monitoring by modulating the active sites. In this review, the recent progress on SANs for electrochemical sensing applications was summarized. We first briefly summarize the features and advantages of single-atom catalysts. Then recent advances in the regulation of reaction sites in noble and non-noble metal-based SANs, including the introduction of defects in the carrier, other metal atoms, and ligand atoms, were highlighted. After that, the SANs for the construction of electrochemical, electrochemiluminescent (ECL), and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors and their applications in biochemical and environmental analysis were demonstrated. Finally, the future research aspect of SANs-based electrochemical sensing and the challenges of the SANs design and structure-properties revelation were illustrated, giving guidance on sensitive and accurate biosensing toward clinic diagnostic and environmental analysis.

Abstract:Various diseases caused by harmful microorganisms and viruses have caused serious harm and huge economic losses to society. Thus, rapid detection of harmful microorganisms and viruses is necessary for disease prevention and treatment. Nanomaterials have unique properties that other materials do not possess, such as small size effect and quantum size effect. Introducing nanomaterials into biosensors improves the performance of biosensors for faster and more accurate detection of microorganisms and viruses. This review aims to introduce the different kinds of biosensors and the latest advances in the application of nanomaterials in biosensors. In particular, this review focuses on describing the physicochemical properties of zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional nanostructures as well as nanoenzymes. Finally, this review discusses the applications of nanobiosensors in the detection of microorganisms and viruses and the future directions of nanobiosensors.

Abstract:Biosensors, combining informatics and biotechnology, as an interdisciplinary frontier related to chemistry, biology, physics and electronics, will have broad applications in clinical medicine, food inspection and environment protection. Among them, electrochemical biosensors have been extensively studied and applied, due to the high selectivity, high sensitivity, fast responses and advantages in miniaturization and online detection. A key factor in biosensor development is the immobilization of biomolecules. The progress in nanotechnology brought infinite imaginations and great potentials. Recently, nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanoporous materials and mesoporous materials have been increasingly employed to immobilize biocomponents, retaining their bioactivities and meanwhile promoting the effective electron-transfer. This paper reviews the proceedings during the last ten years of nanomaterials with different structures applied in electrochemical biosensors.
