Abstract:Carbon nanotube is a kind of novel nano-material. The properties of novel carbon nanotubes modified electrodes permit an important decrease in the overvoltage for the redox of chemicals and a dramatic improvement in the reversibility of the redox behavior of biomolecules. The high surface area possessing abundant acidic sites is propitious to the immobilization of enzyme and promote electron transfer between redox center of enzyme and electrode surface, which will improve the sensitivity and stability of biosensor.

Abstract:Biosensors, combining informatics and biotechnology, as an interdisciplinary frontier related to chemistry, biology, physics and electronics, will have broad applications in clinical medicine, food inspection and environment protection. Among them, electrochemical biosensors have been extensively studied and applied, due to the high selectivity, high sensitivity, fast responses and advantages in miniaturization and online detection. A key factor in biosensor development is the immobilization of biomolecules. The progress in nanotechnology brought infinite imaginations and great potentials. Recently, nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanoporous materials and mesoporous materials have been increasingly employed to immobilize biocomponents, retaining their bioactivities and meanwhile promoting the effective electron-transfer. This paper reviews the proceedings during the last ten years of nanomaterials with different structures applied in electrochemical biosensors.

Abstract:Nanobiotechnology is converged by nanotechnology and biotechnology, and is a major component of nanotechnology. It is also an important research topic in the area of biomedicine. The nanoparticle is the most interested and useful nanomaterial used in the biomedical field, which have many characteristics. This article introduced some new reserach achievements and progress in the biosensor and biodetection field based on the nanoparticle technology, presented the synthesis methods for nanoparticle, the application of nanoparticle in the nanobiosensor and nanobiochip, and some related research work carried out in our lab. Finally, the development of this field in the future was prospected.

Abstract:Nanomaterial technology is a comprehensive subject with strong intersections, and its related research content involves a wide range of modern scientific and technological fields. The science and technology in the area of nanomaterials has attracted the attention of many research groups over the past few years. By its very nature, this topic has a lot of room for research, related to very tiny objects in the nanometer range. Nanomaterials refer to the sudden changes in the properties of substances when they reach the nanometer scale, resulting in special properties. In this paper, we introduce various nanomaterials commonly used in the field of biosensing, and briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of nanoscale biosensors. At the same time, we also explain the working principles of various types of biosensors based on nanomaterial technology, including electrochemical biosensors, optical biosensors, and piezoelectric biosensors. In addition, we also introduce the sensing targets of common biosensors, such as enzymes, DNA, microorganisms, etc. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects for the application of nanomaterials technology in biosensing, and analyze the current trends and future directions.

Abstract:Abstract Background The electrochemical biosensor is one of the typical sensing devices based on transducing the biochemical events to electrical signals. In this type of sensor, an electrode is a key component that is employed as a solid support for immobilization of biomolecules and electron movement. Thanks to numerous nanomaterials that possess the large surface area, synergic effects are enabled by improving loading capacity and the mass transport of reactants for achieving high performance in terms of analytical sensitivity. Main body We categorized the current electrochemical biosensors into two groups, carbon-based (carbon nanotubes and graphene) and non-carbon-based nanomaterials (metallic and silica nanoparticles, nanowire, and indium tin oxide, organic materials). The carbon allotropes can be employed as an electrode and supporting scaffolds due to their large active surface area as well as an effective electron transfer rate. We also discussed the non-carbon nanomaterials that are used as alternative supporting components of the electrode for improving the electrochemical properties of biosensors. Conclusion Although several functional nanomaterials have provided the innovative solid substrate for high performances, developing on-site version of biosensor that meets enough sensitivity along with high reproducibility still remains a challenge. In particular, the matrix interference from real samples which seriously affects the biomolecular interaction still remains the most critical issues that need to be solved for practical aspect in the electrochemical biosensor.

Abstract:With the continuous advancement of science and technology, the application of nanomaterials in the field of biosensors is becoming increasingly widespread. Nanobiosensors are widely used due to their high sensitivity, selectivity, small size, and low cost, finding applications in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, biotechnology, and industrial automation, among others. This paper primarily discusses the research progress of biosensors based on nanomaterials and their applications in biological detection and medical diagnosis. It introduces the working principles of nanomaterial-based biosensors, provides practical application cases of nanomaterial biosensors in various fields, such as protein detection, DNA detection and pathogen detection. And this paper also looks forward to the prospects, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of nanomaterial-based biosensors. With the deepening of nanomaterial research and the continuous innovation of technology, biosensors based on nanomaterials are expected to play an increasingly important role in biological detection, medical diagnosis, and biomedical research. Simultaneously, they also hold the potential for widespread application in clinical diagnosis, biosecurity, and environmental protection.

Abstract:Nanozymes are nanomaterials with enzyme-like catalytic activities. The unique features of nanozymes (such as high stability, low cost, large surface area for bioconjugation, ease of storage, and multi-functionalities) offer unprecedented opportunities for designing electrochemical biosensors. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors. To highlight these achievements, this review first discusses the representative nanozymes including peroxidase mimics, oxidase mimics, hydrolase mimics, and superoxide dismutase mimics used in electrochemical biosensors. Then, it summarizes the bioanalytical applications for the detection of various analytes. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are summarized.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of highly sensitive sensors has become a popular research topic. Some functional nanomaterials occupy an important position in the sensing field by virtue of their unique structures and catalytic properties, but there are still problems such as low sensitivity and poor specificity. Single-atom nanomaterials (SANs) show significant advantages in amplifying sensing signals and improving sensor interference resistance due to their high atomic utilization, structural simplicity, and homogeneity. They are expected to achieve high sensitivity and high specificity monitoring by modulating the active sites. In this review, the recent progress on SANs for electrochemical sensing applications was summarized. We first briefly summarize the features and advantages of single-atom catalysts. Then recent advances in the regulation of reaction sites in noble and non-noble metal-based SANs, including the introduction of defects in the carrier, other metal atoms, and ligand atoms, were highlighted. After that, the SANs for the construction of electrochemical, electrochemiluminescent (ECL), and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors and their applications in biochemical and environmental analysis were demonstrated. Finally, the future research aspect of SANs-based electrochemical sensing and the challenges of the SANs design and structure-properties revelation were illustrated, giving guidance on sensitive and accurate biosensing toward clinic diagnostic and environmental analysis.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles are the most extensively studied nanomaterials for biomedical application due to their unique properties, such as rapid and simple synthesis, large surface area, strong adsorption ability and facile conjugation to various biomolecules. The remarkable photophysical properties of gold nanoparticles have provided plenty of opportunities for the preparation of gold nanoparticles- based optical biosensors, while the excellent biocompatibility, conductivity, catalytic properties and large surface-to-volume ratio have facilitated the application of gold nanoparticles in the construction of electrochemical biosensors. In this review, we mainly detail the gold nanoparticles-based optical and electrochemical biosensors for biomedical application in the recent two years, which have exhibited greatly enhanced analytical performances in the detection of DNA, proteins and some important small molecules.

Abstract:The aim of this review is to gather current researches into sensors based on noble metal and semiconductor nanomaterials in biomedical detection and elucidate the basic principle and applications of different sorts of semiconductor nanomaterials, i.e., metal oxide NPs, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic metal oxide (MMO) NPs. Abstract:The general mechanism of chemical sensing is based on molecular recognition linked to different transduction strategies based on electrochemical, optical, gravimetric or thermal effects that can convert the signal to digital information. Electrochemical sensors support accurate, fast, and inexpensive analytical methods with the advantages of being easily embedded and integrated into electronics, and having the greatest potential impact in the areas of healthcare, environmental monitoring (e.g. electronic noses), food packaging and many other applications (E. Bakker and Y. Qin, Anal. Chem., 2006, 78, 3965). Nanoscale electrochemical biosensors offer a new scope and opportunity in analytical chemistry. The reduction in the size of electrochemical biosensors to nanoscale dimensions expands their analytical capability, allowing the exploration of nanoscopic domains, measurements of local concentration profiles, detection in microfluidic systems and in vivo monitoring of neurochemical events by detection of stimulated dopamine release (R. Kennedy, L. Huang, M. Atkinson and P. Dush, Anal. Chem., 1993, 65, 1882). This article reviews both state of art developments in electrochemical nanosensing, and the industrial outlook.

Abstract:With recent advances in nanotechnology, great progress has been made in biosensors based on nanomaterials, but there are still numerous challenges to overcome. We describe nanomaterial-based biosensors for researchers new to the field, paying particular attention to metal nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT)-based label-free approaches. Label-free monitoring of biorecognition events provides a promising platform, which is simple, cost-effective, and requires no external modification to biomolecules. Using examples from recent reports, we illustrate the diversity of biological recognition events and the range of experimental techniques employed for metal-nanoparticle-based and label-free characterization.

Abstract:Due to the interesting physicochemical and biological properties of carbon-based nanomaterials and their large number of derivatives, these nanomaterials are going to be the best and first choice of scientists and industries. One of the attractive research area in which carbon-based nanomaterials have many applications, is the science of detection and measurement called biosensors. Some special properties like large surface-to-volume ratio, high electrical conductivity, chemical stability, strong mechanical strength, easy functionalization, biocompatibility, and biodegradability make these nanomaterials suitable to employ in biosensors transducers for improving signal processing. Recently, these biosensors have been used widely in the monitoring of disease progression, environmental pollution detection and measurement, food control, and drug discovery. Considering these substantial properties, using the carbon-based nanomaterials led to higher sensitivity with the lower limit of detection, wide linear range detection, and reusable sensors than conventional ones. This review is an overview of the most recent progress in the development of biosensors based on wide variety of carbon nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, diamond, fullerene, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanohorns, nanoporous carbon, nano carbon black and their composites. In addition to the structure of the biosensor, an attempt has been made to discuss the multiple analytes such as glucose, antibody, dopamine, proteins, nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), and drugs which detected and measured by these biosensors.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have become one of the most interesting sensing materials because of their unique size- and shape-dependent optical properties, high surface energy and surface-to-volume ratio, and tunable surface properties. Aptamers are oligonucleotides that can bind their target ligands with high affinity. The use of nanomaterials that are bioconjugated with aptamers for selective and sensitive detection of analytes such as small molecules, metal ions, proteins, and cells has been demonstrated. This review focuses on recent progress in the development of biosensors by integrating functional aptamers with different types of nanomaterials, including quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), metallic NPs, and carbon nanotubes. Colorimetry, fluorescence, electrochemistry, surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and magnetic resonance imaging are common detection modes for a broad range of analytes with high sensitivity and selectivity when using aptamer bioconjugated nanomaterials (Apt-NMs). We highlight the important roles that the size and concentration of nanomaterials, the secondary structure and density of aptamers, and the multivalent interactions play in determining the specificity and sensitivity of the nanosensors towards analytes. Advantages and disadvantages of the Apt-NMs for bioapplications are focused.

Abstract:In the last few decades, numerous strategies and technologies for the quantification in different matrices have been proposed because of their importance for the global environment and public health. One of the specific areas for scientific nanomaterial research today is the advancement of novel sensors with interest in the food sector. Among them, sensors based on nanomaterials have attracted increasing attention and allow researchers to explore new principles to improve analytical performance. The functionalized nanomaterials are used as catalytic technologies, platforms for immobilization, or optical or electroactive labels to enhance the productivity of bio-sensing with better accuracy, reliability, and selectiveness. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocomposite, and nanostructured materials play a crucial role in designing sensors and biosensing systems that are interested in food analysis applications. Besides, these nanobiosystems also offer benefits when designing novel food detection strategies. The sensing capability of sensor systems is enhanced by the use of nanomaterials such as magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanotubes, quantum dots, nanowires, nanochannels, etc. These nanomaterials display high load transfer capacity, making them ideal for lower detection limits and higher sensitivity values, which contribute to improving the efficiency of biosensors as a label or modifier transducer. The number of food products intended to protect against harm to microorganisms and impurities is increasing. In order to achieve these objectives, it is vital to establish super-precise, reliable, advanced, fast, and cost-effective sensing techniques such as electrochemical sensors/biosensors. Although different forms of electrochemical sensing methods based on nanomaterials have been introduced on the market, the reliability of commercial products is still insufficient to meet the practical objective. This chapter focuses on trends in the technology of nanobiosensors and nanomaterials used in biosensing devices. Finally, the application of biosensor-based nanomaterials in this field of research is being discussed.
