Abstract:The first decade of the 21st century has been labeled as “the sensing decade”. The functional nanomaterials offer excellent platforms for fabrication of sensitive biosensing devices, including optical and electronic biosensors. A lot of works have focused on the biofunctionalization of different nanomaterials, such as metal nanoparticles, semiconductor nanoparticles and carbon nanostructures, by physical adsorption, electrostatic binding, specific recognition or covalent coupling. These biofunctionalized nanomaterials can be used as catalysts, electronic conductors, optical emitters, carriers or tracers to obtain the amplified detection signal and the stabilized recognition probes or biosensing interface. The designed signal amplification strategies have greatly promoted the development of stable, specific, selective and sensitive biosensors in different fields. This review introduces some novel principles and detection strategies in the area of biosensing, based on functional nanomaterials. The general methods for biofunctionalization of nanomaterials with biomolecules and their biosensing application in immunoassay of protein, DNA detection, carbohydrate analysis and cytosensing are also described.

Abstract:Recent developments in integrating high selectivity of functional DNA, such as DNAzymes and aptamers, with efficient DNA delivery into cells by gold nanoparticles or superior near-infrared optical properties of upconversion nanoparticles are reviewed. Their applications in sensing and imaging small organic metabolites, toxins, metal ions, pH, DNA, RNA, proteins, and pathogens are summarized. The advantages and future directions of these functional DNA materials are discussed.

Abstract:The introduction of functional nanomaterials into biosensing fields advanced analytical chemistry and opened a series of concepts for design of new analytical and tracing tools. It not only improved the stability and biocompatibility of biosensing interfaces, also has greatly enhanced the biosensing response to recognition event, thus met the need for detection of trace amounts of a wide variety of analytes and acquisition of ultraweak biological signals, and promoted the development of life science, biomedicine, food and environmental science. Different nanomaterials have been functionalized to modify the biosensing interfaces for accelerating the electron transfer, lowing the activation energy, and/or concentrating the target analytes, or to act as nanoprobes for labeling the recognition molecules, in which the nanomaterials can act as catalysts, enzyme mimics, signal emitters or carriers for loading of signal molecules to produce amplified signals. By coupling with the specificity of biological recognition events, the functional nanomaterials and nanoprobes have been quickly developed for highly sensitive and specific biosensing both in vitro and in vivo. This review focuses on the significant advances in use of functional nanomaterials for design of amplified biosensing strategies. Abstract:Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit great potentials in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, catalysis, energy, environmental science, and analytical science due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Usually, CNFs with flat, mesoporous, and porous surfaces can be synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and electrospinning techniques with subsequent chemical treatment. Meanwhile, the surfaces of CNFs are easy to modify with various materials to extend the applications of CNF-based hybrid nanomaterials in multiple fields. In this review, we focus on the design, synthesis, and sensor applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. The fabrication strategies of CNF-based functional nanomaterials by adding metallic nanoparticles (NPs), metal oxide NPs, alloy, silica, polymers, and others into CNFs are introduced and discussed. In addition, the sensor applications of CNF-based nanomaterials for detecting gas, strain, pressure, small molecule, and biomacromolecules are demonstrated in detail. This work will be beneficial for the readers to understand the strategies for fabricating various CNF-based nanomaterials, and explore new applications in energy, catalysis, and environmental science.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have become one of the most interesting sensing materials because of their unique size- and shape-dependent optical properties, high surface energy and surface-to-volume ratio, and tunable surface properties. Aptamers are oligonucleotides that can bind their target ligands with high affinity. The use of nanomaterials that are bioconjugated with aptamers for selective and sensitive detection of analytes such as small molecules, metal ions, proteins, and cells has been demonstrated. This review focuses on recent progress in the development of biosensors by integrating functional aptamers with different types of nanomaterials, including quantum dots, magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), metallic NPs, and carbon nanotubes. Colorimetry, fluorescence, electrochemistry, surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and magnetic resonance imaging are common detection modes for a broad range of analytes with high sensitivity and selectivity when using aptamer bioconjugated nanomaterials (Apt-NMs). We highlight the important roles that the size and concentration of nanomaterials, the secondary structure and density of aptamers, and the multivalent interactions play in determining the specificity and sensitivity of the nanosensors towards analytes. Advantages and disadvantages of the Apt-NMs for bioapplications are focused.

Abstract:Recent advances in nanomaterial design and synthesis has resulted in robust sensing systems that display superior analytical performance. The use of nanomaterials within sensors has accelerated new routes and opportunities for the detection of analytes or target molecules. Among others, carbon-based sensors have reported biocompatibility, better sensitivity, better selectivity and lower limits of detection to reveal a wide range of organic and inorganic molecules. Carbon nanomaterials are among the most extensively studied materials because of their unique properties spanning from the high specific surface area, high carrier mobility, high electrical conductivity, flexibility, and optical transparency fostering their use in sensing applications. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been made to cover recent developments in the field of carbon-based nanomaterials for sensing applications. The review describes nanomaterials like fullerenes, carbon onions, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. Synthesis of these nanostructures has been discussed along with their functionalization methods. The recent application of all these nanomaterials in sensing applications has been highlighted for the principal applicative field and the future prospects and possibilities have been outlined.

Abstract:Nanomaterials are considered to be materials whose design construction requires at least one of their dimensions to be comprising of components that are sized within 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanosize can endow nanomaterials with new functions such as new physical, chemical and optical properties that their larger counterparts do not possess. These properties of nanoparticles have thus, become a subject of huge interest as research in them have flourished in the past decades and revealed myriads of new applications that can make this technology indispensable in our lives and in future research. Their various different physical and chemical properties, and their application in some of the most advanced technology-based research of the current decades have been discussed in this research. And also, this research will allow future researchers to exploit the existing gaps in knowledge and research to advance the field further and design newer different applications for the nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-based technologies have played important roles in providing opportunities for the development of a new generation of sensing tools. Because of their unique optical, chemical, electrical, and catalytic properties, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been extensively studied for biological and chemical detections as well as analytical applications. AuNP-based sensors are expected to change the foundations of sensing and detecting biomolecules and metal ions. The ease of surface functionalization of AuNPs allows chemists to create the desired functionalities for specific applications. In this review, we will discuss the use of surface-functionalized AuNPs for fabricating smart sensors that are capable of detecting heavy metal ions, glucose, and specific biomolecules such as protein and DNA.

Abstract:A new sensor made of a sub-wavelength optical-fiber array is shown. On page 7462, Q. Gong, Y.-F. Xiao, and co-workers report that such a tiny optical device can detect and size single nanoscale particles, owing to its high sensitivity and real-time response ability. This simple and promising design may facilitate important applications, such as early-stage biomedical diagnostics, process control of semiconductor manufacturing, and explosives and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A sensor array is an artificial olfactory system based on the array analysis method. On an array, information from different sensing units could be collected simultaneously, which improves the analysis efficiency of the sensors. This high-throughput sensing mode has broad application prospect in the areas such as public safety, environmental monitoring and medical diagnosis. Among different kinds of sensor arrays, optical chemical sensor arrays have attracted much attention because of their high sensitivity and abundant output signal types. In recent years, for further improving the identification ability and sensitivity of the arrays, functional nanomaterials have been widely applied in optical chemical sensor arrays for increasing sensing materials and developing new sensing methods. The present review introduces the applications of functional nanomaterials in optical sensor arrays which can be classified into fluorescent arrays, colorimetric arrays, cataluminescence arrays and multidimensional arrays according to the type of spectroscopic detection technology.

Abstract:New possibilities for the development of biosensors that are ready to be implemented in the field have emerged thanks to the recent progress of functional nanomaterials and the careful engineering of nanostructures. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have exceptional physical, chemical, highly anisotropic, chemically active, and mechanical capabilities due to their ultra-thin structures. The diversity of the high surface area, layered topologies, and porosity found in 2D nanomaterials makes them amenable to being engineered with surface characteristics that make it possible for targeted identification. By integrating the distinctive features of several varieties of nanostructures and employing them as scaffolds for bimolecular assemblies, biosensing platforms with improved reliability, selectivity, and sensitivity for the identification of a plethora of analytes can be developed. In this review, we compile a number of approaches to using 2D nanomaterials for biomolecule detection. Subsequently, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of using 2D nanomaterials in biosensing. Finally, both the opportunities and the challenges that exist within this potentially fruitful subject are discussed. This review will assist readers in understanding the synthesis of 2D nanomaterials, their alteration by enzymes and composite materials, and the implementation of 2D material-based biosensors for efficient bioanalysis and disease diagnosis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have well exhibited superior chemical/physical properties, holding great promise for various applications including biosensing. Here we review recent advances in the use of 2D nanomaterials and their derivatives for developing biosensors, including electrochemical biosensors, field-effect transistor (FET) biosensors, photoelectrochemical biosensors, fluorescence biosensors, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensors, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors and colorimetric biosensors. We summarize various strategies for exploiting the unique properties of 2D nanomaterials for detecting biomolecules. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of 2D nanomaterials in biosensing applications.

Abstract:The unique properties of nanoscale materials (1–200 nm) offer excellent platforms for electronic or optical signal transduction and the design of a new generation of bioelectronic and biosensing devices. However, the drawbacks of nanoparticles (NPs) in biocompatibility and biological recognition ability limit their application in analytical chemistry. The biofunctionalization of nanomaterials can endow them with good biocompatibility for the immobilization of biomolecules, tissue, or cells and high specificity for biological recognition [1–6], which led to stable biosensing systems with good selectivity and reproducibility. Particularly, the biofunctional NPs can produce a synergic effect among catalytic activity, conductivity, and biocompatibility to accelerate signal transduction and achieve a rapid response to target with a very high sensitivity by signal amplification. The need for ultrasensitive bioassays and the trend toward miniaturized assays have made the biofunctionalization of nanomaterials one of the hottest fields. Therefore, seeking suitable methods for the functionalization of nanomaterials with biomolecules such as protein, DNA, small organic molecules, polymer films, and even entire living cells has attracted considerable attention.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent progress in the development of biosensors by integrating functional DNA molecules with different types of nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, semiconductor nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, and carbon nanotubes. On one hand, advances in nanoscale science and technology have generated nanomaterials with unique optical, electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties. On the other hand, recent progress in biology has resulted in functional DNAs, a new class of DNAs that can either bind to a target molecule (known as aptamers) or perform catalytic reactions (known as DNAzymes) with the ability to recognize a broad range of targets from metal ions to organic molecules, proteins and cells specifically. By taking advantage of the strengths in both fields, the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials have been modulated by the target recognition and catalytic activity of functional DNAs in the presence of a target analyte, resulting in a large number of colorimetric, fluorescent, electrochemical, surface-enhanced Raman scattering and magnetic resonance imaging sensors for the detection of a broad range of analytes with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Signal amplification based on biofunctional nanomaterials has recently attracted considerable attention due to the need for ultrasensitive bioassays and the trend towards miniaturized assays. The biofunctional nanomaterials can not only produce a synergic effect among catalytic activity, conductivity and biocompatibility to accelerate the signal transduction, but also provide amplified recognition events by high loading of signal tags, leading to a highly sensitive and specific biosensing. Most importantly, nanoscaled materials are in direct contact with the environment, which permits them to act as chemical and biological sensors in single-molecule detection of biomolecules. In this tutorial review, we will focus on recent significant advances in signal amplification strategies combining the cross-disciplines of chemistry, biology, and materials science, and highlight some elegant applications of biofunctional nanomaterials as excellent electronic or optical signal tags in ultrasensitive bioanalysis. The biofunctional nanomaterials-based biosensing opens a series of concepts for basic research and offers new tools for detection of trace amounts of a wide variety of analytes in clinical, environmental, and industrial applications.
