Abstract:This volume represents a collection of selected papers presented at a symposium of the same name sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry held at the national Spring meeting of the American Chemical Society in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 29 - April 1, 1982. Also included are invited papers from a number of outstanding overseas liquid crystal scientists who were unable to attend the symposium. The attendance at the symposium itself and the number of papers contained herein is reflective of the high level of current interest in (and maturity of) the field of liquid crystal research. Included in this volume are papers mainly derived from the fields of chemistry and physics ranging in content from the design and synthesis of new meso genic materials to theoretical physical treatments of anisotropic liquids. One of the significant aspects of current liquid crystal research is the increasing col laboration between chemist and phys.icist. The overlap of these two areas has been growing over the last several years and many contri butions to this volume involve a molecular approach to the chemical physics of liquid crystalline materials.

The effects of structure elements on the phase transition behaviors and the optoelectronic properties are particularly discussed. Abstract:My first encounter with the British Liquid Crystal Society (BLCS) annual meetings began with attending the conference in Norwich back in 2008. I was fascinated by the rich diversity of the subject liquid crystals and have taken every opportunity to attend the BLCS meetings thereafter. Liquid crystals are amongst rare scientific areas that bring under one roof researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from abstract topics of pure mathematics and state-of-the-art computer modelling to chemical synthesis, application of advanced physical techniques and engineering applications. Talking more generally, it would not be an exaggeration to state that liquid crystals are not just a subject of research in its own merit. Liquid crystals play much greater role in inspiring and stimulating the advances within many scientific disciplines. This is because of the intriguing complexity of the phenomena associated with liquid crystals with the promise for many potential practical applications. The BLCS meetings also offer an exciting opportunity for academics, PhD students and industrialists to meet and exchange ideas and discuss potential projects for collaboration which otherwise would not be possible. The 28th BLCS conference held this year in Durham was not an exception in all these respects. The meeting took place at the Calman Learning Centre on the University Science Site. It started with the registration in the foyer of the Centre followed by the lunch. Then Mark Wilson, the local conference organiser and the host, welcomed the delegates to the venue with the open remarks and brief housekeeping announcements. The first session kicked off with the plenary talk by Randall Kamien (University of Pennsylvania) on classification of topological defects in liquid crystals with particular emphasis on smectics with the broken translational symmetry. It was a mathematical by very engaging talk involving quite an interaction with the audience. It set up a good pace for the rest of the session. I have to admit that at the conference there were a good number of talks focusing on the singularities (defects) in liquid crystals. And the first session was concerned with the pleasures of mathematics, such as geometric topology and related topics, which allow one to explain and even predict topological phenomena in liquid crystals. The next speaker up was Timothy Atherton (Tufts University) who, after a brief crash course on differential geometry, reported on the computational modelling of defect textures on relaxing nematic shells. His work involves energy minimisation with simulated annealing to probe the phenomena such as annihilation of defect pairs. The last talk before the break was given by Doug Cleaver (Sheffield Hallam University) who talked about polar and azimuthal anchoring of nematics studied by molecular modelling. We learned how simulations could help to understand the alignment of the molecules in the films, how molecules interact with the surface and the elastic properties of the bulk. After the break, the next session was opened by Dave Walba (University of Colorado) with a talk about the formation of the helical nanofilament phase, a mysterious B4 phase. In B4 phase, bentcore molecules form a unique hierarchical assembly of stacked layers with the precise layer spacing, a material with the potential for application in solar energy conversion. Next, Ingo Dierking (University of Manchester) brought the attention of the audience to lyotropic liquid crystals and to their chiral SmC phase with polar switching. It is quite known that the tilted SmC analogue phases have hardly been seen in lyotropic liquid crystals and certainly not their chiral analogues. Ingo’s report was on the first observation of the lyotropic ferroelectric liquid crystal SmC* phase, a state that combines macroscopic chirality with polar electro-optic switching. Next speaker was Nicholas Kasch (also from the University of Manchester) who talked about a famous blue phase and how mixing with chain polymers affects its properties. Particular focus was on how this mixing improves the blue phase stability temperature range with potential implications to material science and photonics. The final speaker of day one was Rachel Hyman (University of Cambridge) with the talk about blue phase liquid crystals stabilised by polymers. Such materials can be employed as polarisation independent phase modulation devices with many potential applications in computer-generated holograms, optical correlators and tweezers. Abstract:The 8th Asian Symposium on Computational Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow (ASCHT2021), as a continuation of the series initiated in 2007, was held in Qingdao, China, from September 23rd to 26th, 2021. This conference has become an essential platform for exchanging new ideas and creating knowledge about the latest advances in theories, analyses, and applications of computational methods involving scientists and engineers from Asia and other regions. Of the 346 papers submitted to ASCHT2021, 277 papers were chosen for the proceedings. Subsequently, 20 of these papers were meticulously selected for publication in this Special issue after an extensive additional peer review process by renowned international experts. The selection for the Special Issue aimed to ensure the high quality of contributions anticipated to impact future research and development significantly. All papers presented in ASCHT2021 contributed high-quality content, fostering significant discussions among participants, which is expected to enhance the quality of future submissions for upcoming events.

Abstract:The organizing Committee of AICT 2023 was proud to present the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Communication Technology (AICT 2023), which was held on May 30-31, 2023 in Chongqing, China. The aim as well as objective of this AICT is to present the latest research and results of scientists related to Artificial Intelligence, Communication Technology and related topics. This conference provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas face-to-face, to establish business or research relations as well as to find global partners for future collaborations. We hope that the conference results will lead to significant contributions to the knowledge in these up-to-date scientific fields. All full paper submissions to the AICT 2023 must be written in English, and will be sent to 2-4 reviewers and evaluated based on originality, technical or research content, correctness, relevance to conference, contributions, and readability. The full paper submissions will be chosen based on technical merit, interest, applicability, and how well they fit a coherent and balanced technical program. This AICT conference has received 93 manuscripts. And less than 50 articles were accepted by our reviewers and the press. By submitting a paper to this AICT conference, the authors agree to the review process and understand that papers undergo a peer-review process. Manuscripts will be reviewed by appropriately qualified experts in the field selected by the Conference Committee, who will give detailed comments and-if the submission gets accepted-the authors submit a revised version that takes into account this feedback. All papers are reviewed using a double-blind review process: authors declare their names and affiliations in the manuscript for the reviewers to see, but reviewers do not know each other's identities, nor do the authors receive information about who has reviewed their manuscript. The Committees of this 2nd AICT invest great efforts in reviewing the papers submitted to the conference and organizing the sessions to enable the participants to gain maximum benefit. Hopefully, all participants and other interested readers benefit scientifically from the proceedings and also find it stimulating in the process. Abstract:Recently,progressively more fundamental and applied studies in liquid crystals have sought to apply this miraculous soft material to aspects other than the optics of planar displays.These up-and-coming non-display studies of liquid crystals range across the disciplines,from biology through to chemistry and physics,extending beyond even materiology and engineering.This summary primarily introduces the foundations,developments and potentials of several studies in non-display applications of liquid crystals in physics and related areas,including the progress on liquid crystal modulators in microwave and THz frequencies,developed recently by the Exeter research team.The aim is to provide a useful reference for scientists studying non-display aspects of liquid crystals.

Abstract:>The first Chinese Chemical Letters (CCL) Organic Chemistry Forum was held in Xiamen of Fujian in Jan. 2018, followed by the successful events in Zhengzhou of Henan in Dec. 2019 and Linzhi of Tibet in July 2021. The series of forums aim to build a high-level organic chemistry academic exchange platform for (Chinese) youthful organic chemists, fully showcase their latest frontier achievements, and enhance the international level of organic chemistry in China. At the same time, the convening of the series of forums has also played a positive role in promoting the development of China’s scientific journal publishing, accelerating the realization of the strategic goal of building a world-class journal.
