Abstract:Fully dense Y2Mo3O12/Al composites were prepared by squeeze-casting. Relatively mild conditions of 750 degrees C/20 min/50 MPa were used in order to avoid reaction of the components. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD and dilatometry were used to characterize the microstructures and morphologies of the composites. Zero thermal expansion was achieved in the temperature range where the thermal mismatch strain was zero. We show that the CTE mismatch of Al and Y2Mo3O12 results in compressive and tensile strains that distort the Y2Mo3O12 lattice. We establish a novel method to measure the negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials' CTE under strain by measuring the composites' CTE and calculating the thermal mismatch strain between the NTE ceramic and the metal matrix. The relationship between thermal strain and Raman shift is established and measured and the simulated results are in good agreement. We also find Y2Mo3O12 to have a positive CTE when the surface strain is >= 0.80 x 10(-2)%.

Abstract:The phonon instability and thermal equation of state of Mo are extensively investigated using density functional theory. The calculated phonon dispersion curves agree well with experiments. Under compression, we captured a large softening in the transverse acoustic (TA) branches of body-centred cubic Mo. When the pressure is raised to 716 GPa, the frequencies along Gamma-N in the TA branches soften to imaginary frequencies, indicating structural instability. For face-centred cubic Mo, the phonon calculations predicted the stability by promoting the frequencies from imaginary to real. Within quasi-harmonic approximation, we predicted the thermal equation of state and some other properties including the thermal expansion coefficient alpha, product alpha K-T, heat capacity C-V, entropy S, Gruneisen parameter gamma and Debye temperature Theta(D). The melting curves of Mo were also obtained successfully.

Abstract:With an increasing temperature gradient, the internal stress in composites can cause many problems, such as the plastic yield of the matrix, fracture of the reinforcements, growth of pores in the matrix, and debonding of the interface. The reinforcement particularly affects the internal stress, considerably changing the various properties of the composites. ZrMgMo 3 O 12particle (p) /2024Al composites were fabricated using 5−30 vol. % of a near-zero expansion material, ZrMgMo 3 O 12 , as a reinforcement. This was achieved via high-energy milling followed by vacuum hot pressing. The influence of the ZrMgMo 3 O 12 content on the thermal expansion and dimensional stability of the composites was investigated. The results indicated that the large thermal mismatch stress between ZrMgMo 3 O 12 and 2024Al limited the addition of ZrMgMo 3 O 12 to the composites. The composites with 30 vol. % ZrMgMo 3 O 12 failed after solid solution treatment during water quenching. With increasing ZrMgMo 3 O 12 content from 5 to 20%, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) first decreased and then increased, whereas the dimensional stability of the composites first increased and then decreased. The composites with 10% ZrMgMo 3 O 12 had the lowest CTE of 11.3 × 10 –6 °C −1 from − 100 °C to 400 °C, and exhibited dimensional stability from room temperature (RT) to 400 °C.

Abstract:Effects of Y2W3O12 particle inclusions and content on damping capacity of Al–12Si composites have been investigated. The Y2W3O12, which is a kind of negative thermal expansion material, can generate high local strain in the composites. Thermal expansion testing shows that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of Y2W3O12 has obvious changes between 100 and 200 °C The Y2W3O12/Al–12Si composites show damping peaks and display higher damping capacities than the pure Al–12Si alloy. The damping capacities of composites strongly depends on the content of Y2W3O12 inclusions. A thermal strain damping model is also established. Based on the model analysis results, there is a significant contribution of thermal strain to the damping capacity in the composites; the change in CTE of Y2W3O12 could cause the generation of damping peaks. Moreover, dislocation damping and interfacial damping are also main damping mechanisms in the investigated composites.

Abstract:The Mo alloys reinforced by Al2O3 particles were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis and powder metallurgy. The microstructures of Mo−Al2O3 alloys were studied by using XRD, SEM and TEM. The results show that Al2O3 particles, existing as a stable hexagonal phase (α-Al2O3), are uniformly dispersed in Mo matrix. The ultrafine α-Al2O3 particles remarkably refine grain size and increase dislocation density of Mo alloys. Moreover, a good interfacial bonding zone between α-Al2O3 and Mo grain is obtained. The crystallographic orientations of the interface of the Al2O3 particles and Mo matrix are [ 1 ¯ 11 ] α - Al 2 O 3 / / [ 1 ¯ 11 ] Mo and [ 1 1 ¯ 2 ] α - Al 2 O 3 / / [ 0 1 ¯ 1 ] Mo . Due to the effect of secondary- phase and dislocation strengthening, the yield strength of Mo−2.0vol.%Al2O3 alloy annealed at 1200 °C is approximately 56.0% higher than that of pure Mo. The results confirm that the addition of Al2O3 particles is a promising method to improve the mechanical properties of Mo alloys.

Abstract:The crystal structure and thermal expansion properties of solid solutions Sc2-xAlxMo3O12(x = 0.0-2.0) are systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction. Rietveld refinement results indicate that samples with x <= 1.3 crystallize in a sc(2)Mo(3)O(12)-type orthorhombic (Pnca) structure, whereas others have an Al2Mo3O12-type monoclinic (P2(1)/a) structure. Substitution of 15% Al3+ for Sc3+ leads to a rapid change in linear thermal expansion coefficient from -2.334 x 10(-6) degrees C-1 to 0.732 x 10(-6) degrees C-1. The thermal expansion coefficients of Sc2-xAlxMo3O12 monotonously increase with increased Al3+ content. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Y2O3 dispersion-strengthened Molybdenum (Mo) composites were prepared by the mechanical alloying of Mo and Y powders then consolidation by spark plasma sintering. The effects of Chromium (Cr) addition (0 wt. %, 5 wt. %, 10 wt. % and 15 wt. %, respectively) on the mechanical performance and high-temperature oxidation resistance of Mo-Y2O3 were investigated. The introduction of Cr had a significant influence on the mechanical property and oxidation resistance of the Mo-Y2O3 composite. The highest bending strength reached 932 MPa when the addition of Cr content was 5 wt. % (Mo–5Cr–1Y sample). This improvement is likely attributable to the dual mechanism of grain refinement and solid solution strengthening. Moreover, the Mo–5Cr–1Y sample showed the thinnest oxide layer thickness after high-temperature oxidation tests, and exhibited the best oxidation resistance performance compared with the other samples. First principle calculation reveals that Cr could improve the Mo–MoO3 interface bonding to prevent rapid spalling of the oxide layer. Meanwhile, Cr also facilitates the formation of the dense Cr2(MoO4)3 layer on the surface, which can inhibit further oxidation.

Abstract:The hot compression tests for Mo–3 vol.%Al2O3 alloys were conducted on a Gleeble-1500D thermo-mechanical simulator in the temperatures range of 1000–1300 °C and strain rates range of 0.005–1 s−1. The hot deformation behavior, mechanism associated with microstructure evolution of Mo–3 vol.%Al2O3 alloys was investigated by electron backscattering diffraction analysis. Three types of stress–strain curves were analyzed by quantifying the work hardening rate. The deformation mechanism at 1000–1300 °C mainly included the plastic deformation of Mo–3 vol.%Al2O3 alloy, as well as the dynamic recovery and recrystallization of Mo matrix. The modified Arrhenius, Modified Johnson–Cook and modified Zerilli–Armstrong constitutive equations were established and evaluated by the correlation coefficient (Rc) and average absolute relative error (\({\bar{\text{e}}}\)). Abstract:TiAl alloys undergo cyclic temperature changes during use, the process of which can be simulated by the thermal shock test. A systematic investigation of the thermal shock behavior of four Mo‐containing TiAl alloys is conducted. The increase in Mo content from 1.0% to 4.0% causes the gradual decrease in the volume fraction of γ/α2 lamellar colony, while the volume fraction of equiaxed γ and βo phases gradually increases. At the same time, the thermal shock resistance of the TiAl alloys decreases as the Mo content increases. After thermal shock, cracks often occur within the lamellae and extend in a zigzag manner for TiAl−1.0Mo and TiAl−1.5Mo alloys. Their thermal shock resistance is enhanced by crack deflection, bridging, and microcrack shielding. For TiAl−2.0Mo and TiAl−4.0Mo alloys, cracks occur at the grain boundaries or within the γ phase and extend straight, with the result that these two alloys have worse thermal shock resistance than the other two alloys due to the limited effect of microcrack shielding. In addition, the microstructure stability of TiAl alloys after thermal shock is discussed, and there is a critical value of Mo content between 3.13% and 5.67%, which inhibits the βo → ω phase transition. Herein, the influence of Mo content on the thermal shock properties of TiAl alloys is revealed. When the Mo content is less than 1.5%, crack deflection, bridging, and microcrack shielding improve the thermal shock resistance. When the Mo content is higher than 2.0%, only microcrack shielding plays an effective role.

Abstract:Metal -organic frameworks (MOFs) have often been used for gas storage owing to their high surface areas and nanoscale pores, where they are packed in the tank. The concomitant exothermicity and endothermicity during the gas storage process strongly affect their storage capacity. Understanding the thermal transport in MOFs under mechanical strain is critical to maximizing the gas uptake capacity of MOFs. Here, we systematically investigate the thermal transport in a typical MOF (i.e., HKUST-1 or equivalently MOF-199) considering the external mechanical strain using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 decreases with compressive strain and increases with tensile strain, which is contradictory to the classical Liebfried and Schlomann theory, i.e., the thermal conductivity of crystals should increase with applied compression. Our spectral analysis further shows that the abnormal strain -dependent thermal conductivity can be well explained by the phonon -gas theory. We find that the relaxation time of vibrations in HKUST-1 decreases when compressive strain is applied. This is because the anharmonicity of compressed HKUST-1 increases compared with that of pristine HKUST-1. The anharmonicity of HKUST-1 decreases when tensile strain is applied, and thus, the corresponding vibrational relaxation time increases. Meanwhile, the vibrational group velocity decreases or increases for compressed or tensile HKUST-1, respectively. This is due to the compressionor stretch -induced shift of vibrational branches caused by the structural softening and hardening. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 decreases with compressive strain even though the volumetric heat capacity of compressed HKUST-1 increases. The thermal conductivity of HKUST-1 increases with tensile strain, though the corresponding volumetric heat capacity decreases. Here, we provide a fundamental understanding of the thermal transport mechanisms in MOFs considering mechanical strain, which offers guidance for the thermal management design in these corresponding gas storage applications.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of Y2O3-coated Al composites using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was studied. It was found that Y2O3 particles were coated homogeneously on the Al2O3 powder by means of a liquid-phase particles coating method. The analysis showed that due to the addition of coated Al2O3 micropowders into Al alloys, the interfacial wettability was improved.

Abstract:Al2Mo3O12 is a typical negative thermal expansion (NTE) material, whose thermal expansion behavior depends on its crystal phase. The thermal shock caused by temperature-induced phase transition limits its wide application. The two series of Al2. xScxMo3O12 (0 < x < 1) and Al2Mo3-xWxO12 (0 < x < 2.5) solid solutions with controllable phase transition temperature were synthesized via single cation substitution at the A or B position. The problem of thermal shock caused by the change of temperature is effectively solved in the synthesized Al1.6Sc0.4Mo3O12 and Al2Mo0.5W2.5O12, showing stable NTE performance above room temperature, and the coefficients of thermal expansion of which are -2.19 x 10-6 degrees C-1 in 100-550 degrees C and -4.25 x 10-6 degrees C-1 in 85-500 degrees C, respectively. A-site cation substitution is a more effective way to tune the thermal expansion properties of Al2Mo3O12, which is attributed to the fact that the bond strength of A-O is weaker than that of B-O in the compound.

Abstract:The thermal expansion and phase transition of solid solutions Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The XRD patterns and the results of Rietveld refinement of Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 indicate that the solid solution limit was in the composition range of 0.0≤x≤0.4 and 1.7≤x≤2.0. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (0.0≤x≤0.4) has an orthorhombic structure and exhibits negative thermal expansion between 200°C and 800°C. Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) crystallizes in monoclinic below the phase transition and above, transforms to orthorhombic. Both monoclinic and orthorhombic compounds Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 (1.7≤x≤2.0) present positive thermal expansion. Orthorhombic Yb2−xCrxMo3O12 exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion with the contraction of a and c axes, and the linear thermal expansion coefficients range from negative to positive with increasing chromium content. Partial substitution of Yb3+ for Cr3+ exhibits depressed monoclinic to orthorhombic phase transition.
Design of a Thermally Stable Heat-Resistant (Al2O3+Al3Ti)/Al Composite with Excellent High-Temperature Mechanical Properties: Multimechanism Synergistic Strengthening Strategy

Abstract:The effectiveness of the room-temperature strengthening strategy for aluminum (Al) is compromised at increased temperatures due to grain and precipitate phase coarsening. Overcoming the heightened activity of grain boundaries and dislocations poses a significant challenge in enhancing the high-temperature strength through traditional precipitation strengthening. This study presents novel strengthening strategies that integrate intergranular reinforcements, intragranular reinforcements, refined grain, and stacking faults within an (Al2O3+Al3Ti)/Al composite prepared using sol-gel and powder metallurgy technology. Excellent high-temperature tensile properties are achieved; also, a remarkable fatigue performance at increased temperatures that surpasses those of other existing Al alloys and composites is revealed. These superior characteristics can be attributed to its exceptionally stable microstructure and the synergistic strengthening mechanisms mentioned above. This work offers new insights into designing and fabricating thermally stable Al matrix composites for high-temperature applications.
A new approach to understand the deformation behavior and strengthening mechanism of molybdenum alloy: From single crystal to polycrystal

Abstract:The deformation behavior and strengthening mechanism for Mo-3Nb single crystal with 〈111〉 orientation and polycrystal have been investigated and disclosed comprehensively in a wide temperature range by quasi-static compression with 7% plastic strain. The slip traces of single crystal and polycrystal at room temperature show different features, which long continuous slip traces appear on the surface of deformed Mo-3Nb single crystals while some branch-off slip lines can only be observed in large grains for polycrystals. The conjugate slip planes of single crystals are activated at the elevated temperature, while the slip lines of polycrystals are difficult to be observed because of the grain boundary sliding effect. The compressive stress of single crystals and polycrystals shows different results at different deformation temperatures, suggesting that grain boundaries in polycrystals play an important role in the strengthening mechanism. TEM analysis shows that dislocation entanglement is the main strengthening mechanism both in single crystal and polycrystal during the room temperature deformation. With the increase of temperature, the strengthening mechanism caused by dislocation entanglement becomes ineffective, while grain boundaries continue to hinder the dislocation movement and the strengthening effect greatly weakened due to the dynamic recovery.

Abstract:The influences of aluminum and oxygen additions on structural instabilities in the β phase of binary Ti‐Mo alloys have been investigated, using conventional and aberration-corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy and atom-probe tomography. An addition of 5 wt% Al to the alloy Ti-18 wt% Mo tends to decrease the stability of the 2/3<111> longitudinal phonon, compared with that of the phase O′ formed by the 110<11¯0> transverse phonon. Experiments have been performed to assess whether interstitial oxygen influences these phase instabilities by adding yttrium to getter the matrix oxygen. It has been found that oxygen is not a necessary alloying addition to form the O′ phase.

Abstract:Rare earth zirconates exhibit potential as thermal barrier coatings, but their limited toughness impedes their widespread use. To address this issue, rare earth aluminates are regarded as effective toughening agents for zirconates. However, the thermal conductivity of composites containing rare earth aluminates and zirconates tends to rise. To mitigate this issue, we have developed a series of Yb2O3-doped GAO-GZO composites. The introduction of Yb2O3 results in the formation of a fluorite phase, with Yb3+ ions occupying Gd sites in both GAO and GZO components. Although the fracture toughness remains relatively unchanged, the hardness of the composite improves. The thermal conductivity decreases with increasing Yb2O3 content due to enhanced phonon-defect scattering. Additionally, the coefficient of thermal expansion is reduced due to the stronger Yb-O bonding compared to Gd-O. This study presents a viable strategy for regulating the mechanical and thermal properties of rare earth zirconates reinforced with aluminates through defect engineering.

Abstract:Al2O3-doped tetragonal yttria-stabilized zirconia (t-YSZ) coatings were prepared by plasma spraying under various spraying parameters. The analysis of variance reveals that only Al2O3 addition significantly affects thermal properties of coatings. The electronic structures and microstructures results show that the increase in number of defects and boundary density with the increasing addition of Al2O3 enhances phonon scattering resulting in a decrease in the thermal conductivity, which suggests that the Al2O3 addition can improve the insulation performance of the YSZ coating. The increase in boundary density with the increase in Al2O3 addition is due to recrystallization resulting from the decreasing melting point of Al2O3–YSZ composites, lattice distortion, and the presence of amorphous structure and monoclinic Al2O3 pinning at grain boundaries. The change in the coefficient of thermal expansion with Al2O3 addition is attributable to the variation in the bonding strength of the Al2O3-doped t-YSZ caused by the change in lattice constants.

Abstract:Crystal structures and thermal expansion properties of Yb2−xFexMo3O12 (x=0.0, 0.6, 1.0, 1.1, 1.4) solid solutions have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) at different temperatures. Rietveld analysis of the XRPD data shows that Yb2−xFexMo3O12 solid solutions adopt orthorhombic structure and have variable thermal expansion coefficients controlled by the ratio of Yb3+ to Fe3+. Yb2Mo3O12 shows anisotropic negative thermal expansion property, induced by the reductions in average Yb–O–Mo angle and average apparent Mo2–O bond length with increasing temperatures. As more Yb3+ substituted by Fe3+, the linear thermal expansion coefficients of Yb2−xFexMo3O12 increase from negative to positive. A near-zero thermal expansion coefficient of 0.55×10−6K−1 for Yb0.6Fe1.4Mo3O12 is observed in the temperature range of 573–873K

Abstract:The microstructure and thermophysical properties (specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity coefficient, heat conductivity coefficient) of fine-grained ceramic composites based on yttrium-aluminum garnet Y2.5Nd0.5Al5O12 (YAG:Nd) with different molybdenum content (10, 20, 40 vol. %) are investigated. Submicron Y2.5Nd0.5Al5O12 powders are obtained by co-precipitation method. Powder compositions of YAG:Nd + Mo with the structure “YAG:Nd core – Mo shell” were obtained using wet chemistry techniques and precipitation of the metal phase from salt solutions. Ceramic composite samples were obtained by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. The microstructure and phase composition of ceramics were investigated by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction phase analysis. YAG:Nd + Mo composites have a high relative density (98.1 – 99 %) and a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure with a grain size of 2 – 3 μm. Increased thermal conductivity and heat conductivity of composites is provided with a content of at least 20 vol.% Mo. For composites with 20% and 40% Mo, the heat conductivity coefficient at 1100 °C reaches 7.0 and 8.8 W⋅m–1⋅K–1, respectively. Sintered composites YAG: Nd + Mo at room temperature and elevated temperatures (up to 1100 °C) have a high heat conductivity coefficient, exceeding the heat conductivity coefficient of uranium dioxide UO2. This makes it possible to use ceramics YAG:Nd+Mo as heat-resistant inert fuel matrices.
