Abstract:The development of novel cathode catalysts is of great importance to the practical applications of nonaqueous lithium oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. Here by using first-principles calculations, we revealed the catalytic mechanism and evaluated the catalytic activity of monolayer germanium monochalcogenides (2D-GeXs, X = S/Se) as cathode catalytic materials. For 2D-GeXs, Li4O4 with a ring-like structure is the final discharge product. The free energy diagram demonstrates that 2D-GeSe is more energetically favorable than 2D-GeS due to its considerably lower oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) overpotential (0.94 V) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential (1.30 V), which originate from its weaker binding with LiO2 and stronger binding with the inserted Li atom. The analyses on electronic properties elucidate that the final product of Li4O4 on 2D-GeSe induces the semiconductor to semi-metal transition. Our results reflect that 2D-GeSe is an excellent candidate as a cathode material in nonaqueous Li-O-2 batteries, while 2D-GeS is not appropriate.

Abstract:Amorphous germanium@C and germanium chalcogenides@C composites have been fabricated via a simply developed synthetic route. Taking advantage of the carbon coating of these materials, they all exhibit excellent Li storage properties as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Typically, Ge@C presents a capacity of 672 mAh g(-1) after 80 cycles at current density of 0.5 A g(-1). The capacities of GeS@C are about 604 mAh g(-1) over 180 cycles at 0.2 A g(-1) and 365 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles, respectively. As for GeSe@C electrode, it exhibit high capacities of nearly 780 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) over 180 cycles and 562 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) over 60 cycles.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient catalysts in the cathodes of rechargeable Li-O2 batteries is a considerable challenge. To enhance the electrochemical performance of the Li-O2 battery, it is essential to choose a suitable catalyst material. Copper selenide (CuSe) is considered as a more promising cathode catalyst material for Li-O2 battery due to its better conductivity and rich electrochemical active sites. However, its electrochemical reaction and fundamental catalytic mechanism remain unclear till now. Herein, in-situ environmental transmission electron microscopy technique was used to study the catalysis mechanism of the CuSe nanosheets in Li-O2 batteries during discharge and charge processes. It is found that Li2O was formed and decomposed around the ultrafine-grained Cu during the discharge and charge processes, respectively, demonstrating excellent cycling. This indicate that the freshly formed ultrafine-grained Cu in the conversion reaction catalyzed the latter four-electron-transfer oxygen reduction reaction, leading to the formation of Li2O. Our study provides important understanding of the electrochemistry of the Li-O2 nanobatteries, which will aid the development of high-performance Li-O2 batteries for energy storage applications.
Harnessing The Concurrent Reaction Dynamics In Active Si And Ge To Achieve High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Advanced composite electrodes containing multiple active components are often used in lithium-ion batteries for practical applications. The performance of such heterogeneous composite electrodes can in principle be enhanced by tailoring the concurrent reaction dynamics in multiple active components for promoting their collective beneficial effects. However, the potential of this design principle has remained uncharted to date. Here we develop a composite anode of Cu/Si/Ge nanowire arrays, where each nanowire consists of a core of Cu segments and a Si/Ge bilayer shell. This unique electrode architecture exhibited a markedly improved electrochemical performance over the reference Cu/Si systems, demonstrating a stable capacity retention (81% after 3000 cycles at 2C) and doubled specific capacity at a rate of 16C (1C = 2 A g(-1)). By using in situ transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical testing, we unravel a novel reaction mechanism of dynamic co-lithiation/co-delithiation in the active Si and Ge bilayer, which is shown to effectively alleviate the electrochemically induced mechanical degradation and thus greatly enhance the long-cycle stability of the electrode. Our findings offer insights into a rational design of high-performance lithium-ion batteries via exploiting the concurrent reaction dynamics in the multiple active components of composite electrodes.
Monolayer graphitic germanium carbide (g-GeC): the promising cathode catalyst for fuel cell and lithium–oxygen battery applications

Abstract:Designing and searching high-efficient metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are demanding objectives for academic and industrial researches. Herein, the ORR mechanism of monolayer graphitic germanium carbide (g-GeC) was studied by first-principles calculations. The monolayer g-GeC possesses excellent electro-catalytic properties that originate from the charge redistribution due to electronegativity difference. Adsorption and dissociation of oxygen can easily take place at room temperature, which facilitates the subsequent ORR catalysis. The feasibility and activity of monolayer g-GeC as a cathode catalyst in fuel cells and nonaqueous Li-O-2 batteries were evaluated by plotting free energy diagrams. The calculation results revealed that the g-GeC displays very low overpotentials that are comparable to Pt-based catalysts. This study provides a novel understanding of the electrochemical performance of g-GeC materials, and suggests its great potential as a metal-free ORR catalyst to substitute the traditional Pt-based catalysts.
Monolayer Fe3GeX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries enable them to be promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, the commercialization of Li-S batteries is presently hindered by the bottlenecks, such as the low conductivity of sulfur species, shuttle effect of polysulfides, and poor conversion efficiency in discharging/charging processes. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, we predicted that the two-dimensional magnetic Fe3GeX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) monolayers are quite promising to overcome the aforesaid problems. The Fe3GeX2 monolayer has metallic electronic structures and moderate binding strength to the soluble lithium polysulfides, which are expected to improve the overall electric conductivity of sulfur species and anchor the soluble lithium polysulfides to suppress the shuttle effect. Remarkably, Fe3GeX2 monolayers show bifunctional electrocatalytic activity to the S reduction reaction and the Li2S decomposition reaction, which improves the conversion efficiency in discharging and charging processes. This finding may open up an avenue for the development of high-performance Li-S batteries.
Selective Adsorption and Electrocatalysis of Polysulfides Through Hexatomic Nickel Clusters Embedded in N-Doped Graphene Toward High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Abstract:The shuttle effect hinders the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to the poor affinity between a substrate and Li polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish transition of soluble LiPSs to insoluble Li 2 S or elemental S. Here, we report that Ni hexatomic clusters embedded in a nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) graphene framework (Ni-N/G) possess stronger interaction with soluble polysulfides than that with insoluble polysulfides. The synthetic electrocatalyst deployed in the sulfur cathode plays a multifunctional role: (i) selectively adsorbing the polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte, (ii) expediting the sluggish liquid-solid phase transformations at the active sites as electrocatalysts, and (iii) accelerating the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction of multielectron sulfur, thereby inhibiting the dissolution of LiPSs. The constructed S@Ni-N/G cathode delivers an areal capacity of 9.43 mAh cm -2 at 0.1 C at S loading of 6.8 mg cm -2 , and it exhibits a gravimetric capacity of 1104 mAh g -1 with a capacity fading rate of 0.045% per cycle over 50 cycles at 0.2 C at S loading of 2.0 mg cm -2 . This work opens a rational approach to achieve the selective adsorption and expediting of polysulfide transition for the performance enhancement of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The nonaqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery is promising as a superior energy storage medium, whose practical applications are limited by the catalytic performance of cathode catalysts. Using density functional theory calculations, we have systematically investigated the catalytic mechanism and catalytic performance of siligraphenes as cathode catalysts in nonaqueous Li-O-2 batteries. For the siligraphenes studied here, Li2O is the final discharge product. Among them, the single-layered SiC (SL-SiC) exhibits potential as a suitable cathode catalyst due to the considerably low overpotential values during discharge and charge process. That is, 0.73 V for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and 1.87 V for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The quantitative analysis indicates that the ORR overpotential on siligraphenes is linearly correlated with the DEads of the last added Li in Li4O2* (* denotes the adsorbed surface), while the OER overpotential is linearly correlated with the E-ads of LiO2 on surface. Our investigations elucidate quantitative correlations between the catalytic performance of siligraphenes and the adsorption performance of Li-contained intermediates on them, which provides promising approach to develop metal-free cathode catalysts with high catalytic activity. Abstract:Recent studies have shown that two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as siloxene and germanane, as electrode in alkali metal ion batteries can lead to excellent performance. The improved electrochemical behavior of these 2D active materials could be due to the limited volume change during charge and discharge, based on an intercalation rather than an alloying mechanism. In addition, if Si is effective in reducing costs due to its low price and abundant resource reserves, its conductivity is low, while Ge can provide higher electronic conductivity than Si, but is more expensive. In this respect, in order to integrate their cheapness and excellent conductivity, we propose a series of layered materials (named siliganes, i.e., Si1-xGex, 0.1 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.9), which consist of 2D Si-Ge composites. Through a simple method, the Ca2+ cations were completely removed from the precursor Ca(Si1-xGex)2, and the lamellar siliganes were obtained. The layered materials were tested in Na- and K- ion batteries. Based on the better electrochemical performance, we identified siligane_Si0.1Ge0.9 as the best candidate. At a current density of 0.05 A g−1, its reversible capacities of the Na ion and K ion cells were 276 mAh g−1 and 132 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles, respectively.

Engineering Catalytic CoSe–ZnSe Heterojunctions Anchored on Graphene Aerogels for Bidirectional Sulfur Conversion Reactions

Abstract:Sluggish sulfur reduction and lithium sulfide (Li2 S) oxidation prevent the widespread use of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries. The authors propose that a transition metal selenide heterojunction (CoSe-ZnSe) catalytically accelerates bidirectional sulfur conversion reactions. A combination of synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations show that a highly active heterointerface with charge redistribution and structure distortion effectively immobilizes sulfur species, facilitates Li ion diffusion, and decreases the sulfur reduction and Li2 S oxidation energy barriers. The CoSe-ZnSe catalytic cathode exhibits high areal capacities, good rate capability, and superior cycling stability with capacity fading rate of 0.027% per cycle over 1700 cycles. Furthermore, CoSe-ZnSe heterojunctions anchored on graphene aerogels (CoSe-ZnSe@G) enhance ionic transport and catalytic activity under high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte conditions. A high areal capacity of 8.0 mAh cm-2 is achieved at an electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 3 µL mg-1 . This study demonstrates the importance of bidirectional catalytic heterojunctions and structure engineering in boosting Li-S battery performances.

Abstract:Due to their layered structure and greater electrical conductivity compared to traditional metal oxides, layered metal selenides have been extensively explored as promising electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. The greatest obstacles to their continued growth, however, are the substantial volume change and particle agglomeration during cycling. In this work, layered GeSe/ thermally-reduced graphene oxide (TRG) composites were successfully synthesized by using a facile shear-force exfoliation approach. When a highly conductive TRG matrix was incorporated with GeSe particles, the resultant GeSe/TRG composite electrode achieved an impressive reversible capacity (>840.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1C), improved rate capability as well as excellent cycling stability. The remarkable improvement in electrochemical performance of the GeSe/TRG composite electrode corresponds to the TRG matrix, which potentially constructs an efficient conductive channel and serves as a flexible mechanical buffer for the restriction of volume expansion and particle aggregation.

Abstract:Among germanium-based composites, GeS2 has attracted increasing concerns owning to its high theoretical capacity when applied to lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) as anode materials. Nevertheless, the intrinsic poor conductivity and volume expansion issues of GeS2 hindered its practical applications. Herein, we report a ball milling-assisted solid-state reaction approach to simultaneously smash GeS2 particles and exfoliate graphite powder. In this way, the GeS2 was pulverized and well anchored in exfoliated graphite sheets. When used as anode electrode for LiBs, the graphite sheets not only served as electron transfer layers, but also helped alleviating the volume shrinkage/expansion of GeS2 during the repeated lithiation/de-lithiation processes. The well designed GeS2-coated graphite sheet structure endow the hybrid GeS2/graphite (GeS2/C) anode with high reversible capacity. For instance, the GeS2/C anode powder delivered specific capacities of 823.3 and 395.3 mAh g-1 at 100th and 200th cycle under 0.1 and 1.5 A g-1, respectively, these values were higher than that of the neat GeS2 anode (corresponding to 453.1 and 81.0 mAh g-1). This study offers a facile and economical strategy to settle the drawbacks of GeS2 for LiBs anode, which shed some light on guiding the preparation of various types of graphite-supported electrodes with improved integral electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Germanium dioxide (GeO2) has recently demonstrated high theoretical capacity and is being considered as the most promising candidate to substitute commercial carbon-based anodes of lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, practical application of GeO2 materials to lithium-ion batteries is greatly hampered by the huge volume variation during cycling. Herein, the GeO2 dispersions in different carbon matrices (i.e., 0D mesoporous carbon microspheres, 1D carbon nanotube, 2D reduced graphene oxide) are prepared by a simple route. In a comparison of these three composites, GeO2 embedded in 0D mesoporous carbon microspheres (denoted as GeO2@MCS) shows the best electrochemical performance regarding cyclability (852 mA h g(-1) at a rate of 0.5 A g(-1) after 100 cycles) and rate capability (269 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) after 50 cycles). The improved electrochemical performance arises from the novel structure that combines a variety of advantages: easy access of electrolyte and short transport path of Li+, and high conductivity transport of electrons through the 3D interconnected channels of MCS matrix. What is more, the 3D interconnected pores of MCS could effectively accommodate the huge volume change of GeO2 during cycling and maintain perfect electrical conductivity throughout the electrode.
Reaction Mechanism and Performance of Innovative 2D Germanane‐Silicane Alloys: SixGe1−xH Electrodes in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:2D materials with compositions Si0.25Ge0.75H, Si0.50Ge0.50H and Si0.75Ge0.25H, are synthesized a simple and efficient chemical exfoliation of their Zintl phases. Among these, the Si0.50Ge0.50H electrode displays the most superior performance, boosting a discharge capacity of 1059 mAh g−1 following 60 cycles at a current density of 75 mA g−1. A comprehensive ex‐situ electrochemical analysis is performed to study the reaction mechanisms of lithiation/delithiation. The adjustable structures and remarkable physicochemical properties of 2D monoelemental materials, such as silicene and germanene, have attracted significant attention in recent years. They can be transformed into silicane (SiH) and germanane (GeH) through covalent functionalization via hydrogen atom termination. However, synthesizing these materials with a scalable and low‐cost fabrication process to achieve high‐quality 2D SiH and GeH poses challenges. Herein, groundbreaking 2D SiH and GeH materials with varying compositions, specifically Si0.25Ge0.75H, Si0.50Ge0.50H, and Si0.75Ge0.25H, are prepared through a simple and efficient chemical exfoliation of their Zintl phases. These 2D materials offer significant advantages, including their large surface area, high mechanical flexibility, rapid electron mobility, and defect‐rich loose‐layered structures. Among these compositions, the Si0.50Ge0.50H electrode demonstrates the highest discharge capacity, reaching up to 1059 mAh g−1 after 60 cycles at a current density of 75 mA g−1. A comprehensive ex‐situ electrochemical analysis is conducted to investigate the reaction mechanisms of lithiation/delithiation in Si0.50Ge0.50H. Subsequently, an initial assessment of the c‐Li15(SixGe1‐x)4 phase after lithiation and the a‐Si0.50Ge0.50 phase after delithiation is presented. Hence, this study contributes crucial insights into the (de)lithiation reaction mechanisms within germanane‐silicane alloys. Such understanding is pivotal for mastering promising materials that amalgamate the finest properties of silicon and germanium.

Confining Nano-GeS 2 in Cross-Linked Porous Carbon Networks for High-Performance and Flexible Li-Ion Battery Anodes

Abstract:As anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), GeS2 has attracted considerable attention owing to its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, pulverization of GeS2 during the lithiation/delithiation process impedes its practical applications. Hybrid cross-linking with the second phase material is an effective strategy to improve the charge/discharge cycling performance. Herein, a high-capacity, long cycle-life nano-GeS2/carbon (GeS2/C) composite was facilely synthesized via the solid-state ball milling reaction. GeS2/C was then used to construct the three-dimensional (3D) flexible electrode. In this way, the flexible electrode with nano-GeS2/C particles confining in porous carbon networks exhibited improved reversible capacity and cycling performance, thanks to the unique confinement cellular structure. For instance, the flexible electrode with ∼500 μm thickness delivered capacities of ∼991, ∼888, ∼737, and ∼604 mA h g–1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 A g–1, respectively. Upon stacking into two layers of the GeS2/C flexible electrode, the increased thickness displayed no effects on its diffuse-controlled capacity ratio and Li+ diffusion coefficient. Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SiBs) are highly promising to substitute lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) in wide applications, such as energy storage. The metal sulfide or selenium are candidate anodes for high-energy density SiBs resulting from their theoretically higher initial coulombic efficiency, higher conductivity, and lower voltage polarization. Herein, we found that GeSe2 is more favorable than GeS2 for Na ion storage. The first-principle calculation revealed that the formation energy of GeSe2 is 54.997 kJ mol–1 less than that of GeS2, Ge–Se bonds are easier to rebuild than Ge–S bonds, and Na2Se is easier to decompose than Na2S. The experimental investigation proved that all Na ions are reversible in a GeSe2/Na battery system when the operated voltage window was fixed in 0.01–3 V, which is not realized in a GeS2/Na battery. With galvanization discharge/charge voltage fixed in 0.01–2.5 V, the reversible capacity of GeSe2/C in the 1st, 2nd, 50th, and 100th cycles was 638, 540, 481, and 427 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1, while the corresponding values of GeS2/C were only 987, 408, 213, and 162 mA g–1, respectively. The rate charge capacity of GeSe2/C was about 416, 344, 317, 263, 215, 188, 165, and 458 mAh g–1 at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 0.2 A g–1, and the corresponding capacity of GeS2 is 294, 228, 200, 159, 128, 110, 98, and 282 mAh cm–1, respectively. Abstract:GeO2 is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity (1125 mAh/g), and moderately low operating voltage (<1.5 V). Nevertheless, the fabrication of truly durable GeO2 anode with satisfactory rate capability and cycling stability remains a big challenge because of its inherent low conductivity, and the large volume expansion upon charge-discharge that causes severe capacity fading. In this study, an innovative nanostructure with size-adjustable GeO2 nanoparticles (16–26 nm) embedded in continuous S-doped carbon (GeO2/S-doped carbon, GSC) has been successfully fabricated via a facile in-situ simultaneous polymerization method followed by heat treatment. The electrochemical results indicate that the as-prepared GSC nanocomposites show high reversible capacity (672.9 mAh/g at 50 mA/g), superior rate capability (332.9 mAh/g at 1000 mA/g), and long-term cycle life (179 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 1000 mA/g) as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The excellent electrochemical performance of GSC nanocomposites could be ascribed to the homogeneous and continuous S-doped carbon matrix, which provides shortened ion diffusion pathway, increased electrical conductivity, enhanced structural stability, and introduced surface/interface property.

Fast Intercalation of Lithium in Semi-Metallic γ-GeSe Nanosheet: A New Group-IV Monochalcogenide for Lithium-Ion Battery Application

Abstract:Existence of van der Waals gaps renders two-dimensional (2D) materials ideal passages of lithium for being used as anode materials. However, the requirement of good conductivity significantly limits the choice of 2D candidates. So far only graphite is satisfying due to its relatively high conductivity. Recently, a new polymorph of layered germanium selenide (Gamma-GeSe) was proven to be semimetal in its bulk phase with a higher conductivity than graphite while its monolayer behaves semiconducting. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we examined the possibility of using this new group-IV monochalcogenide, Gamma-GeSe, as anode in the Li-ion battery (LIBs). Our studies revealed that Li atom would form an ionic adsorption with adjacent selenium atoms at the hollow site and exist in cationic state (lost 0.89 e to Gamma-GeSe). Results of climbing image-nudged elastic band show the diffusion barrier of Li is 0.21 eV in the monolayer limit, which can activate a relatively fast diffusion even at room temperature on the Gamma-GeSe surface. The calculated theoretical average voltages range from 0.071 to 0.015 V at different stoichiometry of LixGeSe with minor volume variation, suggesting its potential application as anode of LIBs. The predicted moderate binding energy, a low open circuit voltage (comparable to graphite) and a fast motion of Li suggests that Gamma-GeSe nanosheet can be chemically exfoliated via Li intercalation and a promising candidate as the anode material for LIBs.

An Integrated Hybrid Interlayer for Polysulfides/selenides Regulation Toward Advanced Li–SeS2 Batteries

Abstract:Selenium disulfide (SeS2) is one of the promising cathode materials for high energy density batteries, since it has a competitive theoretical specific capacity (1345 mAh g(-1)) and much better electrical conductivity over sulfur (S). Similar to S cathode, however, the practical application of SeS2 cathode is also impeded by poor cycling performance caused by the shuttling phenomenon of soluble lithium polysulfides/selenides. In this work, a graphene sponge/titanium nitride (TiN) nanowires composite is prepared as the well-designed multi-functional hybrid interlayer to be applied in Li-SeS2 batteries for the first time. The three-dimensional porous conductive framework constructed by graphene nanoscrolls/ nanosheets coexited sponge and TiN nanowires provides efficient transfer channels for electrons and ions. Moreover, TiN not only has strong chemical adsorption to trap the soluble polysulfides/selenides, but also possesses electrocatalytic effects to promote the electrochemical reaction of the cathodic solidliquid/liquid-solid and the anodic solid-liquid conversions. By virtue of the multi-functional capabilities, the as-assembled cells equipped with the hybrid interlayer exhibit an outstanding electrochemical performance with a long cycling life, a low capacity decay (0.08% per cycle), and superior rate capability (493 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)).
