Abstract:The CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CERR) is a potential CO2 conversion method since it reduces CO2 to useful fuels and chemicals with the feasible and clean harnessing of electrons. The properties of the cathode material used in CERR is the determining factor in controlling the activity, selectivity and stability of the reaction. Compared with metal cathode catalysts, which have been extensively studied, metal-free carbon materials are emerging as highly promising alternatives due to their controllable composition, favorable energy efficiency, and excellent stability. In addition, the heteroatom doping can further tune the electroactivity of the nanostructured carbon cathode in CERR. This highlight summarizes the recent developments of heteroatom-doped carbon cathode catalysts for CERR. Not only are the preparation method and performance of the doped carbon materials discussed in detail, but so are the active center and related mechanisms in CERR.

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:The rapid increase of the CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere has resulted in numerous environmental issues, such as global warming, ocean acidification, melting of the polar ice, rising sea level, and extinction of species. To search for suitable and capable catalytic systems for CO2 conversion, electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) holds great promise. Emerging heterogeneous carbon materials have been considered as promising metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR, owing to their abundant natural resources, tailorable porous structures, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. They exhibit remarkable CO2RR properties, including catalytic activity, long durability, and high selectivity. Here, various carbon materials (e.g., carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, diamond, nanoporous carbon, and graphene dots) with heteroatom doping (e.g., N, S, and B) that can be used as metal-free catalysts for the CO2RR are highlighted. Recent advances regarding the identification of active sites for the CO2RR and the pathway of reduction of CO2 to the final product are comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, the emerging challenges and some perspectives on the development of heteroatom-doped carbon materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are included.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) stands out as a highly promising approach to simultaneously resolve the elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and its utilization to produce value-added products. One of the present challenges is the rational design of efficient catalysts toward eCO2RR and the understanding of their structure-activity relationship. Covalent porous catalysts (CPCs) with atomically dispersed active sites embedded in porous organic backbone, including polymer-based catalysts, such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), and molecule-based catalysts, such as porous organic cages (POCs) have received increasing attention recently. They are featured with extremely high atom utilization, customizable porosity, customizable backbone, and distinct electronic properties. In this review, the design principles of CPCs, both in their selection of metal sites (metallic centers, heterometallic centers and their axial coordination) and optimization of organic backbones (chelating sites, their electronic modulation and microstructures) will be covered, aiming to provide a guidance to tune their eCO2RR performance. Then representative examples will be discussed to reveal their structure-activity relationships. The perspective and key challenges in CPCs based eCO2RR electrocatalysts will be finally proposed.

In recent years, considerable efforts are focused on the development of transition‐metal (TM)‐based catalysts for the selectively electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR). Co‐based catalysts emerge as one of the most promising electrocatalysts with high Faradaic efficiency, current density, and low overpotential, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance toward ECO2RR for CO and HCOOH productions that are economically viable. The intrinsic contribution of Co and the synergistic effects in Co‐hybrid catalysts play essential roles for future commercial productions by ECO2RR. This review summarizes the rational design of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, including molecular, single‐metal‐site, and oxide‐derived catalysts, along with the nanostructure engineering techniques to highlight the distribution of the ECO2RR products by Co‐based catalysts. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations and advanced in situ characterizations contribute to interpreting the synergies between Co and other materials for the enhanced product selectivity and catalytic activity. Challenges and outlook concerning the catalyst design and reaction mechanism, including the upgrading of reaction systems of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, are also discussed.

Abstract:As an important part of carbon neutralization, carbon dioxide electroreduction reaction (CO 2 RR) can convert CO 2 into high value-added chemicals and fuels to realize the recycling of carbon resources and solve the problem of environmental pollution.Therefore, exploring the element species and surface structure of the catalyst plays a central role in improving the performance of the catalyst, enhancing the CO 2 conversion efficiency and forming C 1 and C 2+ products.Here, we summarize the recent progress in the selective regulation of CO 2 RR reaction products by different elements.In particular, we emphasize the structure-property relationship of CO 2 RR by the microenvironment of metal center and substrate, heteroatom doping, hydrogen bond network of metal-free polymer, and construction of heterogeneous catalytic system.At the same time, the recent advances for the identification of CO 2 RR active sites and mechanistic studies on the process of reducing CO 2 conversion to different products are reviewed, as well as a comprehensive review to the final products.Finally, we outline the inevitable challenges faced by CO 2 RR and present our own recommendations aimed at contributing to CO 2 resource utilization.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction to value-added chemicals/fuels provides a promising way to mitigate CO2 emission and alleviate energy shortage. CO2 -to-CO conversion involves only two-electron/proton transfer and thus is kinetically fast. Among the various developed CO2 -to-CO reduction electrocatalysts, transition metal/N-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts are attractive due to their low cost and high activity. In this work, recent progress on the development of M-N-C catalysts for electrochemical CO2 -to-CO conversion is reviewed in detail. The regulation of the active sites in M-N-C catalysts and their related adjustable electrocatalytic CO2 reduction performance is discussed. A visual performance comparison of M-N-C catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) reported over the recent years is given, which suggests that Ni and Fe-N-C catalysts are the most promising candidates for large-scale reduction of CO2 to produce CO. Finally, outlooks and challenges are proposed for future research of CO2 -to-CO conversion.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 into valuable products holds the prospect for the shortage of fossil fuels and global warming. For the design of catalysts, manipulating the electronic structures of catalysts plays a vital role in the adsorption, activation, and desorption behaviors during the catalytic process. Here, we summarize recent progress in CO2 electroreduction from the perspective of engineering electronic structures of catalysts. The strategies include vacancy engineering, heteroatom substitution, atomic layer regulation, sharp-tip effect, and interlayer bond length regulation. Particularly, combining with the experimental and theoretical results reported previously, we provide an atomic-level insight into the effect of electronic structure on CO2 activation.
Boosting electrochemical CO2 reduction on ternary heteroatoms-doped porous carbon

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals using metal-free carbon catalysts is attractive, but single N-doped carbons suffer from poor efficiency (<90%) and low current density (<2 mA cm−2). Herein, we report a facile and scalable preparation of ternary heteroatoms (N, S, P)-doped carbon electrocatalyst to enhance electrochemical activity, because the multi-heteroatoms with different sizes and electronegativities can modulate the electronic properties to facilitate CO2 localization and provide abundant active sites with enhanced charge-carrier concentrations. It exhibits high activity toward CO2 electroreduction to CO activity with 92% CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) at −0.7 VRHE and low onset overpotential of 270 mV. The promising potential of industrial application is manifested by the high current density of 245 mA cm−2 and stable FECO above 98% in a flow-cell configuration. Moreover, in-situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that *COOH is the key intermediate in CO2-to-CO conversion. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of N, S, and P heteroatoms boosts the catalytic activity by greatly decreasing the free energy barrier of *COOH formation. Furthermore, the morphological benefit of hierarchically porous structures plays a synergistic role in improving the CO2 reduction activity.

Abstract:Abstract There are growing interests in metal‐free heteroatom‐doped carbons for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Previous studies extensively focus on the effect of N‐doping, and their products severely suffer from low current density (mostly <2 mA cm−2) and limited selectivity (<90%). Here, it is reported that heteroatom codoping offers a promising solution to the above challenge. As a proof of concept, N,P‐codoped mesoporous carbon is prepared by annealing phytic‐acid‐functionalized ZIF‐8 in NH3. In CO2‐saturated 0.5 m NaHCO3, the catalyst enables CO2 reduction to CO with great selectivity close to 100% and large CO partial current density (≈8 mA cm−2), which are, to the best of knowledge, superior to all other relevant competitors. Theoretical simulations show that the improved activity and selectivity are stemmed from the enhanced surface adsorption of *COOH and *CO intermediates as a result of the synergy of N and P codoping.

Abstract:Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have emerged as promising candidates for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) due to their uniform active sites and high atomic utilization rate. However, poor efficiency at low overpotentials and unclear reaction mechanisms limit the application of M-N-C catalysts. In this study, Fe-N-C catalysts are developed by incorporating S atoms onto ordered hierarchical porous carbon substrates with a molecular iron thiophenoporphyrin. The well-prepared FeSNC catalyst exhibits superior CO2RR activity and stability, attributes to an optimized electronic environment, and enhances the adsorption of reaction intermediates. It displays the highest CO selectivity of 94.0% at -0.58 V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and achieves the highest partial current density of 13.64 mA cm-2 at -0.88 V. Furthermore, when employed as the cathode in a Zn-CO2 battery, FeSNC achieves a high-power density of 1.19 mW cm-2 and stable charge-discharge cycles. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the incorporation of S atoms into the hierarchical porous carbon substrate led to the iron center becoming more electron-rich, consequently improving the adsorption of the crucial reaction intermediate *COOH. This study underscores the significance of hierarchical porous structures and heteroatom doping for advancing electrocatalytic CO2RR and energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission has caused greenhouse gas pollution worldwide. Hence, strengthening CO2 recycling is necessary. CO2 electroreduction reaction (CRR) is recognized as a promising approach to utilize waste CO2. Electrocatalysts in the CRR process play a critical role in determining the selectivity and activity of CRR. Different types of electrocatalysts are introduced in this review: noble metals and their derived compounds, transition metals and their derived compounds, organic polymer, and carbon-based materials, as well as their major products, Faradaic efficiency, current density, and onset potential. Furthermore, this paper overviews the recent progress of the following two major applications of CRR according to the different energy conversion methods: electricity generation and formation of valuable carbonaceous products. Considering electricity generation devices, the electrochemical properties of metal–CO2 batteries, including Li–CO2, Na–CO2, Al–CO2, and Zn–CO2 batteries, are mainly summarized. Finally, different pathways of CO2 electroreduction to carbon-based fuels is presented, and their reaction mechanisms are illustrated. This review provides a clear and innovative insight into the entire reaction process of CRR, guiding the new electrocatalysts design, state-of-the-art analysis technique application, and reaction system innovation.
