Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doping of carbon materials has gained much attention recent decades since it was believed to be a brilliant strategy to endow carbon with enhanced physical and chemical properties. In addition, the doped carbon has been frequently employed in various fields such as supercapacitors, batteries, catalytic hydrogenation reactions due to its unique structure and superior features, among which selective hydrogenation is an essential procedure during organic synthesis and has wide industrial applications. It is proved that the incorporation of heteroatoms could have a great effect on the original carbon, such as charge distribution and surface defects, which could further influence the electronic effect and physical interaction between carbon carrier and supported metal, thereby enhance its catalytic performance in hydrogenation reactions. Herein, we briefly reviewed recent progress in the effect of heteroatoms on carbon properties. Meanwhile, the synthesis strategies of doped-carbon and the application of these catalysts in series of hydrogenation reactions were also summarized.

Abstract:The rapid increase of the CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere has resulted in numerous environmental issues, such as global warming, ocean acidification, melting of the polar ice, rising sea level, and extinction of species. To search for suitable and capable catalytic systems for CO2 conversion, electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) holds great promise. Emerging heterogeneous carbon materials have been considered as promising metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR, owing to their abundant natural resources, tailorable porous structures, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. They exhibit remarkable CO2RR properties, including catalytic activity, long durability, and high selectivity. Here, various carbon materials (e.g., carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, diamond, nanoporous carbon, and graphene dots) with heteroatom doping (e.g., N, S, and B) that can be used as metal-free catalysts for the CO2RR are highlighted. Recent advances regarding the identification of active sites for the CO2RR and the pathway of reduction of CO2 to the final product are comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, the emerging challenges and some perspectives on the development of heteroatom-doped carbon materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are included.

Abstract:In recent years, the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation has become a topic of great interest. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), linked by covalent bonds, have emerged as promising materials in the field of electrocatalysis due to their well-defined structures, high specific surface areas, tunable pore structures, and excellent acid–base stability. However, the low conductivity of COF materials often limits their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. To enhance the catalytic performance of COF-based catalysts, various nanomaterials are integrated into COFs to form composite catalysts. The stable and tunable porous structure of COFs provides an ideal platform for these nanomaterials, leading to improved electrocatalytic activity. Through rational design, COF-based composite electrocatalysts can achieve synergistic effects between nanomaterials and the COF carrier, enabling efficient targeted electrocatalysis. This review summarizes the applications of nanomaterial-incorporated COF-based catalysts in hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, oxygen reduction, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction. Additionally, it outlines design principles for COF-based composite electrocatalysis, focusing on structure–activity relationships and synergistic effects in COF composite nanomaterial electrocatalysts, as well as challenges and future perspectives for next-generation composite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction into chemicals or fuels by electrocatalysis can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate the energy crisis. Currently, CO 2 electrocatalytic reduction (CO 2 RR) has been considered as an ideal way to achieve "carbon neutrality." In CO 2 RR, the characteristics and properties of catalysts directly determine the reaction activity and selectivity of the catalytic process. Much attention has been paid to carbon-based catalysts because of their diversity, low cost, high availability, and high throughput. However, electrically neutral carbon atoms have no catalytic activity. Incorporating heteroatoms has become an effective strategy to control the catalytic activity of carbon-based materials. The doped carbon-based catalysts reported at present show excellent catalytic performance and application potential in CO 2 RR. Based on the type and quantity of heteroatoms doped into carbon-based catalysts, this review summarizes the performances and catalytic mechanisms of carbon-based materials doped with a single atom (including metal and without metal) and multi atoms (including metal and without metal) in CO 2 RR and reveals prospects for developing CO 2 electroreduction in the future.

Abstract:In view of the climate changes caused by the continuously rising levels of atmospheric CO2 , advanced technologies associated with CO2 conversion are highly desirable. In recent decades, electrochemical reduction of CO2 has been extensively studied since it can reduce CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels. Considering the sluggish reaction kinetics of the CO2 molecule, efficient and robust electrocatalysts are required to promote this conversion reaction. Here, recent progress and opportunities in inorganic heterogeneous electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are discussed, from the viewpoint of both experimental and computational aspects. Based on elemental composition, the inorganic catalysts presented here are classified into four groups: metals, transition-metal oxides, transition-metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based materials. However, despite encouraging accomplishments made in this area, substantial advances in CO2 electrolysis are still needed to meet the criteria for practical applications. Therefore, in the last part, several promising strategies, including surface engineering, chemical modification, nanostructured catalysts, and composite materials, are proposed to facilitate the future development of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:The continual rise of the CO2 concentration in the Earth’s atmosphere is the foremost reason for environmental concerns such as global warming, ocean acidification, rising sea levels, and the extinction of various species. The electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is a promising green and efficient approach for converting CO2 to high-value-added products such as alcohols, acids, and chemicals. Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts is the main barrier to scaling up CO2RR for large-scale applications. Heteroatom-doped porous carbon-based (HA-PCs) catalysts are deemed as green, efficient, low-cost, and durable electrocatalysts for the CO2RR due to their great physiochemical and catalytic merits (i.e., great surface area, electrical conductivity, rich electrical density, active sites, inferior H2 evolution activity, tailorable structures, and chemical–physical–thermal stability). They are also easily synthesized in a high yield from inexpensive and earth-abundant resources that meet sustainability and large-scale requirements. This review emphasizes the rational synthesis of HA-PCs for the CO2RR rooting from the engineering methods of HA-PCs to the effect of mono, binary, and ternary dopants (i.e., N, S, F, or B) on the CO2RR activity and durability. The effect of CO2 on the environment and human health, in addition to the recent advances in CO2RR fundamental pathways and mechanisms, are also discussed. Finally, the evolving challenges and future perspectives on the development of heteroatom-doped porous carbon-based nanocatalysts for the CO2RR are underlined.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 into value-added chemicals provides a promising approach to mitigate climate change caused by CO2 from excess consumption of fossil fuels. As the CO2 molecule is chemically inert and the reaction kinetics is sluggish, efficient electrocatalysts are thus highly required for promoting the conversion of CO2. With great efforts devoted to improving the catalytic performance, the development of electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction has gone from bulk metals with poor control to nanostructures with atomic precision. Nanostructured electrocatalysts with atomic precision are believed to be capable of combining the advantages of heterogeneous and homogenous catalysts. In this review, the recent advances in designing nanostructured electrocatalysts at the atomic level for boosting the catalytic performance toward CO2 reduction and revealing the structure-property relationship are summarized. The challenges and opportunities in the near future are also proposed for paving the development of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 provides a sustainable solution to address the intermittent renewable electricity storage while recycling CO2 to produce fuels and chemicals. Highly efficient catalytic materials and reaction systems are required to drive this process economically. This Review highlights the new trends in advancing the electrochemical reduction of CO2 by developing and designing nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. The activity, selectivity and reaction mechanism are significantly affected by the nano effects in nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. In the future, energy efficiency and current density in electrochemical reduction of CO2 need to be further improved to meet the requirements for practical applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) offers an important pathway for renewable energy storage and fuels production. It still remains a challenge in designing highly selective, energy-efficient, robust, and cost-effective electrocatalysts to facilitate this kinetically slow process. Metal-free carbon-based materials have features of low cost, good electrical conductivity, renewability, diverse structure, and tunability in surface chemistry. In particular, surface functionalization of carbon materials, for example by doping with heteroatoms, enables access to unique active site architectures for CO2 adsorption and activation, leading to interesting catalytic performances in ECR. We aim to provide a comprehensive review of this category of metal-free catalysts for ECR, providing discussions and/or comparisons among different nonmetallic catalysts, and also possible origin of catalytic activity. Fundamentals and some future challenges are also described.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction can produce valuable carbonaceous compounds that are in significant demand, due to its ability to decrease the accumulated atmospheric CO 2 and improve the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Considering the sluggish kinetics of CO 2 reduction reaction, the multielectron–proton transfer process, and the inevitable mixed reduction products, designing efficient and robust electrocatalysts that benefit from the structure–activity relationship is the focus to promote CO 2 conversion. In this review, various metal‐based materials are first classified and discussed in terms of their structural and elemental compositions for catalytic behaviors. Afterward, the most intrinsic microstructural/electronic effects as well as the influence of compositional alteration on the catalyst activity, selectivity, and stability are summarized. Additionally, recent attempts to develop the assigned electrochemical cells are surveyed and described from a technological point of view.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to fuels and chemicals provides a promising solution for renewable energy storage and utilization. Among the many possible reaction pathways, CO2 conversion to carbon monoxide (CO) is the first step in the synthesis of more complex carbon-based fuels and feedstocks, and holds great significance for the chemical industry. Herein, recent advances in heterogeneous catalysts for selective CO evolution from electrochemical reduction of CO2 are described. With Au catalysts as a paradigm, principles for catalyst design including size, morphology, and grain boundary densities tuning, surface modifications, as well as metal-support interaction are comprehensively summarized, which shed light on the development of other transition metal catalysts targeting efficient CO2-to-CO conversion. In addition, recently emerged novel materials including transition metal single-atom catalysts, which present significantly different catalytic behaviors compared to their bulk counterparts and thus open up many unexpected opportunities, are summarized. Furthermore, the technical aspects with respect to large-scale production of CO are presented, focusing on the full-cell design and implementation. Finally, short comments related to the future direction of real-word CO2 electrolysis for CO supply are provided in terms of catalyst optimization and technical breakthrough.
Boosting electrochemical CO2 reduction on ternary heteroatoms-doped porous carbon

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals using metal-free carbon catalysts is attractive, but single N-doped carbons suffer from poor efficiency (<90%) and low current density (<2 mA cm−2). Herein, we report a facile and scalable preparation of ternary heteroatoms (N, S, P)-doped carbon electrocatalyst to enhance electrochemical activity, because the multi-heteroatoms with different sizes and electronegativities can modulate the electronic properties to facilitate CO2 localization and provide abundant active sites with enhanced charge-carrier concentrations. It exhibits high activity toward CO2 electroreduction to CO activity with 92% CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) at −0.7 VRHE and low onset overpotential of 270 mV. The promising potential of industrial application is manifested by the high current density of 245 mA cm−2 and stable FECO above 98% in a flow-cell configuration. Moreover, in-situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that *COOH is the key intermediate in CO2-to-CO conversion. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of N, S, and P heteroatoms boosts the catalytic activity by greatly decreasing the free energy barrier of *COOH formation. Furthermore, the morphological benefit of hierarchically porous structures plays a synergistic role in improving the CO2 reduction activity.

Abstract:Rational electrocatalyst design understanding for the reduction of CO2 from atomic‐, nanoscale‐, and microscale‐level in this review are highlighted. In combination with advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations, this paper aims to establish the possible electrocatalyst structure–function relationship, providing guidelines for future study direction. The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising route to convert CO2 into value‐added chemicals and fuels by utilizing renewable electrical energy, mitigating the greenhouse effect and depletion of fossil fuels for sustainability. Electrocatalyst plays a critical role in CO2RR whereas their rational design for achieving high activity, durability, and selectivity toward specific products confronts great challenge. In this review, rational CO2RR electrocatalyst design as well as essential understanding of nanomaterials in atomic‐, nanoscale‐, and microscale‐level are highlighted. Besides, basic concepts and setup factors related to CO2RR are systematically outlined to provide a clear and comprehensive understanding as guidance. More importantly, the authors discuss and try to uncover the electrocatalyst structure–function relationship with the assistance of electrokinetic studies, in situ characterizations, and computational techniques. Finally, current challenges and prospects are offered to shed light on future design of advanced CO2RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The worldwide unrestrained emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused serious environmental pollution and climate change issues. For the sustainable development of human civilization, it is very desirable to convert CO2 to renewable fuels through clean and economical chemical processes. Recently, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is regarded as a prospective pathway for the recycling of carbon resource and the generation of sustainable fuels. In this review, recent research advances in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The referred electrocatalysts are divided into different classes, including metal-organic complexes, metals, metal alloys, inorganic metal compounds and carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials. Moreover, the selective formation processes of different reductive products, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-), monoxide carbon (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), etc. are introduced in detail, respectively. Owing to the limited energy efficiency, unmanageable selectivity, low stability, and indeterminate mechanisms of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, there are still many tough challenges need to be addressed. In view of this, the current research trends to overcome these obstacles in CO2 electroreduction field are summarized. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of CO2 electroreduction.
