Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:CuInS2 nanocrystals were synthesized by one-pot thermolysis of a mixture solution of metal chlorides, 1-dodecanethiol (DT) and oleic acid in noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene. Interestingly, in this synthesis, different structures and shapes were obtained by simply varying the dosage of DT. At a low dosage of DT, wurtzite nanoplates formed in the initial reaction stage and then they further grew to nanoplates with wurtzite-zincblende polytypism as the reaction proceeded. On the contrary, a high dosage of DT produced zincblende nanoparticles. The formation processes of nanoplates and nanoparticles were studied and a growth mechanism was proposed. Our research will aid in solution-synthesis of ternary chalcogenide nanocrystals and the development of their optoelectronic devices.
Non-Injection Synthesis of CuInS2/ZnS Nanocrystals and the Effect of Hydrophilic Surface Modification on Photoluminescence

Abstract:We proposed a facile non-injection method for the synthesis of CuInS2/ZnS nanocrystals by using metal acetylacetonate complexes as the universal metal precursors in 1-dodecanethiol, and 1-dodecanethiol was used both as solvent and the only source of sulfur. This method eliminated the use of phosphines for the preparation of copper and indium precursors. ZnS shell was introduced to enhance the photoluminescence and stability of the as-synthesized CuInS2 nanocrystals. This shell growth process not only increased the quantum yields of CuInS2 nanocrystals but also provided an effective way to continuously tune the emissions from similar to 665 nm to similar to 575 nm. This non-toxic core shell system could be easily transferred into water by surface modification treatment with bioconnpatible carboxylic acid groups, which dropped the emission intensity for about 30% while this water-soluble characteristic made such nanoscrystals meet the basic requirement for biological imaging applications. We also proved the feasibility of such method for the synthesis of other ternary I-III-VI2 nanocrystals such as CuInSe2 and AgInSe2.

Abstract:Cu-doped ZnCdS/ZnS (Cu:ZnxCd1−xS/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized by a facile one-pot noninjection approach to investigate the composition-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties. The resulting monodisperse Cu:ZnxCd1−xS/ZnS QDs exhibit a tuned band gap energy Eg from 2.84 to 3.13 eV and a wide dopant emission band from 630 to 569 nm when Zn content x increases from 0.2 to 0.5. Furthermore, the decreasing FWHM with increasing Zn content reveals the emission mainly arises from the recombination of electrons in conductor band with localized holes in Cu-related T2 and E level. With Zn content increasing in ZnxCd1−xS host, the relatively perfect lattice match between ZnxCd1−xS core and ZnS shell reduces the PL lifetime and increased PL quantum yield. The temperature dependent PL behavior suggests that the thermal stability of Cu:ZnxCd1−xS/ZnS QDs is enhanced because the interface nonradiative centers are efficiently suppressed by increasing Zn content.

Abstract:In order to improve the chemical stability of quantum dots in application for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, we prepared CdxZn1-xTe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with type-II structure by an aqueous phase process using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizing agent. We investigated the composition of Zn and Cd in CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the cubic zinc combines structure of CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots. In addition, we investigated the optical absorption, fluorescence emission and emission decay of samples, indicating that the energy level of ternary quantum dots can be controlled by both size and composition. Therefore, quantum dots with type-II structure can be prepared easily, which is beneficial to the improvement of fluorescence lifetime. We find that there are two decay processes in the emission decay kinetics of CdxZn1-xTe and core/shell CdxZn1-xTe-CdS quantum dots. The average lifetime of the photoexcited carriers is 24.07 ns and 39.80 ns, respectively.

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:We investigate the stability of ZnSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) based on density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations combined with photoluminescence (PL) and x-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy of as-synthesized and annealed QDs. The results demonstrate that core/shell interfaces in ZnSe/ZnS QDs are thermodynamically unstable. Under low-temperature annealing, the intermixing of S and Se atoms leads to alloying of the pure ZnSe core and ZnS shells. Upon high-temperature annealing, the degradation of the PL properties of the QDs also is observed.

Abstract:Coated CdSe/CdS nanocrystals have been synthesized through a new reaction routine in micelle solution. High resolution transmission electron microscope image demonstrated the monodispersity and core-shell structure of CdSe/CdS nanocrystals. Photooxidation experiments shown that by coating with a wider bandgap material CdS, the surface states of CdSe cores could be decreased and the photo-instability of their luminescence spectrum could be reduced. This phenomena were temporary interpreted that lack of carriers at the outlayer surface reduced photooxidation degradation of CdSe/CdS nanocrystals.

Abstract:CuInZnS quantum dots (CIZS QDs) were prepared via reflux method in aqueous solution using CuCl2·2H2O, InCl3·4H2O, Zn(OAc)2·2H2O and Na2S·9H2O as raw materials, l-glutathione (GSH) and sodiumcitrate (SC) as stabilizing agents, respectively. The effects of off-stoichiometry (Cu/In and Zn/Cu ratios) on the crystal structure and morphology were systematically studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and the relative optical properties were also investigated by absorption and fluorescence spectra. The as-prepared water-dispersible CIZS QDs were around 3-4nm and possessed the tetragonal chalcopyrite crystal structure. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of QDs was significantly increased with decreasing the Cu/In ratio. Compared with the Cu/In ratio variation, changing Zn/Cu ratio was an effective strategy to realize a more uniform irradiation and a wide range of emission wavelength tunability.
Research on CuInS2 Thin Films Prepared by One-step Electrodeposition

Abstract:CIS thin films with different Cu/In ratio were prepared intentionally by one-step electrodeposition technique on ITO glass substrates,respectively.The thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM),energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS),X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer.The influence of Cu/In ratio in precursors on crystalline and optical property of the films was discussed.The results reveal that as-deposited Cu-In-S films with different Cu/In ratio obtained by the optimized parameter of the solution composition pH and the deposition conditions,have smooth,compact,crack-free surface and adhere to substrates.Annealing treatment can improve crystalline of the CIS thin films.The size of average grains increases with the Cu/In ratio of the as-deposited films.Annealed films with a band gap of about 1.47 eV are chalcopyrite phase and have preferably optical property.

Abstract:Type-II Cu2S-CdS core/shell (including Cu2S/CdS and CdS/Cu2S) semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). which call produce efficient spatial separation of electrons and holes between the core and shell, were Successfully synthesized. The results from absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and PL lifetime measurements all confirmed the formation of the type-II core/shell NCs. The emission wavelength of the type-II Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs can be readily tuned between 515 nm and 760 inn through two methods: core size control and shell thickness control. The highest PL quantum yield that the Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs reached was similar to 12% by controlling the shell thickness, while the core Cu2S nanocrystals had no PL at all. The PL decay data revealed that Cu2S/CdS NCs had a dual exponential characteristic and the PL emission with the longest lifetime (more than 1400 ns) occupied more than 85%. After overcoating ZnS, a Cu2S/CdS/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 structure was formed, which resulted in a blue-shift of the emission wavelength. Using the synthesis strategy of Cu2S/CdS, CdS/Cu2S type-II NCs also produced tunable emissions in the visible range.
Study of the Partial Ag-to-Zn Cation Exchange in AgInS2/ZnS Nanocrystals

Abstract:AgInS2-ZnS (AIZS) nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized using a simple one-step approach by heating a Ag/In/Zn/S solution to 210 degrees C providing highly tunable photoluminescence (PL). The incorporation of Zn even at low temperatures (similar to 150 degrees C) and the increased cation exchange of silver by zinc at higher temperatures strongly influence the optical properties of the resulting NCs. The correlation between synthesis parameters and resulting optical properties provided insights on the growth and stability of ternary and quaternary semiconductors. Systematic investigation with time-resolved spectroscopy showed distinguishable PL behaviors between developing and fully grown AIZS NCs. Attempts to coat as-prepared AgInS2 NCs resulted in the same PL behavior as the one-step reaction product indicating that Zn readily exchanges with Ag ions even when not directly incorporated in the initial reaction mixture. Even with a low amount of zinc, the fully grown AIZS NCs showed improved PL QYs and single exponential decay behavior with long PL lifetimes. Control of the optical properties of these NCs makes them potentially useful for applications in photovoltaics and bioimaging particularly in light of their nontoxicity.

Abstract:Copper indium sulfide (CuInS2) is a ternary A(I)B(III)X(VI)2-type semiconductor featuring a direct bandgap with a high absorption coefficient. In attempts to explore their practical applications, nanoscale CuInS2 has been synthesized with crystal sizes down to the quantum confinement regime. The merits of CuInS2 nanocrystals (NCs) include wide emission tunability, a large Stokes shift, long decay time, and eco-friendliness, making them promising candidates in photoelectronics and photovoltaics. Over the past two decades, advances in wet-chemistry synthesis have achieved rational control over cation-anion reactivity during the preparation of colloidal CuInS2 NCs and post-synthesis cation exchange. The precise nano-synthesis coupled with a series of hybridization strategies has given birth to a library of CuInS2 NCs with highly customizable photophysical properties. This review article focuses on the recent development of CuInS2 NCs enabled by advanced synthetic and hybridization techniques. We show that the state-of-the-art CuInS2 NCs play significant roles in optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Abstract:High-efficiency photoluminescence quaternary hexagon Zn–Cu–In–S (ZCIS) nanoplatelets (NPls) have been synthesized by a two-step cation exchange method, which starts with the In2S3 NPls followed by the addition of Cu and Zn. It is the first time that In2S3 NPls are used as templates to synthesize ZCIS NPls. In this paper, the reaction temperature of In2S3 is essential for the formation of NPls. The photoluminescence wavelength of NPls can be tuned by adjusting the temperature of Cu addition. To enhance the stability of the resulting NPls and to improve their optical properties, we introduced Zn2+ and obtained ZCIS NPls by cation exchange on the surface. It is worth noting that the obtained ZCIS NPls show a shorter fluorescence lifetime than other ternary copper sulfide-based NPls. This work provides a new way to synthesize high-efficiency, nontoxic, and no byproduct ZCIS NPls.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Copper indium sulfide quantum dots (QDs) have attracted substantial attention in recent years due to environmental issues and diverse applications. We report the synthesis and characterization of copper-zinc-indium-sulfide (CZIS) QDs and CZIS treated with excess Zn2+ at different temperatures, denoted here as CZIS/ZnS 100 and CZIS/ZnS 200. Zn2+ can diffuse into the lattice by an exchange-cation reaction, replacing Cu+ and In3+. We employed transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy to study the role of Zn2+ in the lattice. The data were treated by global analysis, which yielded the decay-associated spectra (DAS). Through DAS and second-order derivative absorption spectra, we could for the first time isolate the excitonic contribution from the metal–ligand conduction band charge transfer (MLCBCT) absorption in the TA spectrum, finding the hole localization lifetime by its spectral and dynamical features. The hole localization lifetime increases from 0.3 to 1.7 ps by increasing the Zn2+ concentration. We also measured the electron-trapping constants to be dozens of picoseconds and nonradiative recombination larger than 1 ns. Finally, we concluded that suppression of the electron-trapping rate is not the only process responsible for increasing the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY); however, suppression of this process is important since it is the first step of the nonradiative recombination pathway. Abstract:Type I core/shell quantum dots (QDs) have been shown to improve the stability and conversion efficiency of QD-sensitized solar cells compared to core only QDs. To understand how the shell thickness affects the solar cell performance, its effects on interfacial charge separation and recombination kinetics are investigated. These kinetics are measured in CdSe/ZnS type I core/shell QDs adsorbed with anthroquinone molecules (as electron acceptor) by time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. We show that the charge separation and recombination rates decrease exponentially with the shell thickness (d), K(d) = k(0)e(-beta d), with exponential decay factors beta of 0.35 +/- 0.03 per angstrom and 0.91 +/- 0.14 per angstrom, respectively. Model calculations show that these trends can be attributed to the exponential decrease of the 1S electron and hole densities at the OD surface with the shell thickness. The much steeper decrease in charge recombination rate results from a larger hole effective mass (than electron) in the ZnS shell. This finding suggests possible ways of optimizing the charge separation yield and lifetime by controlling the thickness and nature of the shell materials.
