Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. Solar Si photovoltaic waste possesses good purity and high output. Using it as the raw material for battery anodes can synchronously solve the problem of solid waste pollution and enable high energy density LIBs. A critical issue impeding the practical application of Si is the undesirable side reactions at the electrolyte-particle interface and the resulting increase in impedance during cycling. Herein, a Si–P core shell structure with chemical bonding at the Si–P interface is fabricated through a simple mechanical alloying reaction between red P and solar Si photovoltaic waste. The P nanoshell with thickness within 15 nm converts to Li 3 P during the initial lithiation process and maintains its phase on cycling. The as-formed Li 3 P nanolayer functions as a stable, ionically conductive protective layer that reduces the direct contact between Si and electrolytes, and thus suppresses undesired side reactions. The Si–P nanocomposite exhibits stable electrochemical cycling with a high reversible capacity of 1,178 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1,200 mA g −1 , as well as excellent rate capability (912 mAh g −1 at 2 C). With 15 wt% addition to graphite, a graphite/Si–P hybrid electrode shows a high overall reversible specific capacity of 447 mAh g −1 and 88.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles at high areal capacity of 2.64 mAh cm −2 at 100 mA g −1 , indicating its promise as a drop-in anode in practical LIBs.

Abstract:In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) offers a good way to investigate the structural evolution during lithiation and delithiation processes. In this paper, the dynamical morphological evolution of 3D-line-structured/unstructured Si/C composite electrodes was observed by in situ SEM. The investigation revealed the microstructural origin of large charge capacity for 3D-line-structured anodes. Based on this proposed mechanism, a coarse optimization of 3D-line-structured anodes was proposed. These results shed light on the unique advantages of using an in situ SEM technique when studying realistic bulk batteries and designing 3D electrode structures.
Advanced Inorganic Lithium Metasilicate Binder for High-Performance Silicon Anode.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered a high-capacity anode material with potential for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, the commercial application of Si anode is seriously hindered by huge volume variation (>300%) and limited Li+ diffusion ability. Herein, lithium metasilicate (LS), a novel inorganic binder, was innovatively developed to accommodate these challenges. Favorable compatibility is observed between the LS binder and Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) due to the existence of Si element within the LS skeleton. The interaction of the LS binder and SiNPs leads to a strong adhesion effect, enhancing the cycling stability of Si anode. The Si electrode with the LS binder presented an average discharge capacity of 2123 mAh/g at 0.84 A/g after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the presence of the Li+ transport channel within the LS binder enhances Li+ diffusion ability within Si anode. As a result, the average discharge capacity reaches 663 mAh/g at 8.4 A/g. This work thus explored new inorganic binder design approaches for Si anode, contributing to the advancement of high-performance Si anode.
Building High Performance Silicon–oxygen and Silicon–sulfur Battery by In-Situ Lithiation of Fibrous Si/C Anode

Abstract:Using Li metal-free anodes for lithium-ion oxygen and lithium-ion sulfur batteries is considered as a promising solution to resolve the hazard of Li metal anode. Although Si anode exhibits high capacity and low electrochemical potential, it cannot match with oxygen (or sulfur) cathode, because both lack cycleable lithium ions. In this work, a free-standing and fibrous Si/C anode is prepared by electrospinning and its simple but effective lithiation is proposed. When assembling the cells, the free-standing Si/C anode was put between mass-controlled lithium metal foil and separator, and then the Si/C anode could be lithiated after adding electrolytes. By optimizing a LiFSI based ether electrolyte, the Si/C anode could achieve good cycleablity comparable to that in carbonate electrolytes. The lithiated Si-O-2 cells exhibit better cycling stability than the lithium oxygen cells with gel polymer electrolye. Moreover, because both Si anode and S@pPAN cathode are compatible with carbonate electrolytes, exceptional cycling performance has been achieved for the lithiated Si-S cells. This simple method could pave the way to commercial applications of lithium-ion oxygen and lithium-ion sulfur batteries. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Metallurgically Lithiated SiOx Anode with High Capacity and Ambient Air Compatibility.

Abstract:A common issue plaguing battery anodes is the large consumption of lithium in the initial cycle as a result of the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase followed by gradual loss in subsequent cycles. It presents a need for prelithiation to compensate for the loss. However, anode prelithiation faces the challenge of high chemical reactivity because of the low anode potential. Previous efforts have produced prelithiated Si nanoparticles with dry air stability, which cannot be stabilized under ambient air. Here, we developed a one-pot metallurgical process to synthesize LixSi/Li2O composites by using low-cost SiO or SiO2 as the starting material. The resulting composites consist of homogeneously dispersed LixSi nanodomains embedded in a highly crystalline Li2O matrix, providing the composite excellent stability even in ambient air with 40% relative humidity. The composites are readily mixed with various anode materials to achieve high first cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE) of >100% or serve as an excellent anode material by itself with stable cyclability and consistently high CEs (99.81% at the seventh cycle and ∼99.87% for subsequent cycles). Therefore, LixSi/Li2O composites achieved balanced reactivity and stability, promising a significant boost to lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Li-O2 battery is the leading next-generation battery system, which is known for its extremely high theoretic specific energy. However, the Li metal used in Li-O2 batteries suffers from low Li utilization and safety hazards. In this work, as an alternative to Li anode, Li21Si5 powders, which are synthesized by an easy mechanical process, are incorporated into a Li-ion oxygen battery. The electrochemical property of the prepared battery and its cycling stability are investigated. Without electrochemical prelithiation, the pursuit of Li-Si alloy anodes in this study provides an easy and scalable strategy for preparing Li-ion oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiOx, x ∼ 1) has emerged as a highly promising candidate for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity and suitable working potential. Nevertheless, the formation of a large quantity of irreversible products, such as Li2O and lithium silicates, during the initial lithiation process results in a low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of SiOx, which is a significant impediment to its commercial application. To overcome this limitation, two lithium aromatic complexes, namely, lithium-naphthalene-2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran (N-LAC) and lithium-biphenyl-2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran (B-LAC), with a low redox potential are used to pre-lithiate SiOx anodes. The differences in lithiation kinetics and efficacy of the two LAC solutions are identified and assessed by scrutinizing the pre-lithiation process of SiOx materials. It is revealed that both pre-lithiation agents produce solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films on the material surface enriched with substances such as LiF, Li2CO3, and ROCO2Li, but the LiF content in the SEI of the N-LAC pre-lithiated electrode is significantly higher. Furthermore, the surface roughness of the N-LAC pre-lithiated electrode is lower, and the horizontal distribution of mechanical properties and surface potential tend to be more homogeneous, even during cycling, at approximately the same degree of lithiation. The results indicate that the N-LAC solutions not only improve the ICE of the SiOx material but also optimize the interfacial and structural stability of the SiOx electrode. When the pre-lithiated SiOx anode is paired with lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials, the energy density and ICE are significantly improved compared to the cell using pristine SiOx anode.

Abstract:SiOx is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its smaller volume expansion and longer lifespan than silicon. However, its development is severely hampered by the sluggish reaction kinetics and large volume changes. Herein, a facile and scalable synthesis of exfoliated N-doped carbon nanoslices supported SiOx (SiOx/NCS) is developed by a melamine assisted ball milling and annealing procedure. The principle of melamine in exfoliating graphite is demonstrated by contrast experiments and theoretical calculations. It is found NCS acts as matrix to enhance the reaction kinetics and accommodate the volume changes which contributes to the significant improvements of cycling performance and rate capability. The SiOx/NCS anode exhibits ultrastable cycling performance (∼900 mAh g-1 over 600 cycles at 1 A g-1) and superior rate capability (565 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1). At a high mass loading of 3.3 mg cm-2, an ultrahigh areal capacity of 2.4 mAh cm-2 is obtained after 200 cycles. Moreover, the potential application of SiOx/NCS anode in LIBs is also confirmed by the good performance of SiOx/NCS//NCM111 full cells.

Abstract:The rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries suffer from not only the low practical capacity and high overpotential at the oxygen cathode but also the low lithium utilization and dendrite growth of the Li metal. In this work, by coupling the dual mediator catholyte and the carbonate-based anolyte for the high specific capacity Si anode, we propose a hybrid electrolyte design for the fabrication of Li-ion O-2 batteries. A single-ion-conducting lithiated Nafion membrane is introduced to bridge the two electrolyte systems. Benefiting from the restraint of mediator shuttling and the uniform solid electrolyte interface film of silicon anode, the hybrid electrolyte Li-ion O-2 battery exhibits high reversible capacity, low overpotential, and improved cycling stability. Beyond the Li-ion O-2 battery, the hybrid electrolyte design shows great potential for the development of stable battery systems with high energy efficiency.
A Hybrid Structure to Improve Electrochemical Performance of SiO Anode Materials in Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The wide utilization of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) prompts extensive research on the anode materials with large capacity and excellent stability. Despite the attractive electrochemical properties of pure Si anodes outperforming other Si-based materials, its unsafety caused by huge volumetric expansion is commonly admitted. Silicon monoxide (SiO) anode is advantageous in mild volume fluctuation, and would be a proper alternative if the low initial columbic efficiency and conductivity can be ameliorated. Herein, a hybrid structure composed of active material SiO particles and carbon nanofibers (SiO/CNFs) is proposed as a solution. CNFs, through electrospun processes, serve as a conductive skeleton for SiO nanoparticles and enable SiO nanoparticles to be uniformly embedded in. As a result, the SiO/CNF electrochemical performance reaches a peak at 20% the mass ratio of SiO, where the retention rate reaches 73.9% after 400 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1, and the discharge capacity after stabilization and 100 cycles are 1.47 and 1.84 times higher than that of pure SiO, respectively. A fast lithium-ion transport rate during cycling is also demonstrated as the corresponding diffusion coefficient of the SiO/CNF reaches ~8 × 10-15 cm2 s-1. This SiO/CNF hybrid structure provides a flexible and cost-effective solution for LIBs and sheds light on alternative anode choices for industrial battery assembly.

Abstract:An in situ pre‐lithiation strategy is achieved by a simple thermal treatment of the lithium salt of the silsesquioxane trisilanolate, which also results in the formation of dual carbon encapsulation of SiOC nanodomains. In practical application, the materials prepared have good electrochemical properties and cycling stability. Among silicon‐based anode family for Li‐ion battery technology, SiOx, a nonstoichiometric silicon suboxide holds the potential for significant near‐term commercial impact. In this context, this study mainly focuses on demonstrating an innovative SiOx@C anode design that adopts a pre‐lithiation strategy based on in situ pyrolysis of Li‐salt of silsesquioxane trisilanolate without the need for lithium metal or active lithium compounds and creates dual carbon encapsulation of SiOC nanodomains by simply one‐step thermal treatment. This ingenious design ensures the pre‐lithiation process and pre‐lithiation material with high‐environmental stability. Moreover, phenyl‐rich organosiloxane clusters and polyacrylonitrile polymers are expected to serve as internal and external carbon source, respectively. The formation of an interpenetrating and continuous carbon matrix network would not only synergistically offer an improved electrochemical accessibility of active sites but also alleviate the volume expansion effect during cycling. As a result, this new type of anode delivered a high reversible capacity, remarkable cycle stability as well as excellent high‐rate capability. In particular, the L2‐SiOx@C material has a high initial coulomb efficienc of 80.4% and, after 500 cycles, a capacity retention as high as 97.5% at 0.5 A g−1 with a reversible specific capacity of 654.5 mA h g−1.

Abstract:Silicon oxides (SiOx) have been widely recognized as a highly potential material for anodes in advanced lithium-ion batteries due to their remarkable reversible capacity. Nonetheless, the commercial utilization of SiOx anodes is still impeded by their low inherent electrical conductivity and substantial volumetric fluctuations. Herein, a layer-by-layer structure, composited of two-dimensional (2D) SiOx and nitrogen-doped carbon, is fabricated as a robust lithium-ion battery anode via the thermal pyrolysis of in situ formed siloxene/polyaniline. Nitrogen-doped carbon is distributed across both the interlayer and surface of 2D SiOx, yielding the composite anode with a stable electrode interface, superior structural integrity, and enhanced electrical conductivity. Therefore, the optimized 2D SiOx/nitrogen-doped carbon anode presents high reversible capacity (957.8 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), ideal rate capability, and excellent cycling performance (696.4 mAh/g after 300 cycles at 1.0 A/g and 217.5 mAh/g over 1000 cycles at 5.0 A/g). This work provides a novel and simple approach to making 2D SiOx anodes hybridize with carbonaceous materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Three-Dimensional Porous Si and SiO2 with In Situ Decorated Carbon Nanotubes As Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:A high-capacity Si anode is always accompanied by very large volume expansion and structural collapse during the lithium-ion insertion/extraction process. To stabilize the structure of the Si anode, magnesium vapor thermal reduction has been used to synthesize porous Si and SiO2 (pSS) particles, followed by in situ growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in pSS pores through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy have shown that the final product (pSS/CNTs) possesses adequate void space intertwined by uniformly distributed CNTs and inactive silica in particle form. pSS/CNTs with such an elaborate structural design deliver improved electrochemical performance, with better coulombic efficiency (70% at the first cycle), cycling capability (1200 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles), and rate capability (1984, 1654, 1385, 1072, and 800 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 A g-1, respectively), compared to pSS and porous Si/CNTs. These merits of pSS/CNTs are attributed to the capability of void space to absorb the volume changes and that of the silica to confine the excessive lithiation expansion of the Si anode. In addition, CNTs have interwound the particles, leading to significant enhancement of electronic conductivity before and after Si-anode pulverization. This simple and scalable strategy makes it easy to expand the application to manufacturing other alloy anode materials.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are a promising class of rechargeable Li batteries with a potentially very high achievable energy density. One of the major challenges for Li-O2 batteries is the high charge overpotential, which results in a low energy efficiency. In this work size-selected subnanometer Ir clusters are used to investigate cathode materials that can help control lithium superoxide formation during discharge, which has good electronic conductivity needed for low charge potentials. It is found that Ir particles can lead to lithium superoxide formation as the discharge product with Ir particle sizes of ∼1.5 nm giving the lowest charge potentials. During discharge these 1.5 nm Ir nanoparticles surprisingly evolve to larger ones while incorporating Li to form core-shell structures with Ir3Li shells, which probably act as templates for growth of lithium superoxide during discharge. Various characterization techniques including DEMS, Raman, titration, and HRTEM are used to characterize the LiO2 discharge product and the evolution of the Ir nanoparticles. Density functional calculations are used to provide insight into the mechanism for formation of the core-shell Ir3Li particles. The in situ formed Ir3Li core-shell nanoparticles discovered here provide a new direction for active cathode materials that can reduce charge overpotentials in Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:In this study, a novel B-containing SiOx composite is demonstrated with a remarkably improved cycling performance as a stable anode material for lithium-ion batteries. A multielement, multiphase, B-containing SiOx composite is successfully prepared by heating a mixture of SiO and LiBH4 to 500 degrees C. The resultant product consists mainly of amorphous/nanocrystalline Si, SiOx, B, B2O3, and Li2SiO3. The in situ formed amorphous B, B2O3, and nanocrystalline Li2SiO3 mostly remain at the surface of the product particles, providing a remarkable enhancement in the mechanical properties of the Si/SiOx active materials. This feature provides good accommodation for the volume change during lithiation/delithiation, consequently depressing the pulverization and fracture of the Si/SiOx active materials. As a result, the cycling stability of the prepared B-containing SiOx composite is significantly improved. The sample prepared from SiO-0.3LiBH(4) delivers reversible capacity of 1186 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 100 deep cycles, corresponding to the capacity retention of 81%. This outcome is more than two times higher than that of pristine SiO (33.9%).
A self-driven alloying/dealloying approach to nanostructuring micro-silicon for high-performance lithium-ion battery anodes

Abstract:The nanostructuring of low-cost micro-sized silicon (mSi) is paramount to achieve the practical viability of deploying high-capacity Si anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Conventional methods for converting mSi to nanoporous Si (nSi) involve low product yield, toxic chemical reagents, high energy consumption, etc. Herein, we report a self-driven alloying/dealloying approach to converting mSi to nSi in molten salts, where mSi alloys with Mg powders to generate Mg2Si and, subsequently, the Mg2Si dealloys in a Mg2Si||Sn primary battery with the production of nSi at the negative electrode and the liquid Mg-Sn alloy at the positive electrode. Finally, the Mg-Sn decomposes to Mg gas and liquid Sn through a vacuum-distillation process. Taking the micro-sized Si kerf waste as an example, the pyrolytic carbon-coated (PCC) nSi delivers a capacity of 1080.2 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 1000 cycles with a capacity retention rate of 83.7%. Furthermore, a fabricated PCC-nSi-2||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) full cell demonstrates a high energy density of 466 Wh kg−1 as well as good cycling stability for 200 cycles. The improved Li-storage performance is attributed to the synergetic effects of the nanoporous Si and carbon coating. Overall, the self-driven nanostructuring approach along with the vacuum-distillation process maintains a high utilization of mSi, eliminates the use of toxic reagents, and keeps a closed-loop material circle, and thus offers an efficient and green pathway to valorize various mSi for making enhanced lithium-storage anodes.

Abstract:Due to its high theoretical specific capacity, micron-sized silicon monoxide (SiO) is regarded as one of the most competitive anode materials for lithium-ion batteries with high specific energy density. However, originating from the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and large volume expansion, its large-scale application is seriously hindered. Herein, an easy-to-implement solid-state pre-lithiation method synergized with the magnesiothermic reduction process was performed to enhance the ICE of SiO and a common bimetallic hydride was used as a prelithiation reagent. Moreover, the effects of different pre-lithiation reagent amounts on the physical and electrochemical properties of SiO x are investigated. Notably, the SiO x -LA@C composite anchored by in-situ generated LiAl(SiO 3 ) 2 shows a more stable microstructure and excellent electrochemical properties, which delivers an ultrahigh ICE of 89.4 % and an excellent initial capacity of 1864.4 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, the full cells were successfully assembled by using the prepared anodes, which exhibit relatively stable cycle performance over 150 cycles. This work suggests a safe and feasible route to enhance the ICE of SiO x for the applicable SiO-based anode materials.
