Abstract:As an important technical basis of predictive maintenance,lifetime prognostics has been paid more and more attention in recent years.Real-time reliability evaluation and prediction is an effective solution to lifetime prognostics.This paper summarizes the real-time reliability evaluation and prediction methods for engineering systems,and investigates some applications of these methods.Some open problems in this field are also discussed,and future research directions are pointed out.

Abstract:Most of mechanical equipments have 3 states: normal, abnormal and failure. When the equipments are checked and diagnosed in abnormal, they will accept predictive maintenance. And if the equipments fail, they will accept failure repair. It is assumed that the predictive maintenance makes equipments "as good as new", while the failure repair does not makes equipment "as good as new". Monotone process is introduced to describe the case that failure repair does not makes equipment "as good as new". Under above assumption and others, reliability and check replacement policy of mechanical equipments are studied by using probability analysis and vector markov process method. The explicit expression of the reliability index and average profit rate (i.e., the long-run average profit per unit time) are derived and the rule of feasibility for the optimal check replacement policy under the largest average profit rate is obtained. The corresponding optimal check replacement policy can be determined analytically or numerically. The research on the actual example shows that the result can provide some scientific basis for improving the reliability, safety and economic profit of mechanical equipments.

Abstract:Due to the propagation, amplification, and concatenation in a failure process, the reliabilities of repairable multistate complex mechanical systems (RMCMSs) may be affected by a significant fluctuation due to a small exception associated with a reliability indicator. Focused on the problems arising from the lack of propagation relationships among fault modes, functional components, and failure causes in conventional reliability models, a novel framework for reliability modelling is proposed to comprehensively analyse the reliabilities of RMCMSs. First, the reliability models are abstracted as weighted and directed networks with five layers. Second, an improved failure mode and effects analysis (IFMEA) method combined with the D-number method and VIKOR approach is presented to determine the importance of reliability nodes. Third, a cut set of the reliability model is generated by any exception of a reliability indicator by considering the propagation relationships, and the reliability sensibility index is defined to characterize the fluctuations in system reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated in an actual reliability modelling application. As an intuitive method, the proposed framework inherits the advantages of conventional models but overcomes the drawbacks of these existing methods. Therefore, this method can be flexibly and efficiently used in the reliability modelling of RMCMSs. Moreover, the approach provides a foundation for comprehensive and dynamic reliability analysis and the failure mechanism mining of RMCMSs, and it can be used in other engineering applications.

Abstract:We consider reliability engineering in modern civil aviation industry, and the related engineering activities and methods. We consider reliability in a broad sense, referring to other system characteristics that are related to it, like availability, maintainability, safety and durability. We covered the entire lifecycle of the equipment, including reliability requirement identification, reliability analysis and design, verification and validation of reliability requirements (typically involved in the equipment design and development phase), quality assurance (which typically enters in the manufacturing phase), and fault diagnosis and prognosis and maintenance (which are connected to the operation phase). Lessons learnt from reliability engineering practices in civil aviation industry are given, which might serve as reference for reliability managers and engineers, also from other industries with high reliability requirements.

Abstract:Traditional reliability analysis has been using time to event data, degradation data, and recurrent event data, while the associated covariates tend to be simple and constant over time. Over the past years, we have witnessed the rapid development of sensor and wireless technology, which enables us to track how the product has been used and under which environmental conditions it has been used. Nowadays, we are able to collect richer information on covariates which provides opportunities for better reliability predictions. In this chapter, we first review recent development on statistical methods for reliability analysis. We then focus on introducing several specific methods that were developed for different types of reliability data with covariate information. Illustrations of those methods are also provided using examples from industry. Test planning is also an important part of reliability analysis. In addition to data analysis, we also provide a briefly review on recent developments of test planning and then focus on illustrating the sequential Bayesian design with an example of fatigue testing for polymer composites. The paper is concluded with some discussions and remarks.

Abstract:The correct and reasonable calculation of the structural reliability is the theoretical basis of the design, construction and use of the structure. The research is focused on the development of computing methods of reliability of structural members and system, and also points out the merits and problems of the existing methods with respect to the analysis of the present researches on structural reliability. Meanwhile, the summarization of the development and the existing problems on the reliability of time dependent structure has been provided. Furthermore, it proposes that correlation is the common problem in the computing of structural system reliability, and probes into the correlation coefficient of the calculation and the effects that correlation coefficient exerts on random variables and different systems. The conclusion shows that the specification of the adaptation range of calculation methods and reducing the effects of correlation coefficient contribute to the insurance of the structural safety.

Abstract:Nowadays software environment has been more and more open than before,the openness of environment has greatly influenced many existing software development techniques,including software reliability evaluation.Due to the weakness in efficiency,methods based on testing or simulations are not competent in the open environment;other methods,such as the state-based methods,are more efficient,but are unable to deal with the systems with concurrency.So this paper tries to put forward an improved reliability evaluation method which can do better in both efficiency and applicability.This method first describes how to use Petri nets as software architecture description;and then introduces a bottom-up way to calculate the system's reliability,the calculation process can be done efficiently and accurately,and can also deal with systems with concurrency,which can hardly be handled by existing methods;the method can also generate information reflecting the component's importance to the whole system,which can make software reliability evaluation play a more important role in software development.

Abstract:Radical Maintenance (RM) takes the root causes of failures as executive objects to make maintenance decisions. A Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is carried out on the function failure of equipment to perform RM and to create a maintenance plan using the combined methods of Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Evaluation criteria and matrixes of criticality are used to evaluate the criticality level of failure modes. Moreover, Minimum Cut Sets (MCS) and importance calculation are applied to analyze the fault tree quantitatively. Based on our research, the concept and the analysis process of Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) considering RM are proposed and then applied to an actual engineering project in the petrochemical industry. The results of the application are presented through a maintenance strategy based on the project analysis by establishing the evaluation criteria and matrixes of criticality for petrochemical rotating machines and a fault tree of compressor vibrations. The direct causes of the induction of vibration faults in rotating machinery are classified according to the fault mechanism and frequency domain features in this paper. The research shows that using RM in the traditional RCM can help assign maintenance resources rationally and improve the quality of maintenance strategies.

Abstract:Software system reliability is a hot research topic in the field of software engineering.From the three factors of system reliability,this paper identifies five classes of reliability concerns for the Problem Frames(PF) Approach.This paper also presents five reliability enhancement patterns for each reliability concern.Reliability enhancement patterns are used to incorporate reliability requirements into the process of problem analysis explicitly,extend the boundary of problems and refine machine specifications in order to improve the reliability of the software systems.A supporting tool is also built.It helps system analysts to identify reliability requirements and use the reliability enhancement patterns correctly.Finally,a bank account management problem is used to show the feasibility of our work.

Abstract:As the core foundation of reliability engineering and one of the most crucial aspects of general quality, reliability has been attracting increasing attention from industry and academia. Numerous publications on reliability analysis (RA) have appeared in academic journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. However, there has not been a systematic summary that covers RA data, models, methods, indicators, and software comprehensively. To fill this gap, this paper analyzed the challenges and the state of the art, as well as determined the future prospects for research on RA. This paper introduces the features of modern complex electromechanical systems (CES), then summarizes the current challenges to the RA of CES. Next, it reviews the latest developments, such as reliability theories, models, methods, and software, then summarizes and compares their advantages and limitations. Finally, it discusses future prospects from the perspectives of reliability data, modeling, decoupling, evaluation indicators, and timely prediction. It is expected that this paper would serve as an introduction to RA for researchers new to this field and as a summary of the current frontiers of RA for experienced researchers.

Abstract:According to the type,structure,operating and maintenance characteristic difference of process industry equipment,the evaluation technology of Reliability Centered Maintenance for Process Industry is studied.A kind of dynamic Reliability Centered Maintenance decision-making system which integrated risk evaluation,condition monitoring,performance check,professional management,archive management together is developed,which is based on information as main resources and health condition monitoring as the decision-making basis.Risk assessment technology is applied to form maintenance decision-making,such as to determine the priority maintenance level,to optimize maintenance content,and to determine the right maintenance time.Condition monitoring serves as a tool to diagnosis equipment fault and to predict fault development,and used to determine prediction maintenance tasks.Performance indicators used to quantify the frequency and fault consequences of key parts fault,to determine the optimal maintenance period of key parts and quantitative dynamic risk,and thus to determine equipment preventive maintenance task content;Professional management is the link to implement maintenance decision-making and maintenance task optimization.The designed system has been applied in certain refinery plant in China,which realized quantitative risk assessment and maintenance decision making,and maintenance decision-making level is proven;the safety,reliability and availability are ensured.
