Abstract:An iron-catalyzed coupling reaction of methylarenes with thiols leading to thioesters has been developed. The reactions were carried out in water with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant and polyoxyethanyl α-tocopheryl sebacate (PTS) as the surfactant. The reaction medium is compatible with a series of functional groups and can be reused.

Abstract:Here, we describe an iron-catalyzed benzylic C–H thiolation of alkylarenes via photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge-transfer. The protocol features operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and the use of FeCl 3 as catalyst and thiols/disulfides as sulfur sources, which enables the transformation of diverse benzylic C–H bonds into C–S bonds with a high efficiency.

Abstract:The iron-catalyzed highly Markovnikovtype selective and enantioselective hydrosilylation of terminal aliphatic alkenes with good functional group tolerance is developed. This operationally simple protocol uses earth-abundant transition metal catalyst, readily available aliphatic alkenes and hydrosilanes to construct valuable chiral organosilanes with better than 99% ee in most cases. The chiral aliphatic alkan-2-ol and chiral dihydroxysilane as an analogue of ketone could be efficiently synthesized via further derivatization of chiral organosilanes without any racemization.

Abstract:An efficient Co-catalyzed hydro-difluoromethylthiolation/hydro-trifluoromethylthiolation reaction of unactivated alkenes was described. Both reactions were conducted at room temperature and a variety of common functional groups such as halogen, ester, aldehyde, enolizable ketone or ester, nitro or cyano group, sulfonate and carbamate were compatible with the reaction conditions. Radical cyclization and radical inhibitor experiments suggested that the reaction proceeds through a free radical process.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed highly anti-Markovnikov selective, enantioselective hydrosilylation of vinylcyclopropanes with PhSiH3 was reported for the preparation of valuable chiral allylic silanes via stereospecific C-C bond cleavage. Simultaneously, difficultly prepared chiral VCPs could be also obtained with moderate to excellent enantioselectivity via this kinetic resolution pathway. The chiral Z-allylic silanes could be converted to various chiral allylic derivatives. A possible mechanism via an iron-silyl species was proposed based on experimental and computational studies.

Abstract:Stereodefined polysubstituted alpha-(methoxycarbonyl) allylsilanes were synthesized through iron-catalyzed conjugate additions between 1-(trimethylsilyl) allene-1-carboxylates and Grignard reagents in good to excellent yields. The use of Et2O as solvent for Grignard reagents was found to be very important for the diastereoselectivity of the reaction. Applications of the prepared allylic silanes for the stereocontrolled synthesis of alpha, beta-alkenoates, a beta,gamma-alkenoate, and an allylic fluoride have been demonstrated.

Abstract:A highly efficient method to oxidize methylarenes to their corresponding acids with a reusable Cr catalyst was developed. The reaction can be carried out in water with 1 atm oxygen and K2S2O8 as cooxidants, proceeds under green and mild conditions, and is suitable for the oxidation of both electron-deficient and electron-rich methylarenes, including heteroaryl methylarenes, even at the gram level. The excellent result, together with its simplicity of operation and the ability to continuously reuse the catalyst, makes this new methodology environmentally benign and cost-effective. The generality of this methodology gives it the potential for use on an industrial scale. Differing from the accepted oxidation mechanism of toluene, GC-MS studies and DFT calculations have revealed that the key benzyl alcohol intermediate is formed under the synergetic effect of the chromium and molybdenum in the Cr catalyst, which can be further oxidized to afford benzaldehyde and finally benzoic acid.

Abstract:Ironing on hydroxyls Although iron-dependent enzymes efficiently hydroxylate aryl rings, this activity has proven hard to replicate with synthetic catalysts. Cheng et al . report that a disulfide ligand activates iron to catalyze carbon–hydrogen hydroxylation of a wide variety of arenes using hydrogen peroxide. The protocol can also cleanly functionalize phenols with an additional hydroxyl group, although unfunctionalized arenes react more rapidly, in contrast to conventional oxidative selectivity patterns. The authors showcase this complementary selectivity through hydroxylation of pharmaceuticals with complex substitution patterns. —JSY

Abstract:The synthesis of medicinally interesting aryldifluoromethylated compounds has drawn significant research attention in recent years. Herein, we report an unprecedented iron-mediated process for the selective defluorination of trifluoromethylarenes to achieve the 1,2-difluoroalkylthiolation of alkenes. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that thiolate anion, trifluoromethylarene, and iron cation could form an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, which induced selective defluorination and then difunctionalization of alkenes to obtain aryldifluoromethylated products. The generated aryldifluoromethylated compounds make it difficult to form an EDA complex again, thus avoiding excessive defluorination. This conversion has concise and ambient reaction conditions and provides an alternative solution for obtaining difluorobenzylic intermediates.

Abstract:DMSO‐TsCl has been developed for direct methylthiolation of various electron‐rich heteroarenes (more than 40 examples) with high regioselectivity in moderate to excellent yields (up to 96%). Especially, pyrroles, furans and thiophenes can be efficiently mono‐methylthiolated. This practical method features scalable, metal‐free, mild conditions which are compatible with air and moisture. Several applications of methylthiolated product were demonstrated for the first time. Based on controlled experimental results, a plausible mechanism was proposed with two key intermediates involved in mechanism being detected by HRMS.

This protocol use earth‐abundant FeSO4·7H2O as the catalyst, and AgSCF3 as the trifluoromethylthiolating reagent to provide various SCF3‐containing quinoxalin‐2(1H)‐one derivatives in 26‐88% yields. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction proceeds through a radical pathway.

Abstract:A simple, efficient and practical iron-catalyzed azidoarylthiation of alkenes has been developed at room temperature, and the corresponding products containing ortho-sited sulfide and azide units were obtained in moderate to good yields with good tolerance of functional groups. The protocol uses readily available 1-(alkylthio)pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and trimethylsilyl azide as the alkylthiation and azidation reagents, respectively, inexpensive and environmentally friendly iron chloride as the catalyst without addition of any ligand and additive.
