Abstract:Abstract In this editorial we introduce a new non-profit open access journal, Imaging Neuroscience. In April 2023, editors of the journals NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports resigned, and a month later launched Imaging Neuroscience. NeuroImage had long been the leading journal in the field of neuroimaging. While the move to fully open access in 2020 represented a positive step toward modern academic practices, the publication fee was set to a level that the editors found unethical and unsustainable. The publisher of NeuroImage, Elsevier, was unwilling to reduce the fee after much discussion. This led us to launch Imaging Neuroscience with MIT Press, intended to replace NeuroImage as our field’s leading journal, but with greater control by the neuroimaging academic community over publication fees and adoption of modern and ethical publishing practices.

We launched our first journal in the year 2000, and have since seen several positive global developments which have helped establish open access as an important trend in the evolvement of scholarly communication. We have consequently observed a steady increase in awareness of open access and specifically, of our wide range of specialist as well as broad interest titles which is reflected in our growing submission numbers.BioMed Central as one of the main open access publishers has helped to establish open access as a new way of making academic research available to researchers and the public, and to introduce a change of the subscription business model in academic publishing and libraries. While BioMed Central also offers a solution for the Green Route of open access (“Open Repository”) the main part of our publishing activity is centred around our fully or “gold” open access journals. BioMed Central and SpringerOpen practise the “author pays” model, whereby the author is asked to pay a fee to cover the publisher’s cost of publishing and distributing the article. While the awareness of open access is growing among the academics, there is still uncertainty among many of how open access works and why they are asked to pay a fee. To cover that fee can still be a major obstacle for a researcher attempting to publish an article in an open access journal, as the SOAP report stated in 2011.I will present an analysis of the most recent open access developments and studies globally; as well as the effect that this has had on a number of factors that play a role in scholarly publishing, such as Impact Factors, citations and awareness of open access among academics. I will give an update on BioMed Central and Springer’s own development in the arena of open access and visibility of research, including experimenting with alternative methods of evaluating research such as Altmetric and the SCImago Journal & Country Rank. I will conclude with an overview of how we are working with research organisations and universities to offer financial support to their researchers in order to cover the fee for publishing in BioMed Central and SpringerOpen journals in the context of our institutional membership program.

Publishing Biomedical Research: a rapidly evolving ecosystem

Abstract:The advancement of science requires the publication of research results so other scientists may examine, confirm, and build upon them, and the publishing ecosystem that mediates this process has undergone dramatic change over recent decades. This article takes a broad view of the biomedical research publishing system from its origins in the 17th century to the present day. It begins with a story from the author's lab that illustrates a scientist's complex interactions with the publishing system and then reviews the history, growth, and evolution of scientific publishing, including several recent disruptive developments: the digital transformation, the open access (OA) movement, the creation of "predatory journals," and the emergence of preprint archives. Each has influenced scientific peer review and editorial decision-making, two processes critical to the conduct of medical and scientific research and culture. After briefly discussing concerns about the impact of politics on editorial decision-making, the article closes with thoughts on the future evolution of this publishing ecosystem, which will impact the biomedical research ecosystem that depends upon it. Beyond accelerated speed and improved access to publications, the community should prioritize research aimed at further enhancing the quality and impact of published research, the core goal of the scientific enterprise.

Abstract:As an open access journal, Life Sciences, Medicine and Biomedicine (LSMB) has made remarkable progress. LSMB is currently indexed by MyJurnal, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Malaysian Citation Index (MyCite) and Scilit. Data shows that a vast majority of articles published since 2017 are seeing growth in the number of citations, indicating that these articles are visible and gaining readership. One of the key elements for the journal’s success is the rigorous peer-review process. A step-by-step authors guide for manuscript preparation and submission, followed by a systematic peer-review process ensures a seamless yet efficient system. Beginning July 2021, all submitted manuscripts are processed through similarity checks before being approved for peer-review. This is in addition to other compliance checks related to publication ethics and best practices of the journal in line with the globally accepted recommendations. As part of the journal’s contributorship policy, authors are required to declare contributions of each person named in the manuscript. In light of recent development in generative artificial intelligence, authors are also required to confirm that all submitted work including texts, figures and images are not created using generative AI. Importantly, the dedication and commitment of all the editors, associate editors and reviewers were instrumental in ensuring conformity to the benchmark and standards required by the journal. Since the establishment of the journal in 2017 and looking forward beyond 2024 – these areas of quality assurance will remain the fundamental focus of Life Sciences, Medicine and Biomedicine. In recent years, the journal has seen growing publications from diverse geographical locations including authors from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Philippines, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States. To further support this growth, the journal is continuously engaging subject matter experts in different areas of life sciences, medicine and biomedicine for editorial roles. Currently, the editorial and International Advisory Board members include experts from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and the UK, coming from more than 15 different research and higher education institutions. As the journal continues to reach an ever-growing audience, a variety of solutions are being explored to make scientific publishing readily accessible to everyone, the authors, researchers, and the public. Work is in progress to support authors when needed. This is to ensure that publishing cost will not be an obstacle for sharing scientific discoveries if, and when manuscripts are accepted for publication after peer-review. Mechanisms are being developed to allow the journal to address this on a case-by-case basis. The journal is fully committed towards open access allowing authors to retain the copyright of their published work and to provide the public unlimited access to these resources, within the scope of the open access policies. The journal welcomes manuscript submissions for articles in a few categories including research article, review, mini review, case report and opinion pieces. It is hoped that through these open access publications, broader conversations will emerge between researchers around the world. With the comprehensive framework in place, and the current trajectory, the journal is looking forward to establishing its presence as a rigorous, credible and reputable peer-reviewed open access journal in the region and globally.

Abstract:Welcome to the inaugural issue of Molecular Medicine Communications-a biannual, open access, and peer-reviewed journal aiming to publish high quality research articles in the field of basic & clinical molecular medicine. The molecular medicine perspective emphasizes cellular and molecular phenomena and interventions rather than the previous conceptual and observational focus on patients and their organs. Molecular Medicine Communications will publish studies investigating the cellular and molecular aspects of medicine, especially related to pharmacology, pathology, genetics, neurosciences, infectious diseases, and molecular medicine in general. Animal studies investigating molecular mechanisms of disease diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment, as well as investigational new compounds using in vitro, in vivo, and in silico tools for mechanistic insights are also welcomed. One aspect of molecular medicine which this journal will have primary focus on, is precision medicine. Advances in precision medicine have already led to powerful new discoveries and several new treatments that are tailored to specific characteristics, such as a person’s genetic makeup, or the genetic profile of an individual’s tumor. This is helping transform the way we can treat diseases such as cancer: Patients with breast, lung, and colorectal cancers, as well as melanomas and leukemias, for instance, routinely undergo molecular testing as part of patient care, enabling physicians to select treatments that improve chances of survival and reduce exposure to adverse effects. In the last two decades, rapid advances in technology have enabled researchers to investigate arcane biological phenomena and ask deeper questions at cellular, molecular and atomic levels. Several cellular processes involved in health and disease are being unraveled at a rapid pace, high resolution, and with unprecedented details. Authors carrying out investigations leveraging these technologies such as next genome sequencing, CRISPR-Cas9, digital medicine, 3-D printing, bioinformatics, and stem cell technologies, are encouraged to submit their finding to Molecular Medicine Communications. The purpose of this journal is to provide a platform to the scientific fraternity, especially to the regional and national academics, where they could get their studies published after a rapid, transparent and high-quality peer-review. All the articles published in Molecular Medicine Communications will be freely available to readers immediately after their publication. Open access policy of our journal is likely to increase the readership of articles and will enhance their visibility and citation potential. Abstract:This editorial outlines the issue of preprints in scholarly communication. It presents the policy regarding them in Advances in Clinical and Medical Problems and a summary of papers released as preprints and subsequently published in this journal or rejected until July 10, 2024. The introduction discusses the definition of preprint, and leading preprint servers are listed. Policies of 2 such services - Research Square and medRxiv - most frequently chosen by Adv Clin Exp Med authors are then described, followed by a broad outline of the advantages of preprints and controversies surrounding them, based on selected literature on this topic. The next section discusses the policies of most renowned medical journals and publishers regarding preprints. The preprint policy of Adv Clin Exp Med is then thoroughly explained, as well as its reasons. All papers previously released as preprints and published in this journal in 2021-2024 are presented, focusing on meaningful differences between them. Rejected papers previously released as preprints, submitted to Adv Clin Exp Med in 2022-2024, are also listed and discussed. The conclusion is that the basis for endorsing preprints in this journal is not that they benefit this journal but that they serve the scientific community as a whole and science in general by facilitating rapid dissemination of results and fostering immediate assessment of those results by other investigators and debate around them. The most justified line of action is educating authors about the benefits and problems related to preprints.

Abstract:In an era where knowledge is abundant but not necessarily available, the emerging open science movement is a critical step towards accessible and transparent science. Open science aims to increase research availability and reach across different audiences through open data, open access platforms, transparent peer review methods, and public access. [ 1–6 ] Specifically, the movement seeks to increase the amount of science research that is accurately being disseminated to the public as well as trust in science. Prior to the open science movement, access to research data was more limited, had inadequate reporting guidelines, and lacked reproducibility. [ 7 , 8 ] Many measures have been taken to increase study data availability, allowing for improved data assessment and transparency. [ 8–10 ] For example, tools such as the Open Science Framework (OSF) have been created for use as a centralized platform for open workflow throughout the research process. [ 2 , 11 ] These measures allow researchers to better understand, modify, verify, and replicate study data. [ 2 , 12 , 13 ] In addition, open data encourages the reuse of existing data to avoid redundancy in scientific literature. [ 14 ] A crucial part of open science includes open access publishing, which enables research to be more freely communicated with the public. The term "open access" encompasses different materials such as preprints, open access journals, and post-prints, all of which allow more equitable access to scientific information. [ 9 , 10 , 15 ] Although "closed access" journals still exist, many have now adapted to varying degrees of open access publishing models. [ 10 ]

Author-choice open access publishing in the biological and medical literature: a citation analysis

Abstract:In this article, we analyze the citations to articles published in 11 biological and medical journals from 2003 to 2007 that employ author-choice open access models. Controlling for known explanatory predictors of citations, only 2 of the 11 journals show positive and significant open access effects. Analyzing all journals together, we report a small but significant increase in article citations of 17%. In addition, there is strong evidence to suggest that the open access advantage is declining by about 7% per year, from 32% in 2004 to 11% in 2007.
