Abstract:This paper is expected to introduce the latest advances in heavy gas discharging dispersion experimental studies,including full- scale field experiment and the lab-scale simulation experiment.As a matter of fact,lab-scale simulation can be divided into water simula- tion and wind tunnel simulation.Particular attention has been paid in this paper to the full-scale field experiments,of which we have made a detailed discussion.As we know,full-scale field experiment arrived at its heyday around 1980 for its advantage of good visualization. However,when we use salt water to proceed with the water simula- tion,it has been easy for us to get the photo of vortex structure for its slower flow velocity than heavy gas.On the contrary,if the experi- ment can be done in the internal water,it would be safer with no need to worry about the toxic and corrosive damage.The second part of this paper is dedicated to the description of the wind-tunnel experi- ment,which doesn't involve too much financial expenditure and ma- terial resource consumption.But its result is also reliable and pro- vides data for the necessary numerical simulations.And,finally,we have made necessary description over the research status of wind tun- nel experiment,which is in a position to suggest likely directions for the future studies in this way.
Study on Local Gas-Liquid Dispersion in Dual-Impeller Aerated Stirred Vessel

Abstract:The local gas holdup in a dual-impeller agitated gas-liquid vessel was measured with a conductivity probe.The experiment results showed that the local gas holdup increased with the increase of the radial distance in the bottom region,and decreased in the impeller region,while it increased firstly and then decreased in other regions.With the increase of the superficial gas velocity,the local gas holdup decreased in the bottom region while it increased in other regions in the vessel.The local gas holdup in the upper circulation region was almost not affected by the agitated speed while it increased in other regions with the increase of the stirring speed.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup was used to analyze the uniformity of the local gas holdup distribution in the vessel.The smaller the standard deviation was,the better the gas dispersion was.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup increased with the increase of the superficial gas velocity while it decreased with the increase of the stirring speed.The standard deviation of the local gas holdup kept almost unchanged under the high superficial velocity or at the high stirring speed.The global gas holdup correlation between the power consumption and superficial gas velocity was proposed.
Heavy Gas Cloud Dispersion In Atmosphere Environment

Abstract:A new heavy gas dispersion model-STA-HGDM (Static and Turbulent Atmosphere Heavy Gas Dispersion Model), including static atmosphere model and turbulent atmosphere model, is summarized and developed on the basis of analyzing the existing models. Using the STA-HGDM model, seven Throney Island Trials, which are different from each other in environment conditions, are simulated. The simulation results of STA-HGDM, IIT Heavy Gas Model, HEGADAS model, MARIAH model and the test data are compared with each other. The comparison indicates the STA-HGDM has the advantages of simple form, good simulation precision and quick calculation. Through analyzing and discussing the simulation results, the disadvantages of STA-HGDM and the main research contents and directions in the future in the field are,Pointed out.

Abstract:Research progress of air hold-up,bubble size distribution and gas-liquid mass transfer in stirred vessel with viscous fluid were summarized from the perspective of experiment and simulation.The influences of impeller,operating conditions,viscosity or non-Newtonian characteristics on gas dispersion were discussed.The combination of radical-flow impellers and up-pumping axial impellers could decrease the scale of air cavitation,and was suitable for low viscosity and moderately viscous fluids.The influence of agitation speed was more significant than air inflation rate.With increasing agitation speed,uniformity of bubble distribution became better.Increasing air inflation rate enhanced air hold-up occupied by big bubbles.The non-uniformity of air distribution became worse.Increasing viscosity or non-Newtonian capacity changed the rate of collision of bubbles,making mean bubble size smaller.Correction of computational model for viscous fluids was presented and the direction of future research was prospected.

Abstract:Heavy and buoyant particle dispersion in the turbulent mixing layer was investigated numerically using a two-phase flow discrete vortex modelling. It was revealed from the modelling that inclusion of two-way momentum coupling is essential for properly modelling heavy particle dispersive transport in turbulent free shear flows. For heavy particles with small Stokes numbers, the dispersion is predominated by the large-scale vortex structures and they exert small influence on the carrier fluid flow. Heavy particles with large St directionally align along the braid region between the neighbouring vortices. However, the lateral dispersion of particles of large St is smaller than that of particles of small St.

Abstract:In the jet bubbling reactor, as the liquid jet velocity increases, the gas-liquid dispersion shows three states including the flooding, loading, and complete dispersion. In this work, the liquid velocity near the wall above the gas distributor of the jet bubbling reactor was measured by the Pavlov tube to identify the aforementioned three dispersion states. It was found that the standard deviation of liquid velocity and the average liquid velocity both appeared four stages with the increase of jet velocity, which included the first plateau, the ascending stage, descending stage and second plateau. Wherein, the first plateau corresponded to the flooding state, the ascending and descending stages corresponded to the loading state, and the second plateau corresponded to the complete dispersion state. Therefore, the criterion for the critical jet velocity was proposed. The jet velocity at the intersection of the first plateau and the ascending stage was the flooding velocity ujf, and the jet velocity at the intersection of the descending stage and the second plateau was the complete dispersion velocity ujcd. Compared with the visual observation method, the average relative deviation of ujf obtained by liquid velocity standard deviation analysis was 5.82%, the average relative deviation of ujcd was 18.2%; the average relative deviation of ujf obtained by time-averaged liquid velocity analysis was 5.86%, and the average relative deviation of ujcd was 12.1%. The study also found that the blunt jet velocity increases as the superficial gas velocity increases.

Abstract:For studying the heavy gas effect in the accidental release of natural gas,the diffusion process of heavy gas clouds was analyzed according to the heavy gas diffusion mechanism and the research methods for inflammable and explosive toxic gas,large numbers of experiments and numerical models for simulating heavy gas clouds home and abroad were reviewed,including phenomenological model,box and similar model,three-dimensional hydrodynamic model and superficial model and their research progresses.At last,it was suggested that the future research interests for the heavy gas effect of natural gas should be the method combining three-dimensional hydrodynamic model with local data collection based on the above.

Abstract:In some release accidents, dense gases are formed, and its dispersion behaviour is more different from passive dispersion. Heavy gas dispersion mainly includes gravitational slumping, entrainment of air, cloud cluster heating and transition to the passive phase. The forward finite difference and Newton iterance are used in the light of box model and other heavy gas dispersion models, such as IIT Heavy Gas Models and virtual point source model, to solve the differential equations of controlling heavy gas cloud dispersion behaviour in order to simulate the Thorney Island Trial 008 to obtain the relationship between the shape character (cloud cluster radius and cloud cluster height) and the time after release, the relationship between air entrainment quality and the time after release and predict maximum mole component at various downwind distance on the ground level from the release point. The simulation results well reflect the special dispersion behaviour of heavy gas cloud. Analysis are made to interpret the difference between simulation results and experimental data, and the results indicate that the method which is used to simulate the dispersion behavior of heavy gas cloud is feasible and the precision is higher than that of IIT Heavy Gas Models.

Abstract:Three gas-liquid dispersion states including flooding, loading, and complete dispersion are observed sequentially in a jet bubbling reactor with an increase of the liquid jet velocity at the nozzle outlet (u(j)). The gas-liquid dispersion states are identified through the slope (k) of the curve of fluctuation distribution index (FI) versus u(j) as follows: (a) under the flooding, k = 0; (b) under the loading, k > 0; (c) under the complete dispersion, k < 0. In particular, the u(j) at the transition points from flooding to loading and from loading to complete dispersion are referred to flooding jet velocity (u(jf), the transition point between k = 0 and k > 0) and complete dispersion jet velocity (u(jcd), the transition point from k > 0 to k < 0), respectively. The average relative deviations of the u(j) at the transition points obtained through the acoustic emission measurement and visual observation are less than 5%.

Abstract:Dispersed micro- to nano-particle-laden gas flows are common in many engineering and environmental applications. Characterizing both their dispersed and carrier phase using experimental methods is very important for determining their properties and behavior. This paper reviews techniques for measuring the carrier phase, as well as the dispersed particles ranging from the micro- to the nano-scale. We focus not only on the developments of specific techniques over the last 20 years, but also on relationships and comparisons among these techniques. In addition to a systematic description and classification of these methods, we discuss the parameters they measure, such as particle velocity, size, composition and concentration. A more detailed review is provided for several important measurement techniques, including particle image velocimetry, the phase-Doppler particle analyzer and light-scattering intensity measurements for microparticles, as well as the scanning mobility particle sizer, the fast mobility particle sizer and the electrical low pressure impactor for nano-particles. The founding principles, development histories, various applications of these techniques and where they are going are summarized. This article provides a resource for investigators that plan to study micro- or nano-particle-laden gas flows in various contexts.

Abstract:The characters of some numerical models which describe discharging dis persion process of flammable or toxic gases have been analyzed. The models inclu de Gaussian plume/puff model, Gaussian plume trajectory model, BM model, Sutton model and FEM3 model. Gaussian plume/puff and Gaussian plume trajectory models u sed abroad have been introduced emphatically. Aiming at the complication of the di spersion process,such as weather conditions and landform situation which influen ce the d iffusion process of flammable or toxic gases have been analyzed in detail, and s ome countermeasures have been put forward to ascertain some uncertain parameters .

Abstract:Gas-liquid mass transfer is widespread in chemical industrial processes like gas separation. Enhancing gas-liquid mass transfer can help achieve production process with high efficiency and low energy consumption. It is an effective method to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer by adding the third dispersed solid particles. A review and comparison of the experimental and theoretical research results on gas-liquid mass transfer in the presence of fine particles were presented and existing problems were analyzed. Based on the traditional gas-liquid mass transfer theories, three widely accepted mechanisms explaining gas-liquid mass transfer enhancement caused by fine particles were introduced. Several homogenous and heterogeneous models developed for micro-explanation of the enhancement effect were discussed briefly, with their application scope and accuracy compared. Finally, the study directions in the field of gas-liquid mass transfer with nanoparticles were proposed based on the overview.

Abstract:With consideration of the Stokes drag and virtual mass force, the equations for mean and fluctuating velocities in rotation and translation were given for rigid cylindrical particles moving in a turbulent flow. Then the rotational and translational dispersion coefficients of particle were derived. The relationships between the dispersion coefficients and flow length scale as well as particle characteristic parameters were analyzed. The resulting dispersion coefficients were proved to decrease as the particle length increases. The conclusions are helpful for the further research on the motion of cylindrical particles in turbulent flows.

Abstract:This review is part of the horizontal bias pulverized coal combustion R&D plan and technological basis of the further study on dual rectangular parallel gas solid two-phase jets.Authors investigate experimental works on the gas solid two-phase fluid flow of planar and round jets.The review showes that effects of large eddy orderly structure and initial conditions on the particle dispersion of gas solid two-phase free jets are dominant.The effect could be estimated with the St number.Particle size and particle load play important roles in determining gas solid two-phase turbulent properties,and numerical simulation on gas solid two-phase planar or round jets has to face the challenge of determining simulation method and guiding engineering design because of the fact that the influence of wake eddy shedding of large particle flow on turbulence structure is sometimes the key message which should be expressed in mathematical models.The numerical simulation technology should be estimated,the following papers will present our works in detail.

Abstract:Evolution of vortex structures in round jet was simulated with a three-dimensional discrete vortex filament method. The motion of the particles was described by a Lagrangian equation and the counteraction of particles on the flow was taken into account by using a modified velocity model. It is indicated that in two-phase jet flow the introduced particles restrain the crosswise dispersion of jet shear layer and mergence of vortex structures. With the increase of St number, the influence of flow on particles motion is decreased, but the counteraction of particles on the flow is increased. The difference of flow field obtained with two models, one-way coupling model and two-way coupling model, is greater than that of particles trajectories.

Abstract:<p>Heavy gas dispersion is significantly impacted by meteorological conditions. In this study, the widely-used heavy gas dispersion model SLAB is revised by using alternative parametrizations for the meteorological parameters, mixing layer height, and wind speed profile. The Nozaki method and the stability modified logarithmic wind profile evolved from the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory are adopted to calculate the mixing layer height and wind speed profile in the improved SLAB-M model, respectively. Dense gas dispersion model evaluation protocols are used to evaluate SLAB-M, and the datasets from the Jack Rabbit II (JR II) 2015 Trials are used to compare the accuracy of the simulations to observed data. The statistical performance measures (SPMs) of SLAB-M are overall a little better than that of SLAB, and SLAB-M effectively simulates heavy gas dispersion under the different meteorological conditions of the JR II 2015 Trials. Thus, it can better satisfy the requirements of consequence assessment and emergency response for the leakage and dispersion of hazardous gasses.</p>

Abstract:This work is devoted to the numerical study of particle dispersion prediction of gas-solid coaxial jet with a larger concentration difference. In pulverized coal gasifier, the pulverized coal is very dense at the nozzle outlet, and its volume fraction can reach 0.3. Then, it is dispersed rapidly under the action of high-speed annular gas, and the particle volume fraction in the space is less than 0.002. In order to better predict the motion characteristics of a gas-solid jet with a high concentration gradient, the applicability of the three models is compared. The results show that the dense discrete phase model (DDPM) and Eulerian two-fluid model (TFM) models considering particles collision can accurately predict the dense jet flow at low annular gas velocity. The DDPM and discrete phase model (DPM) show a good simulation for the dispersion characteristics of particles at high annular velocities where the particles' collision could be ignored. Therefore, DDPM has better adaptability for coaxial jet with large concentration gradient. The DDPM was used to predict the particle velocity and concentration for different annular gas velocities and different particle mass loads. It is found that particle flow is contracted first and then dispersed gradually under the action of airflow. The particle dispersion range increases with the increase of solid loading rate, and the corresponding radial distribution of particle velocity is greater.

Abstract:The risk from the leakage and dispersion of heavy gas is much more serious than that of light gas due to the existence of heavy gas effect .A multi-source dispersion model of heavy gas was developed on the basis of a single SLAB model .And the dispersion behaviors of single and multi-source heavy gas at the mode of continuous and instantaneous leakage were simulated .Then ,with a case study of chlorine ,the downwind time-averaged concentration distribution under corresponding conditions was calculated . Further ,combined with the toxicity criteria ,the accident-affected areas at different toxic levels were presented to provide theoretical guidance for emergency rescue and evacuation decision-making .

Abstract:Micro‐packed beds have the advantages of excellent heat and mass transfer efficiency and high safety, which have been successfully applied to hydrogenation and oxidation reactions. The dispersion behavior of multiphase flow is closely related to mass transfer and reaction performance. However, the study of dispersion law in micro‐packed beds is not sufficient. This work investigated the dispersion behavior of gas–liquid/liquid–liquid two‐phase flow in micro‐packed beds. The average size and distribution of droplets/bubbles were measured in different systems. Key parameters that affect the dispersion characteristics of the two phases were observed experimentally, including gas/liquid phase flow rate, size of the packing, and physical parameters of the systems. The experimental results showed that gas–liquid and liquid–liquid dispersion processes exhibited different characteristics due to the different physical parameters of liquid and gas as the dispersed phase. The fracture driving force of the gas–liquid process was mainly from the continuous liquid phase, while the fracture driving force of the liquid–liquid process came from both the dispersed phase and the continuous phase.
