In this article, the author selects and analyzes 10 universities to find how general education works and what we can learn from them in our university curriculum reform.

Abstract:The general education is different from the professional education ,its aim is to develop the idealist who have the right values,perfect personality,and responsiblity for the society. The purpose of general education determines its culture that plays an indispensable role in general education. Based on analysis and elaboration of the connotation and its education significance of the university culture ,the author has discussed the cultural value of general education from the general educational objective ,curriculum and its process these three aspects in this paper,and has put forward that building and value mining general educational culture is a necessary choice which the general education and its quality can be improved.

Abstract:General education has been the focus of attention in the international higher education for a long time.Advanced countries have accumulated a lot of experiences in this field,and some universities in China have actively undertaken experiments in recent years.Although it is commonly agreed that universities (especially comprehensive research universities) need to implement general education in the undergraduate study,people's understanding of general education and related concepts are not only different but also unclear.This article clarifies the definition of general education and its relationships with and/or differences from such related concepts as specialized education,liberal education,humanistic education,quality-oriented education,specialty education,as well as general courses and common courses.

Abstract:The United States is a young country with not very of only three hundred years, including one hundred years' Colony Period; the process of American higher education, of course, comparatively even shorter. However, there is a rapid development in American education after its independence, and now America has been the most strong nation in culture-exporting, with its higher education increasingly becoming the model that other countries try their best to study and imitate. So, it is necessary for us to review its historical developing process, to recover and explore the reason for its success; at the same time, a reference may be offered to our reform in higher education.

Abstract:As an emerging branch of biology, Synthetic Biology has seen rapid development with great potential in theoretical research and application. With a lot of brand-new concepts and research methods, it brings challenges to university teachers, and little experience is available in China on the teaching of Synthetic Biology. In this study, we discussed the general education-based development and application of the course on Synthetic Biology (a discipline in "liberal arts" in Zhejiang University) from the background, design, implementation, outcome, and problems of the course, hoping to provide a reference for the optimization of the course and the design of similar courses in other universities in China.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the economic and political background of general education in Hong Kong and Taiwan universities and introduced some of their typical ideas of general education.At present general education in these universities takes on a situation of diversity,whether in organization setup,course content or the way of option,each with its characteristics respectively.The present situation of general education in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the National Taiwan University are specially introduced.Benefiting from their experience,mainland universities should have more freedom to run schools,and strengthen the construction and theoretical study of the general education system.

Abstract:Embedding general education in the Chinese university education system is a considerably complex systemic project, and a lack of institutional arrangements beneficial to general education has always been a key barrier in implementation. Currently, the main institutional restricting factors for university general education include substantial major-based education systems, scattered credit management systems, lack of a distributive elective system with interdisciplinary integration, and a vertically segmented course management system. In the process from popularizing to deepening general education, Chinese universities must move from imitating and transplanting toward local construction; establish the new ideal of undergraduate general education; focus on building featured, university-based fundamental general education curricula; and seek out a path that suits the institutional environment of Chinese universities.

Abstract:This article surveys general education curriculum provided by nine universities which were initially included in the 985 Project.There still exist some problems such as lack of freedom in selecting subjects,too much courses concerning with application,a lot of similarities but lack of diversities and individualities among universities and etc.Therefore,firstly,Chinese universities should reconsider general education by a particular view of talents.Secondly,the universities should deal with relationship of different factors while conducting general education curriculum,namely,application and humanity,requirement and necessity,obligatory and option,unification and diversity.And thirdly they should estalish some institutions to guarantee quality of general education.

Abstract:The concept and practice of general education have been widely discussed and debated in the Euro-American world, but its adaptation in China needs further discussion and understanding. Over the past decade, its impact on Chinese higher education is increasingly salient, with a large number of Chinese first-tier universities claiming to initiate general education reforms to their previously narrowly focused undergraduate programs. This paper explores the development, implementation, and support of general education in a new type of research university in China from an organizational perspective. Through a case study of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper examines SUSTech's individualized and innovation-based general education system, highlighting its institution-wide approach and innovation-centered perspective. The findings underscore the importance of integrating general education principles throughout the university to foster self-directed thinkers and cultivate students' self-awareness, interests, and passions. This study also reveals how general education is used as an organizational solution to address a variety of historical and complicated issues that plague Chinese universities. This research serves as a catalyst for reform and innovation in Chinese higher education, inspiring transformative practices that meet the evolving needs of students and society.

Abstract:The relationship between general education and specialty education has been an important issue in world higher education,and it has not been fully discussed or implemented either in theory or practice in China.This paper first introduces the new strategies adopted by the Yuanpei Program of Peking University in its implementation of general education and the impact of these strategies. The paper then examines the strategies of Yuanpei Program in dealing with the relationship be- tween general education and specialty education.Finally,relevant reform suggestions are ana- lyzed to highlight the major constraints in the implementation of general education in comprehen- sive research universities,which indicates that conditions are not fully ripe for an effective gener- al education in China today.
