Abstract:Based on the brake and energy regeneration control principle of brushless DC motor for electric vehicles(EV),a simple but effective control strategy of brake and energy regeneration was proposed.During the braking period,only the switching sequence of the inverter was changed so that the braking energy would return to the battery.In this way,the driving range of an EV was increased.The results of PSIM simulations and experiments prove that the proposed strategy can effectively realize energy regeneration for an EV.

Abstract:In this paper, a cost-effective regenerative braking system for Electric Vehicles (EV) driven by induction machine (IM) is proposed. The structure of the system is simple because the extra demands are only the capacitor bank and resistor bank. A five- phase IM is chosen in this paper to adapt the high- power trend of EV and lower the device size. The required reactive power for the braking system is supplied by means of a parallel connected capacitor bank and a voltage source PWM converter. The capacitor bank is used as a bulk uncontrolled source to transfer reactive power to minimize the converter current and filter voltage harmonic. An instantaneous power based control algorithm is also implemented to regulate the AC output voltage and DC link voltage. The proposed scheme can be used efficiently for the electric vehicle (EV) to provide good voltage regulation charging the battery, and auxiliary effective brake torque during a wide speed range. Simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink and the result verified the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The efficient work of the braking system ensures the safety of the driver's life and property during the driving process. For tracked vehicles, a reliable braking system is the guarantee of completing the job or the task. This paper studies a high-speed electric-driven tracked vehicle's driving state on different mu-split road surfaces and establishes the braking system model and the longitudinal dynamics model of the vehicle and driving wheels. Steering stability analysis was carried out and a relative motion between the two-sided braking systems resulting in a transfer torque was found. A load simulation test system has been built and the improved forward speed tracking algorithm has been used to adjust the inertia by combining the flywheel and the loading motor to simulate the load of the driving wheel. The results of the motor load simulation test show that the load simulation algorithm in this paper can effectively simulate the load on the driving wheel and restore working conditions of the real tracked vehicle. This paper also conducts the combined braking test of the two-sided system which gives the torque situation on both sides of the vehicle and obtains the transfer torque by applying the load simulation algorithm.
Emergency Braking Control Strategy for High Speed Electric Drive Tracked Vehicle

Abstract:A comprehensive combined anti-lock braking strategy was proposed, in order to improve the braking performance of high speed electric drive tracked vehicles and reduce the stopping distance when braking on low adhesion grounds. This strategy consisted of a slip ratio controller which was based on robust sliding mode control, a rule-based braking torque pre-allocating method and a feedforward compensating algorithm. The strategy was designed according to modelling and analysis of the dynamics of high speed electric drive tracked vehicles, track-ground conditions as well as their braking actuators which were the mechanical brakes, permanent magnet synchronous motors and the hydraulic retarders. A semi-physical-in-loop (SPIL) test system, which consisted of a driver input subsystem, a test managing subsystem and a real-time simulating subsystem, was established based on a dSPACE SCALEXIO real-time host machine equipped with DS2680 IO board and DS2671 Bus board. Several real-time simulations and HIL tests, which included real driver inputs in the loop, were conducted under the situation of braking on snow from an initial velocity of 80 km/h. The simulation and test results show that, compared with traditional methods, this strategy can make better use of ground adhesion, keep the slip ratio stays in desired region more efficiently and reduce the stopping distance.

Abstract:A novel type of regenerative braking system for electric vehicles is proposed in this paper. Four pressure-difference-limit valves, two relief valves and two brake pedal simulators, are added to the layout of a conventional four-channel hydraulic modulator. The cooperation of relief valves and hydraulic pumps provides a stabilized high-pressure source. Pressure-difference-limit valves ensure that the pressure in each wheel cylinder can be modulated separately at a high precision. Besides, the functions of anti-lock braking system and electronic stability program are integrated in this regenerative braking system. The models of regenerative braking controller and vehicle dynamics are built in MATLAB/Simulink. Hydraulic brake model is built in AMESim through a parameterized and modularized method. Meanwhile, the control strategy of hydraulic brake modulation and brake force distribution are designed. Simulations are conducted via co-simulation interface between MATLAB and AMESim under scenarios of typical braking and ECE driving cycle. Simulation results show that regenerative and hydraulic braking forces are coordinated well during typical braking process, verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the models built and strategies proposed. Under an ECE driving cycle, the proposed RBS can recover more than 75% of the total recoverable braking energy, which lengthen the vehicle's driving range by more than 24%.

Abstract:A regenerative braking system and hydraulic braking system are used in conjunction in the majority of electric vehicles worldwide. We propose a new regenerative braking distribution strategy that is based on multi-input fuzzy control logic while considering the influences of the battery’s state of charge, the brake strength and the motor speed. To verify the braking performance and recovery economy, this strategy was applied to a battery electric vehicle model and compared with two other improved regenerative braking strategies. The performance simulation was performed using standard driving cycles (NEDC, LA92, and JP1015) and a real-world-based urban cycle in China. The tested braking strategies satisfied the general safety requirements of Europe (as specified in ECE-13H), and the emergency braking scenario and economic potential were tested. The simulation results demonstrated the differences in the braking force distribution performance of these three regenerative braking strategies, the feasibility of the braking methods for the proposed driving cycles and the energy economic potential of the three strategies.

Abstract:The development of a novel electrohydraulic brake system named REHB is presented in this paper. Neither high-pressure accumulator nor linear valves are adopted to reduce the system cost, the difficulty of manufacturing, assembling, and the risk of leakage. Stroke simulators are implemented to elevate the quality of pedal feel. The braking force blending control strategy is well designed to coordinate regenerative and friction brake force, which has ensured maximized regenerative brake force. In the aspect of underlying control, current amplitude modulation control is adopted to improve the accuracy of hydraulic pressure modulation and eliminate vibration noise. High fidelity models of vehicle and brake system are built based on MATLAB-AMESim co-simulation platform. Three demand levels of one-step-brake scenarios are simulated. Simulation results show the reasonability of proposed hydraulic structure and designed control strategy. A regenerative brake test bench is set up based on a prototype of the developed system. Three identical one-step-brake experiments are conducted on the test bench. According to the bench test results, the blending of regenerative and friction brake force tracks driver brake demand adequately well. Regenerative efficiencies are calculated as 46.32%, 43.93%, and 31.88%, respectively, in three bench tests. Compared with the previous generation, no obvious valve buzzing noise is observed, and jerks are whittled significantly. REHB has provided a brake-by-wire solution of safety, high energy recuperation efficiency with low cost, and uncompromising performance.

Abstract:Regenerative braking is a vital technology to reduce the electricity consumption in a variety of electric vehicles. A considerable improvement on energy economy is achieved by the electric motor running as a generator during vehicle deceleration. As an essential part of the regenerative braking system (RBS), regenerative hydraulic braking system (RHBS) acts an important role in regenerative braking. In this paper, a novel RHBS system with a cooperative control strategy is proposed to meet the requirement of both energy recovery and dynamic braking performance. The cooperative control strategy is composed of a hierarchical control structure in RBS and RHBS. The regenerative braking system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and AMESim platform. A specified ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) driving cycle is utilized as the simulation scenario. Simulation results show that the proposed RHBS has an expected hydraulic pressure control proficiency and the RBS with cooperative control strategy is effective in improving energy economy and dynamic performance.

Abstract:The brake energy recovery technology has become a key technology for electric vehicles which can significantly increase the energy economy of the electric vehicle. By-wire control of friction braking is the basic requirement for regenerative braking. For commercial vehicles with the pneumatic brake system, this article presents a novel electronic pneumatic brake system actuated by a linear motor. The electronic pneumatic brake system was modeled based on Matlab/Simulink and the accuracy of the model was verified by bench test data. Based on the analysis of model characteristic, PID and fuzzy PID controller are designed. The control effect is verified by the hardware-in-loop simulation platform of the electronic pneumatic brake system. Experimental results show that the overall performance of fuzzy PID control is better than PID control. The research can provide a friction braking force control solution for the braking energy recovery technology of an electric bus or truck using a pneumatic brake system.

Abstract:The regenerative braking technology is an effective means to increase the mileage of electric vehicles and reduce the energy consumption per hundred kilometers and is a key issue in the research of electric vehicles. With the development trend of intelligent and electrified vehicles, electrical brake booster system is undoubtedly the best choice for automotive boost brake. This article proposes a control scheme of cooperative regenerative braking function based on a domestic home appliance electrical brake booster system. The program refers to the functional framework and communication interface of the VDA360 standard. The main controller is a vehicle control unit. The motor system and the electrical brake booster system act as actuators. At the same time, based on the wheel hub test and real vehicle road test, the control scheme was verified by multiple conditions. The results show that the cooperative regenerative braking function greatly improves the vehicle energy recovery rate, and the development of this function lays the groundwork and foundation for the subsequent development of intelligent driving functions and active braking functions.

Abstract:Brake-by-wire system is becoming the vital actuating component in electrified vehicles and autonomous vehicles. This paper proposes a newly designed electronic hydraulic brake control system integrated with the featured specialties including regenerative and anti-lock braking control. The running principle behind the electronic hydraulic brake control system is studied in detail to illustrate the different usages when adapted to various braking conditions. To coordinate with the electromechanical system, a combined braking control strategy is presented. A complete electric vehicle simulation system is built on basis of MATLAB/Simulink, AMESim and CarSim, and the simulation is carried out in two typical scenarios of regenerative and anti-lock braking process. The simulation results show the proposed integrated electronic hydraulic brake system has the effectiveness in the performance evaluation of energy recovery and emergency braking conditions.

Abstract:This paper mainly focuses on control strategy of the regenerative braking system of an electric vehicle under safety critical driving situations. With the aims of guaranteeing the electric vehicle stability in various types of tire-road adhesion conditions, based on the characteristics of an electrified powertrain, a novel control strategy of regenerative braking system is proposed for electric vehicles during anti-lock braking procedures. Firstly, the main construction of the case-study electric car with regenerative braking system is introduced. Next, based on the phase plane theory, the optimal brake torque is calculated for ABS control of an electric vehicle. Then, an allocation control, wherein the required optimal brake torque is divided into two parts that are disposed respectively by the friction and regenerative brakes, is discussed. In addition, two parameters for evaluating regeneration braking energy efficiency contribution while in the deceleration braking process are defined. Furthermore, a novel regenerative braking control strategy named “serial control strategy” is proposed. Finally, the road tests are implemented in four types of tire-road adhesion conditions under safety-critical driving situations. The test results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:Brake-by-wire system is potentially employed in electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle thanks to the controllability on hydraulic pressure of wheel brakes. In this paper, a newly designed electronic control hydraulic braking (ECHB) system is founded as the brake-by-wire system. With the consideration lying on the regenerative braking and active braking performance, braking forces distribution of ECHB system in front and rear wheel brakes as well as motor regenerative braking force is introduced. Hydraulic braking system and motor drive are working cooperatively as the driver's braking demand is fulfilled in regenerative braking, and hydraulic pressure is allocated properly to avoid the wheel locking to enhance active braking safety. A comprehensive modeling process is developed with hydraulic braking system in AMESim, vehicle dynamics in CarSim, and braking control unit (BCU) and motor drive in MATLAB/Simulink respectively. Two co-simulation scenarios are programed for ECHB system evaluation: typical regenerative braking and active braking conditions. Simulation results are analyzed with depiction and calculation according to the dynamic performance. Effectiveness and feasibility of proposed ECHB system are concluded in view of energy economy and braking safety enhancement.

Abstract:In order to increase the regenerative braking energy recovery and the dynamic performance of vehicle start and acceleration in the stage of brake, the hydraulic braking energy recovery system was used with the storage battery braking energy recovery system after comparing kinds of regenerative braking recovery plan and energy storage method. The system was used to do simulation and analysis in vehicle dynamic performance and energy recovery efficiency under the PID control and ECE-15 cycle. The system simulation and analysis results show that using hydraulic regenerative braking system in pure electric vehicle can significantly improve the ability of vehicle's start-acceleration and the increase in vehicle driving range of around 28%.

Abstract:Brake-by-wire systems are one of the key components in intelligent/unmanned vehicles that have attracted worldwide attention. Testing and evaluation of brake-by-wire systems are a significant step during the development of the technology of vehicular braking and further the advancement of intelligent/unmanned vehicles. Using the test bench to simulate different road adhesion coefficients (i.e. road surfaces) and to complete the testing and evaluation of the vehicle braking systems is of great significance and importance. A test bench for simulation of vehicular braking of 1/4 vehicle is presented and investigated in this article. It is composed of a motor, two rollers, a 1/4 vehicle suspension system, a magnetic powder clutch, a flywheel, sensors, a signal acquisition and processing system, and a controller. The wheel and vehicle speeds are simulated by the rollers and flywheel speeds, respectively. The translational kinetic energy of 1/4 vehicle is simulated by the rotational kinetic energy of the flywheel. The signal acquisition and processing system is used to acquire and process the experimental signals, such as rotational speeds and torques during tests. The magnetic powder clutch with adjusted applied currents in the test bench is used to real-timely simulate roads with different adhesion coefficients. Based on the working principle of the test bench and the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics, the prototype of the test bench is established and the simulation approach of the translational kinetic energy of 1/4 vehicle is investigated. The mathematical model of the real-time simulation about roads with different adhesion coefficients based on the magnetic powder clutch with real-time controllable transmitted torque is established. With the built 1/4 vehicle braking systems based on the test bench and road, and the corresponding established models, the comparison and analysis of the simulation results of various road surfaces are conducted. Experiments are sequentially implemented to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the test bench.

Abstract:A coordinated control system is developed for the regenerative and hydraulic braking systems in electric vehicles based on a tire-road adhesion model to ensure the stability of electric vehicles with anti-lock braking using motor control accuracy and fast response.The system is designed for a distributed drive electric vehicle with the tire-road adhesion estimated according to the vehicle dynamics.The system measures the motor torque and the wheel cylinder braking pressure.Different coordinated control strategies are given for three tire-road adhesion levels with a coordination mechanism that stops the regenerative braking during anti-lock braking control.Simulations show that this strategy improves both the braking stability and the regenerative energy efficiency during braking.The regenerative braking control reduces the hydraulic braking pressure fluctuations and improves braking stability and comfort.

Abstract:This paper presents a parametric and modularized method in modeling the hydraulic components of the regenerative braking system, through which the newly built model has gained noticeable improvement in precision. The strategy for the exiting of the regenerative braking is optimized. The simulations are conducted in the co-simulation platform between AMESim and MATLAB/Simulink at the initial vehicle speed of 40 Km/h. The simulation results show that the newly built hydraulic model can describe the process of pressure increase and decrease precisely. Meanwhile the motor cooperates with the hydraulic braking system well throughout the whole braking procedure. The maximum jerk exerted on the vehicle is decreased from 2.69 m/s(3) to 0.59 m/s(3) during the exiting of regenerative braking, and the regeneration efficiency is increased to 76.18%.

Abstract:A dynamic test bench is developed, which is equipped with both hydraulic and electric motor brake actuators and can realtime simulate the dynamic change of road brake force. Based on the principle of hardware-in-the-loop test, the test bench incorporates real components including hydraulic brake subsystem, motor subsystem and speed and pressure sensors, and takes into consideration the dynamic response characteristics with the interactions among wheels, hydraulic and electric motor brake systems during braking. In addition, the control system of test bench developed with MABLAB/Simulink can meet the verification requirements of various control strategies. Finally, the key parameters of test bench are measured and a test on the slip ratio coordinated control of electro-hydraulic hybrid brake system is carried out, verifying the effectiveness and advantage of the test bench developed.
