Abstract:The present study concerns modification of surface of polyester fiber by magnetron sputtering using a silver (Ag) target. A detailed characterization of the silver-coated polyester fiber was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed the remarkable changes in the surface morphology and microstructure of silver film on polyester fiber after sputtering for 10 and 30 min respectively. The SEM results showed that the silver particles were uniformly and densely deposited on the surface of polyester fiber. The XRD pattern of silver coated fabric showed that silver film is polycrystalline structure and dominated by the very strong (220) peak. Depth profiling results of silver coated fabric by XPS indicated that mainly metallic silver is existed throughout the whole depth region.

Abstract:Silver (Ag)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics have been fabricated using ultrasonic-assisted electroless Ag plating. The structures of the Ag coating PET fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogrametric analysis (TG), respectively. The morphology and composition analysis show that the silver plating on PET fabrics is compact and continuous; TG curves of PET fabrics before and after plating indicate that the silver content is about 6.7% by weight; electromagnetic measurement demonstrates that the shielding effectiveness (SE) is more than 32dB at frequency ranging from 0.01MHz to 18GHz. The effects of ultrasonic technique and silane modification process on electroless silver plating were also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, silver plating filament woven fabrics as the main research object. To design the content of silver yarn and fabric structure, and try to weave 18 set of samples With the different organizations and different silver filament content. To find out the preliminary conclusions, we will make the test and analysis about fabric air permeability, moisture permeability and hygroscopicity of the performance and fabric style. Finally got the conclusion: the change of silver fibers content in fabrics had a little effects on fabric properties because of it’s softness.

Abstract:In this investigation, air plasma treatment was utilised to activate the surfaces of 100% grey and bleached cotton fabrics in preparation for metallic pigment printing. The study delved into the surface morphology, wettability, and surface chemistry properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed roughness and grooves in the treated samples. The contact angle witnessed a 29% and 41% increase for grey and bleached fabrics, respectively, compared to their untreated counterparts. Surface chemistry analysis using FTIR and XPS provided crucial insights into the functional polar groups, such as OH and C=O, along with significantly elevated O1 peaks in both plasma-treated grey and bleached cotton fabrics. These findings contributed to the enhanced surface free energy of the fabrics, preparing them for the subsequent pigment printing process. The study explores the impact of plasma treatment on the colour fastness of grey and bleached cotton fabrics printed with gold and silver metallic pigments. Untreated fabrics exhibited poor durability, with low colour change and staining-resistance ratings, particularly for gold pigments. Plasma treatment significantly improved colour retention, adhesion, and resistance to staining for both metallic pigments, with silver outperforming gold. Rubbing fastness tests revealed that plasma treatment moderately enhanced durability, though gold remained susceptible to friction damage. Light fastness was excellent for both pigments, and plasma treatment further improved performance. Perspiration tests showed that plasma treatment bolstered resistance, particularly for gold. These findings suggest that plasma treatment enhances the stability of metallic pigments, offering potential applications in the textile industry for improved product quality and durability.

Abstract:In this work, surface metallization of cotton fabrics was performed by electroless plating using a shorter route than is conventional. The fabric surface was activated by deposition of silver and copper nanoparticles, and then a thin layer of copper was coated using electroless plating. The performance of coated fabrics was compared in terms of electrical conductivity, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, Joule heating and antibacterial properties with another sample coated with conventional electroless plating. The orthogonal array testing strategy was adopted to optimize the various factors of the electroless plating bath. The samples prepared by electroless plating of copper showed greater performance for the fabric first deposited with silver particles than those first deposited with copper particles or conventionally treated. Samples of copper electroplating over silver had surface resistivity of 20 Ω, EMI shielding of 75.53 dB and Joule heating of 83.1 °C. Moreover, samples with modified electroless plating showed better attachment of the metal layer and therefore longer durability.

Abstract:The effects of atmospheric air-plasma treatments on woven polyester (PET) textile structures were studied by surface analysis methods: zeta potential, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), wettability and capillarity methods. The zeta potential of the fabrics was based on the established principles of streaming potential. The zeta potential measurements showed that plasma-treated fabrics indicated an acidic surface character. The water contact angle on plasma-treated PET decreased from 80° to 40°, indicating an increase in the surface energy of PET fibers due to a change in the fiber surface chemical nature, which was confirmed by an increase of the oxygen content in the surface detected by XPS. The capillary weight increased from 12 to 200 mg. Both capillary and zeta measurements showed 700 W as the optimum plasma treatment power.

We find the pretreatment and electroplating technology is the key of plating layer quality: 1, current density can influence the roughness of silver plating surface, if it is 0.5 A/dm(2), we can get the smooth silver plating; 2, electroplating time also plays an important role in controlling plating thickness, we can gain the even silver plating after 12 minsimilar to16 min plating.

Abstract:A novel and efficient method for the electroless silver plating polyimide fabric was developed with electromagnetic shielding properties. Firstly, polyaniline (PANi) was in situ polymerized with ammonium persulfate used as oxidizing agent. Secondly, Ag + was in situ reduced to Ag 0 by PANi, and the electroless silver plating was initiated by Ag 0 used as active center. Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, contact angle analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the composite fabric. It could be observed that silver layer-coated polyimide fabric was compact and uniform with surface resistance about 0.02 Ω/sq. The thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. The as-prepared fabric had excellent anti-corrosion, tensile strength and fastness. The shielding effectiveness of this fabric could reach 54–90 dB, which implied it was a good candidate as electromagnetic shielding materials in many fields.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, electrically conductive meta‐aramid fiber paper (MAFP) was prepared by combining low‐temperature plasma treatment and electroless plating. The influence of various plasma treatment parameters including nozzle speed, plasma cycle time and nozzle height on the electrical conductivity, washing fastness and bending fastness of silver‐coated MAFP was investigated. The results show that low‐temperature plasma treatment etched the surface of meta‐aramid fiber and increased the oxygen content on the MAFP surface. The optimal plasma treatment condition is: nozzle speed of 1 m/min, plasma cycle time of 80%, and nozzle height of 4–5 cm. The electrical resistance of the silver‐plated MAFP pre‐treated under this condition reached as low as 0.15 Ω/sq. In addition, the silver‐plated MAFP maintained high electrical conductivity (sheet resistance below 0.5 Ω/sq) after five washing cycles and 1000 bending cycles.

Abstract:The fabrics with electromagnetic interference (EMI) have been used in various fields. However, most studies related to the EMI fabrics focused on the improvement of the final electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EM SE) by adjusting the preparation parameters while the breathability of the EMI fabrics was affected and the visible surficial patterns on the EMI fabric was limited. In this work, the two samples based on the Song Brocade structure were fabricated with surficial visible pattern ‘卐’. One was fabricated with silver-plated polyamide (Ag-PA) yarns and the silk yarns, the another with polyester (PET) yarns and the silk yarns. The weaving structure of the two samples were investigated by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and laser optical microscopy (LOM). The resistance against the EM radiation near field communication (NFC) and the ultraviolet (UV) light was also evaluated. Besides, the surface resistance, the air permeability and the water evaporation rate were investigated. The results revealed that the ‘卐’ appeared successfully on the surface of the two samples with stable weaving structure. The Ag-PA yarn-incorporated Song Brocade fabric had the EMI shielding effectiveness value around 50 dB, which was supported by the low surface resistance less than 40 Ω. The excellent NFC shielding of the Ag-PA yarn-incorporated Song Brocade was also found. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value of the Ag-PA yarn-incorporated Song Brocade fabric was higher than 190. The air permeability and the evaporation rate of the Ag-PA yarn-incorporated Song Brocade fabric was higher than 99 mm/s, and 1.4 g/h, respectively. As a result, the Ag-PA yarn-incorporated Song Brocade fabrics were proposed for both the personal and the industrial scale utilization.

Abstract:Here, atmospheric pressure, Roll-to-Roll and non-thermal plasma treatment was utilized to modifying the surface characteristics of polyester fabric. Optical emission spectrometer (OES) of the plasma medium, revealed presence of N and O contained species such as N 2 , OH and CO that their emission lines were increased with the increase of plasma power. The results of AFM and SEM analysis showed the increased roughness in nano dimensions on the fabric surface. Also, ATR-FTIR analysis exhibited the higher peak intensities of C = O, NH and OH functional groups in the treated sample compared to the parent sample. Contact angle and capillarity tests revealed the increased wettability of fabric after plasma treatment that can be due to the increase of physical (confirmed by AFM and SEM) and chemical (confirmed by ATR-FTIR) changes in the fiber surface. By using the variance analysis of capillary results, the optimum (669/2 m min −1 /26n) and average (461w/7m min −1 /13n) condition of plasma treatment were determined. Finally, the treated sample absorbed antistatic solution at the much faster rate compared to the parent one which can be an advantage for better chemical treatment of fabrics. Moreover, the antistatic treatment of plasma-modified fiber led to change of its resistance from 9.9 × 10 10 to 1.8 × 10 8 Ω. Also, the same values of surface resistance after 30 days, confirmed the good durability of resistance test.

Abstract:Direct electroless silver plating of para-aramid (PPTA) is difficult due to its extremely low surface chemical energy. In order to facilitate the deposition of silver nanoparticles and to enhance the washing fastness, oxygen plasma treatment and dopamine modification were conducted before silver plating of PPTA fibers. Various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) were used to characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition and thermal stability of the silver-plated PPTA fibers. Electrical resistance and silver content of the silver-coated PPTA fibers before and after standard washing were also studied. The results showed that silver nanoparticles were successfully coated onto the surface of PPTA fibers with and without plasma treatment, but the coating continuity and the electrical conductivity of the silver-coated PPTA fibers were greatly enhanced with the assistance of plasma treatment. It was also demonstrated that the washing fastness of silver-coated PPTA fibers was improved after plasma treatment as indicated by electrical resistance and continuity of the silver nanoparticles after various washing cycles. It was found that the electrical resistance of plasma-treated PPTA-PDA/Ag fibers prepared at an AgNO3 concentration of 20 g/L reached 0.89 Ω/cm and increased slightly to 0.94 Ω/cm after 10 standard washing cycles. The silver-coated PPTA fibers also showed stable electrical conductivity under 250 repeated stretching-releasing cycles at a strain of 3%.
Electroless silver plating on fabrics for antimicrobial coating: comparison between cotton and polyester

Abstract:In the past few years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the interest towards textiles with antimicrobial functionalities faced a significant boost. This study proposes a rapid and convenient method, in terms of reactants and equipment, for fabricating antimicrobial coatings on textiles. Through the electroless silver plating reaction, silver coatings were successfully applied on cotton and polyester, rapidly and at room temperature. Functionalized samples were characterized by morphological (optical and scanning electron microscopies) and chemical tests (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS) to investigate the nature of the silver coating. Although distinct nanoparticles did not form, XPS analysis detected the presence of silver, which resulted in an increased surface roughness and hydrophobicity of both cotton and polyester textiles. Ag-coated samples exhibited approximately 80% biocompatibility with murine L929 fibroblasts or human HaCaT cells, and strong antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli in direct contact tests. In antiviral experiments with SARS-CoV-2 virus, treated cotton showed a 100% viral reduction in 30 min, while polyester achieved 100% reduction in 1 h. With a human norovirus surrogate, the Feline Calicivirus, both treated textiles have a faster antiviral response, with more than 60% viral reduction after 5 min, while achieving a 100% reduction in 1 h. In conclusion, this study presents a fast, efficient, and low-cost solution for producing antimicrobial textiles with broad applications in medical and healthcare scenarios.

Abstract:Properties of electroless copper-plated polyester fabric mainly depend on the plating bath constituents/conditions. The nickel serves to catalyze the copper deposition when hypophosphite is used as a reducing agent. In this study, the effects of deposition parameters including additive NiSO4 concentration and pH on microstructure and properties of the electroless copper plating on polyester fabric using hypophosphite as a reducing agent were investigated. The results show that at a higher NiSO4 concentration, the copper content present in the coating decreases whereas the nickel content increases slightly. On the other hand, the copper content present in the coating increases, whereas the nickel content and phosphorus decreases with respect to the rise of pH. The morphology of the copper deposits show that the particle size increase with respect to the rise of NiSO4 concentration and pH. The XRD patterns indicate that the copper-plated polyester fabrics are crystalline. In addition, there is a decrease in the surface resistance and an increase in the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) with respect to the rise of Ni2+ concentration and pH of the solution as a result of gaining a greater weight in the deposits. The results suggest that the copper-plated polyester fabrics have a great potential application as an EMI shielding material.

Abstract:The selective metallisation of textiles is becoming a very important process in the development of electronic or e-textiles. This study investigated the efficacy of polymer coatings for the protection of copper (Cu) conductive tracks electroless plated on polyester (PES) fabric against laundering and rubbing, without essentially affecting the physical-mechanical and optical properties of the base material. After the electroless deposition of a consistent layer of Cu onto PES, four polymers were applied individually by screen-printing or padding. The physical-mechanical characterisation of coated textiles revealed that polyurethane resin (PUR) and modified acrylate resin (AR) had little effect on the air permeability, tensile strength and breaking tenacity of the PES, as compared to silicone elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and epoxy resin (ER). On the other hand, PUR and PDMS had higher abrasion resistance and photo-stability under prolonged UV irradiation, as compared to AR and ER. In addition, freshly Cu plated samples were coated with polymers, washed up to 30 cycles and characterised by measuring their electrical resistivity, determination of colour changes and the examination of the surface morphology. Based on these results, PUR presented the most suitable protection of Cu tracks on PES, with the lowest impact on physical-mechanical properties. ER is not recommended to be used for protection of Cu tracks on fabrics, due to its rigidity, low photo-stability, washing and wear durability.
Surface Modification by the DBD Plasma to Improve the Flame-Retardant Treatment for Dyed Polyester Fabric

Abstract:In the first part of the study, dyed polyester fabric was treated with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma at 1 W/cm2 for 15, 30, 60 and 90 s. The wicking height, tensile strength and color of the control and plasma treated fabrics were measured. Results show that the fabric capillary increases with plasma treatment time up to 90 s. However, plasma treatment time longer than 60 s caused an obvious color change and decrease in tensile strength of fabric. Plasma contact time should be such that plasma can improve the hydrophilicity of the fabric and adversely affect the properties of the fabric as little as possible. Thus, the suitable plasma contact time should be less than 60 s. Based on these results, in the second part of the study, three different time levels (15, 20 and 30 s) were selected for plasma pretreatment of this fabric. The plasma-treated fabric was then padded with the flame retardant (FR) (CETAFLAM PDP 30), dried and finally cured at 190 °C for 120 s. The limited oxygen index (LOI) of FR fabrics and the vertical fire characteristics of FR fabric after being washed 5 times also were measured. Comparison of these results with those of FR fabrics without plasma pretreatment shows that plasma pretreatment improves the fabric’s flame retardancy and FR durability. Moreover, it also reduces the heat shrinkage of PET fabric due to high temperature curing. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fabric after plasma treatment and FR treatment and the energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum of the fabric are consistent with the above results.

Abstract:In the 5G era, for portable electronics to operate at high performance and low power levels, the incorporation of superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials within the packages is of critical importance. A desirable wearable EMI shielding material is one that is lightweight, structurally flexible, air-permeable, and able to self-clean. To this end, a bioinspired electroless silver plating strategy and a one-step electrodeposition method are utilized to prepare an EMI shielding fabric (CEF-NF/PDA/Ag/50-30) that possesses these desirable properties. Porous CEF-NF mats with a spatially distributed silver coating create efficient pathways for electron movement and enable a remarkable conductivity of 370 S mm–1. When tested within a frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz, this highly conductive fabric not only achieves an EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE of 101.27 dB at 5028 dB cm2 g–1) comparable to a very thin and light metal but also retains the unique properties of fabrics—being light, structurally flexible, and breathable. In addition, it exhibits a high contact angle (CA) of 156.4° with reversible surface wettability. After having been subjected to 1000 cycles of bending, the performance of the fabric only decreases minimally.
