Abstract:The ultrafast dynamics of 1,3-cyclohexadiene has been investigated via structurally sensitive Rydberg electron binding energies and shown to differ upon excitation to the 1B state and the 3p Rydberg state. Excitation of the molecule with 4.63 eV photons into the ultrashort-lived 1B state yields the well-known ring opening to 1,3,5-hexatriene, while a 5.99 eV photon lifts the molecule directly into the 3p-Rydberg state. Excitation to 3p does not induce ring opening. In both experiments, time-dependent shifts of the Rydberg electron binding energy reflect the structural dynamics of the molecular core. Structural distortions associated with 3p-excitation cause a dynamical shift in the - and -binding energies by 10 and 26 meV/ps, respectively, whereas after excitation into 1B, more severe structural transformations along the ring-opening coordinate produce shifts at a rate of 40 to 60 meV/ps. The experiment validates photoionization-photoelectron spectroscopy via Rydberg states as a powerful technique to observe structural dynamics of polyatomic molecules.
Ultrafast Photochemistry and Electron Diffraction for Cyclobutanone in the S2 State: Surface Hopping with Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Abstract:We simulate the photodynamics of gas-phase cyclobutanone excited to the S$_2$ state using fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) dynamics powered by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). We predict a total C3+C2 photoproduct yield of 9%, with a C3:C2 product ratio of 1:8. Two primary S$_2$$\rightarrow$S$_1$ conical intersections are identified: $\beta$ stretch and CCH bend, with the higher energy $\beta$ stretch being associated with sub-picosecond S$_2$ decay. Excited state lifetimes computed with respect to electronic state populations were found to be 7.0 ps (S$_2$$\rightarrow$S$_1$) and 550 fs (S$_1$$\rightarrow$S$_0$). We also generate time-resolved difference pair distribution functions ($\Delta$PDFs) from our TDDFT-FSSH dynamics results in order to generate direct comparisons to ultrafast electron diffraction experiment observables. Global and target analysis of time-resolved $\Delta$PDFs produced a distinct set of lifetimes: i) a 0.462 ps decay, and ii) a 16.8 ps decay that both resemble the S$_2$ minimum, as well as iii) a long ($>$ nanosecond) decay that resembles the S$_1$ minimum geometry and the fully separated C3/C2 products. Finally, we contextualize our results by considering the impact of the most likely sources of significant errors.

Abstract:Conjugated diene molecules are highly reactive upon photoexcitation and can relax through multiple reaction channels that depend on the position of the double bonds and the degree of molecular rigidity. Understanding the photoinduced dynamics of these molecules is crucial for establishing general rules governing the relaxation and product formation. Here, we investigate the femtosecond time-resolved photoinduced excited-state structural dynamics of cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene, a large-flexible cyclic conjugated diene molecule, upon excitation with 200 nm using mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction and trajectory surface hopping dynamics simulations. We tracked the photoinduced structural changes from the Franck-Condon region through the conical intersection seam to the ground state. Our findings revealed a novel primary reaction coordinate involving ring distortion, where the ring stretches along one axis and compresses along the perpendicular axis. The nuclear wavepacket remains compact along this reaction coordinate until it reaches the conical intersection seam, and it rapidly spreads as it approaches the ground state, where multiple products are formed.

Abstract:The non-radiative electron-relaxation dynamics in C$_{60}$ molecule is studied after selective initial photoexcitations. The methodology includes nonadibabtic molecular simulation combined with time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical surface hopping approach. Results of treating the DFT exchange-correlation (xc) interaction by the non-empirical Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE), hybrid PBE0, and hybrid Becke 3-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) functional are compared. Even though some differences in the details are found, all three functionals produce qualitatively similar unoccupied band structures in the ground state. The model-dependent differences in the ultrafast population dynamics, including the occurrences of transient entrapment of population, are studied systematically. The trend of the results demonstrates a universal dependence on the structure of unoccupied band offering a spectroscopic route to probe this structure. Results can be verified, as well as the best xc model for quantitative accuracy can be determined, by comparing with ultrafast transient absorption or time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. From the computational standpoint, the study facilitates method optimization to simulate nonadiabatic relaxation dynamics in technologically important fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:The precisely defined geometry of phenylacetylene dendrimers and macrocycles makes it possible to investigate systematic variations in chemical architecture on the nature of microstructural organization. Here we report on transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy studies of crystalline phases of these synthetic materials. Since the molecules are sensitive to electron beam damage, low-dose techniques were used to capture images and diffraction patterns dynamically. The data show increased crystal misorientation with increasing side-group length and molecular complexity. As the size increases, the number of conformations available to the molecule also increases, making it difficult to pack the molecules with fewer defects.

Abstract:This study examined the reaction mechanisms of singlet (rhombic) and triplet (linear) C4 with acetylene by using accurate ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations followed by a kinetic analysis of various reaction pathways and computations of relative product yields in combustion and planetary atmospheres. These calculations were combined with the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations of reaction rate constants for predicting product-branching ratios, which depend on the collision energy under single-collision conditions. The results demonstrate that the initial reaction begins with the formation of an intermediate 3i2 with an entrance barrier of 3.0 kcal mol-1 and an intermediate 1i1 without entrance barriers. The product-branching ratios obtained by solving kinetic equations with individual rate constants calculated using the RRKM and variational transition-state theories for determining the collision energies between 5 kcal mol-1 and 25 kcal mol-1 demonstrate that l-C6H + H is the dominant reaction product, whereas HC3C3 + H, l-C6 + H2, c-C6H + H, and c-C6 + H2 are minor products. The electronic absorption spectra of solid neon matrices in the range of 17 140-22 200 cm-1 were obtained by Maier et al., and the optimized ground and excited state structures of C6H were used to simulate the absorption spectra by one-photon excitation equations. The displaced harmonic oscillator approximation and the Franck-Condon approximation were used to simulate the absorption spectrum of the B2Π ← X2Π transition of C6H. This indicates that the vibronic structures were dominated by one of the six active completely symmetric modes, with v3 being the most crucial.

Abstract:The recent development of multidimensional ultrafast spectroscopy techniques calls for the introduction of computational schemes that allow for the simulation of such experiments and the interpretation of the corresponding results from a microscopic point of view. In this work, we present a general and efficient first-principles scheme to compute two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy maps based on real-time time-dependent density-functional theory. The interface of this approach with the Ehrenfest scheme for molecular dynamics enables the inclusion of vibronic effects in the calculations based on a classical treatment of the nuclei. The computational complexity of the simulations is reduced by the application of numerical advances such as branching techniques, undersampling, and a novel reduced phase cycling scheme, applicable for systems with inversion symmetry. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method by applying it to prototypical molecules such as benzene, pyridine, and pyrene. We discuss the role of the approximations that inevitably enter the adopted theoretical framework and set the stage for further extensions of the proposed method to more realistic systems.

Abstract:Triple differential cross section measurements for the electron-impact ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of tetrahydropyran and 1,4-dioxane are presented. For each molecule, experimental measurements were performed using the (e,2e) technique in asymmetric coplanar kinematics with an incident electron energy of 250 eV and an ejected electron energy of 20 eV. With the scattered electrons being detected at -5 degrees, the angular distributions of the ejected electrons in the binary and recoil regions were observed. These measurements are compared with calculations performed within the molecular 3-body distorted wave model. Here, reasonable agreement was observed between the theoretical model and the experimental measurements. These measurements are compared with results from a recent study on tetrahydrofuran [ D. B. Jones, J. D. Builth-Williams, S. M. Bellm, L. Chiari, C. G. Ning, H. Chaluvadi, B. Lohmann, O. Ingolfsson, D. Madison, and M. J. Brunger, Chem. Phys. Abstract:We present the result of our calculations of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) for cyclobutanone excited into the S2 electronic state, which is based on the non-adiabatic dynamics simulations with the Ab Initio Multiple Cloning (AIMC) method with the electronic structure calculated at the SA(3)-CASSCF(12,12)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The key features in the UED pattern were identified, which can be used to distinguish between the reaction pathways observed in the AIMC dynamics, although there is a significant overlap between representative signals due to the structural similarity of the products. The calculated UED pattern can be compared with the experiment.

Abstract:Low-dose, low-temperature kinematic and dynamical convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns from thin organic crystalline films have been used for the measurement of structure-factor amplitudes and phases. Kinematic conditions are identified by the observation of uniform intensity within the CBED discs and used to determine structure-factor magnitudes. CBED patterns from thicker regions affected by multiple scattering give structure-factor signs, which are varied for best fit. The use of a small probe (and the Kohler SAD mode) minimizes bending artifacts. A new method of thickness determination is evaluated. The approach is tested using experimental data from the centrosymmetric anthracene structure, the results compared with direct methods, and a potential map derived from experimental data. The faint peaks due to H-atom positions may be distinguished. Key issues influencing the validity of the method such as the appropriate dimension of the structure-factor matrix, sample thickness and crystal orientation are discussed.

Abstract:The dynamics of the ring opening in the state of cyclohexa-1,3-diene (CHD) is studied by a new direct mixed quantum-classical non-adiabatic dynamics approach which employs the decoherence-induced surface hopping based on the exact factorisation (DISH-XF) molecular dynamics method in connection with the state-interaction state-averaged spin-restricted ensemble-referenced Kohn–Sham (SI-SA-REKS, or SSR) electronic structure method. The critical species on the and PESs of CHD were studied using the SSR method and the minimum energy pathways (MEPs) were optimised. The obtained vertical excitation energies are in good agreement (within ca. 5–6 kcal/mol) with the experimental values. The optimised geometry of the / minimum energy conical intersection (MECI) agrees well with the previously obtained MSPT2 geometry. The DISH-XF/SSR non-adiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations of ring opening in CHD predict the exponential decay constant fs in a reasonable agreement with an experimental estimate (230±30 fs). The calculated product branching ratio (CHD:HT = 64:36) is in agreement with the recent experimental measurement (70:30). The NAMD trajectories are analysed in terms of the vibrational normal modes and the obtained branching ratio is explained by persistent stretching of the fissile bond when the trajectories propagate on the PES.

Abstract:Using the recently developed multistate mapping approach to surface hopping (multistate MASH) method combined with SA(3)-CASSCF(12,12)/aug-cc-pVDZ electronic structure calculations, the gas-phase isotropic ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) of cyclobutanone is predicted and analyzed. After excitation into the n-3s Rydberg state (S$_2$), cyclobutanone can relax through two S$_2$/S$_1$ conical intersections, one characterized by compression of the \ce{CO} bond, the other by dissociation of the $\mathrm{\alpha}$-CC bond. Subsequent transfer into the ground state (S$_0$) is then achieved via two additional S$_1$/S$_0$ conical intersections that lead to three reaction pathways: $\mathrm{\alpha}$ ring-opening, ethene/ketene production, and \ce{CO} liberation. The isotropic gas-phase UED signal is predicted from the multistate MASH simulations, allowing for a direct comparison to experimental data. This work, which is a contribution to the cyclobutanone prediction challenge, facilitates the identification of the main photoproducts in the UED signal and thereby emphasizes the importance of dynamics simulations for the interpretation of ultrafast experiments.

Abstract:A multimode Brownian oscillator model is employed to investigate absorption line shapes of rubrene in solutions and thin films. Excellent agreement has been obtained between simulated and measured absorption spectra. Furthermore, using the parameters obtained from the fitting absorption spectra of rubrene, the dynamics of singlet fission is explored by the Dirac–Frenkel time-dependent variation with multiple Davydov trial states. By comparing the absorption spectra between a conical intersection model and the multimode Brownian oscillator model, the optimal system–bath coupling parameter of <i>η</i> = 0.2 is determined, and ensuing population dynamics of the S1 state is found to concur with a previously proposed coherent singlet fission mechanism. We further simulate the two-dimensional spectra to reveal the wavepacket dynamics on both excited state and ground state potential energy surfaces. It is demonstrated that the wavepacket motion of tuning modes plays a significant role in the evolution of two-dimensional spectra.

We simulate the resulting time-resolved electron-diffraction spectra which track the relaxation of the excited state and the formation of various photoproducts in the ground-state.
