Abstract:Triple differential cross section measurements for the electron-impact ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of tetrahydropyran and 1,4-dioxane are presented. For each molecule, experimental measurements were performed using the (e,2e) technique in asymmetric coplanar kinematics with an incident electron energy of 250 eV and an ejected electron energy of 20 eV. With the scattered electrons being detected at -5 degrees, the angular distributions of the ejected electrons in the binary and recoil regions were observed. These measurements are compared with calculations performed within the molecular 3-body distorted wave model. Here, reasonable agreement was observed between the theoretical model and the experimental measurements. These measurements are compared with results from a recent study on tetrahydrofuran [ D. B. Jones, J. D. Builth-Williams, S. M. Bellm, L. Chiari, C. G. Ning, H. Chaluvadi, B. Lohmann, O. Ingolfsson, D. Madison, and M. J. Brunger, Chem. Phys. Abstract:We report an experimental and theoretical investigation into the dynamics of electron-impact ionization of the unresolved outermost molecular orbitals (6ag + 1b1g) of pyrazine (C4N2H4). Experimental triple differential cross sections (TDCS) are compared with cross sections calculated within a molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) framework. The M3DW theory was able to reproduce the qualitative scattering behaviour in the binary region, but failed to describe the absolute intensity of the TDCS and the recoil scattering behaviour. Momentum profiles were used to identify possible sources where the M3DW may mask the quantum character of the ionized orbitals in describing the ionization dynamics.

Abstract:The precisely defined geometry of phenylacetylene dendrimers and macrocycles makes it possible to investigate systematic variations in chemical architecture on the nature of microstructural organization. Here we report on transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy studies of crystalline phases of these synthetic materials. Since the molecules are sensitive to electron beam damage, low-dose techniques were used to capture images and diffraction patterns dynamically. The data show increased crystal misorientation with increasing side-group length and molecular complexity. As the size increases, the number of conformations available to the molecule also increases, making it difficult to pack the molecules with fewer defects.

Abstract:We report an experimental and theoretical investigation into the dynamics of electron-impact ionization of R-carvone. Experimental triple differential cross sections are obtained in asymmetric coplanar kinematic conditions for the ionization of the unresolved combination of the three outermost molecular orbitals (41a-39a) of R-carvone. These cross sections are compared with theoretical cross sections calculated within a molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) framework employing either a proper orientation average or orbital average to account for the random orientation of the molecule probed in the experiment. Here, we observe that the overall scattering behavior observed in the experiment is fairly well reproduced within the M3DW framework when implementing the proper average over orientations. The character of the ionized orbitals also provides some qualitative explanation for the observed scattering behavior. This represents substantial progress when trying to describe the scattering dynamics observed for larger molecules under intermediate-impact energy and asymmetric energy sharing scattering conditions.

Abstract:Cross-section data for electron impact induced ionization of bio-molecules are important for modelling the deposition of energy within a biological medium and for gaining knowledge of electron driven processes at the molecular level. Triply differential cross sections have been measured for the electron impact ionization of the outer valence 7b(2) and 10a(1) orbitals of pyrimidine, using the (e, 2e) technique. The measurements have been performed with coplanar asymmetric kinematics, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and ejected electron energy of 20 eV, for scattered electron angles of -5°, -10°, and -15°. The ejected electron angular range encompasses both the binary and recoil peaks in the triple differential cross section. Corresponding theoretical calculations have been performed using the molecular 3-body distorted wave model and are in reasonably good agreement with the present experiment.

Abstract:We present both experimental and theoretical results for the dissociative ionization of ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$ molecules induced by electron impact. Cross sections are determined in the molecular frame and are fully differential in the energies and emission angles of the dissociation fragments. Transitions are considered from the $X$${}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{g}{}^{+}$ electronic ground state of D${}_{2}$ to the $2s{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{g}$, $2p{\ensuremath{\pi}}_{u}$ and $2p{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{u}$ excited states of D${}_{2}{}^{+}$. The experimental results are compared to calculations performed within the molecular four-body distorted-wave framework to describe the multicenter nature of the scattering process. The cross sections reveal a dramatic dependence on both the alignment of the internuclear axis with respect to the direction of the projectile momentum and on the symmetry of the excited dissociating state which is energetically resolved.

Abstract:The electron impact mass spectra of several cyclic esters with helical structures have been studied. Their fragmentation pathways were proposed and confirmed by mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) and high-resolution data. In general, the dominant fragmentation pathways in the spectra of these compounds originate from a alpha-cleavage with loss of a hydrogen or methyl group. The difference between hydrogen and methyl group loss greatly affects the subsequent fragmentations. Although, due to their helicity, these cyclic esters are optically active no stereo-related fragmentation pathway was observed. Copyright 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The inner-valence ionization and fragmentation dynamics of CH4-C6H6dimer induced by 200 eV electron impact is studied utilizing a multi-particle coincidence momentum spectroscopy. The three-dimensional momentum vectors and kinetic energy release (KER) of the CH4++C6H6+ion pairs are obtained by coincident momentum measurement. Our analysis on the absolute cross sections indicates that the intermediate dication CH4+-C6H6+is preferentially produced by the removal of an inner-valence electron from CH4or C6H6and subsequent relaxation of ultrafast intermolecular Coulombic decay followed by two-body Coulomb explosion. Combining withab initiomolecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the real-time fragmentation dynamics including translational, vibrational and rotational motions are presented as a function of propagation time. The revealed fragmentation dynamics are expected to have a potential implication for crystal structure imaging with various radiation sources.

Abstract:We report theoretical studies of electron impact triple differential cross sections of two bio-molecules, pyrimidine and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, in the coplanar asymmetric kinematic conditions with the impact energy of 250 eV and ejected electron energy of 20 eV at three scattering angles of −5°, −10°, and −15°. Present multi-center distorted-wave method well describes the experimental data, which was obtained by performing (e, 2e) experiment. The calculations show that the secondary electron produced by the primary impact electron is strongly influenced by the molecular ionic multi-center potential, which must be considered when the low energy electron interacts with DNA analogues.

Abstract:Five compounds of 2,3-biarylimino-1,4-dithiacyclohexane were prepared by S-alkylation,the structure of them were analyzed by elemental analysis,IR(infrared),1H NMR(nuclear magnetic resonance) and MS(mass spectrometry) preliminarily,and further confirmed by X-ray diffraction.The 1H NMR,EIMS(electron impact mass spectrometry) specta of 2,3-biarylimino-1,4-dithiacyclohexane were studied in detail.The possible fragmentation mechanism for these compounds was proposed,and the EIMS characteristics of the title compounds have been summarized systematically.
Ultrafast Dynamics of 1,3-Cyclohexadiene in Highly Excited States

Abstract:The ultrafast dynamics of 1,3-cyclohexadiene has been investigated via structurally sensitive Rydberg electron binding energies and shown to differ upon excitation to the 1B state and the 3p Rydberg state. Excitation of the molecule with 4.63 eV photons into the ultrashort-lived 1B state yields the well-known ring opening to 1,3,5-hexatriene, while a 5.99 eV photon lifts the molecule directly into the 3p-Rydberg state. Excitation to 3p does not induce ring opening. In both experiments, time-dependent shifts of the Rydberg electron binding energy reflect the structural dynamics of the molecular core. Structural distortions associated with 3p-excitation cause a dynamical shift in the - and -binding energies by 10 and 26 meV/ps, respectively, whereas after excitation into 1B, more severe structural transformations along the ring-opening coordinate produce shifts at a rate of 40 to 60 meV/ps. The experiment validates photoionization-photoelectron spectroscopy via Rydberg states as a powerful technique to observe structural dynamics of polyatomic molecules.
Theoretical Prediction And Experimental Tests Of Conformational Switches In Transition States Of Diels-Alder And 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions To Enol Ethers

Abstract:Transition structures for the cycloadditions of butadiene, acrolein, nitrosoethylene, and methylenenitrone to 1-butene, silyl vinyl ether, and methyl vinyl ether have been located using ab initio RHF theory with the 3-21G basis set and with density functional theory using the Becke3LYP functional and the 6-31G* basis set. The computational results show that there is a snitch in the conformation of the enol ether from syn (COCC = 0 degrees), which is favored by 2.3 kcal/mol in the reactant, to anti (COCC = 180 degrees), which is favored by 1.2-6.6 kcal/mol in the various transition structures studied here. The results are consistent with the experimental stereoselectivities in reactions of chiral enol ethers observed by Denmark and Reissig. The preference of the anti conformation in the transition structures is due primarily to electrostatic effects and, to a lesser extent, steric effects. The preference is predicted to be influenced significantly by polar solvents. The magnitude of this preference was calculated theoretically and measured experimentally: the rates of cycloadditions of conformationally fixed enol ethers, 2,3-dihydrofuran and 2-methylenetetrahydrofuran, with 1-nitroso-1-phenylethylene and with C-benzoyl-N-phenylnitrone were studied. Observed relative rates are in good agreement with prediction and confirm that enol ethers adopt the s-trans conformation in transition states of cycloadditions.

Abstract:The present paper employed density function theory to investigate two reaction pathways for isomerization of enol ester proposed by Yang(path a) and the present authors(path a), respectively. The base catalytic effects of solvent triethylamine on these two reactions were also evaluated. It is demonstrated that path B is more preferable than path a due to low barrier height for the rate-determining step.

Abstract:This paper reports the structure and intermolecular potential energy curve (PEC) of heteroaromatic thiophene dimers obtained using a cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy reaction microscope. The threedimensional momenta and kinetic energy release (KER) of the C4H4S+ 4 H 4 S + + C4H4S+ 4 H 4 S + ion pairs are obtained by coincident momentum measurement. The two-body dissociation channel is initiated either by the rapid removal of one outer-valence electron from each thiophene molecule via sequential ionization or by intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD). Our analysis of the absolute cross sections indicates that the C4H4S+ 4 H 4 S + + C4H4S+ 4 H 4 S + ion pair is preferentially formed by the ICD process. The measured KER and PEC, accompanied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for three different types of conformers, enable us to clarify the minimum energy configuration of thiophene dimers in the gas phase. These results are helpful for our understanding of pi- pi and sigma- pi interactions within heteroaromatic ring complexes.
