Abstract:The paper summarizes the studies on urban village (chengzhongcun) in domestic and abroad from four perspectives including the concepts and definitions,the formation mechanism,the value orientations,and the renovation and reform strategies.Based on the summary,the paper states that a neutralized value orientation should be the logical starting point of analysis on urban village;the formation of urban village should be interpreted within the framework of "institution-action;" and the strategy of community management of urban village should be made from the angle of constructing city low-grade community and the restrictions of current institutions and various practical conditions.

Abstract:Architecture is a carrier of culture, as well as a product of one certain historical period. Influenced by the traditional culture over a long period of time, Huizhou folk houses have formed their own decorative design style with unique regional features. The article explores the design ideas on the decorative art of Huizhou ancient folk houses through formation and development of the decorative style, decorative characteristics, adornment subjects and decorative crafts. Based on it, the article excavates modern significance and value of the decorative art of Huizhou ancient folk houses, trying to get some references and enlightenments on modern architectural decorative design.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.

Abstract:Based on the literature review of CNKI database on rural settlements in China over the last three decades, the paper supplied a general comment on the main research contents and current situation of domestic rural settlement in China from the view of architecture as well as other related fields. On the base of the review, the paper made a conclusion on the systematization of the complicated rural settlement under different research penetrations, accompanied by an explic itassessment of the major theories and methodologies deployed in the field. After that, it conven iently put forward that the future study should be focused on emphasizing the broadening of interdisciplinary vision to make the research orientation more diversified, enhancing the quantitative research scope by computer to make the research contents more scientific and accurate, and instructing related design exploration to combine the research achievement and design practice more effectively.

Abstract:Abstract China has a lengthy and glorious history spanning thousands of years. Traditional dwellings represent distinct regional cultural origins, and different forms of housing constructions have arisen as a result. However, traditional dwellings preserve area culture and specific life memories as a fundamental component of rural life. From the perspective of conventional dwellings, this paper takes the representative Manchu folk houses in Northeast China as an example. It discusses the architectural structure, appearance style, and overall style of Manchu folk dwellings and the cultural dimension of architecture and its distinctive value under the impact of regional culture.

Abstract:In a transition from classic gardens to contemporary gardens,Jiangnan modern garden appeared in new form and system.This paper made an investigation on typical Wuxi modern gardens from 1840 to 1949,analyzing different types such as private garden,urban park,ancestral hall garden,and temple garden.Through case studies,characteristics and design principles on the location,mountain and water,architecture,plant of Wuxi modern gardens were discussed.Meanwhile,their historical context,formation of temporal-spatial character,transformation on function and style were summarized.

Abstract:The facade form of vernacular architecture is an outward manifestation of the building structure, which can easily give people an intuitive impression of the building. Most of the existing studies focus on analyzing the construction process and building materials of vernacular architecture in detail, but there are few studies on the characteristic elements in the form of architectural facades. The main objective of this study is to propose a new methodology for objectively analyzing the morphological characteristics of architectural facades with complex networks to support the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The results of the study show that the vernacular architectural facades in the Jiangnan region are characterized by the richness of details and distinctive layers and that the formal elements that can show the regional characteristics are preserved in the process of the sustainable development of vernacular architecture. The most crucial part of this is the roof shape, followed by the simplification of the detailing and how the vertical form elements are laid out horizontally. The article addresses the protection and continuity of vernacular architectural facade characteristics and proposes a strategic plan to strengthen the vernacular architectural facade characteristics in the Jiangnan region, aiming to protect the traditional characteristics and continue the traditional culture.

Abstract:[Objective] Through in-depth study of traditional Gan residential buildings, it is found that in China’s traditional culture, nature is more important than architecture. Many people believe that architecture is like a man-made natural object, which can make people return to a feeling of living in nature, and is also a state of ideal life for many residents in China. [Methods] By using the analysis method, it is found that the traditional residential building structure of Ganpai is a bucket structure. The basic unit is the ‘enter’ relationship, which combines the ‘enter’ relationship, the adjustment of column spacing and the reduction of column to form the ‘+ -’ relationship. Through this way, a unique architectural group layout can be formed. [Conclusion] Therefore, we should fully combine traditional materials with modern information means to improve our traditional technology, so as to keep pace with the times, keep pace with the times and keep pace with the times.

Abstract:Due to its special geographical conditions, Guangdong has absorbed the essence of the Central Plains Han culture and characteristics of foreign cultures, resulting in architecture in which traditional buildings exhibit unique regional cultural connotations. The architectural design is adapted to the needs of nature and ecology and the arts and humanities. This paper investigates the technical process of using local materials to obtain structural materials. Traditional Guangdong buildings use patios, cold alleys and doors as well as windows in a comprehensive manner to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly ventilation design, which was analyzed here. In addition, we study the floor plans and artistic characteristics of traditional buildings in different regions of Guangdong. Traditional Guangdong buildings realize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, as well as embody the concept of sustainable development. Traditional buildings integrate benefits and efficiency while condensing the surpassing wisdom and rich experience of craftsmen from ancient times to the present. Thus, it is worthwhile to research the connotation of traditional buildings to develop modern architectures.

Abstract:The United Nations and local governments have supported a four-point sustainable development framework, including environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. This study is based on the theoretical framework of sustainability to study the traditional Chinese siheyuan residence. Space syntax attempts to explain how spatial structures express social or cultural significance, such as the hierarchical relationship and privacy in it. The main purposes of this study are: (1) To analyze the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduce the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheyuans; (2) to compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses; (3) to explore how to integrate courtyard features into contemporary design and promote cultural sustainability. This study expounds the concept and application of syntactic analysis, and the relationship between the syntactic attributes of specific buildings in a particular area, and the culture and life of the local people within that area. As time goes by, the spatial form of houses has changed. However, in terms of spatial allocation index, the significant difference between traditional residences and modern residences lies in the integration and equivalence of all spaces in residences. We can learn from the cultural values of traditional siheyuans, meaning “people-oriented”, to rationally design modern residences with cultural connotations.

Abstract:Historic districts,considered as the main exhibition sites of the history and culture resources,are important for the stability of urban functions and cultural structure.According to the changes of policies and regulations and related academic studies,this paper categorizes the development of studies on historic district in China into three phases,namely the forming stage,preliminary development stage,and integrated development stage.It also reviews the theoretical development and main viewpoints about historic district from six aspects: definitions and characteristics,theoretical model,planning cases,public participation,economical attributes and tourism development.In the last part,this paper points out that there are some deficiencies of current studies in the aspects of humanism,intangible heritage and commercialization,and suggests that value evaluation,legislative affairs and new technologies has shown good prospects in the future studies.

Abstract:A traditional residence is not only a symbol of historic wisdom, but also represents the development of superior building experience. The weather in regions south of the Yangtze River is wet and hot; therefore, the local people have taken many effective measures to improve their indoor environment, such as the reasonable layout of windows, the effect of double pitch roofs and the effect of patio. This paper studied such natural ventilation measures, learning ventilation enhancement techniques from Chinese traditional architecture. The paper takes both a Chinese traditional architecture Shangzhi Tang and a typical modern building as research objects. A detailed field test was conducted and a series of evaluation indexes such as indoor and outdoor air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocities have been analysed. In addition, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software was utilized to simulate the air distribution for both building types.
