Abstract:Based on the literature review of CNKI database on rural settlements in China over the last three decades, the paper supplied a general comment on the main research contents and current situation of domestic rural settlement in China from the view of architecture as well as other related fields. On the base of the review, the paper made a conclusion on the systematization of the complicated rural settlement under different research penetrations, accompanied by an explic itassessment of the major theories and methodologies deployed in the field. After that, it conven iently put forward that the future study should be focused on emphasizing the broadening of interdisciplinary vision to make the research orientation more diversified, enhancing the quantitative research scope by computer to make the research contents more scientific and accurate, and instructing related design exploration to combine the research achievement and design practice more effectively.

Abstract:A typical traditional residence in Lishui,Zhejiang was chosen as objective in the paper.First the parameters such as temperature,humidity and wind speed were tested in summer and winter.Then the indoor thermal environment was evaluated with thermal comfort equation.At last the advantages and disadvantages on energy-saving building were analyzed and some appropriate improvements were proposed.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the origin and evolution of researches on rural homestead,and to figure out its development trend, in order to provide a basis for discovering research gaps and new research problems. Literature survey method, literature bibliometric analysis method are employed. Research results show that rural homestead researches can be divided into two parts: comprehensive researches and thematic researches. Comprehensive researches are composed with two sub-fields of homestead institutional change and property right system. Thematic researches can be further divided into five sub-sections, including homestead acquisition,circulation,mortgage,withdraw,and exchange. Currently, scientific researches in this field are over-concentrated in topics of homestead property right system,circulation,withdraw,exchange and so on. While, the research directions on homestead institutional change,acquisitions,mortgages and so on have not been received enough attention and need to be further explored.

Abstract:This study reviews and forecasts the study of rural residential areas,points out flaws in the existing studies,and predicts the key points in future studies.A comparative study was employed in this essay.Results indicate that existing studies of rural residential areas mainly focus on development trends,potential assessment,models and planning and driving forces and efficiency valuation.In the end,it is concluded that the studies regarding theories,regional difference,system constitution,peasant and government behaviors and interdisciplinary research shall be enhanced.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.

Abstract:Unlike residential settlements, Chinese traditional defensive settlements (CTDS) are fortress-shaped settlements built by forefathers to resist invasion and defend their homeland. What remains of these settlements today are not only unique defensive entities but also defensive spatial layouts and architectural techniques that reflect military defense strategies and spatial patterns of ancient Chinese society, resulting in a distinct cultural heritage. Using CiteSpace as a research tool and CNKI as a core database, this paper conducts a visual analysis and review of the research related to CTDS, aiming to accurately and intuitively elaborate on the literature distribution characteristics, collaborative characteristics, key issues, research trends, and research hotspots. We found that research on CTDS focuses on three key issues: the composition system and defense mode of northern defensive settlements, the architectural style and cultural characteristics of southern defensive dwellings, and the settlements' heritage conservation and development planning; and research trends can be divided into three phases. We also propose five future research recommendations. This study helps to fill the gap in the bibliometric review of Chinese traditional defensive settlements, serves as a reference for future priority research directions, and provides a manual for heritage conservation and sustainable development of this special type of settlement.

Abstract:This article sets foot on the phenomena of the desolation of German scholar Boerschmann’s books, based on part of the research information about Chinese architecture by foreign scholars in early 1900s,according to Bulletins of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture.It also makes primary contrast between the basic interest and value orientation of Study on history of Chinese architecture,reflected from the academic activities and essays by Liang Sicheng in 1930s,and the basic academic attitude and methodology related to Chinese architecture observed from part of the works by Boerschmann.It aims at specifying the unique reasons for the desolation of Boerschmann’s thoughts from the angle of the academic development of Chinese architecture,and meanwhile trimming and observing the early academic thoughts of Liang Sicheng to some degree.

Abstract:Studying the path of architects involved in rural construction in China can truly promote the sustainable development of the countryside and achieve the great strategic goal of rural revitalization. Based on the relevant literature, this study explores the differences between individual values involved in rural construction and the actual needs of the people, the problems caused by the imperfections of the existing rural environmental construction guarantee mechanism, the limitations of architects' intervention in rural construction, and puts forward the outlook:(1)Architects should return to the values of "vernacular" and consider the ways of intervening in rural construction from the three levels of technology, humanities and society. (2)Architects should guide the villagers to participate in rural construction throughout the whole process, give full play to the traditional construction techniques, and awaken the villagers' awareness of self-protection of traditional villages. (3)Establish a mutual cooperation mechanism to ensure that all parties' construction forces can exert their maximum effectiveness in rural construction. (4)Architects should fully consider the planning of industrial space suitable for regional ecology and culture, explore the dynamics of rural endogenous life, and combine the renewal of industry and social space to achieve sustainable development of the countryside.

Abstract:In China's rural renewal, the regional characteristics of rural traditional houses are often ignored. Local governments and real estate developers have distorted the perception of traditional buildings, damaging their sustainability. This paper analyzes the traditional rural houses of Jinhua and Quzhou, Zhejiang, China, based on space syntax. Its objective is to demonstrate concretely the regional characteristics of architecture through quantitative analysis. By summarizing the comparison of various variables, these characteristics can be further expressed. This will allow us to better understand the wishes of local residents for living space in a more accurate and quantified manner. As the subject of this study, 34 typical buildings are examined in 19 villages. According to the analysis of the RA, integration, and control values of space syntax, each room in these buildings is calculated. The courtyard, the hall, and the main room are chosen as the principal research areas. In addition, the exterior space is considered to be a key factor. As a result of this study, it is found that rural traditional houses in Jinhua and Quzhou have their own regional characteristics. These characteristics are presented as differences between the above-noted spaces in different comparative analyses and are consistent with the actual situation. It enables the rural traditional houses to be scientifically and quantitatively analyzed, which can be helpful for architectural renewal. As a consequence, it is possible to support the sustainability of rural buildings using data analysis, as well as safeguard the personalized rights and interests of local residents regarding housing.
