Abstract:Based on the literature review of CNKI database on rural settlements in China over the last three decades, the paper supplied a general comment on the main research contents and current situation of domestic rural settlement in China from the view of architecture as well as other related fields. On the base of the review, the paper made a conclusion on the systematization of the complicated rural settlement under different research penetrations, accompanied by an explic itassessment of the major theories and methodologies deployed in the field. After that, it conven iently put forward that the future study should be focused on emphasizing the broadening of interdisciplinary vision to make the research orientation more diversified, enhancing the quantitative research scope by computer to make the research contents more scientific and accurate, and instructing related design exploration to combine the research achievement and design practice more effectively.

Abstract:Human settlement is the basis of survival and development for human and its quality directly affects not only the physical and psychological health,and also the harmonious relations among population,social,environmental and resource.It is an important symbol of progress and civilization of the human society as well.In recent three decades,the world has been focusing widely on human settlements,but the regional comparative study is deficient.In this paper,based on brief review to researches,a framework of urban human settlements is proposed which possesses obvious regionality and harmonious human-earth relation.Based on matter-element analysis,fuzzy therory is applied to establish a fuzzy matter-element model for human settlements with friendly regional environment.Then the model is applied for empirical study on assessment of urban human settlements with human-earth harmony in prefecture-level cities of Sichuan Province.17 prefecture-level cities are ranked depending on their closeness degree.The result indicates that the method has certain theoretical value and maneuverability in regional human settlements assessment.

Abstract:Urban sprawl is a world phenomenon which has drawn the scholars' attention in China.This article starts with reviewing the definitions,characteristics, measurements,mechanisms and strategies of urban sprawl at home and abroad. Then,it attempts to give comprehensive assessments on the above works.Results show that:①existing researches in China mainly focused on the descriptive analysis, and lack of quantitative analysis;②studies in the West are diverse,but are so scattered that need to be integrated;③cities in China and in the western countries have many differences in many aspects,so Chinese studies about urban sprawl must consider the actual situation of our country;④domestic evaluations always used some indices to measure the effects of policies but couldn't combine it with GIS graphs ideally,therefore,it is needed to utilize western methods as a reference to rich our studies.

Abstract:Habitat is a leading topic for academic study in the world,and the Science of human settlements is composed of a disciplinary group.The paper summarized the Phase I work of the Urban Planning Establishment and Administration,which is one of the projects of the key disciplinary research group by Education Committee.Beijing 2049 is the primary platform for the interdisciplinary research project,as well as the fundamental study on urban development strategy of Beijing.The paper summarized the initiation,outline,goal,significance,methodology,and organization of the Beijing 2049 study,and analyzed the influences of Beijing 2049 on Beijing's long-term development from various spatial perspectives,such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region,Beijing-Tianjin-Langfang urban corridor,Beijing City Territory,and the Central City of Beijing.In addition,as the Old City is one of the focuses of Beijing 2049,the paper also analyzed the conditions and visions of the positive protection and integrated renovation of the Old City of Beijing.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the origin and evolution of researches on rural homestead,and to figure out its development trend, in order to provide a basis for discovering research gaps and new research problems. Literature survey method, literature bibliometric analysis method are employed. Research results show that rural homestead researches can be divided into two parts: comprehensive researches and thematic researches. Comprehensive researches are composed with two sub-fields of homestead institutional change and property right system. Thematic researches can be further divided into five sub-sections, including homestead acquisition,circulation,mortgage,withdraw,and exchange. Currently, scientific researches in this field are over-concentrated in topics of homestead property right system,circulation,withdraw,exchange and so on. While, the research directions on homestead institutional change,acquisitions,mortgages and so on have not been received enough attention and need to be further explored.

Abstract:To further promote the effective governance of rural human settlements in China, it is necessary to summarize and organize the research on rural human settlements that has been undertaken in the last decade. This paper analyzes the current status of rural human settlements research from the perspectives of Chinese literature and English literature. It takes the core documents included in WOS (Web of Science) and CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) as samples, and produces a visual analysis of the authors, institutions, disciplines, and research hotspots for rural human settlements research with the help of CiteSpace V and other measurement software, focus on identifying the similarities and differences between CNKI and WOS in the study of rural human settlements. The results show that the number of papers is increasing; cooperation between Chinese researchers and institutions needs to be further strengthened; the existing research has achieved interdisciplinary integration; the research hotspots are converging, but China pays more attention to the study of the hard environment, such as the macro level of rural human settlements and the natural ecological environments of residence, and lacks insight into the soft environment, such as the main body of residences, social relations, and individual needs in the urban fringe. This study is conducive to promoting the integrated development of urban and rural areas in China, promoting the revitalization and development of rural areas in China, and achieving social equity.

Abstract:In the process of rapid urbanization in the world, many villages are facing a series of problems such as depopulation, population ageing, insufficient infrastructure, and public service facilities. In order for better rural development and full implementation of the 2030 sustainable development goals, we should hammer at improving the rural human settlements. Based on the science of human settlements proposed by Constantinos Doxiadis, bibliometric analysis was made on studies related to rural human settlements in the last 25 years. Through analysis, we believe that the number of related studies will gradually increase. Currently, the improvement of the rural ecological environment and the creation of a healthy rural human settlement environment are two hot topics. It is very likely that these topics will also be highly focused in the following decades. With the gradual development of rural areas and the improvement of the material lives of people, more and more scholars will pay attention to higher-level demands such as rural cultural environment and self-realization of villagers. By reviewing literature related to rural human settlements, we can comprehensively consider different aspects in rural human settlements. This is quite beneficial for the comprehensive development of rural human settlements. Scholars in different countries have similar focuses related to rural human settlements. However, because of different country conditions, the focuses of researchers have some obvious differences. Relevant literature contributes to the development of the science of human settlements.

Abstract:Human settlement means all kinds of human living environments such as villages,towns,cities,and regions.It is the objective carrier for the social,economic,and cultural development.Urbanization is one of the most important processes of human settlement development.The urbanization in China is featured with high speed and large scale,resulting in a difficult situation for the construction of urban and rural human settlements in terms of resources and environment.In accordance with the feature of comprehensive coordination in human settlement development,the Sciences of Human Settlements suggests an integrated technical approach,which establishes the scientific research unity and forms an integrated research method,to coordinate the spatial development sequence and tackle with the contradiction between limited resources and the need of construction.Beijing 2049 is the multi-disciplinary research on the spatial development strategy for the 100 th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 2049.As a practice of the theory of the Sciences of Human Settlements,it explores the prospect of spatial development of the mega-city region of Beijing in 2049.

Abstract:The spatial form of traditional settlements is the exterior re? ection of their environment and long-time historic accumulation, the research on which has been paid attention in architecture field. This article interprets settlement spatial form in syntactical view to discuss its connotative culture and social nature. Spatial Syntax, as a social logic language to understand settlement space, reveals the interactive relationship between human social activity and spatial form, could quantitatively and accurately describe spatial structure form, and provides a new method and view for the research.

Abstract:With economic development and changes in the industrial structure of cities in China, the transformation of industries from agricultural to non-agricultural has brought about significant changes in the living spaces, economic growth, ideology, and cultural attitudes of rural people. Placing people first and responding to rural residents' wishes in the process of rapid development could become an important issue. This study focuses on the relationship between the well-being experience of relocated residents in rural areas and the public realm of new communities, and constructs a framework for understanding the relationship between the two. By doing so, it aims to resolve the conflict between the design of new settlements and the residents' needs, thus providing a reference for similar designs in the future.

Abstract:Unlike residential settlements, Chinese traditional defensive settlements (CTDS) are fortress-shaped settlements built by forefathers to resist invasion and defend their homeland. What remains of these settlements today are not only unique defensive entities but also defensive spatial layouts and architectural techniques that reflect military defense strategies and spatial patterns of ancient Chinese society, resulting in a distinct cultural heritage. Using CiteSpace as a research tool and CNKI as a core database, this paper conducts a visual analysis and review of the research related to CTDS, aiming to accurately and intuitively elaborate on the literature distribution characteristics, collaborative characteristics, key issues, research trends, and research hotspots. We found that research on CTDS focuses on three key issues: the composition system and defense mode of northern defensive settlements, the architectural style and cultural characteristics of southern defensive dwellings, and the settlements' heritage conservation and development planning; and research trends can be divided into three phases. We also propose five future research recommendations. This study helps to fill the gap in the bibliometric review of Chinese traditional defensive settlements, serves as a reference for future priority research directions, and provides a manual for heritage conservation and sustainable development of this special type of settlement.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the relevant papers of Chinese periodicals in CNKI database from 2000 to 2020 and the information visualization software Citespace, this paper makes a visual analysis on the research of Qiang settlement landscape in China. Through the analysis of the knowledge maps’ structure of the authors, publishers and keywords cooccurrence of the Qiang settlement landscape research, the results show increasing annual publications of such research and a lack of breadth and depth in the content. The results also suggest insufficient connection or integration between fields and disciplines. The research results will be presented in five aspects: local landscape, Qiang culture, architectural cultural area, post-disaster reconstruction and public space. According to the review of the research field, this paper puts forward the following prospects. First, expanding the research scale and the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Second, shifting the research focus to the human-land relationship and diversifying the research field of micro-analysis of spatial morphology by including intelligent management and development and utilization of settlements. Such efforts can provide further theoretical support for the protection, development and practice carried out in the Qiang settlement landscape of China, contributing to achieving the goal of rural revitalization and the implementation of the Beautiful China strategy.

Abstract:The current transformation of the countryside in the rural hinterland of Chinese city regions faces challenges in conserving an extensive architectural and landscape heritage. The villages situated in these regions represent the historical core of metropolitan areas. By examining the hinterland territories, we can readily recognize the features of the Chinese urban-rural continuum that G. W. Skinners has defined in his studies spanning from the 1940s to the 1970s on rural marketing networks, cities, and the hierarchy of the local system. These local systems present a morphology that continually adapts to geographical and cultural contexts, offering rich architectural and rural urbanism solutions that seamlessly harmonize the urban and rural functions. Today, this part of the settlement is extremely vulnerable to the pressure of urban expansion as towns evolve into cities and cities transform into metropolitan regions. The conventional top-down planning practice in these areas lacks innovative tools capable of integrating both “urban” and “rural” features simultaneously. Scholars such as M. Davis and G. Guldin have recognized the Chinese hybrid rural-urban settlement as a potentially “new form of settlement for humanity” (Guldin, 1997). In this article, we present a holistic design approach aimed at shaping this hybrid settlement into a “green city,” applying the model we first used in 2010 – 2013 in Huiyang in the Pearl River Delta, a region characterized by Hakka villages territorial system, to two other cases in city regions: Pidu in the Chengdu metropolitan area and Kandun in the Ningbo metropolitan area. These regions are characterized by their respective Lin Pan and Seawalls territorial systems, which we have more recently studied. The aim of the paper is to illustrate how drawing inspiration from local countryside architecture and rural urbanism enables the development of individual planning solutions as an alternative to the current planning practice in peri-urban rural areas, which tends to homogenize countryside landscapes to urban blocks.
