Abstract:Human settlement is the basis of survival and development for human and its quality directly affects not only the physical and psychological health,and also the harmonious relations among population,social,environmental and resource.It is an important symbol of progress and civilization of the human society as well.In recent three decades,the world has been focusing widely on human settlements,but the regional comparative study is deficient.In this paper,based on brief review to researches,a framework of urban human settlements is proposed which possesses obvious regionality and harmonious human-earth relation.Based on matter-element analysis,fuzzy therory is applied to establish a fuzzy matter-element model for human settlements with friendly regional environment.Then the model is applied for empirical study on assessment of urban human settlements with human-earth harmony in prefecture-level cities of Sichuan Province.17 prefecture-level cities are ranked depending on their closeness degree.The result indicates that the method has certain theoretical value and maneuverability in regional human settlements assessment.

Abstract:With the gradual development of the new rural construction, and the continuous improvement of the rural per capita living space, sustainable development of the rural living environment is becoming an increasingly urgent task. This paper selected three different terrain villages in the rural area of Hangzhou as a study object, which located in the Middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. Firstly, the investigation, collection and analysis on the building status, energy data and residents' subjective feeling of the three villages had been done through basic research and sampling questionnaire. Secondly, it selected two typical housing in each village, separately carried on the measurement of the building physical environment and computer quantitative simulation of the ventilation, lighting, and energy consumption, along with the comprehensive evaluation with the simulation results. Finally, the major existing problems of the living environment in the rural areas have been found, according to which some operable implementation strategy and policy Suggestions have been put forward.

Abstract:The hot summer and cold winter zone is an important area in China, accommodated with huge population and occupying a great amount of the lands. Due to the local climate and long-term economic conditions, the adaptive thermal sensation of local residents and the thermal regulation behaviors have unique characteristics. The thermal regulation behaviors involve complicated dynamic features and many influencing factors. However, due to the limited experimental testing conditions, it is greatly lack of relevant studies on the characteristics of different thermal regulation behaviors and their influences on both indoor thermal environment and the thermal comfort in this zone. Aiming at this, taking the residential buildings in Hangzhou city as the main object, a large-scale questionnaire surveys and measurements were conducted. The characteristics of various types of thermal regulation behaviors and the annual indoor thermal environment are analyzed. The effects of each regulation behavior on the indoor thermal environment and the adaptive thermal comfort are revealed. Rectified adaptive coefficients for the actual situation of Hangzhou residents are proposed and it is proved that the modified values can be used to evaluate the adaptive thermal sensation of the local residents more precise than the original ones used in the National Standard GB/T 50,785–2012. Incorporating the modified adaptive coefficient λ into the APMV model, the potential impact of summer ventilation on thermal comfort is quantified. The research results can provide theoretical support for the energy saving-oriented indoor thermal comfort research in the region.

Abstract:There are many rural building in China,most of them have high energy consumption without good energy saving design.The investigation of energy consumption in hot summer and cold winter regions is less than cold winter regions.Based on this current situation,questionnaires are delivered to three typical village.It is used to show the living environment and energy consumption in Hangzhou.Computer simulation and experiment are used to evaluate the living environment.Proper measure should be taken to improve the living environment of new countryside in Hangzhou.Furthermore,the achievement of the research will be beneficial to the development of Chinese new country construction.

Abstract:Residential environment is one of the most important elements for the quality of life, as well as the main support for the activities of economy, culture and society. However, the improvement of residential environmental quality also has been increasing the consumption of energy and the emission of pollutants. In this paper, first, a systematic methodology for the evaluation of sustainable residential environment is established, considering both the residential environmental quality (Q) and the residential environmental load (L). The part of Q is constructed by safety, health, amenity, convenience and community of residential environment. The part of L is about the environmental impact of the lifecycle of housing and community. Then, the region of Yangtze River Delta of China is selected as the research area, because it is the most highly-growing area of China and gives great influence on other cities. As the first part of the research, the authors performed questionnaire surveys in Hangzhou and Shanghai focusing on the residential environmental quality (Q), and analyzed the residential environmental satisfaction of people. In the next step, the study on the index part of environmental load (L) will be performed, and the weight of each factor will be determined. A desirability of the authors is to obtain the results contributing to the sustainable development and improvement of urban residential environment for the rapidly developing China.
The assessment on residential ecological environment in the central city of Hangzhou

Abstract:With the development of social economy and promotion of industrialization and urbanization, the urban ecological environment has been deteriorating. Therefore, more attention has been paid to the residential ecological environment. The assessment of residential ecological environment is crucial, as it can provide scientific basis for urban development planning, environmental planning, as well as the allocation of the urban real estate projects. Through principal component analysis, this paper developed a quantitative analysis on the quality and spatial pattern of residential ecological environment in the central city of Hangzhou. The results suggested that the residential ecological environmental quality decreased in a gradient from scenic tourist spot to urban central area and industrial area. Vegetation, traffic, land surface temperature, population density and air quality were key factors that had influenced residential ecological environment, and played an important role in determining the overall pattern of residential ecological environment. Meanwhile, industry density and water coverage had large impact on the residential ecological environment of some districts. As good residential ecological environment was important to strengthen the competitiveness of Hangzhou, measures need to be adopted to protect and repair fragile zones of residential ecological environment according to the characteristics of the key impact factors.

Abstract:Human activity recognition has been of interest in the field of urban planning. This paper established a general framework by which expected human activity intensity (HAI) measured by the built environment and factual HAI measured by the Baidu thermal chart were estimated and comparatively analyzed so as to identify abnormal human activities in Hanghzou, China. Three elements of the built environment (i.e., residential density, road connectivity, and land-use mixing degree) from multi-source data with high precision are selected to assess the expected HAI. Results indicate Hangzhou has evolved into a polycentric city with three urban clusters. In addition, a significant positive correlation exists between the two types of HAIs. However, there are areas with spatial mismatches, particularly in the "urban village" and new towns, suggesting human activities are not equally distributed all over the city. Research implications, limitations, and future research needs are discussed.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. Illustrating the relationship between past settlement changes and human-land could help us to understand the complex interactions among climate, human activities, and the environment. Based on archeological literature and fieldworks, this paper combines dating techniques and GIS analysis to explore the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and human diffusion of Neolithic settlements in the Western Guanzhong Basin (WGB), and to quantitatively analyzes the relationship between human activities and natural geographic factors by index model. The results show that: (1) There was a continuity of Neolithic cultures in the WGB and the absolute chronological sequence of human activities ranges from 7500 to 3900 a BP; (2) The distribution of settlements tends to be on river terraces and Loess tableland, and with the evolution of Neolithic cultures, human activities shifted from near-water to far-water distributions and expanded to areas of high gradient. The center of activity of the settlement spreads from a single nucleus (the Wei River) to multiple nuclei (the Wei River, the Qian Rivers, and the Qishui River) and back to a single nucleus on the northern bank of the Wei River in the area of present Qishan-Fufeng, laying the foundation for the development and strength of the Western Zhou Dynasty Cultures in this area; (3) The suitability level of the natural geographic environment in the WGB gradually decreased from the Wei River to the north and south, and settlements were mainly distributed in the highly and moderately suitable zones; (4) It was found that as early as the Neolithic period, mankind had already grasped certain laws of nature, and the spatial distribution of settlements reflected mankind's awareness of disaster avoidance and "compromise and reconciliation."

Human Settlement Analysis Based on Multi-Temporal Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study of Xuzhou City, China

Abstract:To evaluate urban human settlement, we propose a human settlement environment development index (HSEDI) model by choosing vegetation coverage, land surface temperature, impervious surfaces, slope, wetness, and water condition as the evaluation factors. We applied the proposed model to Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images from 1998 to 2010 and digital elevation model (DEM) data with a 30-m resolution were used to calculate the values of the six evaluation factors. The HSEDI value in Xuzhou City was found to be between 2.24 and 8.10 from 1998 to 2010, and it was further divided into five levels, uninhabitable, moderately uninhabitable, generally inhabitable, moderately inhabitable, and inhabitable. The best HSEDI value was in 2007. The generally inhabitable region was about 100.98 km(2), covering 30.87% of the total area in 2007; the moderately inhabitable region was about 170.58 km(2) covering 52.15% of the total area; the inhabitable region was about 32.03 km(2), covering 9.79% of the total area; the percentage of the uninhabitable region was zero; and that of the moderately uninhabitable region was very small, less than 1.00%. Moreover, we analyzed the habitability in the respect of spatial patterns and change detection. Results show that the degraded regions of habitability quality are mainly located in the urban fringe and the improved regions are mainly located in the main urban and rural areas. Reason for the degraded habitability quality is the rapid progress of urbanization. However, the increase in urban green spaces and the construction of the main urban area promoted the improved habitability quality. Besides, we further analyzed socio-economic and socio-demographic data to confirm the results of the habitability analysis. The results indicate that the human settlement in Xuzhou City is in a satisfactory condition, but some efforts should be made to control the possible uninhabitable and moderately uninhabitable regions, and to improve the quality of the generally inhabitable regions.
Environmental Suitability Evaluation for Human Settlements of Rural Residential Areas in Hengshui, Hebei Province

Abstract:To improve the development quality of rural residential areas in plain areas requires scientific evaluation. Based on the rural residential area in Hengshui City, Hebei Province, the study selected four indicators of location, production, ecology, and management, to build an evaluation model for the suitability of human settlements and evaluated rural residential areas in Hengshui City. The findings indicated the following: (1) The most suitable areas are mainly concentrated in the geographical center of Hengshui City. The generally suitable areas are mainly distributed in the east of the city. The basic suitable areas are scattered in the west and northeast of the city. The unsuitable areas are mainly concentrated in the north of the city. Most of the area of Hengshui City is suitable for the residence and development of rural residential areas, and 72.86% of rural residential areas are located in suitable areas, which is consistent with the geographical environment characteristics of plain areas. (2) The rural residential areas in unsuitable areas are mainly due to the low income, serious population loss and low urbanization rate, which are in line with the characteristics of rural residential areas. (3) The suitability of human settlements in rural residential areas in plain areas is mainly affected by the per capita agricultural land area, hydrology index, distance to river, distance to country, distance to a slow road, and distance to the fast road are low-level driving factors, of which distance to a fast road has the weakest influence. (4) There is a significant positive correlation between the environmental suitability and the distribution density of rural residential areas. The improvement of the suitability of human settlements can effectively promote the aggregation and distribution of rural residential areas. High-high clustering areas are mainly concentrated in the middle and northeast of Hengshui City, while low-low clustering areas are scattered in the north and southwest of Hengshui City. (5) The location index (LI) and management index (AI) play a limiting role in the suitability of human settlements in the northeast of Hengshui City, and the government should strengthen management intervention and infrastructure construction in the northeast of Hengshui City. The production index (PI) plays a limiting role in the suitability of human settlements in the west of Hengshui City and should consider the improvement of production capacity in the west of Hengshui City. The research results play a vital role in improving the carrying capacity of regional resources and the environment in the plain area, improving rural production, and living conditions, and promoting the development of rural planning in the whole region.

Abstract:The continuous development of urbanization in China has brought new opportunities to rural settlements but has also led to spatial problems such as disorderly layout and unbalanced morphological structures, and the sustainable development of the countryside faces great challenges. As the core spatial carrier of rural settlements, scientific identification of their characteristics and delineation of their types is conducive to the subsequent spatial optimization of rural settlements to promote the coordinated and orderly development of rural areas. In recent years, several studies have explored the characteristics and classification of rural settlements based on single factor influences, but few studies have comprehensively considered them from a multidimensional perspective. To fill this gap, this paper takes the rural settlements in the Weibei Plain as the research object, uses the continuous spectral transect analysis method, combines the landscape security pattern analysis, establishes a multidimensional feature matrix model, quantitatively analyzes the spatial differentiation characteristics, and classifies the types. The key findings are as follows. (1) According to the analysis of landscape security patterns, it was divided into four types of rural settlements. The rural settlements with high and medium security patterns accounted for 86.79%, and the overall ecological adaptability was good. (2) In terms of spatial distribution, 80% of patches in the Weihe River transect are small and unevenly distributed under the influence of river runoff, gradually changing from dense to discrete; the fluctuation range of the 70% patch area is restricted by the terrain in the Hanyuan tableland transect is small and changes from discrete to dense. In terms of spatial morphology, 70% of the Weihe River transect was irregular and varied greatly. The morphology of the Hanyuan tableland transect tended to be similar, and the degree of fragmentation of the Hanyuan tableland transect was higher than that of the Weihe River transect. (3) The Weihe River transect was divided into six types of settlement space, the Hanyuan tableland transect was divided into seven types, and the characteristics of different settlement space types were quite different. The results can provide a scientific basis for the spatial planning, industrial guidance, and facility layout of rural settlements and have important significance for the rational formulation of spatial agglomeration guidance strategies and the promotion of sustainable rural development in China.

Abstract:Human settlement environment is space places closely related to human production and life, and also surface spaces inseparable from human activities. As a coastal city in the east of China, Qingdao has a relatively high level of urbanization. However, it also along with many urban problems at the same time, among which the problem of human settlement environment has attracted more and more general attention from people. According to the characteristics of human settlement environment in Qingdao, the research constructs an index system with 10 index factors from natural factors and humanity factors, and proposes a comprehensive evaluation model. Evaluate and grade suitability of human settlement environment in Qingdao, explore the spatial aggregation and differentiation of the quality of human settlement environment, and reveal the internal connection of spatial evolution. The results indicate that the overall livability of Qingdao is relatively good, showing a multi-center and radial driving development. The distribution of livability is uneven, showing a decreasing spatial distribution law from the coast to the inland, and the quality of human settlement environment in Jiaozhou Bay and the coastal areas is relatively high. Qingdao is mainly based on natural livability, supplemented by humanity livability, compared with natural suitability, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of humanity livability have experienced three stages: rising-contradictory rising-harmonious rising. The quality of human settlement environment has obvious spatial correlation and is positively correlated with the degree of agglomeration, and the agglomeration of blocks with a higher quality of human settlement environment is higher than that of blocks with a lower level. The rule of human settlement environment changing over time is that areas with high quality of human settlement environment begin to shift from the city center to the north and the south, transforming into multi-point development, and overall environmental suitability has been improved. According to the results of the comprehensive evaluation, combined with its local development status and policies, the research puts forward developmental suggestions for the construction of human settlement environment in Qingdao, and provides decision-making basis for relevant departments to solve the problem of deterioration of human settlement environment.

Abstract:The suitability of human settlements is critical for quality of life and regional development. As comprehensive evaluations and research on the suitability of human settlements are lacking, a comprehensive evaluation of human settlements in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) was carried out in 2020 by combining natural and human environmental elements based on multi-source data such as digital elevation models, Landsat remote sensing images, meteorological station data, and points of interest, other multi-source data, and constructions of the human settlements' suitability indexes. The results showed the following: (1) The spatial suitability of the natural environment in the YRD is significantly affected by the topographic conditions and distance from the sea, showing an increasing spatial differentiation from southwest to northeast, with Shanghai and Yancheng having the best natural environment suitability. (2) The suitability of the human environment in urban areas is better than that in non-urban areas and shows a decreasing trend from the south to the north circle. Shanghai, Zhoushan, and Huaibei have the best human environment suitability. (3) The comprehensive suitability of human settlements includes both the spatial differentiation characteristics of the suitability of natural and human environments. Shanghai and Zhoushan have the mosy comprehensive suitability for human settlements, while Huaibei and Xuzhou have the worst. (4) Land with a comprehensive suitability for human settlements of greater than 0.580 accounts for 23.60% of the total and contains 30.08% of the population and 32.31% of the economy, indicating that areas with a high suitability index have been fully utilized, and the populations and economies with human settlements suitability have a high degree of matching.

Abstract:Human settlements have an important impact on human health, livability, and the economy, which has attracted widespread concern worldwide. Few studies have, however, paid attention to a comprehensive evaluation of urban and rural areas, as well as subjective and objective aspects. This paper evaluates four dimensions of urban–rural settlements in China, including environmental health, environmental tidiness, environmental amenity, and environmental support, from both subjective and objective perspectives. The findings are summarized as follows: (1) The quality of urban–rural human settlements in China has significantly improved over the last 20 years, and it shows a significant decreasing tendency from the southeastern coastal area to the northwestern inland area spatially. (2) The national average score of subjective estimation of human settlement is at the level of "Satisfied", and it displays significant disparities in terms of residents' attributes, such as occupation, age, education, and habitation. (3) The subjective evaluation and subjective well-being have a positive correlation regarding the comprehensive assessment of urban–rural human settlements, but there are significant differences in objective estimation to different sub-dimensions. Long-term follow-up investigation and evaluation should be the focus of future research. Findings provide scientific guidance for the optimization and improvement mechanism of urban–rural human settlements.
Exploring the effects of rural human settlement on rural development: Evidence from Xianju County in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:While boosting rural development, improvements in rural human settlements have become universal choices in many countries throughout the world. However, few studies have been devoted to in-depth exploration of the effects of rural human settlements on rural development. To fill in the research gap, this study firstly established a mechanism framework of the effects of human settlements on rural development, and proposed a hypothetical structural equation model of variables' interaction. The framework and model were further applied to a case study in a typical rural county in China with by using 370 household survey data. The results indicated that the effects of rural human settlements on rural development were a layer-by-layer processes with dynamic changes. The implementations of rural human settlement improvement projects can firstly stimulate qualitative changes of the three core factors in rural regional systems (namely population, land, and industry). The changes further bring a series of effects, such as scale effects, health promotion effects, factor mobility effects, and the like, thereby facilitating sustainable rural development. The results also confirmed that the overall impact of rural human settlements on rural development was dimensionally heterogeneous. The effects of the five aspects of human settlements exhibit an order of infrastructure conditions > natural environment conditions > public service levels > housing conditions > human social amenities. In general, this paper deepen the understanding of the drivers of high-quality rural development, and the results obtained in this investigation not only offer some new insights for rural planners and policymakers for better understanding the relationships between human settlements and rural development, but also provide scientific and useful guidance for beautiful countryside construction and rural revitalization.

Abstract:Traditional villages are invaluable cultural heritage sites in China, reflecting a rich historical and cultural legacy. However, rapid urbanization has led to the destruction and loss of numerous traditional villages. The remaining traditional villages also face challenges in preserving their original living environment. In order to assess human settlement suitability and identify potential factors, this paper proposes a village-scale model for assessing human settlement suitability. This paper used an eight-factor evaluation system, multi-criteria decision analysis and spatial visualization methods to evaluate the scores and spatial characteristics of human settlement suitability of 688 traditional villages in Hunan Province. This paper also examines the factors affecting cluster suitability using geographic detectors and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models. This study found that the quality of human settlement suitability varied widely. The overall quality is low and very few areas achieve medium or higher scores. Among them, the traditional villages in Huaihua city, Zhangjiajie junction, southern Hengyang city, northwestern Yongzhou city, central Chenzhou city and Changsha city exhibit higher scores. Secondly, the commercial facility density and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) are important factors driving the spatial changes. And there is a significant interaction effect between them. Additional factors impacting spatial variation include annual average temperature, per capita disposable income, and average house price. This comprehensive assessment reveals spatial characteristics and potential influencing factors. The results of the study provide an empirical basis and decision-making foundation for the protection and development of traditional villages, which will ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of China's rural areas.

Abstract:A large scale national survey of energy consumption and indoor environmental quality of China's rural housing was conducted during 2006-2007. The survey covered 15 provinces in Northern China and 9 provinces in Southern China. Survey data indicate that excessive building energy consumption and poor indoor environments pose significant challenges to China's rural housing. Possible causes are analyzed, the current status explained, and possible development trends predicted. Strategies for sustainable and environmentally appropriate energy development in rural areas are recommended.

Abstract:The rural human settlement is an important carrier for rural residents' production and living life, and its quality level is an important basis for judging the current living conditions of rural residents. This study aims to explore the spatial-temporal characteristics of the rural human settlement in mountainous counties of Zhejiang Province, as well the influencing factors, based on a constructed evaluation index system for a quality improvement in these areas. This study takes the rural human settlement of the mountainous counties in Zhejiang Province as the research object, constructs an evaluation index system of rural human settlement quality of these counties based on the current situation and development policies of Zhejiang Province, and evaluates the rural human settlement quality from 2016 to 2020. Further, spatial autocorrelation analysis, trend surface analysis, and other analysis methods are used to evaluate the results. The evaluation results were analyzed using spatial autocorrelation analysis and trend surface analysis, and the performance of each influencing factor and interaction force was detected using geographic probes. The study found that: (1) Overall, the quality of the rural human settlement in the mountainous counties of Zhejiang Province has been steadily improving over the past five years, and there is no obvious spatial correlation among counties, though the spatial development characteristics and development trend of the north is better than the south, and the east is better than the central areas. (2) Each subsystem also shows a steady increase and presents different spatial distribution characteristics. (3) The quality of the rural human settlement is significantly associated with policy orientation, the level of economic development, and landscape development characteristics. (4) The factors that currently have the greatest effect on the 26 counties include the level of agricultural modernization and economic development level, among which five groups of factors have an interactive effect. In sum, this study judged the development trend of rural human settlement quality and the main influencing factors in the mountainous counties of Zhejiang Province this year and provides a scientific basis for their improvement. It also provides research ideas for the evaluation and optimization of rural habitat quality in other mountainous counties in China.
