Abstract:The impacting and rebounding behaviors of straight elastic components are investigated and a unified approach is proposed to analytically predict the whole process of the collision and rebounding of straight elastic bars and beams after each of them impinges on ideal (massless) elastic spring(s). The mathematical problems with definitive solution are formulated, respectively, for both the constrained-motion and free-motion stages, and the method of mode superposition, which is concise and straightforward especially for long-time interaction and multiple collision cases, is successfully utilized by repeatedly altering boundary and initial conditions for these successive stages. These two stages happen alternatively and the collision process terminates when the constrained motion no longer occurs. In particular, three examples are investigated in detail; they are: a straight bar impinges on an ideal elastic spring along its axis, a straight beam vertically impinges on an ideal elastic spring at the beam's midpoint, and a straight beam vertically impinges on two ideal springs with the same stiffness at the beam's two ends. Numerical results show that the coefficient of restitution (COR) and the nondimensional rebounding time (NRT) only depend on the stiffness ratio between the ideal spring(s) and the elastic bar/beam. Collision happens only once for the straight bar impinging on spring, while multiple collisions occur for the straight beam impinging on springs in the cases with large stiffness ratio. Once multiple collisions occur, COR undergoes complicated fluctuation with the increase of stiffness ratio. Approximate analytical solutions (AASs) for COR and NRT under the cases of small stiffness ratio are all derived. Finally, to validate the proposed approach in practical collision problems, the influence of the springs' mass on the collision behavior is demonstrated through numerical simulation.
Collision and Rebound Behavior of Elastic Circular Ring Impinging on Elastic Column

Abstract:The work aims to investigate the collision and rebound behaviors of elastic thin-wall circular ring with low velocity impinging on ideal elastic column. In experimental tests, a high-speed digital microscope system was used to record the whole process of collision interaction of brass ring impinging on three kinds of elastic columns. In theoretical aspect, the modal superposition method and Lagrange equation method were applied to derive the governing equations of motion for the constrained motion stage and the free motion stage of the circular ring, respectively. The iterative relationship between the two sets of equations was then established, from which the whole process of collision interaction was described. The number of collisions increased and the non-dimensional rebounding time and coefficient of restitution decreased as the stiffness ratio increased. The critical stiffness ratio of multiple collisions increased with the increase of the thickness-radius ratio of the circular ring. The theoretical method successfully predicts the collision and rebound behaviors of elastic thin-wall circular ring with low velocity impinging on elastic column and can provide some theoretical guidance on the selection of geometric and material parameters in anti-collision structure and the selection of hammer head in experimental modal analysis.
A Close Examination on Inelastic Collision

Abstract:This paper examines the details of an inelastic collision when a bullet shoots a block vertically upward from below. With the assumption of constant interaction force between them, we obtain quantities of interest including the displacement for the block at the end of collision, the collision time, and in particular, the bullet's depth inside the block, which are not studied under the traditional assumption of very short collision time. We identify the condition under which the collision time can indeed be considered as negligibly short. The theory is applied to a well-known demonstration. Using the data extracted from photos of the demonstration, we calculate the magnitude of interaction force and the collision time, which can in no way be easily measured otherwise.

Abstract:This paper presents a full discussion on how to formulate and evaluate the problem of spatial impact with friction in multibody systems. By considering that impact is experiencing a very short but finite time, we have established the differential equations of motion with normal impulse as a 'time-like' independent differential variable to describe the process of impact. A reliable numerical formulation, which can deal with the complex motions appearing in impact such as slip, stick and resumption of slip, has been developed by using difference schemes. The results indicate that the formulation and the numerical method presented in this paper can well solve the problems of 3D impact with friction by a comparison with the theoretical results existing in literature.

Abstract:The object of this fundamental research will be to reveal the effects of variable coefficient of static friction on the static behavior of disc spring. On account of the complex relationship between friction and normal pressure, based on contact mechanics and fractal theory, a model for predicting variable coefficient of static friction of 3 D fractal surface is induced. Then the method proposed by Curti is improved by using the fractal coefficient of static friction to replace the Coulomb's law. The entire deflection range is considered under quasi-static loading condition. The model of disc spring is developed to predict the load-deflection and hysteresis characteristics while contacting with different fractal surfaces. The primary object of this study is to survey the variable static friction coefficient and its effect on the disc spring. Different fractal dimension, constant static friction coefficient and free height of disc spring are considered, and the relative error of the two methods are calculated. The investigation has revealed that the effect of fractal static friction coefficient on the load-deflection and hysteresis characteristics of disc spring is concentrated in the small deflection stage. And the method is universal for disc springs of different dimension on the same surface.

Abstract:Abstract The paper considers a model of a vertical double pendulum, which includes two balls suspended on rigid non-deformable threads to one centre of the suspension. For the proposed system of pendulums, differential equations of motion and conditions for collision of balls have been recorded. When simulating the motion of the pendulums, the central collision of the balls has been considered for various options of the motion of the suspension point: the suspension point is motionless; the suspension point oscillates in the vertical direction; the suspension point makes rotational motions in the vertical plane. Meanwhile, various conditions for the central collision between the balls have been considered: a perfectly inelastic collision; a perfectly elastic collision; a collision with transformation of collision energy (partially elastic collision). The results of numerical simulation are consistent with the behaviour of pendulums in real physical models, which makes it possible to simulate an elastic collision between balls when studying their acceleration in auto-balancing devices.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of a thin-walled hollow sphere colliding onto a rigid wall has been studied by experiments, numerical simulation and analytical modeling, as reported in our previous papers. In the present paper, the impact crushing of metallic thin-walled hollow spheres onto rigid plates and the subsequent rebound are analyzed using finite element method. The effects of hollow sphere's thickness-to-radius ratio, the material properties and the impact velocity on the dynamic responses are systematically investigated. The transition from axisymmetric dimpling to non-axisymmetric lobing is found to depend on the relative thickness of spheres and impact velocity; while the coefficient of restitution almost merely depends on impact velocity.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to implement and test the theory presented in a companion paper for the non-smooth dynamics exhibited in a bouncing dimer. Our approach revolves around the use of rigid body dynamics theory combined with constraint equations from the Coulomb's frictional law and the complementarity condition to identify the contact status of each contacting point. A set of impulsive differential equations based on Darboux–Keller shock dynamics is established that can deal with the complex behaviours involved in multiple collisions, such as the frictional effects, the local dissipation of energy at each contact point, and the dispersion of energy among various contact points. The paper will revisit the experimental phenomena found in Dorbolo et al . ( Dorbolo et al . 2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 , 044101), and then present a qualitative analysis based on the theory proposed in part I. The value of the static coefficient of friction between the plate and the dimer is successfully estimated, and found to be responsible for the formation of the drift motion of the bouncing dimer. Plenty of numerical simulations are carried out, and precise agreements are obtained by the comparisons with the experimental results.

Abstract:The differential equations for planar impacts reduce to an algebraic form, and can be easily solved. For three dimensional impacts with friction, there is no closed-form solution, and numerical integration is required due to the swerve behavior of tangential impulse during collisions. The dynamic governing equations in the impact process are built up in impulse space based on the Lagrangian equation in this paper. The coefficient of restitution defined by Poisson is used as the condition of impact termination. A valid numerical method for solving three-dimensional frictional impact of multi-rigid body system is established. The singular cases of tangential movement in sticking point are especially noticed and analyzed. Several examples are present to reveal the different kinds of tangential movement modes varied with the normal impulse during collision.

Abstract:Multiple impact and multiple contact problems are difficult, while using rigid dynamic theory. The rigid-solution may not be unique in some cases. The stiffness ratio and elastic vibration between different bodies can greatly influence the post-velocities of each body. In this paper, an effective theoretical method based on Hamilton space is developed to analyze the 3-ball system with multiple impact. By using the linear springs to model the compliance at each contact point, the strict theoretical solutions are obtained for this problem. The effects of various parameters, such as the mass ratio and stiffness ratio, on the separation behavior of each ball are carefully studied. The rigid-body solutions are some sort of limits of the theoretical results given in this paper. Meanwhile, the phenomena of internal impact between balls are revealed and the parametric area on α-γ plane is determined through analyzing the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper concerns a disc–ball system, in which a moving ball collides against a disc resting on a rough, fixed horizontal surface. The complexity in such a simple object is due to the presence of the line contact between the disc and the fixed plate, which significantly influences the impact-generated state of the disc. We deal with this problem in a uniform framework that encapsulates different structures of the mathematical model, including contacts, impacts, stick–slip in friction, as well as the transitions among different states of the variable-structure dynamics. We design specific experiments that provide useful information to help determine the macroscopic parameters in impact and friction. Other complicated cases concerned with the couplings between impacts and friction are theoretically and experimentally investigated. Excellent agreements between numerical and experimental results support our theoretical developments.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to show, through the planar rocking block example, that kinetic angles play a fundamental role in multiple impact with friction. Even in the presence of Coulomb friction, a critical kinetic angle theta(cr) is exhibited that allows one to split the blocks into two main classes: slender blocks with a kinetic angle larger than theta(cr), and flat blocks with a kinetic angle smaller than theta(cr). The value of theta(cr) varies with the friction value, but it is independent of the restitution coefficient (normal dissipation). Numerical results are obtained using a multiple impact law recently introduced by the authors. Some comparisons between numerical and experimental results that validate the used model and numerical scheme are presented. However, this paper is mainly based on numerical simulations.

Abstract:After flying out of muzzle,the bullet's large-scale displacement and its unsteady velocity are the difficult problems in the numerical simulation of muzzle.To solve the problem,local rememshing was applied to deal with the high-speed bullet,and the axis was defined as a special grid-deforming boundary so that the volume of the grids near the axis could not be negative.Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) formulation was used to solve the unsteady process of the bullet after it flied out of the muzzle.The result of the simulation indicates that the bullet accelerates first and then slowdown gradually.

Abstract:The paper considers a model of a vertical double pendulum with one suspension centre moving in a vertical plane. For the proposed system of pendulums, differential equations of motion and conditions for the collision of balls are obtained. When modelling the movement of pendulums, the central impact of the balls was considered for various variants of the movement of the suspension point: the suspension point oscillates in the vertical direction; the suspension point makes rotational movements in the vertical plane. In this case, various conditions of the central impact between the balls were considered: absolutely inelastic impact; absolutely elastic impact; impact with the transformation of impact energy (elastic impact). Comparison of the results of the numerical simulation and the results of experiments with the Kapitza pendulum in published sources confirmed the possibility of modelling an elastic impact between balls in a double pendulum and between balls in an autobalancer with a horizontal axis of rotation of the rotor.
Frictionless multiple impacts in multibody systems. I. Theoretical framework

Abstract:A new method is proposed that can deal with multi-impact problems and produce energetically consistent and unique post-impact velocities. A distributing law related to the energy dispersion is discovered by mapping the time scale into the impulsive scale for bodies composed of rate-independent materials. It indicates that the evolution of the kinetic energy during the impacts is closely associated with the relative contact stiffness and the relative potential energy stored at the contact points. This distributing law is combined with the Darboux - Keller method of taking the normal impulse as an independent ' time-like' variable, which obeys a guideline for the selection of an independent normal impulse. Local energy losses are modelled with energetic coefficients of restitution at each contact point. Theoretical developments are presented in the first part in this paper. The second part is dedicated to numerical simulations where numerous and accurate results prove the validity of the approach.

Abstract:The primary objective of this fundamental research is to investigate the mechanical properties of the disk spring when the friction at the contact edges is asymmetric and varies with the load. The contact mechanics study shows that the static friction and static friction coefficient on fractal surfaces change depending on the normal load. In this paper, a fractal contact model based on the W-M function is used to explore the connection between the static friction and the normal load. Subsequently, taking into account the asymmetry of the contact surface at the edge, the variable static friction coefficient is brought into the existing model to obtain an improved static model of the disk spring. Different fractal dimensions, frictional states and free heights are considered under quasi-static loading condition, the relative errors between this paper and the method using Coulomb friction are also calculated, and experimental validation was performed. The static stiffness and force hysteresis of the disk spring for different forms of asymmetric variable friction are discussed. It is shown that using the variable friction model can improve the computational accuracy of the disk spring model under small loads and help to improve the design and control accuracy of preload and vibration isolation equipment using the disk spring as a component.

Abstract:The onset of frictional motion couples complex spatiotemporal dynamics of discrete contacts with different orders of magnitude at time and length scales. In order to reveal how these individual scales affect the frictional sliding, we establish a 2D multiscale spring-block model for the frictional sliding at an elastic slider-rigid interface. In this model, the rupture of frictional interface is described by three different types of locally microscopic motion: pinned, sliding and dislocated states. By using realistic boundary conditions, our numerical results can precisely reproduce the loading curves found in previous experiments. The precursor events, corresponding to a discrete sequence of rapid crack-like fronts propagating partially in the contact zone, can also be shown in our simulation. From the analysis of the microscopic motion, we characterize the evolution of the real contact area and the corresponding interface motion at the mesoscale level, and show that the evolution corresponds to four distinct and inter-related phases: detachment, fast and slow slip motion, as well as the rest of slip. These mesoscale behaviors are completely consistent with the existing experimental results and their physical mechanisms can be explained by the detailed information of the numerical simulation. The study is established on a bottom-up multiscale model which provides a comprehensive picture about the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of frictional sliding.
Research in the Evaluating Methods of the Blind Area Radius of Missile Bullets

Abstract:The evaluating methods for the blind area of missile bullets are discussed. Blind area radius means the of a circular area (with center at the suppositional point of fall of the missile) that is not covered by the missile shot. A number of different approaches to calculate the blind area are employed: first, for the distribution function F(d) of the distance between the points of fall of the missile bullets and the center of the circle, taking R m to be a p-quantile ξ p of the distribution function F(d), and thus obtain the point estimate of R m, i.e. ξ p, by employing the moment method and the maximum likelihood method; further, deeming the blind area index R m to be a stochastic variable, and the minimum of each point of fall of the missile bullets to be the sample value; three types of point estimate of R m are obtained through some intuitionistic method. And for those point estimates, their distributions or approximate distributions are obtained. The confidence upper limits of the blind area R m are obtained by using the classical approach. Finally, a relevant instance is given as an illustration.
