Abstract:Landscape is one of the key notions in literature on biological processes and physics of complex systems with both deterministic and stochastic dynamics. The large deviation theory (LDT) provides a possible mathematical basis for the scientists' intuition. In terms of Freidlin-Wentzell's LDT, we discuss explicitly two issues in singularly perturbed stationary diffusion processes arisen from nonlinear differential equations: (1) For a process whose corresponding ordinary differential equation has a stable limit cycle, the stationary solution exhibits a clear separation of time scales: an exponential terms and an algebraic prefactor. The large deviation rate function attains its minimum zero on the entire stable limit cycle, while the leading term of the prefactor is inversely proportional to the velocity of the non-uniform periodic oscillation on the cycle. (2) For dynamics with multiple stable fixed points and saddles, there is in general a breakdown of detailed balance among the corresponding attractors. Two landscapes, a local and a global, arise in LDT, and a Markov jumping process with cycle flux emerges in the low-noise limit. A local landscape is pertinent to the transition rates between neighboring stable fixed points; and the global landscape defines a nonequilibrium steady state. There would be nondifferentiable points in the latter for a stationary dynamics with cycle flux. LDT serving as the mathematical foundation for emergent landscapes deserves further investigations. Abstract:Cyclic structure and dynamics are of great interest in both the fields of stochastic processes and nonequilibrium statistical physics. In this paper, we find a new symmetry of the Brownian motion named as the quasi-time-reversal invariance. It turns out that such an invariance of the Brownian motion is the key to prove the cycle symmetry for diffusion processes on the circle, which says that the distributions of the forming times of the forward and backward cycles, given that the corresponding cycle is formed earlier than the other, are exactly the same. With the aid of the cycle symmetry, we prove the strong law of large numbers, functional central limit theorem, and large deviation principle for the sample circulations and net circulations of diffusion processes on the circle. The cycle symmetry is further applied to obtain various types of fluctuation theorems for the sample circulations, net circulation, and entropy production rate.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of non-autonomous piecewise differential equations defined as follows: , where and each is real, 1-periodic, and smooth function. We deal with two basic problems related to their limit cycles . First, we prove that, for any given , there is no upper bound on the number of limit cycles of such equations. Second, we demonstrate that if do not change sign and have the same sign in the interval [0, 1], then the equation has at most two limit cycles. We provide a comprehensive analysis of all possible configurations of these limit cycles. In addition, we extend the result of at most two limit cycles to a broader class of general non-autonomous piecewise polynomial differential equations and offer a criterion for determining the uniqueness of the limit cycle within this class of equations.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a coupled system of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic coefficients in unbounded domains, including the whole space R-n, the exterior Omega(e) of a bounded domain and the half-space R-+(n) = {x = (x(1), . . . , x(n)) is an element of R-n; x(n) > 0}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that if the reaction function in the system possesses a mixed quasi monotone property and the corresponding periodic system has a pair of coupled upper and lower solutions then the periodic system has a pair of quasi-solutions and the sector between the quasi-solutions is an attractor of the system of periodic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some additional conditions this attractor leads to the asymptotic stability of a periodic solution for the periodic system. The approach to the problem is based on the method of upper and lower solutions, a ladder argument and a bootstrap technique. Finally, a competitor-competitor-mutualist model is given to illustrate the obtained results.
Stochastic limit-cycle oscillations of a nonlinear system under random perturbations

Abstract:Dynamical systems with $\epsilon$ small random perturbations appear in both continuous mechanical motions and discrete stochastic chemical kinetics. The present work provides a detailed analysis of the central limit theorem (CLT), with a time-inhomogeneous Gaussian process, near a deterministic limit cycle in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Based on the theory of random perturbations of dynamical systems and the WKB approximation respectively, results are developed in parallel from both standpoints of stochastic trajectories and transition probability density and their relations are elucidated. We show rigorously the correspondence between the local Gaussian fluctuations and the curvature of the large deviation rate function near its infimum, connecting the CLT and the large deviation principle of diffusion processes. We study uniform asymptotic behavior of stochastic limit cycles through the interchange of limits of time $t\to\infty$ and $\epsilon\to 0$. Three further characterizations of stochastic limit cycle oscillators are obtained: (i) An approximation of the probability flux near the cycle; (ii) Two special features of the vector field for the cyclic motion; (iii) A local entropy balance equation along the cycle with clear physical meanings. Lastly and different from the standard treatment, the origin of the $\epsilon$ in the theory is justified by a novel scaling hypothesis via constructing a sequence of stochastic differential equations.

Limit cycles as stationary states of an extended Harmonic Balance ansatz

Abstract:A limit cycle is a self-sustained periodic motion appearing in autonomous ordinary differential equations. As the period of the limit cycle is a-priori unknown, it is challenging to find them as stationary states of a rotating ansatz. Correspondingly, their study commonly relies on brute-force time-evolution or on circumstantial evidence such as instabilities of fixed points. Alas, such approaches are unable to account for the coexistence of multiple solutions, as they rely on specific initial conditions. Here, we develop a multifrequency rotating ansatz with which we find limit cycles as stationary states. We demonstrate our approach and its performance in the simplest case of the Van der Pol oscillator. Moving beyond the simplest example, we show that our method can capture the coexistence of all fixed-point attractors and limit cycles in a modified nonlinear Van der Pol oscillator. Our results facilitate the systematic mapping of out-of-equilibrium phase diagrams, with implications across all fields of natural science.

Abstract:In this paper, relations between the asymptotic behavior for a stochastic wave equation and a heat equation are considered. By introducing almost surely D–α-contracting property for random dynamical systems, we obtain a global random attractor of the stochastic wave equation νuttν+utν−Δuν+f(uν)=νW˙ endowed with Dirichlet boundary condition for any 0<ν⩽1. The upper semicontinuity of this global random attractor and the global attractor of the heat equation zt−Δz+f(z)=0 with Dirichlet boundary condition as ν goes to zero is investigated. Furthermore we show the stationary solutions of the stochastic wave equation converge in probability to some stationary solution of the heat equation.

Abstract:Many physical and biological systems exhibit intrinsic cyclic dynamics that are altered by random external perturbations. We examine continuous-time autonomous dynamical systems exhibiting a stable limit cycle, perturbed by additive Gaussian white noise. We derive a formal approximation for the dynamics of sample paths that stay close to the limit cycle, in terms of a phase coordinate and a deviation perpendicular to the limit cycle. To leading order in the deviation, the phase advances at the deterministic speed superimposed by a Brownian-motion-like drift. The deviation itself takes the form of an (n-1)-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We apply these results to the case of limit cycles emerging through a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, which is widespread in ecological and epidemiological models. We derive approximation formulas for the system's stationary autocovariance and power spectral density. The latter two reflect the effects of perturbations on the temporal coherence and spectral bandwidth of perturbed limit cycles. We verify our results using numerical simulations and exemplify their application to the El Niño Southern Oscillation.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the spectral theory of functions and properties of evolution semigroups, we establish conditions on the existence, and uniqueness of asymptotic 1-periodic solutions to a class of abstract differential equations with infinite delay of the form \begin{equation*} \frac{d u(t)}{d t}=A u(t)+L(u_t)+f(t) \end{equation*} where $A$ is the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators, $L$ is a bounded linear operator from a phase space $\mathscr{B}$ to a Banach space $X$, $u_t$ is an element of $\mathscr{B}$ which is defined as $u_t(\theta)=u(t+\theta)$ for $\theta \leq 0$ and $f$ is asymptotic 1-periodic in the sense that $\lim\limits_{t \rightarrow \infty}(f(t+1)-$ $f(t))=0$. A Lotka-Volterra model with diffusion and infinite delay is considered to illustrate our results.

Abstract:The asymptotic limit of the nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson system with general WKB initial data is studied in this paper. It is proved that the current, defined by the smooth solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson system, converges to the strong solution of the incompressible Euler equations plus a term of fast singular oscillating gradient vector fields when both the Planck constant (sic) and the Debye length lambda tend to zero. The proof involves homogenization techniques, theories of symmetric quasilinear hyperbolic system and elliptic estimates, and the key point is to establish the uniformly bounded estimates with respect to both the Planck constant and the Debye length.

Abstract:In this paper, we concentrate on the propagation dynamics of stochastic reaction–diffusion equations, including the existence of travelling wave solution and asymptotic wave speed. Based on the stochastic Feynman–Kac formula and comparison principle, the boundedness of the solution of stochastic reaction–diffusion equations can be obtained so that we can construct a sup-solution and a sub-solution to estimate the upper bound and the lower bound of wave speed.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a semilinear non-autonomous wave equation with distributed delay and analytic nonlinearity. The distributed delay is represented by an integral operator integrating on the delay interval, which considers a segment of the past dynamic information. Firstly we show the global boundedness of solutions and then prove that every globally bounded solution has a relative compact range in the phase space. By the Łojasiewicz–Simon inequality, we prove the convergence to an equilibrium of globally bounded solutions and then show the convergence rate dependence on the Łojasiewicz exponent and the decay conditions on non-autonomous term. The existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution is finally proved. Note that the result of existence and uniqueness of the solution does not need any restrictions on the coefficients between the damping and the delay. The presence of an integral kernel makes distributed delays more difficult to be analyzed compared to its pointwise counterpart.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the singular limit dynamics of two wave equations connected in parallel when the spring coefficient α$$\alpha $$ tends to infinity. Firstly, we prove the existence, finiteness of fractal dimension and smoothness of global attractors. We establishes that the singular limit of two wave equations connected in parallel is a single wave equation when α→+∞$$\alpha \rightarrow +\infty $$. We also prove of upper-semicontinuity of global attractors when α→+∞$$\alpha \rightarrow +\infty $$.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the Sobolev-type stochastic differential equations with Lévy noise and mixed fractional Brownian motion. Applying a method (principle) of comparability of functions by character of Shcherbakov recurrence, it characters at least one (or exactly one) solution with the same properties as the coefficients of the equation. We establish the existence of Poisson stable solutions for the Sobolev-type equation, which includes periodic solutions, quasi-periodic solutions, almost periodic solutions, almost automorphic solutions, etc. We also obtain the global asymptotical stability of bounded Poisson stable solutions and present an example to illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic limit problem on the relativistic Euler–Poisson equations. Under the assumptions of both the initial data being the small perturbation of the given steady state solution and the boundary strength being suitably small, we have the following results: (i) the global smooth solution of the relativistic Euler–Poisson equation converges to the solution of the drift-diffusion equations provided the light speed c and the relaxation time τ satisfying c=τ−1/2 when the relaxation time τ tends to zero; (ii) the global smooth solution of the relativistic Euler–Poisson equations converges to the subsonic global smooth solution of the unipolar hydrodynamic model for semiconductors when the light speed c→∞. In addition, the related convergence rate results are also obtained.

Abstract:We study a limit behavior of a sequence of Markov processes (or Markov chains) such that their distributions outside of any neighborhood of a "singular" point attract to some probability law. In any neighborhood of this point the behavior may be irregular. As an example of the general result we consider a symmetric random walk with the unit jump that is perturbed in a neighborhood of 0. The invariance principle is obtained under standard scaling of time and space. The limit process turns out to be a skew Brownian motion.
