Abstract:Results of investigation of the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problems for a quasi-linear parabolic equation with a small parameter at a higher derivative near singular points of limit solutions are presented. Interest to the problem under consideration is explained by its applications to a wide class of physical systems and probabilistic processes such as acoustic waves in fluid and gas, hydrodynamical turbulence and nonlinear diffusion. The following cases are considered: a singularity generated by a jump discontinuity of the initial function, collision of two shock waves, gradient catastrophe, transition of a weak discontinuity into a shock wave, a singularity generated by a large initial gradient.

Abstract:Approximation methods for boundary problems for a fourth-order singularly perturbed partial differential equation (PDE) are studied. Using a suitable variable change, we reduce the problem to a second-order PDE system with coupled boundary conditions. Taking into account asymptotic expansions of the solutions, we discrete the resulting problem by a tailored finite point method. It is proved that the scheme converges uniformly with respect to the small parameter involved. Numerical results are consistent with the theoretical findings.

Abstract:We consider singularly perturbed operator differential transport equations of a special form in the case where the transport operator acts on space–time variables; a linear operator acting on an additional variable describes the interaction that "scrambles" the solution with respect to that variable. We construct a formal asymptotic expansion of the solution of the Cauchy problem for a singularly perturbed operator differential transport equation with small nonlinearity and weak diffusion in the case of several spatial variables. Under some conditions assumed for these problems, the leading term of the asymptotics is described by a quasilinear parabolic equation. The remainder term is estimated with respect to the residual under certain conditions.

Abstract:An asymptotic expansion with respect to a small parameter of the solution of the Cauchy problem is constructed for a system of three transfer equations, two of which are singularly perturbed by the degeneracy of the entire senior part of the transfer operator, and the third equation clearly does not contain a small parameter. The peculiarity of the problem is that it belongs to the so-called critical case: the solution of a degenerate problem is a one-parameter family. The asymptotic expansion of the solution under smooth initial conditions is constructed as the sum of the regular part and boundary functions.

Abstract:We present the sharp characterization of the behavior at the isolated singularities of positive solutions of some equations on singular manifolds with conical metrics. It is seen that the equations on singular manifolds with conical metrics are equivalent to weighted elliptic equations in B\{0}, where B subset of R-N is the unit ball. The weights can be singular at x = 0. We present the sharp asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the weighted elliptic equations at x = 0 and establish expansions of these solutions up to arbitrary orders. Asymptotic behavior at the isolated singularitie of positive solutions of elliptic equations without weights has been studied by many authors. We will obtain new results on the asymptotic behavior at the isolated singularities even for positive solutions of equations without weights in the subcritical case.

Abstract:We study structure of nontrivial nonnegative solutions for a class of singularly perturbed quasilinear Dirichlet problems. It is shown that there are infinitely many least-energy solutions and they are spike-layer solutions. Moreover, the measure of each spike-layer is estimated as the parameter epsilon tends to 0. Abstract:We investigate slowly converging solutions for non-linear evolution equations of elliptic or parabolic type. These equations arise from the study of isolated singularities in geometric variational problems. Slowly converging solutions have previously been constructed assuming the Adams-Simon positivity condition. In this study, we identify a necessary condition for slowly converging solutions to exist, which we refer to as the Adams-Simon non-negativity condition. Additionally, we characterize the rate and direction of convergence for these solutions. Our result partially confirms Thom's gradient conjecture in the context of infinite-dimensional problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the biharmonic equation $$ \Delta^2 u = u^p~~~~~~~in ~ B_1 \backslash \{0\}$$ with an isolated singularity, where the punctured ball $B_1 \backslash \{0\} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 5$ and $\frac{n}{n-4} < p < \frac{n+4}{n-4}$. This equation is relevant for the $Q$-curvature problem in conformal geometry. We classify isolated singularities of positive solutions and describe the asymptotic behavior of positive singular solutions without the sign assumption for $-\Delta u$. We also give a new method to prove removable singularity theorem for nonlinear higher order equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we will analyze the blow-up behaviors for solutions to the Laplacian equation with exponential Neumann boundary condition. In particular, the boundary value is with a kind of singular data. We show a Brezis–Merle type concentration-compactness theorem, calculate the blow up value at the blow-up point, and give a point-wise estimate for the profile of the solution sequence at the blow-up point.

Abstract:The structure of non-trivial non-negative solutions to singularly perturbed semilinear Dirichlet problems of the form −ε2Δu = f(u) in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, Ω ⊂ RN a bounded smooth domain, is studied as ε → 0+, for a class of nonlinearities f(u) satisfying f(0) = f(z1) = f(z2) = 0 with 0 < z1 < z2, f < 0 in (0, z1), f > 0 in (z1, z2) and . It is shown that there are many non-trivial non-negative solutions and they are spike-layer solutions. Moreover, the measure of each spike layer is estimated as ε → 0+. These results are applied to the study of the structure of positive solutions of the same problems with f changing sign many times in (0, ∞). Uniqueness of a large positive solution and many positive intermediate spike-layer solutions are obtained for ε sufficiently small.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic analysis and numerical method for singularly perturbed eigenvalue problems (SPEPs). We first make a close asymptotic analysis of the SPEP and prove that, for piecewise smooth potential functions V(x), the eigenvalues converge to the minimum value of V(x), and the eigenfunctions are concentrated in the immediate vicinity of the minimal points of V(x) as epsilon -> 0(+). Then we propose some new schemes based on the tailored finite point method (TFPM) for numerical solutions of SPEPs with higher accuracy. Our numerical examples verify our theory and show the feasibility and efficiency of our TFPM.
Asymptotic analysis for the generalized Langevin equation with singular potentials

Abstract:We consider a system of interacting particles governed by the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) in the presence of external confining potentials, singular repulsive forces, as well as memory kernels. Using a Mori-Zwanzig approach, we represent the system by a class of Markovian dynamics. Under a general set of conditions on the nonlinearities, we study the large-time asymptotics of the multi-particle Markovian GLEs. We show that the system is always exponentially attractive toward the unique invariant Gibbs probability measure. The proof relies on a novel construction of Lyapunov functions. We then establish the validity of the small mass approximation for the solutions by an appropriate equation on any finite-time window. Important examples of singular potentials in our results include the Lennard-Jones and Coulomb functions.
