Abstract:This paper deals with the existence of limit cycles of the following nonlinear differential system. We obtain two sufficient conditions for the existence of limit cycles surrounding multiple singular points of the system. The results generalize the corresponding results in [1,2,3], and correct the negligences appeared in [2,3,4,5].

Abstract:We consider three classes of polynomial differential equations of the form (x) over dot = -y + P-n(x, y), (y) over dot = x + Q(n) (x, y), where P-n and Q(n) are homogeneous polynomials of degree n, having a non-Hamiltonian centre at the origin. By using a method different from the classical ones, we study the limit cycles that bifurcate from the periodic orbits of such centres when we perturb them inside the class of all polynomial differential systems of the above form. A more detailed study is made for the particular cases of degree n = 2 and n = 3.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of non-autonomous piecewise differential equations defined as follows: , where and each is real, 1-periodic, and smooth function. We deal with two basic problems related to their limit cycles . First, we prove that, for any given , there is no upper bound on the number of limit cycles of such equations. Second, we demonstrate that if do not change sign and have the same sign in the interval [0, 1], then the equation has at most two limit cycles. We provide a comprehensive analysis of all possible configurations of these limit cycles. In addition, we extend the result of at most two limit cycles to a broader class of general non-autonomous piecewise polynomial differential equations and offer a criterion for determining the uniqueness of the limit cycle within this class of equations.

Abstract:This paper investigates the nonexistence of a specific kind of periodic solutions in a class of nonlinear dynamical systems with cylindrical phase space. Those types of systems can be viewed as an interconnection of several simpler subsystems with the interconnecting structure specified by a permutation matrix. Frequency-domain conditions as well as linear matrix inequalities conditions for nonexistence of limit cycles of the second kind are established. The main results also define the frequency range on which cycles of the second kind of the system cannot exist. Based on this LMI approach, an estimate of the frequency of cycles of the second kind can be explicitly computed by solving a generalized eigenvalue minimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate the applicability and validity of the proposed method and show the effect of nonlinear interconnections on dynamical behavior of entire interconnected systems.

Abstract:We prove that perturbing the periodic annulus of the reversible quadratic polynomial differential system $\dot x=y+ax^2$ , $\dot y=-x$ with a ≠ 0 inside the class of all quadratic polynomial differential systems we can obtain at most two limit cycles, including their multiplicities. Since the first integral of the unperturbed system contains an exponential function, the traditional methods cannot be applied, except in Figuerasa, Tucker and Villadelprat (2013, J. Diff. Equ. , 254 , 3647–3663) a computer-assisted method was used. In this paper, we provide a method for studying the problem. This is also the first purely mathematical proof of the conjecture formulated by Dumortier and Roussarie (2009, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. , 2 , 723–781) for q ⩽ 2. The method may be used in other problems.

Abstract:We consider the class of polynomial dierential equations ˙ x = ¡y + Pn(x;y), ˙ y = x + Qn(x;y), where Pn and Qn are homogeneous polynomials of degree n. Inside this class we identify a new subclass of systems having a center at the origin. We show that this subclass contains at least two subfamilies of isochronous centers. By using a method dierent from the classical ones, we study the limit cycles that bifurcate from the periodic orbits of such centers when we perturb them inside the class of all polynomial dierential systems of the above form. In particular, we present a function whose simple zeros correspond to the limit cycles which bifurcate from the periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems.

The second part of Problem 3 is about whether the limit cycle of a quasi-homogeneous system $ \dot{x}=y,\; \dot{y}=-x^3+\alpha x^2y+y^3 $ is unique. In this paper, we give a positive answer to this question by analysing the uniqueness of the heteroclinic separatrix at infinity.

Abstract:During the last decades, the study of discontinuous piecewise differential systems has become an interesting subject of research due to the important applications of this kind of systems to model natural phenomena. In the qualitative theory of differential equations, one of the interesting problems is the detection of the number of limit cycles and their configurations which remains open to date, except for very particular families of differential equations. Here, we are inspired to study the maximum number of limit cycles of the discontinuous piecewise differential systems separated by a nonregular line and formed by a linear center and one of the four classes of quadratic centers. The main tool used to prove our main results is based on the first integrals of such systems. All the computations of this paper are verified using the algebraic manipulator Mathematica.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from the periodic annulus of the linear center for discontinuous piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with four zones separated by two nonlinear curves . By analyzing the first order averaged function, we prove that at most 7 crossing limit cycles can produce from periodic annulus of the linear center, and the upper bound is reached. In addition, under particular conditions, we obtain that at least 8 crossing limit cycles can bifurcate from periodic annulus in this class of systems by using the second order averaged function. Our results show that multiple switching curves increase the number of crossing limit cycles in comparison with the case where there is only a single switching curve.

Abstract:This paper studies the number of limit cycles that may bifurcate from an equilibrium of an autonomous system of differential equations. The system in question is assumed to be of dimension $n$, have a zero-Hopf equilibrium at the origin, and consist only of homogeneous terms of order $m$. Denote by $H_k(n,m)$ the maximum number of limit cycles of the system that can be detected by using the averaging method of order $k$. We prove that $H_1(n,m)\leq(m-1)\cdot m^{n-2}$ and $H_k(n,m)\leq(km)^{n-1}$ for generic $n\geq3$, $m\geq2$ and $k>1$. The exact numbers of $H_k(n,m)$ or tight bounds on the numbers are determined by computing the mixed volumes of some polynomial systems obtained from the averaged functions. Based on symbolic and algebraic computation, a general and algorithmic approach is proposed to derive sufficient conditions for a given differential system to have a prescribed number of limit cycles. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by a family of third-order differential equations and by a four-dimensional hyperchaotic differential system.

Abstract:Because of their applications, the study of piecewise-linear differential systems has become increasingly important in recent years. This type of system already exists to model many different natural phenomena in physics, biology, economics, etc. As is well known, the study of the qualitative theory of piecewise differential systems focuses mainly on limit cycles. Most papers studying the problem of existence and the maximum number of limit cycles of piecewise differential systems have precisely considered planar systems. However, few papers have examined this problem in [Formula: see text]. In this paper, our main goal is to examine a class of discontinuous piecewise differential systems in [Formula: see text], where we consider the unit sphere as the separation surface that divides the entire space into two regions, each one has a linear vector field analogous to planar center. In general, it is hard to determine an exact upper bound for the number of limit cycles that a class of differential systems can exhibit. We prove that this class of differential systems can have at most four limit cycles. We show that there are examples of such differential systems with exactly 1, 2, 3 and 4 limit cycles.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles of a piecewise smooth differential system separated by one or two parallel straight lines or rays formed by a nilpotent center or degenerate center and linear saddle. Piecewise linear differential systems separated by one or two parallel straight lines with one of the subsystems of type nilpotent center and other subsystems of type linear saddle can have at most two limit cycles and there are systems in these classes having one limit cycle. The limit cycle in particular consists of saddle separatrices of the subsystem.

Using the Chebyshev theory we prove that the maximum number of hyperbolic limit cycles which can bifurcate from these periodic orbits is exactly 8 using the averaging theory of first order. For this class of discontinuous piecewise differential systems we obtain three more limit cycles than the line of discontinuity is regular, i.e., the case of where the two rays form an angle α=π .

Abstract:In our previous work, we have studied the limit cycles for a class of discontinuous piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with a non-regular line of discontinuity, which is formed by two rays starting from the origin and forming an angle . The unperturbed system is the quadratic uniform isochronous center , with a family of periodic orbits surrounding the origin. In this paper, we continue to investigate this kind of piecewise differential systems, but now the angle between the two rays is . Using the Chebyshev theory, we prove that the maximum number of hyperbolic limit cycles that can bifurcate from these periodic orbits using the averaging theory of first order is exactly 8 for . Together with our previous work, which concerns on the case of , we can conclude that using the averaging theory of first order the maximum number of hyperbolic limit cycles is exactly 8, when this quadratic center is perturbed inside the above-mentioned classes separated by a non-regular line of discontinuity with .

Abstract:This paper considers the existence of cycles of the second kind in uncertain pendulum-like systems with several nonlinearities. Based on Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma, which establishes the equivalence between frequency domain inequalities (FDIs) and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), LMI conditions guaranteeing the existence of cycles of the second kind for such nonlinear systems under parameter uncertainties are established. In virtue of the results, an interesting conclusion is reached that synthesis problem ensuring the existence of cycles of the second kind for such uncertain nonlinear system can be converted into synthesis problem for a system without uncertainties. A practical example about synchronous machine demonstrates the validity of the present approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum number of limit cycles where planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems can exist formed by three regions separated by a nonregular line. We show that such discontinuous piecewise linear systems can have at most five limit cycles, two of which are of the four intersection points type, the third one is of the two intersection points type and the other two are of three intersection points type. In a setting, we have solved the extended 16th Hilbert problem for these discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems.

Abstract:For a famous cubic system given by James and Lloyd, there exist some sufficient conditions such that the system has eight limit cycles. In this paper, we try to derive by computers the necessary and sufficient conditions for this system to have eight limit cycles. In order to find the symbolic real solutions to semi-algebraic systems where polynomials are Lyapunov quantities, we transform the equations into triangular systems by pseudo-division, locate the real solutions of the last equation and verify the inequalities by the Budan-Fourier theorem. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the system to have eight limit cycles are given under a reasonable limitation.
On the number of limit cycles in piecewise planar quadratic differential systems

Abstract:We consider piecewise quadratic perturbations of centers of piecewise quadratic systems in two zones determined by a straight line through the origin. By means of expansions of the displacement map, we are able to find isolated zeros of it, without dealing with the unsurprising difficult integrals inherent in the usual averaging approach. We apply our technique to non-smooth perturbations of the four families of isochronous centers of the Loud family, $S_1$, $S_2$, $S_3$, and $S_4$, as well as to non-smooth perturbations of non-smooth centers given by putting different $S_i$'s in each zone. To show the coverage of our approach, we apply its first order, which recovers the averaging method of the first order, in perturbations of the already mentioned centers considering all the straight lines through the origin. Then we apply its second order to perturbations of the above centers for a specific oblique straight line. Here in order to argue we introduce certain blow-ups in the perturbative parameters. As a consequence of our study, we obtain examples of piecewise quadratic systems with at least $12$ limit cycles. By analyzing two previous works of the literature claiming much more limit cycles we found some mistakes in the calculations. Therefore, the best lower bound for the number of limit cycles of a piecewise quadratic system is up to now the $12$ limit cycles found in the present paper.
