Abstract:Underwater environment observation with underwater acoustic tomography has been considerably developed in recent years. Moving sound transmission can obtain the observation of entire spatial area with sound station moving. Various internal structures, unique surface and submarine boundaries and changing environment constitutes a complex acoustic propagation channel. This paper focus on the inversion method and signal resampling for sound moving transmission. Also, the current field in three-dimensional (3D) scale is also studied. A five-station sound transmission experiment with four moored station and one moving station that conducted in range of 500m×500m at Huangcai reservoir, Changsha, China is presented. Signal resampling is performed to get correlation of received acoustic data. The vertical layer-averaged flow current results between moving station and moored station are inversed with 2D grid method. 3D flow current field result is composed by grid-averaged inversion current of vertical profile via moving station at different moment. The received results of reciprocal signal transmission between two moored stations and one moving station were used for layer-averaged current variations at vertical scale and grid-averaged current. The feasibility of the method in underwater moving acoustic tomography research is proved and its applicability is discussed. The proposed underwater acoustic tomography technology develops an innovative idea for the further development of temporal- spatial grided tomography observation.

Abstract:Aiming at the test of void content of carbon-fiber reinforced composite used in aeronautic industry, developed a portable ultrasonic non-destructive test system. The test theory model and hardware structure are introduced. The system can output test result by C-Scan image and column chart, finally provide test report. The precision of void content results come to 99.3%. The system can test the void content of carbon-fiber reinforced composite quickly and expediently on the spot.

Abstract:The research on deep-sea hydrothermal fluids, cold springs, and other bottom water bodies has important implications for ecosystems. But the deep-sea environment is very harsh, and many existing sampling devices cannot meet the requirements in terms of sampling purity and gas preservation capabilities. Many current samplers are basically arranged in a vertical manner, which means that a set of trigger devices need to be installed at the entrance and exit of the sampling channel, which consumes a lot of space. Taking the flowthrough deep-seawater sequence sampling mechanism as the research object, we show a horizontal flowthrough water sampler. Through numerical simulation and experimental research on the displacement mechanism of the target sample and prefilled pure water, the displacement efficiencies under different flow velocities and sampling cavity shapes were obtained. The results confirmed that the positions of the inlet and outlet and the shapes of the sampling cavity have little influence on the displacement efficiencies at high flow rates. However, installing the inlet below the sampling cavity and installing the outlet above the sampling cavity can significantly reduce the blind area of displacement. Setting a small inclination angle to the capsule sampling cavity helps to improve the displacement effect at low flow rates. This design and research results not only simplified the complicated trigger mechanism of the traditional vertical water samplers, but also provided a reference for the operation modes of the samplers under different sample conditions.

Abstract:This paper introduces the system design and implementation of a digital instrument based platform for the research and development of ultrasonic flow-meter. An application program was developed to control the Agilent 33220A waveform generator, Agilent DSO6012A oscilloscope and detection circuit board. The waveform generator functions to excite piezoelectric sensors to transmit ultrasonic wave, which is reflected and then acquired and stored by the oscilloscope. A MATLAB script is invoked to process the data transferred from the oscilloscope and calculate the transit time and flow rate subsequently. This platform helps to study and develop new type ultrasonic flow-meter efficiently.

Abstract:The flowrate measurement devices or instruments in small channel are very limited.Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique and cross-correlation velocity measurement principle,a new method for flowrate measurement in millimeter-scale pipe is proposed and a new measurement device is developed.Two pairs of electronic switches are used to obtain two independent conductivity signals of the fluid.By cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity and flowrate of the fluid can be determined.As a preliminary research,flowrate measurement experiments are carried out in two pipes with the inner diameters of 3.2 mm and 5.4 mm,respectively.The experimental results show that the new proposed method based on C~4D technique for flowrate measurement is feasible and effective.

Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeters play an important role in industrial production, aerospace and other fields. In this paper, a high-precision ultrasonic flowmeter based on the cross-correlation method is designed, and the commercial finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 is used to simulate the propagation process of ultrasonic waves during flow measurement, and the implementation process of the cross-correlation algorithm is simulated by Python language. The flowmeter adopts the cross-correlation algorithm to improve the measurement accuracy of ultrasonic time of flight and adopts the method of combining FPGA and an embedded microprocessor to improve operation efficiency. In order to verify the performance of the flowmeter, we tested the flowmeter on the National Institute of Metrology and the self-built test platform, using the still water dragging method, the dynamic volume method and the field comparison method, respectively. The results show that the flowmeter has the ability to test the flow under the condition of high flow velocity (26 m/s) and a pipe diameter in the range of DN6~DN1600, that the absolute value of the relative indication error does not exceed 0.815% and that the repeatability does not exceed 0.150%. The designed ultrasonic flowmeter has high measurement accuracy, good repeatability, strong stability and a wide application range.

Abstract:Zero error caused by transducer system asymmetry which drifts with the environment change is a severe limitation to the performance improvement of an ultrasonic flow meter. This chapter proposes a novel ultrasonic transducer module with an own reference sound channel for zero error calibration. Different from traditional transducers, the module consists of two energy conversion terminals which are connected by a reference sound channel. Part of the ultrasound generated by one terminal transfers into the flow media and finally into another terminal, which is used for flow measurements. The rest propagates through their own sound channel as reference signal for zero drift acquisition. According to the difference of the measuring signal and the reference signal, the zero drift error can be calibrated. We have illustrated the construction, zero elimination method, and design theory of the module with simulation employed for validation. A prototype has been developed and the preliminary results demonstrate an observable decrease of the zero drift error.

Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeters (UFMs) based on the principle of transit time difference are widely used in process industries. The transit time difference is obtained through analyzing received acoustic signals generated by a couple of transducers located upstream and downstream respectively. The quality of received acoustic signal will directly affect the measurement accuracy of UFM. For this reason, a measurement-calculation coupled approach combining measurement tools and numerical simulation for calculating the acoustic signal of UFM is proposed in this paper. The method can predict the acoustic signals of UFM with different flowrates. First, important boundary condition (vibration velocity on transmitter transducer surface) is measured by measurement tool, which can reduce computational complexity and also avoid modeling transmitter transducers. Second, simulating the wave propagation (difficult to access experimentally) within moving medium by using the measured vibration velocity. Third, obtaining the transfer function of receiver by comparing estimated force acting on the receiver transducer surface with measured voltage signal from receiver, which can avoid modeling receiver transducer. Finally, predicting the received acoustic signal at different flowrates by using the transfer function. The rationality of predicted data was validated by comparing experimental and predicted acoustic signal on receiver transducer at different flowrates. A good agreement between simulated and experimental data was obtained, which means that the working processes of the acoustic signal generated by actual transducers inside UFMs can be accurately predicted based on this method. Analysis of the predicted results will provide good guides and advices to the design of UFMs involving actual application.

Abstract:<p>Aerospace explorations stimulate extensive research on innovative propellant flow measurement technologies in microgravity conditions. Ultrasonic-based measurements have advantages of non-invasive and non-moving-component constructions as well as fast responses to bi-directional flow detection, its applications in aerospace explorations have already been reported. To avoid the shortages of pulse ultrasonic measurement configurations, flow measurement of continuous ultrasonic wave propagation is presented to match the requirements of large measurement range and high precision. Fabrication process and laboratory validations using water flow are presented. Ground experiments show that the linearity of the proposed ultrasonic flow meter is obtained in the measurement range [0, 80ml/s] which is typical requirement in aerospace applications. Meanwhile, the fitted linear feature from the experimental data matches well the theoretical prediction except the flow prediction of stationary fluid. Under specific configurations, the absolute measurement error is significantly affected by the corresponding Reynolds number. Furthermore, the absolute measurement error is smaller when excitation signals with higher frequency are used if the phase tracking performance for different frequencies is identical.</p>

Abstract:Introduced a system for pipe-flow measurements based on continuous-wave(CW)ultrasonic Doppler method.To process the CW Doppler signal,intermediate-frequency(IF) demodulation,zoom FFT (Fast Fourier Transform)and weighted average algorithm for frequency evaluation were implemented in a single digital-signal-processing device.Thus we solved problems in conventional ultrasonic Doppler flowmeters such as hard to measure low velocity flow and decide the flow direction.

Abstract:The growth rate of vortex flowmeter is high. At present, vortex flowmeter is applied extensively to the measurement of pipe flow rate, and have become one of the flowmeters available for general use. However, vortex flowmeter is developing flowmeter. There are still some limits in understanding of fundamental flow physics and experience of practical application. In order to solve these problems, many efforts have been done to the vortex flowmeter, and progresses have been achieved. The development of vortex flowmeter is discussed and reviewed in these aspects: vortex separating, vortex shedder shape, vortex shedding signal measurement and processing. The difficulty in research and future trends of vortex flowmeter are also discussed. A new mass flow rate measurement method using vortex shedding principle is proposed.

Abstract:An ultrasonic gas flowmeter with high precision was designed for the situation of small tube caliber and fluctuating flow speed. Both weak signal detection and advanced high frequency CPLD circuit were used in this design. The flowmeter had the features of digital automatic gain control (AGC), adaptive error correction and high frequency counting. It worked in multiple MCU pipeline structure and provided several standard industrial output interfaces. The tests in industrial environment showed that its maximum measurerangewas +/- 30m/s and its precision was +/- 0.5%.

Abstract:A two-phase flow measuring device whose measurement system does not disturb the flow pattern, real-time measurement, and non-destructive measurement or non-intrusive model is a typical tool for an ideal situation. One measuring instrument that meets these criteria is an ultrasonic flow meter. Ultrasonic sensors can measure the velocity of fluid flow in pipelines. It has the advantage of high accuracy and reproducibility and does not make direct physical contact with the fluid in the pipe. Low fabrication costs and fast response make ultrasonic flowmeters widely used for two-phase flow measurements in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The void fraction or liquid holdup and velocity are the two most essential parameters for flow monitoring. The Time of Flight (ToF) method is mainly used for measurements in several ultrasonic flowmeter methods. In the present manuscript, the introductory section of this review explains the advantages of using the Time of Flight (ToF) method and its basic principles. This review also discusses research on measuring velocity and flow rate, differences in intrusive and non-intrusive measurement methods, parameters that affect ultrasonic measurements, and finally, measuring film thickness using non-intrusive methods.

Abstract:The principle of the ultrasonic flowmeter is introduced.This paper also designs a simple and highly effi-cient four-channel ultrasonic drive circuit and echo reception circuit,Focusing on a four-channel circuit design.Sig-nal receiving circuit uses integrated chips to enlarge and filtering.This system is mainly used in ultrasonic gas flow meter.The results show that the design is efficent.

Abstract:A new contactless velocity measurement sensor for bubble/slug flow in small scale pipes is developed with the contactless impedance detection (CID) technique. The new sensor consists of two same-designed CID modules (an upstream and a downstream) and an information processing module. In the upstream/downstream CID module, the capacitive reactance elimination principle is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of coupling capacitances, and the analog phase sensitive demodulation (APSD) technique is adopted to obtain the fluid impedance signals (real part and imaginary part) of the gas-liquid two-phase flow. In the information processing module, the cross-correlation method is introduced to determine two initial bubble/slug velocities with real part and imaginary part of the fluid impedance, respectively. Then for each flow pattern, a velocity fusion model is established to fuse the two initial velocities. Based on the flow pattern identification result by a flow pattern classifier, the corresponding velocity fusion model is applied to determine the fused bubble/slug velocity. Three prototypes of the new sensor are developed and experiments are carried out. Experimental results show that the new sensor has good velocity measurement performance for bubble/slug flow in small scale pipes. For all the three prototypes, the maximum relative errors of velocity measurement are less than 3.0%. Results also indicate that the capacitive reactance elimination can successfully overcome the adverse influence of the coupling capacitances and taking full advantage of the total fluid impedance signals is an effective way to improve the velocity measurement accuracy.
