Abstract:To combat errors effect occurring in arithmetic code streams, a forbidden symbol is added to the symbol set to accomplish error detection ability in the arithmetic codes. Specially, through splitting the subinterval occupied by the forbidden symbol into two parts, and placing each at one end of the encoding interval, the error detecting capability is improved without compression efficiency loss. Simulated tests show this algorithm may detect errors more quickly than previously proposed methods.
A Novel Arithmetic Coder for Bayer Pattern Images Compression

Abstract:Aiming at the coding of prediction errors based on the Bayer pattern images,an effective and adaptive arithmetic coder is designed.Generally,a probability distribution of the prediction errors forms Laplacian distribution with zero mean.To reduce computing complexity of estimation of the error probability,the error is classified into quantization regions by minimizing mean square error,and a table is designed which lists the error quantization regions and corresponding probability with 3 significance bits.Experiment result shows that the proposed arithmetic coder is more effective than Golomb coder.

Abstract:In the series of AVS coding standard, logarithmic domain based adaptive binary arithmetic coder (LBAC) is used with a high data-compression ratio and a hardware-efficient structure. However, the existing software implementation of LBAC is of high complexity, especially for the decoder. Based on the analysis of the mapping mechanism between the logarithmic domain and the original domain, this paper proposes an original domain based acceleration algorithm for LBAC (ODB-LBAC). This algorithm simplifies the existing decoding process of LBAC and is friendly for software implementation. Experimental results show that, ODB-LBAC achieves a speedup of 5.65% and 18.28% in a fully optimized AVS2 decoder, for random-access and all-intra configurations, respectively. At present, this algorithm has been adopted into the AVS3 reference software as the reference implementation of LBAC.

Abstract:arithmetic coding (AC) is notable for its high compression gain and high implementation cost. The coding process includes range update, renormalization, and probability estimation update. Old AC engine realized both range update and probability estimation update by multiplications or table look-up. In this paper, we replace multiples with additions by combining original domain and logarithmic domain. We kept the cost of alternation between two domains low by employing approximation and optional modification. Moreover, renormalization takes place only when least probable symbol happens so that much time can be saved for renormalization process. Overall coding speed and implementation cost is improved compared to old AC engine.

Abstract:A fast binary arithmetic codec with error detection capability based on the M Coder is proposed.The computation complexity is reduced through proper selection of the position occupied by the forbidden symbols in the encoding interval while exempting from multiplications.Theoretic analysis as well as experiments show that this coding and decoding algorithm may work well with a faster speed compared with previously proposed schemes,being applicable in practice.

Abstract:Arithmetic coding is widely adopted in the state-of-art multimedia compression schemes due to its high coding efficiency.Unfortunately,arithmetic codes are extremely vulnerable to channel errors because of the error propagation property.In this paper,arithmetic decoder is modeled as a finite state machine(FSM),and a sequential decoding algorithm is contrived by utilizing maximum a-posteriori(MAP) estimation rule.The FSM is responsible for a-priori probability estimation and error detection.Simulations with memoryless sources and JPEG2000 images show that the algorithm improves the system performance with reduced sequence error rate and enhanced quality of reconstructed images.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved binary-to-binary logarithm and anti-logarithm line approximation including its VLSI implementation.This arithmetic can increase precision well,compared with the newest references,the logarithm converter's percent error reduces 46.1% and the anti-logarithm converter's percent error reduces 32.2%.A leading-one detector circuit is designed to obtain the leading-one position of an input binary word and error-correcting circuit is designed to reduce error.The implementation is simply,uses combinational logic only and calculates the approximation in a single clock cycle.

Abstract:Error correction performance analysis is essential for optimizing parameters in designs of joint source channel coding schemes.However,in most joint source channel coding schemes,the relationship between the error correction performance and the encoding rate can only be assessed through empirical tests.This paper presents a theoretical analysis of an error resilient arithmetic stack decoding algorithm as an example.The upper bound on the sequence error probability is shown to be inversely proportional to(1-R),where R is the error resilient code coding rate.Simulations verify the accuracy of this upper bound.The analysis method also provides a theoretical basis for parameter optimization of joint source channel coding scheme designs.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved arithmetic coding algorithm，whichis come from the original Q-coder scheme.We find add-and-shift will increase the encoding efficiency dramatically with an acceptable hardware complexity.On the other hand，Witten′s mechanism is used to overcome the carry-over problem.An analytical result of our scheme is given in contrast to the original one.And the synthesis result is also given to show the performance obtained over the hardware complexity.Finally，a prototype of decoder is completed to verify the correctness of our improved scheme.

Abstract:This paper proposes an efficient probability estimation design based on the Logarithmic Binary Arithmetic Coding (LBAC) in the second generation of Audio Video coding Standard (AVS2). The probability estimation process in LBAC is not stable enough in case of violent fluctuation and lack of flexibility in updating speed. The proposed design introduces two regulatory factors to mitigate the violent fluctuation and adjust the probability fluctuation all along the line. It can achieve a higher-precision and more stable probability estimation process with a hardware-friendly architecture. Experiments are carried out on JVET and AVS2 reference softwares, JEM-7.1 and RD-19.2. The results demonstrate that the proposed design can obtain a higher compression performance, up to 0.36% and 0.68% respectively.

Abstract:The problem of correcting deletions and insertions has recently received significantly increased attention due to the DNA-based data storage technology, which suffers from deletions and insertions with extremely high probability. In this work, we study the problem of constructing non-binary burst-deletion/insertion correcting codes. Particularly, for the quaternary alphabet, our designed codes are suited for correcting a burst of deletions/insertions in DNA storage. Non-binary codes correcting a single deletion or insertion were introduced by Tenengolts [1984], and the results were extended to correct a fixed-length burst of deletions or insertions by Schoeny et al. [2017]. Recently, Wang et al. [2021] proposed constructions of non-binary codes of length n, correcting a burst of length at most two for q-ary alphabets with redundancy log n+O(log q log log n) bits, for arbitrary even q. The common idea in those constructions is to convert non-binary sequences into binary sequences, and the error decoding algorithms for the q-ary sequences are mainly based on the success of recovering the corresponding binary sequences, respectively. In this work, we look at a natural solution in which the error detection and correction algorithms are performed directly over q-ary sequences, and for certain cases, our codes provide a more efficient encoder with lower redundancy than the best-known encoder in the literature.

Abstract:Arithmetic codes are powerful entropy coding tools, but they are very vulnerable to transmission errors. Analysis of the error propagation characteristics of a definite precision arithmetic coder was used to develop an arithmetic code error detection algorithm with multiple forbidden symbols. Three different assignment schemes for the forbidden symbol probability intervals were studied to identify the best method. The best method achieves greater error detection capability with the same redundancy in terms of bit and symbol error detection distance. The number of errors detected immediately after the error occurring is about twice that of the single forbidden symbol method. The algorithm is an automatic repeat request (ARQ) based error detection method that reduces possible branches in arithmetic code probability decoding algorithms.

Abstract:Summary form only given. The carry-over problem is inherent in arithmetic coding as a result of using finite precision arithmetic. As far as we know, the currently widely used solution for this problem is the bit-stuffing technique, which was proposed by Rissanen and Langdon (198l). However, this technique is not completely satisfactory. The stuffed-bit affects the coding efficiency slightly. The code stream inserted with several stuffed-bits loses its concept as a real number. This conflicts with the principle that arithmetic coding maps an input stream to an interval on the real line, which is neither perfect nor convenient for analysis. We present our solution for the carry-over problem, the carry-trap technique, which works without the deliberately inserted stuffed-bit. We also present a concise termination method, named the medium termination technique. Both are proved rigorously
