Abstract:In video communications the compressed video stream is very likely to be corrupted by channel errors. In order to combat these channel errors, many methods have been proposed. In this paper, a new method for motion vectors (MVs) interpolation with the help of MV extrapolation (MVE), is presented to conceal the corrupted frame of H.264/AVC. In our proposed method, the MVs of lost blocks can be obtained after interpolation with the extrapolated MVs. Experimental results show that this method is able to provide better performance than existing algorithms in terms of PSNR.

Abstract:In this paper, an effective error concealment algorithm for H.264-coded video is proposed. Firstly, motion vector relative strength of neighboring macroblocks (MVRS) is obtained by calculating a ratio involving the motion vectors of adjacent macroblocks. Then, according to the magnitude of MVRS, the way of generating the motion vector of the lost macroblock is determined. Finally,each lost macroblock is concealed on the basis of the selected algorithm. Satisfying simulation results are achieved, which illustrate the proposed method yields better performance than the methods in literatures for most video sequences.

Abstract:As the newest video coding standard, H.264/AVC [1] adopts the high-efficiently predictive coding and variable length entropy coding to achieve high compression efficiency. On the other side, transmission errors become the major problem faced by video broadcasting service providers. Error concealment (EC) [2] here is adopted to handle slices with huge conjunctive corrupted areas inside. Considering Error propagation from corrupted slice to succeeding ones is the key factor affecting the video quality, this paper proposes a novel temporal EC scheme including the bi-direction Motion Vector (MV) retrieval method and an adaptive EC ordering basing on it. Background and motional steady shift part of slice will be given top and second priority, respectively. Combined with our proposed Improved Boundary Matching Algorithm (IBMA) which provides more accurate distortion function, experiments results show that our proposal achieves better performance under different error rate channel, compared with EC algorithm adopted in H.264 reference software [3].

Abstract:Transmission of compressed video over error prone channels may result in packet losses or errors, which can significantly degrade the image quality. Aimed this problem, non-normative error concealment (EC) is recommended in H.264/AVC to recover the lost image. By analyzing of non-normative inter EC, this paper focused on improvement of it. Firstly, since the "guessed'Vrecovered MV (motion vector) in existing EC is not so close to the real MV, a refined MV recovery is proposed to get a more accurate "guessed" MV. Secondly an improved MV selection criterion (side matching criterion) is proposed, which is trying to "guess'Vapproach a lost MB (macroblock)'s real/original side match distortion, instead of "guess'Vapproach value 0 in traditional inter EC. In addition, for MV refinement scheme, inspired by MV searching in motion estimation, we adopt a diamond searching for MV recovery. Both objective and subjective image quality evaluation in experiments show that our proposal achieves a better image recovery compared with non-normative inter EC.

Abstract:With the ubiquitous application of Internet and wireless networks, H.264 video communication becomes more and more popular. However, due to the high-efficiently predictive coding and the variable length entropy coding, it is more sensitive to transmission errors. Error concealment (EC) is just an approach to utilize the spatial and temporal correlations to conceal the corrupted region. In this paper, first we propose variable block size error concealment (VBSEC) scheme inspired by variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) in H.264. This scheme provides four EC modes and four sub-block partitions. The whole corrupted macro-block (MB) will be divided into variable block size adoptively according to the actual motion. More precise motion vectors (MV) will be predicted for each sub-block Then MV refinement (MVR) scheme is proposed to refine the MV of the heterogeneous sub-block by utilizing three step search (TSS) algorithm adaptively. Both VBSEC and MVR are based on our improved spatio-temporal boundary matching algorithm (STBMA). By utilizing these schemes, we can reconstruct the corrupted MB in the inter frame more accurately. The experimental results show that our proposed scheme can obtain maximum PSNR gain up to 1.82dB and 1.52dB, respectively compared with the boundary matching algorithm (BMA) adopted in the JM11.0 reference software and STBMA.
Multiple-Reference Temporal Error Concealment Based on H.264/AVC

Abstract:According to the new characteristics of the H.264/AVC, two multiple-reference temporal error concealment techniques are proposed. One method uses the average of the motion vectors of the adjacent blocks as an estimate of the lost motion vector, and the other method is based on multi-hypothesis EC algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed methods are better than the test model JM5.0 of H.264/AVC.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the falling decoded video quality of H.264/SVC (Scalable Video Coding) in the error prone transmission network, this paper proposes real-time feedback-based interactive error control methods suitable for low bit rate transmission. These methods make full use of the inter-layer prediction of spatial layers, improves the conventional feedback-based intra macro block (MB) update and references picture selection (RPS) error resilience techniques. The methods were tested using SVC common test conditions. Simulation results show that the average Y-PSNR of decoded pictures can achieve around 1.78dB gains using the best proposed method compared with the relative methods.

Abstract:For low bitrate video communications, each video frame usually fills the payload of a single network packet. In this situation, the loss of a packet may result in loosing the entire video frame. Currently, most existing error concealment algorithms can only deal with the loss of macroblocks and are not able to conceal the whole missing frame. In this paper, we have proposed a new hybrid motion vector extrapolation (HMVE) algorithm to recover the whole missing frame. The proposed algorithm is capable of estimating the missing motion vectors with much greater accuracy than other existing methods. Experimental results show that it is highly effective and significantly outperforms other existing frame recovery methods.
A Novel Error Concealment Algorithm for H.264/AVC

Abstract:To benefit network transmission, the bit stream of the whole frame coded by H.264/AVC is usually grouped into one packet. However, the packet loss during transmission will lead to the distortion of the reconstructed video and the error propagation. To deal with this problem, error concealment (EC) strategy is widely used to recover the lost frames and to weaken the effect of error propagation. In this paper, we propose a new EC method which uses both the forward and backward motion information to recover the motion information of the current lost frame. Besides, for the pixels whose motion information is quite different compared with its neighboring pixels, we propose to use the spatial correlation to fill up the pixels by minimizing the total variation (TV) norm. With the help of our proposed algorithm, we can obtain the motion vectors of the lost frames and improve the accuracy of motion vectors derived by the unidirection recovery method. Besides, the optimization strategy, minimizing the TV-norm for the pixels with quite different motion vectors, can help the decoder to recover the reconstructed frames more accurately. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve both better objective performance and subjective performance compared to well-known schemes.

Abstract:In packet-based video transmissions, packets loss due to channel errors may result in the loss of the whole video frame.Recently, many error concealment algorithms have been proposed in order to combat channel errors, however most of the existing algorithms can only deal with the loss of macroblocks and are not able to conceal the whole missing frame.In order to resolve this problem, in this paper we have proposed a new hybrid motion vector extrapolation (HMVE) algorithm to recover the whole missing frame, and it is able to provide more accurate estimation for the motion vectors of the missing frame than other conventional methods.Simulation results show that it is highly effective and significantly outperforms other existing frame recovery methods.

A Motion Attention Model Based Rate Control Algorithm for H.264/AVC

Abstract:Rate control plays a very important role in video streaming applications. The currently adopted rate control scheme in the latest video coding standard H.264/AVC still results in a relatively large quality fluctuation especially for frames with higher motion activities. In this paper, we consider the characteristics of human visual system and incorporate a motion attention model to direct the rate control process. From the motion vector (MV) field at 4times4 block level, motion saliency maps are calculated on multi-scale MV fields and integrated to a whole motion saliency map highlighting the attention regions. In the frame and MB layer of rate control, the number of bits allocated to each frame and each MB is adjusted based on its motion saliency. More bits are allocated those frames and MBs with higher motion saliency to improve their qualities, and thus reduce the quality variation. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm can increase the average PSNR by 0.068 dB, and decreases the PSNR variation by 15.65%, with a negligible increase of computation less than 3%.
Improved Error Concealment Algorithms Based on H.264/AVC Non-Normative Decoder

Abstract:We propose several improved error concealment (EC) algorithms based on the H.264/AVC non-normative decoder. The major differences are that motion compensated EC is introduced for intra frames, whereas spatial EC is introduced for inter frames. As for the EC of intra frames, scene change detection, motion activity detection and MV retrieval are hierarchically performed to decide whether spatial or temporal information is to be used. As for the EC of inter frames, scene change is also detected to avoid merging the scenes from different video shots. Therefore, the main idea of the proposed algorithms is that both spatial and temporal correlations are utilized for the EC of intra and inter frames. Both subjective and objective simulations under Internet conditions show that the proposed algorithm greatly outperforms that in the H.264/AVC non-normative decoder.

Abstract:The latest video coding standard H.264/AVC significantly outperforms previous standards in terms of coding efficiency. H.264/AVC adopts variable block sizes ranging from 4 times 4 to 16 times 16 in inter frame coding, and achieves significant gain in coding efficiency compared to coding a macroblock (MB) using regular block size. However, this new feature causes extremely high computation complexity when rate-distortion optimization (RDO) is performed using the scheme of full mode decision. This paper presents an efficient intermode decision algorithm based on motion homogeneity evaluated on a normalized motion vector (MV) field, which is generated using MVs from motion estimation on the block size of 4 times 4. Three directional motion homogeneity measures derived from the normalized MV field are exploited to determine a subset of candidate intermodes for each MB, and unnecessary RDO calculations on other intermodes can be skipped. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm can reduce the entire encoding time about 40% on average, without any noticeable loss of coding efficiency.
