Abstract:Fibrous adsorbents have the advantages of fast adsorption rate and ease of handling when compared with granular adsorbents and powdered adsorbents. The state of the art in activated carbon fiber (ACF) development in Japanese industry and emerging applications are reviewed. Fundamental works related to ACFs are briefly introduced. For designing ACF beds for adsorption in both gas phase and aqueous phase, axial dispersion in the bed becomes an important factor in determining breakthrough behavior of the bed. A method for determining the axial dispersion coefficient in fiber beds based on bed properties is introduced.

Abstract:Activated carbon fibers (ACF) are relatively novel and by far one of the most important fibrous carbon materials owing to their special characteristics such as fibrous structure, high porosity, high volumetric capacity, excellent packing density, fast adsorption kinetics, good porous storage capacity and ease of handling. This work aims to present a detailed overview of activated carbon fiber (ACF) synthesis process, influence of the process variables on the morphology of these ACF and their applications. A comprehensive study of major precursors (polyacrylonitrile, pitch, phenolic and cellulosic), particularly comparison between the characteristics of ACF based on these precursors, has been provided with an eye for details. Among them, lignocellulosic based ACF are suitable solutions for industrial scale ACF production implementing cost effective and environment friendly approach. The use of lignocellulosic material for ACF has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas effects and is a suitable alternative for solid waste management of lignocellulosic solid produced annually. Furthermore, reports on the applications of ACF in CO2 capture, volatile organic removal, wastewater treatment and energy have also been critically reviewed. ACF currently hold small market component of specific high-end uses. Due to their unique characteristics and advantages over other carbon materials, ACF can be anticipated to dominate a major market in the emerging areas of smart fabrics, energy storage, health care, water and air purification and advanced instrumentation.

Abstract:Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are modern materials that combine the best of carbon fibers and activated carbon with a number of significant advantages over the more traditional powder or granular forms. Advantages of activated carbon fiber compared to classical active carbon include its higher adsorption capacity, higher surface areas, more rapid adsorption rates, and ease of fabrication. Activated carbon fibers can be synthesized using different raw materials, such as phenolic resins, mesophase pitch, pitch fiber, polyacrylonitrile, or biomass. High surface area, controlled pore size, and pore size, distribution are necessary for the application of these materials into a specific end use. Thus, the specific surface area and porosity of carbon fibers can be significantly modified by an activation process that removes the most reactive carbon atoms from the structure, increasing the surface area and porosity. The porous texture of the activated carbons depends strongly on the activation process (physical or chemical), raw material, initial pore structure, surface roughness, and surface functionalities.

Abstract:The effects of activated carbon fiber(ACF)in water purification and wastewater treatment are introduced,and the current situation of the study on ACF in removing organic pollutants in water,purifying polluted groundwater,removing heavy metals,sterilization,as well as in the treatment of wastewater from pharmaceutical industry,phenol-bearing wastewater,wastewater from dyestuff industry,black liquor from paper making industry,organic wastewater and wastewater with high-valence ions are summarized.Four key aspects of the research in the use of ACF in water treatment are pointed out.

Abstract:Activated carbon (AC) is an important material in various fields owing to its low cost, well-developed porosity, and favorable chemical stability. Key factors for the optimal synthesis of AC are the carbon precursors, activation pathways, activating agents, and design of the procedure parameters. So far, no case studies have reviewed the activating agents used during the chemical activation process. Accordingly, the present review provides a summary of recent research, highlighting the development of activating agents during the process of AC. Detailed lists of pore-forming mechanisms by various activating agents, including alkaline, acidic, neutral, and self-activating agents, have been systematically summarized. Furthermore, the effects of activating agents on the experimental procedures have also been established. Finally, a comprehensive discussion about the influences of activating agents on the physical and chemical properties of the resultant AC is included. The objective of this study is to reveal and distinguish the individual roles of different activating agents during AC synthesis.

Abstract:Lignin‐based activated carbon (LAC) is a promising high‐quality functional material due to high surface area, abundant porous structure, and various functional groups. Modification is the most important step to functionalize LAC by altering its porous and chemical properties. Herein, this review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art modification technologies of LAC toward advanced applications. Promising modification approaches are reviewed to display their effects on the preparation of LAC. The multiscale changes in the porosity and the surface chemistry of LAC are fully discussed. Advanced applications are then introduced to show the potential of LAC for supercapacitor electrode, catalyst support, hydrogen storage and carbon dioxide capture. Finally, the mechanistic structure‐function relationships of LAC are elaborated. These results highlight that modification technologies play a special role in altering the properties and defining the functionalities of LAC, which could be a promising porous carbon material toward industrial applications.

Abstract:As an adsorbent,the polyacrylonitrile-based activated carbon fiber(PAN-ACF)was modified by air thermal oxidation,nitrate impregnation and hydrogen peroxide impregnation,respectively.The modification of PAN-ACF samples was characterized,including SEM surface morphology,BET specific surface,FTIR surface groups and total surface acidic groups.The adsorption effects on trace of hexavalent chromium and the adsorption capacity of modified PAN-ACF were studied.After modification macerated by hydrogen peroxide,the carbon crystallite size of ACF3 became smaller,causing the structure disordered,ascending the surface greatly,but the growth of surface oxygen pipeline groups was not obvious.The adsorption effect on hexavalent chromium of slightly polluted water was best,and the equilibrium temperature equation could be described with Langmuir isotherms equation,which is fit for Freundlich equation better.

Abstract:Activated carbon fibers (ACFs), as the third generation of activated carbon materials, are promising adsorbents due to their rich surface functional groups, high porosity and remarkable adsorption capacity. Exploring low-cost raw materials especially available industrial by-products and agricultural waste has always been the focus of ACFs research and application. Herein, pitch-based ACFs are prepared from low-cost coal tar pitch via spray melt spinning, stabilization, carbonization and KOH activation process. The activated temperature significantly affects the structure, surface function groups, specific surface area and pore structure. The as-prepared ACFs possess abundant oxygen functional groups, larger surface area and narrow pore size distribution in the range of 0.7–4.0 nm, correspondingly showing highlighted absorption capacities for iodine, methylene blue and cadmium ions (Cd2+). Cd2+ with the diameter of far less than 1 nm can enter the narrow pores and combine with oxygen-containing functional groups violently, which well follows the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9921) and exhibits secondary kinetic characteristics. These results distinctly demonstrate that pitch-based ACFs are promising candidates for polluted water treatment, especially to remove small organic molecules, dyes and heavy metal ions.

Research on Surface Properties of Modified Activated Carbon Fiber and Its Mercury Adsorption Performance

Abstract:Three different specific surface area viscose-ACF (defined as ACF-1、ACF-2 and ACF-3) were chosen in the tests. The resulting materials ACF-N and ACF-NH3 were obtained after the sample ACF-1 was treated with HNO3 acid digestion and ammonia solution. Then the characterization of surface properties and Hg adsorption tests were conducted for these five kinds of ACFs. The nitrogen adsorption test at temperature 77.4K showed that micro-pore distribution (d2nm) of five samples existed differences. Micro-pore volume of ACF-N and ACF-NH3 samples were smaller than that of ACF-1. Surface micro-structure was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that oxygen functional groups such as carbonyl and carboxyl in ACF-N and nitrogen-containing functional groups in ACF-NH3 are significantly more than that in ACF-1. Microcrystalline structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. It was found that graphitization and crystal level of ACF-2 and ACF-3 also increased comparing with ACF-1. Mercury removal tests revealed that mercury adsorption capacity does not simply depend on micro-pore volume because of the effect of surface micro-structure. Increasing the content of oxygen and nitrogen-containing functional groups,to some extent,can enhance mercury removal performance of ACF.

Abstract:Low-cost activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared from polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fibers abandoned by local factories via carbonization and CO2 activation. Oxygen-containing functional groups were introduced on the ACF surface via nitric acid and thermal treatment. ACFs with optimized pore structures and oxygen-containing functional groups display a remarkable capacitance of 214 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 mA cm(-2) and present an excellent cycling performance with a capacity retention of almost 100% over 3000 cycles. Moreover, the rate capability gains a significant improvement due to the existence of functional groups. The superb electrochemical performance of these materials provides a template of how to better engineer the ACFs' pore architecture and surface modifications to design enhanced electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.
Control of Nano Grains and Wide Carbocyclic Layer Space of Forming Active Carbon with Extraordinary Capacitance Characteristics in Supercapacitors

Abstract:Improving the properties of activated carbon (AC) electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of commercial supercapacitors is still a great challenge. In this work, a coconut shell carbonized raw material is used to successfully manufacture AC by the traditional steam activation method followed by further calcination in CO2. Results showed that a skeleton mesh wall was formed in AC, the thickness of the mesh wall was around 1.5 nm, and the crystalline phase of grain size of 1.13 nm was controlled to form independently in the wall of AC after calcination in CO2 for 4 h. The carbocyclic layer space of the grain phase ranges from 0.381 to 0.392 nm in AC, which is 17% wider than that of 0.335 nm of graphite. The AC shows a high specific surface area (1782 m(2)/g), and the supercapacitor prepared by AC shows a high specific capacitance (112.5 F.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1)), a high capacitance retention rate (retains 89.06% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a high rate performance (specific capacitance going down from 111.2 to 65.1 F.g(-1) under current density from 0.1 to 10 A.g(-1)), low internal resistance, and a power and energy capacity (energy density, 28.83 W h.kg(-1); power density, 9.89 kW.kg(-1)). It is worth comparing with the typical commercial YP-50 of Kuraray, Japan.
Versatile Activated Carbon Fibers Derived from the Cotton Fibers Used as CO2 Solid-State Adsorbents and Electrode Materials

Abstract:Activated carbon has an excellent porous structure and is considered a promising adsorbent and electrode material. In this study, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with abundant microporous structures, derived from natural cotton fibers, were successfully synthesized at a certain temperature in an Ar atmosphere and then activated with KOH. The obtained ACFs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis, nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N2 adsorption-desorption measurement. The obtained ACFs showed high porous qualities and had a surface area from 673 to 1597 m2/g and a pore volume from 0.33 to 0.79 cm3/g. The CO2 capture capacities of prepared ACFs were measured and the maximum capture capacity for CO2 up to 6.9 mmol/g or 4.6 mmol/g could be achieved at 0 °C or 25 °C and 1 standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm). Furthermore, the electrochemical capacitive properties of as-prepared ACFs in KOH aqueous electrolyte were also studied. It is important to note that the pore volume of the pores below 0.90 nm plays key roles to determine both the CO2 capture ability and the electrochemical capacitance. This study provides guidance for designing porous carbon materials with high CO2 capture capacity or excellent capacitance performance.
Progress of application of activated carbon in water treatemt:an overview

Abstract:Research and developments in the application of activated carbon(AC)in water treatment at home and abroad is reviewed.The uses of AC in different techniques for water treatment such as in electrolysis process are introduced,including as adsorbent,direct catalysts,catalysts support and as bio-support in bioprocesses.The application of modified AC in water treatment,and combination technologies of AC with membrane,TiO2,KMnO4,etc.,are focused.The results show that the efficiency of water treatment can be promoted greatly by adopting different treatment methods with AC as adsorbent.The future direction of AC is discussed briefly in terms of water treatment.

Abstract:In this study, the activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared using cotton woven waste as precursor. The cotton woven waste was first partly dissolved by 80% phosphoric acid and then was pre-soaked in 7.5% diammonium hydrogen phosphate solution. Finally, carbonization and activation were proceeded to get ACF. The optimum preparation conditions, including carbonization temperature, carbonization time, activation temperature and activation time, were chosen by orthogonal design. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption test was conducted to characterize the prepared ACF's pore structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) were employed to characterize its chemical properties and morphology. Adsorption of oilfield wastewater was used to evaluate its adsorption properties. The results show that the prepared ACF is in the form of fiber, with the sectional diameters of 11.7 x 2.6 mu m and the surface area of 789 m(2)/g. XPS results show that carbon concentration of the prepared ACF is higher than that of the commercial ACF. When the prepared ACF dosage is 6 g/L, over 80% of COD and over 70% of chrominance can be removed after 24 h of adsorption at 18 degrees C. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Activated carbon fiber (ACF) with a high specific surface area has a good application prospect in atmospheric humidity control because it can adsorb H2O gas through both physical and chemical mechanisms. Based on a commercial ACF, the preparation of activated carbon fiber with a high specific surface area was carried out via a vacuum activation method. And the effects of adsorption temperature, relative humidity, and multi-components of air on water vapor adsorption of ACFs were studied. The results showed that the pore structure of ACF was improved. The maximum value of the specific surface area for ACF was 2967 m2/g, when the activation temperature and time were 1000 °C and 5 h, respectively, which was 71.03% higher than that of the commercial ACF (1733 m2/g). The water vapor adsorption capacity of ACF activated at 1050 °C for 2 h was a maximum of 1.36 g/g at 25 °C, which was 112.50% higher than that of the commercial ACF (0.64 g/g). On the other hand, the ideal selectivity of ACF toward H2O/N2 and H2O/O2 reached more than 4000. Furthermore, the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption on ACF was about 40 kJ/mol, indicating that the adsorption belonged to physical adsorption. It naturally follows that activated carbon fiber by high-temperature vacuum activation will be one of the alternatives for air humidity control.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The structure and composition evolution of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers during the fabrication of activated carbon fibers (ACF) by a newly developed method were systematically elucidated. The pore structure of the fibers was significantly influenced by the carbonization and activation conditions. The elemental composition and chemical structure evolution of the fibers during the heat treatment processes were evaluated by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Crystal structure evolution of the fibers during the heat treatment processes was elucidated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Based on these understandings, the process conditions were optimized using an L-9(3)(4) orthogonal array design matrix. Appropriate process parameters for the fabrication of PVA-ACFs were established as carbonizing the dehydrated fiber at 300 degrees C for 60 min, and then lifting the temperature to 900 degrees C with a heating speed of 10 degrees C/min in an inert atmosphere, thereafter keeping the fiber at 900 degrees C for 60 min in an oxidizing atmosphere. Abstract:Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from furfural residues (FRs) by microwave-assisted pyrolysis and activation under CO2 atmosphere in this study. At microwave activation temperature of 800 °C and activation time of 20 min, KOH impregnated ACs (MKFRAC*) reached the maximum adsorption ability. While water-washed FRs (MWFRAC*) needed higher processing temperature and longer treatment time (850 °C/60 min) to attain its maximum adsorption capacity. Raman showed MKFRAC* had a high R-value, indicating the graphite structure's low crystallinity caused by the porous structure. The iodine adsorption value, Methylene Blue (MB) number, and yield of MKFRAC* were 1159.1 mg/g, 448.0 mg/g and 26.8% wt%, respectively. The mesopore volume of MKFRAC* was >48%, more than those of other ACs mainly due to the synergistic effect of chemical reagents, carbon structure and microwave irradiation. The investigation on the adsorption mechanism of MB on ACs revealed that MB adsorption capacities of MKFRAC were well described by the Langmuir model, showing a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 562.9 mg/g, while MB adsorption kinetics of MKFRAC followed a pseudo-second-order model. The results showed microwave preparation of FR-based ACs was a feasible technique with potential industrial applications.
