Abstract:A numerical method was presented for analysis of the traffic vibration of steel bridge with orthotropic steel deck. In this method, the bridge was represented by a shell model with detailed construction rather than the grillage model used before, a universal and simple finite element method was presented for a flexible vehicle, and the coupled dynamic equations of vehicle and bridge were solved by Newmark method. As an example, the traffic vibration of a simple-supported steel bridge with a span of 26 m was simulated. The results indicate that: 1) the impact factor of deflection from the shell model of bridge is similar with that from the grillage model, but the impact factor of stress is higher; 2) the high-order vibration modes reflected by the shell model affect the calculated high-frequency velocity response in the traffic vibration of bridge; 3) the impact factors in the traffic vibration of bridge from 3-D vehicle model are higher than that those from 2-D vehicle model; 4) for the simple-supported steel bridge in the traffic vibration, the dynamic deflection is mainly related with the low-order vibration modes, but the velocity is related with the low and higher-order vibration modes.

Abstract:As one of the most common failure types of arch bridges, stability is one of the critical aspects for the design of arch bridges. Using 3D finite element model in ABAQUS, this paper has studied the stability performance of an arch bridge with inclined arch ribs and hangers, and the analysis also took the effects of geometrical and material nonlinearity into account. The impact of local buckling and residual stress of steel plates on global stability and the applicability of fiber model in stability analysis for steel arch bridges were also investigated. The results demonstrate an excellent stability of the arch bridge because of the transverse constraint provided by transversely-inclined hangers. The distortion of cross section, local buckling and residual stress of ribs has an insignificant effect on the stability of the structure, and the accurate ultimate strength may be obtained from a fiber model analysis. This study also shows that the yielding of the arch ribs has a significant impact on the ultimate capacity of the structure, and the bearing capacity may also be approximately estimated by the initial yield strength of the arch rib.
An analytical method and its application for large-section PC box girder bridges

Abstract:In order to obtain accurate spatial stresses of box girder with a small number of elements, an analytical method for large-section PC box girders is proposed. A higher order displacement function in the axial direction is introduced, and the section composition is considered. Taking the Hangzhou Bay Bridge as an example, both 3-D solid FEM and the proposed method are compared. The results indicate that high accuracy can be achieved with a small number of elements by using the proposed method.

Abstract:The responses of a bridge were measured under traffic load with varying vehicle speed to investigate the dynamical characteristics of continuous bridge with steel box girders under vehicle load at expansion joint. The wavelet transform method was utilized in time-frequency analysis for responses of the bridge when vehicle passed the expansion joint and the deck of the bridge. A numerical model of vehicle-bridge coupled vibration system was carried out, and responses of bridge were calculated and compared with the experimental ones. Results show that the acceleration of the bridge when vehicle reaches the expansion joint is greater than that when vehicle passes the deck. The effect of vehicle speed on vibrations of the bridge due to the impact in position of expansion joint is more significant than that when vehicle travels on deck; the vibration amplitude decreases with the increasing of the distance between the cross-section and the expansion joint; local vibrations of deck with certain amplitudes are introduced by the impact of the vehicle in expansion joint, thus the model of member structure without consideration of local vibration of deck cannot simulate the vibration of the bridge when vehicle passes the expansion joint.

Abstract:To solve the matrices of stiff,mass and damping varying with time in vehicle-bridge vibration equations,the train and bridge were coupled together as one composite system.The vibration equations of vehicle-bridge time varying system were established by means of potential energy principle.The vibration responses of a continuous truss girder bridge were analyzed by using this method.The lateral vibration calculation results of a truss girder bridge are close to the testing values.This confirms the reliability of the method.

Abstract:Taking the calculation model of a concrete-filled steel tube(CFST)truss arch bridge with a main span 308 m as an example,this paper makes a study of the in-plane stability performance of such type of the structure and the influence of sectional design on the stability,using the calculation method that takes into account of dual nonlinearity influences.The results of the study indicate that the strength of the Category I Stability and the Category II Stability that only considers the geometric nonlinearity influence is far greater than that of the calculations that consider the dual nonlinearity influences.The changing of steel and concrete grades does not contribute much to the enhancement of the in-plane ultimate strength of the truss arch bridge,however,the steel ratio in the section is an important parameter that will have influence on the ultimate bearing capacity.

Abstract:The 50 m box girders in the tidal flat section of unnavigable channel bridge in Hangzhou Bay Bridge adopt the approach of trolley on the under bridge to transport and erect the girder. Based on the actual working and load conditions, a precise 3D solid FEM simulation model is established by taking account of the space effects of prestressing force, applying equivalent node force and taking reasonable consideration of support details, etc. The values for concrete characteristics are determined according to current specifications for the design of highway bridge. The load is calculated with the consideration of the worst factors. The bottom of the support is simulated as rigid element. Modulus of elasticity for girder contact layer will not appear tensile stress when rotations and deformations occur at girder end. Element mesh should be as subdivided as possible when the structure is discretized. Owing to the relative complexity of the stress at girder end, thicker than span intermediate element mesh is adopted for girder end. The integral deformation and the space stress distribution of weight-bearing box girder are calculated. Results indicate that the deformation is relatively small and the maximum deflection is within the reversed arch because the load is quite close to the support. The maximum main tensile stress of the support section occurs at the side of bottom plank surface, which exceeds concrete cracking strength. Consequently, concrete in this area should be treated and stiffened so as to avoid it from cracking. When the maximum main compressive stress occurs near the stabilizer of girder-erecting machine, its value is less than the compressive strength of concrete.
Nonlinear static analysis of space truss using vector mechanics of structure

Abstract:In order to analyze the nonlinear static performance of space trusses,this paper introduces ramp load and large virtual damping into the vector mechanics of structure(VMS)to make the structure stay static balance during the loading phase.By simplifying the vibration of every space point,the approximate vibrating period of the space point is obtained.Using five time points to depict the minimum period,the critical time increment for static analysis of space trusses is obtained.This paper conducts the static analysis of a star-shaped space truss,considering the geometry and material nonlinearity.The results obtained by VMS and that by software ANSYS are compared.It indicates that analysis using the vector mechanics of structure is of high accuracy,and the calculation program is very concise.The calculating method of the critical time increment is verified,and the critical time increment agrees well with the actual value of the calculation program.

Abstract:The nonlinear static behavior analysis of the structure is an important issue for structural analysis. Vector mechanics of structure (VMS) is a newly developed method for structural behavior analysis, especially for the computation of large deformation and large displacement, which involves the geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and boundary nonlinearity. The structural behavior analysis using VMS is a kind of simulation for the reality. For static analysis, the loading rate should be very slow. In another way, we may add damping into the dynamic analysis for obtaining the static solutions. Furthermore, due to that explicit integration is deployed in VMS, the time increment for integration is critical for the computation convergence. Therefore, it is worthy to address the methods for a quick and efficient solution of static problems using VMS. This paper derives the analysis formulas for 3D rod element in VMS. The geometrical nonlinearity and the material nonlinearity are analyzed. The nonlinear behavior of a space truss is simulated, and the static solution is compared with the result by the finite element software ANSYS. The problems concerned in the numerical algorithm are discussed and a reference formula of the critical time increment for the space truss analysis is proposed. It proves that the method of VMS can achieve high accuracy for nonlinear static analysis, with the superiority of simple and systematical computation programming. The critical time increment obtained by the reference formula agrees well with the actual value. The computation efficiency for static solution could be enhanced by increasing the material density and damping factor.
Approach for Analyzing the Ultimate Strength of Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Arch Bridges with Stiffening Girder

Abstract:A convenient approach is proposed for analyzing the ultimate load carrying capacity of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) arch bridge with stiffening girders. A fiber model beam element is specially used to simulate the stiffening girder and CFST arch rib. The geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity, influence of the construction process and the contribution of prestressing reinforcement are all taken into consideration. The accuracy of this method is validated by comparing its results with experimental results. Finally, the ultimate strength of an abnormal CFST arch bridge with stiffening girders is investigated and the effect of construction method is discussed. It is concluded that the construction process has little effect on the ultimate strength of the bridge.

Abstract:The steel racks on the floor are seen as live loads in the current design process, ignoring the interaction with the supporting frames. In this paper, multiple steel racks with different masses and stiffnesses are placed on the first floor of a two-story main structure to form different real structures (RS). The corresponding simplified structures (SS) are frames with the mass of steel racks concentrated on the first floor of the main structure. Modal analysis is performed to analyze the relationship between the periods of RS and SS in the cross-aisle direction. Firstly, the beams on the first floor are assumed to be infinitely rigid. The relationship between the periods of the rack T-Rk, the simplified structure T-SS, and the real structure T-RS under different mass ratios & alpha; is established, and an accurate equation relating T-RS with T-Rk and T-SS is proposed. Moreover, by considering the influence of finite beam stiffness, the interaction between racks and the main structure is studied by constructing different analysis models. The effect of the main structure on the racks is reflected by a combined system consisting of beams and racks. A modified model, distinguished from SS by considering the effect of no-mass racks, is constructed to study the strengthening effect of the racks on the first-floor beams. The effect of the top connecting bars is also analyzed.

Abstract:We carried out a field measurement on the pedestrian-induced vibration of a steel truss footbridge connecting two buildings with a curved planar shape and a net span up to 45 m. Based on the Hilbert-Huang transformation, we effectively identified the dynamic properties of the footbridge, i. e. , natural frequencies and damping ratios. We established the finite element mode of the footbridge. The finite element analysis results agree well with those of the field measurements. We also accessed the vibration serviceability of the footbridge using the domestic and international standards currently available.

Abstract:The dynamic performance of a new type of concrete-filled steel tube high-pier curved continuous truss girder bridges under moving vehicles is studied combining field testing and numerical simulation method by an actual bridge example. The dynamic response data were obtained before opening to traffic for the bridge under moving testing vehicles. A three-dimensional vehicle and bridge coupled vibration analysis model for curved bridges is proposed and validated. The dynamic behavior characteristics and vehicular ride comfort for this new type bridge are studied considering variable road surface and other conditions. The results indicate that the dynamic impacts of this bridge from vehicles are underestimated compared with those defined in the design code. In addition, the dynamic impact factors vary significantly for the local components and some of them could exceed the design value. Finally, the riding comfort of this bridge is evaluated, which suggests a fairly uncomfortable condition.

Abstract:A comprehensive indirect method is proposed in this study to estimate the dynamic characteristics of the fundamental mode and evaluate the element stiffness of a girder bridge using a passing tractor with two identical trailers. The novelty of this study is the use of the dynamic interaction between the two identical trailers and the bridge rather than that between the truck and the bridge. One of the advantages of this is that the dynamic characteristics of trailers are easier to model and analyse. Under the proposed method, the residual acceleration of the two trailers is first used to eliminate the adverse effects of road surface roughness. The fundamental natural frequency of the bridge is obtained from the Fourier transform of the resulting signal. Next, the component corresponding to this fundamental frequency was extracted using bandpass filtering. The corresponding damping ratio and mode shape can be reconstructed through a short-time Fourier transform (STFT) under the assumption that the fundamental mode shape amplitude peak is located at the midspan. Finally, the element stiffness of the bridge was evaluated using the reconstructed fundamental mode shape. In this study, the proposed method is investigated via numerical examples and performs well in different scenarios, for example, in the presence of high-level measurement noise and low-level road surface roughness. Furthermore, the method was validated through field testing on the Li-Zi-Wan bridge in Chongqing. The extracted fundamental mode shape agrees well with that obtained using the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method. The evaluated element stiffness matches very well with both the original design and the static deflection test results.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to find out the degradation of dynamic behaviour of bridge girders with trapezoidal profiled webs when subjected to different vehicle moving loads. Finite element modelling based parametric analysis is demonstrated to be desirable in capturing the dynamic deflection and stress state of critical structural details of girders. The model is validated in the modal analysis through a comparison with theoretical eigenfrequencies. The vibration characteristics are shown to be significantly affected by the corrugation details. The structural service life results of analysed bridge girders are in close agreement with experimental data. It is shown that the dynamic nodal velocity and deflection of analysed bridge girders are greatly affected by the magnitude of the load corresponding to the overload of the vehicle in contrast to the vehicle travel speed. Similar observations can be made for the fatigue life prediction analysis related to the crack initiation when unfavourable effects of the overload vehicle are concerned. Presented analytical results using a fracture mechanics approach could be taken as a good basis for the service life assessment of related bridges with the desired level of performance or functionality.

Abstract:Combine the specific bridge, an analytical on the bridges static performance studied through the finite element model analysis and field test method. Summary and analyze the displacement and stress variation law of the main truss, longitudinal beams and beams which the bolt and weld superstructure steel truss bridges are effected by static loads, and compared field test results with theory value. Application practice proves that the evaluation standard and inspection of steel truss bridge is appropriate.

Abstract:This paper proposes a three-parameter viscoelastic model for studying the time-dependent behavior of steel-concrete composite girder bridges. The method of three-dimensional virtual laminated element(3D-VLE) was developed to analyze the effects and consider the different material properties on the cross-section. After the evaluation of the parameters, which was based on the experimental measurements, the prediction curves accounting for time-dependent behavior of the deformations and strains of the steel-concrete composite girder bridges were obtained. The correlation studies between the analytical and experimental results were conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model.

Abstract:This article presented a systematic, universal, and flexible bridge numerical modeling method, and the seismic performance of a concrete filled steel tubes arch bridge was studied. Numerical method is widely used in bridge seismic performance analysis, but the diversity and complexity structures increase trouble in the modeling process. This article presents a systematic, universal, and flexible bridge numerical modeling method, and the seismic performance of a concrete filled steel tubes arch bridge is studied. The geometric/attribute model involves structural/stiffness equivalence, and the bridge parametric modeling strategy combined commercial computer‐aided design language of software MATLAB and ANSYS. Data exchange in different fields and rapid reconstruction of numerical model are realizing. Finally, the vibration mode, deformation and internal force of the bridge under seismic load are studied. The results indicating that the proposed parametric model formed a complete data transfer process, and the bridge model can be rapidly modifying and reconstructing. The numerical calculation efficiency is greatly improved because of the structure element is employed instead of solid element. The displacement and internal force of arch rib are mainly controlling by lateral load under horizontal uni‐input, and the combined horizontal and vertical load should be considering in seismic design. The leaning angle and width‐span ratio of transverse braces are considered to improve the seismic performance of bridges.

Abstract:In order to carry out the stability analysis of the in-situ reconstructed steel truss bridge with continuous girder bridge, this study understood the basic overview of the project and the construction scheme, which carried out the construction analysis by numerical simulation method. It is easy to find that the maximum stress of bracket is 75N/mm 2 which is less than 110N/mm 2.The maximum deformation is 9.2mm, and column height/500=40mm.Stability is calculated as 10.2, which is in accordance with the code. Setting the reinforcement ring at the node part, the local stress is reduced from 285 N/mm 2 to 145 N/mm 2, which avoids the Z-direction tearing of the steel plate. During the construction stage, the tensile stresses at the top edge of block and bottom edge were 1.4 MPa and 1.5 MPa respectively, and the normal stress meets the construction requirements. The flexural bearing capacity can be satisfied without the temperature T-degree effect in consideration. The study can provide reference for the stability analysis of related cases.s
