Abstract:The friction and wear behavior of carbon-graphite materials whichhave the closest relationship with carbon-carbon composites has been summarized, while the current state of the tribological investigation on carbon-carbon composites reviewed according to lower and higher energy levels respectively. Some topics for future research are suggested as well. It has been suggested that further work done in order to realize anticipated controlling of the friction and wear behavior of the C-C composites and deepened recognition of their wear mechanisms.
Friction and Wear Properties of Pitch/resin Densified Carbon Carbon Composites Used for Airbrakes

Abstract:By use of X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the friction and wear results obtained from MM-1000 dynamometer tests of CVI pitch/resin C/C composites were analyzed. By investigating the factors that affected the friction and wear properties, such as matrix carbon, application environment, graphitization degree and brake pressure, etc, friction and wear mechanism of carbon materials were probed. The results indicate that pitch densified CVI initially treated composite is more graphitizable with its graphitization degree up to 62%, and which results in uniform small debris easier to generate, more smooth friction curves with the coefficient of 0.3～0.4 and relatively higher linear wear and mass loss, compared with CVI/resin C/C composites. It was further proved by SEM observation that tribological behavior of C/C composite was system dependent. Factors determining the friction and wear properties such as the size of debris and its influence on friction and wear, brake pressure, graphization degree and debris film formation interacted and affected each other. The friction and wear mechanism of C/C composites under different high temperature treatments needs further research.
Friction and Wear Properties of Carbon/carbon Composites with Different Martix Carbon

Abstract:The quasi-3D C/C composites with rough laminar (RL) and smooth laminar(SL) pytolytic carbon were fabricated by needled felt through CVI and impregnation with liquid pitch and resin, and their friction and wear properties under braking pressure of 0.6MPa and worn mechanism were studied. The results show that C/C composites by resin impregnation after CVD with RL have the most stable friction properties and appropriate friction coefficient and low oxidation loss, because the friction surfaces have relatively thick and uniform lubricant friction film and the wear mechanisms are the falling off of part friction film and oxidation wear loss and relatively slight abrasion wear; C/C composites by resin or pitch impregnation after CVD with SL have unstable friction and wear properties and higher wear loss owing to the thin and discontinuous friction film, and the wear mechanisms are also the falling off of part friction film and abrasion wear and larger oxidation wear loss. The higher the density, the more stable the braking curve, and the higher the friction coefficient and the lower the wear rates. Without the protection of pyrolytic carbon, C/C composites by pitch impregnation only have the highest dimension wear rates due to the largely fracture of fibers and the wear mechanism are mainly abrasion wear and oxidation wear.

Abstract:Carbon-carbon composites used in friction systems are becoming increasingly popular in aircrafts owing to their combination of low weight and high performance. Their current acceptance as brake materials is somewhat restrained due to two factors: cost and performance variations. Many manufacturers are taking steps toward improving their cost efficiency by utilizing lower cost precursor fibers and processing methodologies. At the same time, modifications to material properties are made to address performance issues of oxidation, wear, and variation of effectiveness. This paper describes the present status of the production technologies employed and details some of the remaining issues relative to braking performance.

Friction and Wear Behaviors of Surface-Modified Carbon Fabric/Epoxy Resin Composites

Abstract:Carbon fabric (CF) was pretreated by air-plasma bombardment and then further modified by deposition of polydopamine on the surface of the pretreated CF. Epoxy resin composites reinforced by unmodified or surface-modified carbon fabric were fabricated. The friction and wear behaviors of the resulting composites were evaluated in a ring-on-block contact mode. The flexural strength and Rockwell hardness of the composites were also evaluated. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the unmodified and modified composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The surface treatment increased the surface roughness and changed the surface topography of the CF, which contributed to enhancing the interfacial adhesion of the composites and thus improved the mechanical properties and tribo-performance. The friction and wear properties of both the unfilled and filled composites were highly dependent on the load and sliding velocity. Moreover, the results were supplemented with scanning electron micrographs to help understand the possible wear mechanisms.

Abstract:Thermosetting polymers and composites have excellent tribological performance,such as low frictional coefficient,good chemical stability,noise reduction and shock absorption.In this study,the characteristic mechanisms of abrasion,erosive wear and adhesive wear of polymer composites were introduced.The tribological performance and research situation of the thermosetting polymers and composites involving phenol formaldehyde resin,epoxy resin,polyurethane and crosslinked polyimide were reviewed.The application and prospect of these thermosetting resins were discussed as well.

Abstract:In order to enhance the friction and wear performance of carbon fiber/steel composite structures, experiments were conducted to adjust the ratio of thermosetting epoxy resin and C12-C14 glycol ether. A modified liquid was developed that could fully fill the gaps in the carbon fiber and enhance the adhesion characteristics between the fiber surface and 18CrMnTiH round steel material. The effects of self-made modified epoxy adhesive and single-component epoxy adhesive on the mechanical properties of composite materials were compared using ISO814-86 determination of the bond strength of sulfur-cured rubber to metal—two-plate method and international standard ISO1747-1976 determination of the shear strength of sulfur-cured rubber bonded to rigid metal plates—four-plate shear method. The friction and wear performance test analyzed the friction coefficient of composite materials under different pretreatment times. The results showed that the pretreatment treatment effectively reduced the friction coefficient of carbon fiber and effectively extended the service life of the material. This study has certain reference significance for extending the friction and wear resistance performance of carbon fiber-reinforced relative motion metal parts.

Abstract:The copper matrix composites reinforced with short carbon fibers(CFs) were prepared by cold press and sintering using copperized short CFs.The friction and wear properties of the composites were tested.The influence of short CFs contents,load and rotating speed on tribological behavior of composites was discussed.The results showed that the wear resistance improved with the increasing of fiber volume fraction.Both friction coefficient and wear mass loss increased with increasing load and rotating speed respectively.The wear mechanism was transferred from abrasive wear for pure Cu to delamination wear for Cu/short CFs composites.

Abstract:Due to its low friction coefficient and wear rate, and good self-lubrication, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite is used as friction material. The easy interlaminar delamination and low impact damage tolerance of conventional CFRP laminates lead the friction materials to wear seriously, which causes the early-stage failure. Here, carbon fiber/epoxy stitched composites were prepared by the resin transfer molding technology. Effects of load and stitch parameters on the friction and wear properties of stitched composites under dry conditions were investigated through experiment and simulation. The coefficients of friction (COFs) of composites increase linearly at the initial stage, and then decrease from a maximum peak to a relatively stable state value. Samples with a high stitch density and a small stitch spacing along the sliding direction has low COF values and wear rates. With the increase of the normal load, COFs and the wear rate both decrease first and then increase. The wear tracks on the surface of CF/EP stitched composites are generated by comprehensive effects of cutting, adhesive and fatigue wears. This study provides comprehensive characterization and deep understanding of friction and wear properties of carbon fiber/epoxy stitched composites, which will broaden the CFRP application as frication material.

Abstract:Abstract Vacuum sintering technology is used to prepare PEEK composite materials. The friction and wear test of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and its composite materials under different temperature and dry friction conditions was carried out using a ball-disk friction and wear test machine. Scanning electron microscope and white light total threedimensional profiler were used to observe the surface morphology of the material before and after wear, and compare the material surface before and after the experiment, Study the effect of carbon fibre content and temperature on the tribology properties of materials. At the same time, the wear mechanism of the material is studied.

Abstract:The friction and wear behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is dependent on fabrication, operational and environmental parameters. In particular, the type of fibers employed seems to have crucial influence. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), discovered less than 20 years ago, aroused big enthusiasm around the world because of their excellent properties and potential application in many fields. Compared with carbon fibers, CNTs possess an ultra-high strength, modulus and perfect graphite-layered structure, which imply their promising application as wearable materials in tribological fields. Friction and wear test results suggest that, compared with carbon fiber-reinforced composites, composites with CNTs as reinforcing elements exhibit more stable frictional coefficient and lower wear rates, especially at the high temperature. Based on experimental results conducted on epoxy resin and carbon matrix composites, two possible mechanisms about friction and wear process are proposed. In addition, some potential tribological applications of CNT-reinforced composites are discussed in brief.

Abstract:Carbon-carbon composites are advanced materials known for their high strength, high-temperature stability, and superior thermal conductivity. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and compressive strength are examined, as well as thermal properties like the coefficient of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity, to understand the characteristics of the composite. Carbon-carbon composites are ideal for the aerospace industry’s need for lightweight and high-performance materials. Tribological and surface properties are relevant to this discussion, given the use case of carbon-carbon composites in extreme conditions, the effect of exposing the composite to different fluids and the change in friction and wear properties. Coatings can protect the composite from environmental factors such as UV radiation, oxidation, and erosion. Self-healing composites that can repair themselves can increase the lifespan of structures while reducing maintenance costs. These have been used in aerospace applications such as airplane braking systems, rocket nozzles, and re-entry vehicle heat shields. Furthermore, researchers have recently addressed the problem of finishing and drilling without delamination and loss of properties, and this study looks into unconventional methods that can be adopted for the same. This study aims to provide an overview of the current state of carbon-carbon composite materials and their applications.

Influence of Running-In on the Friction Coefficient of C/C Composite Materials for Aircraft Brakes

Abstract:This work describes experimental studies on the effect of running-in on the tribological properties of friction carbon–carbon (C/C) composite materials used in the production of disc brakes on Russian airplanes. Three groups of friction material were selected for the study, differing in the reinforcement of the pec matrix. The first and second groups' samples were made of Termar brand carbon composite on the basis of discrete graphitized fiber and different from each other in the length of filaments in the finished material. The third group of samples was made of a composite based on carbonized fiber. The friction coefficient was determined on a tribometer according to a scheme in which the contact pin was on the disc at room temperature (23°C) by a method of a two-factor planned experiment in the range of normal pressures 2—22 MPa and sliding velocities 0.03—0.30 m/s. The study of the third body on the friction path was carried out by Raman spectroscopy using an exciting green laser with a wavelength of 532 nm. The results obtained in this work show that the running-in of the studied C/C materials leads to an increase in the friction coefficient. This is due to the appearance of a third body on the friction track, which is a thin layer of wear particles. By Raman spectroscopy it was show that the third body mainly contains carbon fibers. This work demonstrates the prospects for improving the C/C friction properties by increasing the tribological properties of carbon fibers used in the manufacture of composites.

Abstract:Abstract The friction material used for the brake pads should have a low wear rate, outstanding thermal stability to hold the braking properties of the vehicle and coefficient of friction should constant under different operating conditions which include loads which applied, temperature, dry or wet braking environment and speed. Due to this reason, every newly developed friction material’s fabrication should undergo a series of experimental tests to evaluate the friction as well as wear properties. In this article a study of frictional and wear behavior of friction material for ecological brake pads of road vehicles discussed. In the formulation of the friction material shells as a filler, a small amount of metal, silicon carbide, graphite, resin and hexametiltetramine were used. The main objective of the paper refers to the investigation of the impact of the working regime on friction material’s tribological characteristics. In this sense, were studied the evolution of the coefficient of friction and the thermal field at the contact surface between the friction couplings, the influence of load on the friction coefficient at different speeds and the influence of load on wear rate at a constant speed. The knowledge of the functional properties of the newly developed friction material produced in the laboratory provides the possibility of pertinent assessments regarding the durability of the brake pads during operations, as well as on the quantity of wear products released into the atmosphere. The results concluded that as a filler material this species of shells may be used in the fabrication of brake pads for road vehicles.

Abstract:A large amount of primary energy is lost due to friction, and the study of new additive materials to improve friction performance is in line with the concept of low carbon. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have advantages in drag reduction and wear resistance with their hollow structure and self-lubricating properties. This review investigated the mechanism of improving friction properties of blocky composites (including polymer, metal, and ceramic-based composites) with CNTs' incorporation. The characteristic tubular structure and the carbon film make low wear rate and friction coefficient on the surface. In addition, the effect of CNTs' aggregation and interfacial bond strength on the wear resistance was analyzed. Within an appropriate concentration range of CNTs, the blocky composites exhibit better wear resistance properties. Based on the differences in drag reduction and wear resistance in different materials and preparation methods, further research directions of CNTs have been suggested.

Abstract:The mechanical parameters of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), microstructures of carbon fiber (CF) and PTFE-CF interface were calculated based on the density function theory, molecular dynamics and finite element simulations. Then the friction models of GCr15-PTFE/CF composite were constructed, and the friction mechanisms of PTFE/CF composite were analyzed. The results show that the friction coefficients of composite materials containing different CF defect ratios are almost the same, indicating that the defect ratio has little influence on the friction coefficient. The position of CF in the PTFE matrix has a great impact on CF damage; the closer it is to the upper specimen during friction, the more serious the damage. In addition, the disordered structure was observed to have the most serious damage.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, carbon nanomaterials have attracted great interest for their confirmed friction and wear performances as well as important tribological applications. This article gives a comprehensive review of the recent developments of four typical carbon nanomaterials including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene and nanodiamonds in tribology. Firstly, the applications of the four types of carbon nanomaterials in coatings for anti-wear enhancement and friction reduction are discussed. Secondly, the improvement of tribological behaviors for bulk materials by using CNTs, graphene and nanodiamonds as additives is reviewed. Thirdly, the discussion is conducted on the mechanisms of the fullerenes, CNTs, graphene and nanodiamonds acting as additives in lubricants to achieve friction and wear reduction. Fourthly, the progress on superlubricity using CNTs and graphene is highlighted. Finally, this review concludes with an outlook of the future studies on carbon nanomaterials in tribology, their key challenges for commercial applications, and possible solutions.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>The demand of carbon/carbon composite material is continuously growing in many fields. However, difficulties are easily faced during wear process such as micro crack, fiber breakage and delamination. This study attempts to improve friction behavior of carbon/carbon composite material by using of ultrasonic vibration. Based on experimental results, it is raveled that ultrasonic vibration provides more excellent tribological properties. Obvious reduction in friction force and surface damages is obtained with ultrasonic vibration. Moreover, ultrasonic vibration also produces small size particles, which is more effective in lubrication film formation. In addition, due to reduced friction force and excellent heat dissipation, lower friction temperature is achieved. Finally, it appears that ultrasonic vibration is beneficial to improve friction behavior of carbon/carbon composite materials.</p>
