Abstract:Abstract The effect of titanium on the as-cast microstructure of a hypereutectic high-chromium cast iron was investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results indicate that the primary M 7C3 carbides are refined and spheroidized with the addition of a suitable amount of titanium. TiC is found in the primary carbide by energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. The mechanism of titanium modification on the microstructure of the alloy is also discussed. In addition, the impact test result indicates that, compared with the hypereutectic high-chromium cast iron without titanium addition, the impact toughness value of hypereutectic high-chromium cast iron with titanium additions is improved and approximately reaches 6.4 J · cm−2.

Abstract:Fineness of microstructural constituents in the metallic alloys affects their mechanical properties. This study sought to determine the effects of selected levels of titanium, cerium and aluminum on the fineness of microstructural constituents within ductile iron. A hypoeutectic iron was studied. Cerium additions in the amounts of 0.01 wt.% and 0.03 wt.%, titanium additions in the amounts of 0.02 wt.% and 0.04 wt.%, and aluminum addition at the amount of 0.02 wt.% were tested. The influences of the selected additions were determined using three methods: direct secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) measurement, liquidus recalescence analysis and tensile testing. The results of the study showed that at above a critical value, cerium refined the SDAS effectively within a distance of 22 mm from the casting bottom surface, whereas for the locations with slower cooling rates, Ce did not refine microstructure and impaired elongation. Titanium had an adverse effect on refining the microstructure when Al-containing inoculant was used. The addition of Al was found effective at achieving a refined microstructure and improved mechanical properties. The inclusion composition and number density change as a result of alloy additions were measured.

Abstract:The effect of Ti on the microstructure of the 4wt%C-20wt%Cr hypereutectic high-chromium cast iron was studied in this paper. The results show that the primary carbides and the total carbides (primary carbides and eutectic carbides) all were refined gradually with the increase of Ti, and the volume fraction of TiC also increased with the increase of Ti, while the TiC particles grew and were agglomerated. The refining mechanism of Ti may be: the dispersive TiC particles in the melt may act as the heterogeneous matrix of the primary carbides, which may also impede the growth of the primary carbides; the alloy's hypereutectic degree was decreased due to the formation of TiC, which is beneficial for the refinement of the alloy.

Abstract:Two specimens of cast iron, namely A1 and A2, the size, shape, and interconnectivity of graphite are analyzed using X-ray tomography. The results reveal that the morphology of vermicular graphite is a coral-tree-like. The interconnectivity of A2 specimen is better than A1 specimen. The results also demonstrate that the thermal conductivity of A2 specimen is larger than A1 specimen, whereas the tensile strength of A2 specimen is smaller than A1 specimen. With an increase in temperature, the thermal conductivity of both A1 and A2 specimen increases initially, and then decreases, whereas the tensile strength decreases slightly at first, and then decreases rapidly. Finally, the fracture surfaces of both A1 and A2 specimen are studied.

Abstract:In this study, the mechanical properties, wear behavior, and microstructures of high-strength low-alloy steels with titanium contents of 0, 0.04, 0.1, and 2 wt% were systematically investigated. Steel microstructures were examined via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The wear properties of the steel samples were evaluated by measuring their weight losses, while the wear mechanism was elucidated via scanning electron microscopy. The worn steel surfaces exhibited very rough topographies with well-defined craters and grooves, which were produced by high-angle and low-angle impacts, respectively. The wear resistance of the steels strongly depended on their microhardness and impact toughness. Compared with the other steel specimens, the steel with 0.04 wt% titanium, which contained martensite and lower bainite particles, possessed superior mechanical properties, i.e., a hardness of 745 HV and an impact toughness of 97 J/cm3. Meanwhile, the steel with 2.0 wt% titanium exhibited the lowest abrasive resistance, impact toughness, hardness, tensile strength, and yield strength among all the specimens. These results indicate that excessive titanium content promotes the precipitation of large particles in the steel matrix, which degrades its mechanical properties.

Abstract:This paper studies the effect of titanium concentration on the morphology of primary M7C3 carbides in hypereutectic high chromium white cast iron by means of the optical microscopy (OM), the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the X-ray diffraction (XRD), the energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and Leica image analyzer. Theoretical calculation shows that solute Ti atoms can react with carbon and form TiC particles under certain conditions in the melt of hypereutectic high chromium cast iron. The experimental results show that the morphology of primary M7C3 carbides can be improved by adding a suitable amount of Ti. This improvement correlated with the emergence of TiC particles. These particles can act as the substrates for heterogeneous nucleation of primary M7C3 carbides, which results in significant refinement of the final grain size.

Abstract:The Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy is a new developed high strength die cast alloy which can be used for structural parts in the automotive and aerospace industry. In this study, the effect of various amount of Ti on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy under as-cast and T6 heat treatment conditions are investigated. The addition of Ti results in the formation of Al3Ti intermetallic phase, and the volume fraction and forming temperature increases with the increase of titanium content. With 0.1wt% Ti addition, the best mechanical properties of the alloy. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation reach up to 350 MPa, 440 MPa and 3.29% respectively after heat treatment. Titanium content should be controlled below 0.10%.

Abstract:Experiments were carried out to observe the variation in microstructure and mechanical properties of gray cast iron by adding pearlite promoting alloying elements such as Ti, Sn and W. Results show that adding Sn, Ti, and W with different concentrations improve the microstructure, Brinell hardness and tensile strength of gray cast iron. With the increase of alloying element concentration, the average graphite length and graphite content increase linearly. At the same time, average cell size and the maximum graphite length also decrease linearly. Brinell hardness and tensile strength of gray cast iron also increase with an increase in alloying elements contents, and attain the maximum when Ti = 0.561%, Sn = 0.561% and W = 0.945%. However, at higher concentrations of Ti = 0.810%, Sn = 0.631% and W = 1.351%, the tensile strength decreases from 333 MPa to 297 MPa and the Brinell hardness decreases from 248 HB to 225 HB. The decrease in tensile strength and Brinell hardness at the higher concentration level is attributed to the formation of coarse and thick graphite flakes.

Abstract:Influence of different Ti content on mechanical properties of micro-alloyed steel was studied.The Hall-Petch grain refinement formula and Ashby-Orowan precipitation strengthening model were carried out to analyze the reason for the variation.The results show that the yield strength, tensile strength and the yield ratio increase in varying degrees with the increasing of Ti content in micro-alloyed steel.Besides, the growth trend of yield strength and tensile strength increase rapidly when Ti content is beyond 0.042%.The reason for this is that, the abundant Ti in combination with C dissolves out fine particles of TiC, which plays a strong effect on precipitation strengthening when Ti content is beyond 0.042%.Elogation rate decreases with the increasing of Ti content, and its declining trend also decreases as the Ti content increases, which is due to that larger size of precipitated particle of TiN and Ti4C2S2, and the stronger the embrittlement effects than that of TiC when the Ti content is lower.On account of the embrittlement effect of TiC, the strength of steel increases dramatically and its elongation rate decreases slightly.

Abstract:Microstructures and corrosion properties of pure titanium were characterized when iron was used as a grain refiner. The added Fe element acted as a strong grain refiner for pure titanium by forming β Ti phase at grain boundaries, and 0.15 wt% Fe was revealed to be a sufficient amount to make the grain size of pure titanium below 20 μm, which was the requirement for the desired titanium cathode. However, corrosion resistance was decreased with the Fe amount added. From the open circuit potential (OCP) results, it was obvious that the TiO2 stability against the reducing acid environment was deteriorated with the Fe amount, which seemed to be the main reason for the decreased corrosion resistance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that both the decrease in the compact oxide film’s resistance (Rb) and the appearance of the outer porous film occurred as a result of the dissolution of the TiO2 layer, whose phenomena became more apparent as more Fe was added.

Abstract:Titanium-based metal-metal composites show promises in many applications. In this work, iron-containing titanium-based composites were fabricated by using powder metallurgy method and rotary swaging process. Titanium-based composites with steel addition were sintered at temperature below TiFe eutectic temperature. Increase of the steel addition to 23% resulted in formation of TiFe intermetallic and density decrease in the composites. Further, the as-sintered composites present relatively good workability so hot rotary swaging of the as-sintered composites can be conducted. Steel particles were diffused into the Ti matrix and the composite transformed to a discontinuous β-Ti fiber-reinforced structure. As a result, mechanical properties (in axial direction) of the swaged composites were significantly improved. The tensile strength and elongation reached 1360 MPa and 9.3%, respectively.

Abstract:The effect of heat treatment temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a Fe–4.0C–18.0Cr–1.0Mo–1.0Ti (wt.%) hypereutectic high chromium white cast iron was investigated. The response of the alloy to heat treatment and, therefore, the microstructures developed, differed significantly. With the increase of the heat treatment temperature, the precipitated secondary carbides changed from M3C to M7C3 and the retained austenite content increased. With the increase of the heat treatment temperature, the bulk hardness and matrix microhardness both increased and reached peak values of 64.6HRC and 850HV, respectively at the temperature of 1000°C. But they all decreased at the heat treatment temperature of 1050°C. The impact toughness of the alloy increased significantly compared with the conventional cast hypereutectic high chromium white iron (containing 4.0wt.% C and 17.0wt.% Cr) without titanium and inoculation and its value was in the range of 6.1–6.9J/cm2, but it did not change very much with the increase of heat treatment temperature.

Abstract:The high strength thin walled ductile cast iron with no chill was produced by adding a certain amount of carbide forming element Mn and pearlite stabilizing element Cu,and its structure is all fine pearlite.The experimental results show that with 1.5% Cu addition the Y-shape sample has a tensile strength more than 900 MPa and an elongation of about 4%;while for the bar sample of Φ10 mm,its tensile strength is close to1 100 MPa and elongation is around 7%.

Abstract:Graphite morphology is a very important parameter affecting the properties of cast iron. In this study, the graphite morphology was characterized using both 3D and 2D structures. The experimental results revealed that when the graphite was less spheroidal, the graphite had greater interconnectivity in the 3D structure of the cast iron. The size, distribution, volume fraction, and shape of the graphite were estimated. Moreover, the influences of the graphite's morphology, size, and distribution on the tensile property and thermal conductivity at different temperatures were estimated. The experimental results revealed that with an increase in temperature, the thermal conductivity initially increased, and then decreased, whereas the tensile strength decreased slightly at first, and then decreased rapidly. In addition, with an increase in the percentage of compacted graphite, the tensile strength decreased and the thermal conductivity increased. The fracture surfaces of tensile specimens were also estimated. Finally, the mechanism of tensile strength and the model of thermal conductivity were investigated.

Abstract:Carbon neutrality of the steel industry requires the development of high-strength steel. The mechanical properties of low-alloy steel can be considerably improved at a low cost by adding a small amount of titanium (Ti) element, namely Ti microalloying, whose performance is related to Ti-contained second phase particles including inclusions and precipitates. By proper controlling the precipitation behaviors of these particles during different stages of steel manufacture, fine-grained microstructure and strong precipitation strengthening effects can be obtained in low-alloy steel. Thus, Ti microalloying can be widely applied to produce high strength steel, which can replace low strength steels heavily used in various areas currently. This article reviews the characteristics of the chemical and physical metallurgies of Ti microalloying and the effects of Ti microalloying on the phase formation, microstructural evolution, precipitation behavior of low-carbon steel during the steel making process, especially the thin slab casting and continuous rolling process and the mechanical properties of final steel products. Future development of Ti microalloying is also proposed to further promote the application of Ti microalloying technology in steel to meet the requirement of low-carbon economy.

Abstract:The present work studies the effects of titanium carbide (TiC) particle additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hypereutectic high chromium cast iron containing about 20%Cr and 4.0%C by the optical microscopy (OM), the transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the digital image analysis system, impact tester, and hardness tester. The carbides of high chromium cast iron are refined gradually and the shape of the primary M 7 C 3 -type carbides became more isotropic with the increase of TiC particles. When the addition of TiC particles exceeds 1.0 wt.%, the change of microstructure is not obvious. The hardness of high chromium cast iron has a slight increase and impact toughness has a obvious increase with the increase of TiC additions. However, when the addition of TiC particles exceeds 1.0 wt.%, the impact toughness has no obvious change.

Abstract:Spheroidal graphite cast irons (SGCIs) have been commonly used in automotive and energy sectors where superior mechanical strength and wear resistance are required. This paper investigated the performance of the SGCIs under severe wear conditions as a function of Ti content and cooling rate. SGCIs alloyed with various Ti content (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 wt%) were produced by green sand-casting process in different section sizes (10, 30, and 50 mm). Ball-on-disk type wear equipment with an Al 2 O 3 ball was used to determine the wear rates of the SGCI samples. With increasing Ti content, up to 45% of nodular graphite turned into vermicular graphite, depending on the Ti addition and section sizes. Carbide precipitation was observed in the matrix due to the carbide-forming effect of Ti. The hardness and wear resistance of the SGCIs were improved by adding Ti owing to the combined effects of increasing pearlite and TiC particles precipitated in the matrix. Thinner-wall castings provided a faster cooling rate, which improved hardness and wear resistance. Alloying with 0.5 wt% Ti decreased the wear rates up to 35%.

Abstract:The use of iron ores bearing titanium as a raw material is an effective measure to prevent hearth erosion and prolong the life of a blast furnace. In this research, the effect of titanium content on the precipitation behaviors of high-melting phases of carbon-saturated molten pig iron were studied by confocal scanning laser microscopy. The results showed that, when the titanium content was less than 0.25wt%, Fe3C was precipitated as a single phase from the molten carbon-saturated iron. The growth rate of the precipitated Fe3C crystals was very high, reaching 7387 μm2/s. When the titanium content in the molten pig iron was greater than 0.47wt%, TiC crystals precipitated first. The shape and size of the precipitated TiC crystals did not obviously change. After TiC was precipitated, the fluidity of the molten pig iron worsened. With a decrease in temperature, Fe3C was also precipitated but the growth rate of Fe3C was limited by the presence of the first precipitated TiC phase. The crystal size of the precipitated Fe3C was much smaller than that of pure Fe3C.

Abstract:In the present work, a β titanium alloy reinforced by trace TiB whiskers and TiC particles was fabricated by common casting and hot-forging. For comparative study, the unreinforced titanium matrix alloy was also fabricated by the same casting and forging process. The microstructure, room temperature, tensile properties and fracture characteristics of the composite and the matrix alloy are presented and discussed. Microstructural analysis of the composite revealed that the reinforcements were uniformly dispersed after forging. The size of the β grains in the composite was refined after solution treatment under the β field. The secondary α lath was also refined during aging heat treatment by the addition of trace boron and carbon. The results of the tensile tests show that the improvement in the strength of the composite can be attributed to the refinement in the grain size and the secondary α lath, while the remarkable reduction in the ductility can be ascribed to the cracking of the reinforcements and the decohesion at the interface between the reinforcements and the matrix.

Abstract:20Cr-8Ni stainless steel is used to manufacture heavy castings in industrial practice. Owing to the slow solidification rate of heavy castings, the as-cast structure is usually coarse, which reduces the mechanical properties. To refine the solidification structure, the effect of titanium addition on the as-cast structure and high-temperature tensile property was investigated in the laboratory. The ingots with 0.0036, 0.2, and 0.45 mass percent titanium were produced in the laboratory. On the basis of experiment and thermodynamic calculation through Thermo-Calc software, the typical inclusions changed from dual phase Si-Mn-Ti oxides to pure TiN or complex Ti2O3 + TiN with titanium content increasing. The equiaxed grain ratio of ingot increased from 51 percent to nearly 100 percent, and the size of equiaxed grain decreased owing to heterogeneous nucleation of δ-Fe. Besides, the equilibrium solidification model changed from the FA model to the F model, and the mass fraction of ferritic phase in ingots increased from 24.8 to 42.6 percent. As a result, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of ingots increased gradually, but the tensile elongation changed little owing to the increase of ferritic phase mass fraction and decrease of equiaxed grain size.
