Abstract:Ion sensitive of multi- wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) films were experimentally investigated in this paper. The experimental results showed that MWNTs films modificated through chemical method had better absorption performance to ion- rich gas. The sensor based MWNTs films demonstrated good sensitivity and fast response.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube and Polyaniline(Pani)composite for gas sensing were investigated in this paper.Pani coated multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)was synthesized by means of in-sute polymerization and dielectrophoresis.The nano-composite sensor showed a 3.4 reversible resistance change to 10×10-6 NH3 with a response time of 15 s while the sensitivities of Pani film sensor is 1.9 in the contrast experiment.The results indicate that the nano-composite sensitivity and sensing dynamic are improved due to the nanostructure with ultra-high surface-volume ratio and good conductivity.The mechanism of sensitivity to NH3 of the sensor was also discussed.

Abstract:In order to improve the sensing-properties of carbon nanotube based composite for potential applications in chemical sensors, CNTs/PANi core/shell-structured nanowires were prepared with in-situ polymerization approach. A series of characterizations was carried out by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, and so on. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on CNTs/PANi core/shell-structured nanowires and interdigital-structured electrodes on flexible polymer substrate. The gas-sensing behaviors of the sensor to some gases operating at room temperature were examined. Results showed that the sensitivity of CNTs/PANi core/shell-structured nanowires was increased dramaticly compared with pure carbon nanotube materials. This provides a carbon nanotube based composite materials with enhanced gas-sensitivity, which would have potential applications in some chemical sensors.

Abstract:Pd and Cu particles were doped into the multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) preprocessed using a mixture of H2SO4 and HNO3 by means of chemical reaction method and electrochemistry method respectively.Amperometric sensors were fabricated using the original and doped MWCNTs.The responses to formaldehyde,benzene,toluene and xylene with different volume fractions were tested using an electrochemical analyzer.High sensitivity and reproducibility of these sensors indicate the feasible VOCs detection at room temperature.Metal particles doping results in great change of sensitivity and selectivity.The main impacts on the gas sensing property include: the structural defects of MWCNTs,the interaction of gas molecules and metal clusters,and the catalytic active site formed by metal particles.
A Novel Gas-Ionization Sensor Based on Aligned Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel gas-ionization sensor based on aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) at normal temperature and pressure. It consists of an Al plate electrode, a plastic thin film and a MWNT electrode. Breakdown voltages and discharge currents are recorded through a peripheral detecting circuit. I-V curves formed by cubic spline interpolation algorithm utilizing experimental data help the sensor system improve the detecting accuracy. Some experiments are conducted in order to explore MWNT gas sensor properties, such as the effect of interelectrode distance and environmental factors. The novel MWNT-based gas-ionization sensor described here exhibits high accuracy, repeatability and stability. The sensor is promising for use in various fields.

Abstract:Sensitive, selective and fast detection of chemical warfare agents is necessary for anti-terrorism purposes. In our search for functional materials sensitive to dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a simulant of sarin and other toxic organophosphorus compounds, we found that zinc oxide (ZnO) modification potentially enhances the absorption of DMMP on a manganese dioxide (MnO2) surface. The adsorption behavior of DMMP was evaluated through the detection of tiny organophosphonate compounds with quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors coated with ZnO-modified MnO2 nanofibers and pure MnO2 nanofibers. Experimental results indicated that the QCM sensor coated with ZnO-modified nanostructured MnO2 film exhibited much higher sensitivity and better selectivity in comparison with the one coated with pure MnO2 nanofiber film. Therefore, the DMMP sensor developed with this composite nanostructured material should possess excellent selectivity and reasonable sensitivity towards the tiny gaseous DMMP species.
Gas sensing characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Impedance spectroscopy was used to study the gas sensing behavior of both capacitance and resistance based sensors employing multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as the active sensing element. Studies revealed the chemisorption of reducing gases upon the surface of the MWNTs. Increasing sensor impedance was observed with increasing humidity or partial pressures of ammonia, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The impedance changes are attributed to p-type conductivity in semiconducting MWNTs, and the formation of Schottky barriers between the metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. Reversible behavior is demonstrated for the MWNT sensors in response to humidity, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The MWNT sensors strongly respond to ammonia behaving as dosimeters.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were chemically modified with hydroxylamine hydrochloride salt and formed a composite with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The morphology observations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that MWCNTs were well dispersed in the PMMA film. The electrical responses of the composite to methanol vapor were investigated. The composite exhibited a decreased resistivity upon exposure to the reducing methanol vapor, denoting an n-type response which was fast, reversible and reproducible at room temperature. In addition, the response was free from the interference of humidity. It is proposed that the n-type, instead of the usually observed p-type, response of the MWCNT based composite, which is supported by its decreased resistivity in the reducing NH3 vapor, is related to the modification of MWCNTs by the chemical treatment.

Abstract:The humidity characteristics of the multi-wall carbon nanotube films was studied.A sensor based on multi-wall carbon nanotube was developed for humidity detection at room temperature.The electrical conductivity of the dried carbon nanotube film decreased when the electrode was exposed to higher relative humidity(RH) atmosphere.And there is a good correlation between the increasing resistance amplitude and the RH.In addition,when Multi-wall carbon modified with the coupling agent 1-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride(EDC),the reaction to different RH surrounding is remarkable.Their mechanism of humidity characteristics were discussed.

Abstract:A composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polypyrrole (Ppy) has been synthesized by vapor phase polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectra, Raman spectra, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction study and scanning electron microscopy. Its gas sensitive characteristics towards NH3 vapor were investigated at room temperature. It was found that the composite exhibited a higher sensitivity than both Ppy and MWCNTs separately. In addition, the response was reversible even when the concentration of NH3 vapor was as high as 12,500ppm, in contrast to the usually observed unrecoverable response of carbon nanotubes and their composite to low concentration NH3 vapor at room temperature. The oxidizing agents and dopants used for preparation of the composite have a great effect on its gas sensitive characteristics, which is related to its morphology and contact with the electrode.

Abstract:UV-vis absorption, luminescence and field emission properties have been studied in pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and MWNTs with different functionalized groups, i.e., MWNT attached with the carboxylic and hydroxyl group (s-MWNT), MWNT attached with dodecylamine (MWNT-CONHC12H25) and MWNT attached with polyaniline (s-MWNT doped PANI). Redshift in the absorption spectra and blue shift in photoluminescence with the increase of volume of the functional group on the surface of the MWNTs were observed. Soluble MWNTs and long alkyl grafted MWNTs are luminescent compared with pristine MWNTs, while in the polyaniline wrapped MWNTs, luminescence is quenched. The electron emission properties of these carbon nanotube films are highly dependent on the physical parameters of carbon nanotubes and the nanotube content of their films. s-MWNT films exhibit the most excellent field emission characteristics among all samples due to the cleanliness of s-MWNT samples and partially due to the structural defects on s-MWNT tips as well as the optimum tip density.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) based gas sensors for detecting gaseous molecules of ammonia (NH3) were developed. MWNTs were prepared using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The gas sensors, in which the nanotubes laid under the electrodes, were fabricated using electron-beam lithography and lift-off techniques. It is found that the conductance of MWNTs decreases when the sensors successively exposed to NH3 gas at room temperature of 25 °C. The MWNT-based sensors are sensitive to NH3 gas. This suggests that the MWNTs could be a good candidate material for NH3 detection at room temperature.

Abstract:In this research, we propose a new simple method to fabricate hydrogen gas sensors by stacking multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sheets. MWCNT sheets offer a larger surface area and more CNT contact, which are key factors for gas sensing, because of their super-high alignment and end-to-end structure compared to traditional CNT film. Besides, MWCNT sheets can be directly drawn from spinnable CNT arrays on large scales. Therefore, this method is a potential answer for the mass production and commercialization of CNT-based sensors with high responsivity. By stacking layers of sheets in various arrangements, the microstructure and CNT interactions in the layers were changed and their influence on gas sensing investigated. It was observed that the sample with three layers of sheet and functionalized with 3 nm thick Pd showed the best gas sensing performance, with a response of 12.31% at 4% H2 and response time below 200 s.

Abstract:A gas sensor based on multi-wall carbon nanotubes was developed for toluene detection at room temperature. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes in water solution was spread between the interdigitated Au electrodes, which was splashed on alumina substrate. The electrical conductivity of the dried carbon nanotubes film decreased when the electrode was exposed to toluene. And there is a good linear correlation between the decreasing amplitude of condactivity and the toluene concentration.This result indicates that multi-wall carbon nanotube is a promising sensing material for toluene detection at room temperature.

Abstract:We have developed a tungsten disulfide (WS2)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite based QCM gas sensor for (trimethylamine) TMA gas sensing of low concentrations. WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite was synthesized via the hydrothermal method and was characterized for surface morphology, nanostructure, thermal stability, and elementary composition. The TMA-sensing properties of WS2/MWCNTs nanocomposite based QCM sensor were investigated. The composite based QCM sensor showed faster response time, strong response amplitude, good gas capacity, and good selectivity and stability compared with as prepared WS2 and MWCNTs-1 based QCM sensor. The response time of WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was 294.1 and 142.9 s shorter than WS2 and MWCNTs-1 for 500 ppb TMA gas. And the response of the WS2/MWCNTs based QCM sensor was almost stable over 40 days, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 76 ppb calculated by the ICH method. This was ascribed to the fact that MWCNTs provided a skeleton for the growth of WS2 nanosheets and avoided agglomeration. The special structure could not only improve the structure ability but also expose more active adsorption sites. In order to further investigate the adsorption mechanism of the TMA molecule on (pure/functionalized) WS2 materials, density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on first-principle were conducted in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package under ideal conditions.
Study of VOCs Sensing Property of Carbon Nanotubes and Their Modified Nano-Composites

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and preprocessed. Nano-composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes were prepared using chemical modifying method by ethylene diamine, dodecylamine and benzdine with the existence of N,N-dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCC). The five materials formed a film onto an interdigital gold electrode with Al_2O_3 substrate by spraying the suspensions. Conductivity of each material based sensor was measured using the electrochemical instrumentation. Highly sensitive and reproducibility of these sensors indicate feasible VOCs detection at room temperature. And the difference in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensing properties of these materials makes them ideal for the formation of sensor array used in qualitative and quantitative detection of multicomponent VOCs.

Abstract:Gas sensors based on Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) for Ammonia (NH3) detection at room temperature were studied. MWNT were prepared by chemical vapor deposition method, and coated on Au electrodes, which were sputtered on anodised aluminium substrate and then immersed in thiol solution for 24h. It is found that the MWNT based sensors have a reversible sensing capacity to NH3 gas with response time and recovery time were less than 1min, respectively. At room temperature of 25°C, resistance changes of the sensor were logarithmic dependent on NH3 gas concentrations. It is suggested that MWNTs could be a promising sensing material for NH3 detection at room temperature.

Abstract:In this research, we proposed a highly sensitive hydrogen sensor based on a new suspended structure of cross-stacked multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sheet. MWCNT sheet is a kind of CNT film which has a super-high CNT alignment and can be easily prepared by drawing from the spinnable CNT array in large scales. By stacking the sheets onto an electrode with a 1 x 1 cm hole in mutually perpendicular directions, sensors with suspended cross-stacked structure were realized. Afterwards, a two-side Pd functionalization was introduced. The effects of suspended structure, cross-stacked structure and two-side Pd functionalization were investigated respectively. It was observed that the sample with 2 + 1 layers of cross-stacked MWCNT sheet and two-side 3 nm Pd deposition showed the best gas sensing performance with a relative resistance change of 35.30% at 4% H-2. This result indicates that the proposed sensor is one of the best among all reported MWCNT based hydrogen sensors. The method demonstrated in this research gives a potential solution for the mass production of CNT-based sensors with high sensitivity and reliability. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Humidity Sensitivity of Carbon Nanotube and Poly (dimethyldiallylammonium Chloride) Composite Films

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a highly sensitive humidity sensor based on carbon nanotube and poly (dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) composite films. The composite film is deposited between interdigitated electrodes on a Si/SiO2 substrate through layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The resistance stability of the composite film is effectively improved through thermal annealing, and I-V characteristic of the film exhibits a very good linear behavior. The resistance increases exponentially with relative humidity from 20% to 98%, and a much higher sensitivity in comparison with pure carbon nanotube networks is achieved. With temperature increased, the water vapor density versus RH shifts upwards, while the resistance is reduced downwards. The resistance is dependent on temperatures with a negative coefficient. The composite films with multiwalled carbon nanotubes show an adjacent sensitivity, compared with the single-walled carbon nanotube composite films. The experimental results show that the humidity sensors have a fast response and a short recovery time, and their response is reversible. A simple model is proposed to explain the change of composite film resistance with humidity. The carbon nanotubes junctions may play a more important role in the overall resistance change for water molecule absorption.
Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube Gas Sensors Modified with Amino-Group to Detect Low Concentration of Formaldehyde

Abstract:Gas sensors with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with amino-groups on interdigitated electrodes (IDE) were fabricated to detect low concentration of formaldehyde at room temperature. Effects of content of amino groups on sensing responses against various interfering circumstances and low concentration of formaldehyde were investigated. The sensor behaved high relative resistance changes to formaldehyde and lower response to interfering gases such as acetone, carbon dioxide, ammonia, toluene and ethanol. When the concentration of formaldehyde was 20ppb, the relative resistance changes of the sensor modified with 18.19% amino-group reached 1.73%. The sensor displayed high chemical selectivity, fast response and good reproducibility to low concentration of formaldehyde, which was attributed to the properties of MWNTs and the interaction between the surface of MWCNTs and amino-group.

Abstract:A novel gas ionization sensor based on corona discharge using carbon nanotubes(CNTs) was proposed.The sensor utilizes the unique physical structure and the field emission effect of CNTs.Due to adopting the method of anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) template to grow aligned CNTs,the electrode and CNTs were integrated,so the gas sensor simplified its structure and processing techniqus.With controlled DC voltage applied to the CNTs electrode,the sharp tips of CNTs generated high electric fields,so corona discharge was produced easily at low voltages.For different gases having their unique breakdown voltage and discharge current,it is possible to identify one gas or certain mixture gases.The influences of temperature and humidity were discussed,and the performance of the sensor was also evaluated.Experiments show that the CNTs gas sensor has small size,fast response,good sensitivity and selectivity,and is convenient to be operated at room temperature and feasible for gas detection.
