The refractive index distribution in laser crystal is simulated. The figures of laser waist and thermal focus length dependence on pump power are received, too.

Abstract:The thermal effects of LD end-pumped Nd:YAG high-repetition-rate solid laser during the optical pumping are the important factor which affects the laser output characteristic and the system integrated performance. Starting with the thermal conduction function, the numerical value of temperature steady distributing in the laser crystal is found by the finite element method. And thermal lens effect is counted and analyzed. Then the separate parameters design of thermal insensitive cavity is processed to compensate the thermal lens effect by the propagation-circle and transform-circle graphic analysis and design method. The study establishes the base for optimizing the design of laser to improve the stabilization of laser output.

Abstract:Assuming the pump light to be Gaussian beam and considering the nonlinear absorption of the medium, we establish the heat conduction model to describe the thermal effects in a double end-pumped Cs vapor laser. Combined with the experimental parameters, the radial temperature distribution and accordingly the optical path difference under different pump powers are obtained by numerically solving the model. Furthermore, the influence of operating parameters on the thermal focal length is investigated.

Abstract:The 1.3 μm laser source has a wide range of applications in the fields of sodium beacons, optical communication, image display and laser medicine. In the paper, we demonstrate a laser with an LD end-pumped Nd:YAG slab crystal hybrid cavity Innoslab structure. When the pump power is high, the thermal effect of the laser during oscillation has an impact on the stability of the resonant cavity and the quality of the beam. We demonstrate a finite element model of an Nd:YAG crystal by means of heat conduction theory and analyse the effect of the temperature distribution at the crystal end face and the pump spot width on the thermal effect of the crystal. Calculations show that the finer the pump spot, the more pronounced the thermal effect of the crystal. In the experiment, the Nd:YAG slab crystal was doped at a concentration of 1at%, and a mixing cavity is constructed with a concave spherical mirror of R1 = 1000 mm and a convex cylindrical mirror of R2 = 900 mm; the length of the cavity is 55 mm; a negative cylindrical lens of Rc = -100 mm is inserted in the cavity as a compensating mirror. Finally, the maximum output power in the resonant cavity without the compensating mirror was 46.9 W; with the addition of the compensating mirror the maximum output power was 40.5 W; the vertical beam quality was increased from 2.98 to 1.28.

Abstract:The thermal effects of the diode end-pumped Nd:YVO4 slab laser crystal are investigated both analytically and numerically. The theoretical model is established with considering the divergence of the pump beam in the slab. A detailed theoretical analysis of the temperature, stress and the focal length of thermal lens are presented. Using 3D finite element analysis, an accurate numerical solution based on the theoretical model is achieved. Our analysis includes the thermal fracture damage of the thermally and optically anisotropic slab and the predicated values are compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:Temperature field and thermal lens effects of laser diode end pumped quadrate composite Nd∶YAG rod are investigated through numerical analysis methods.Numerical solution of temperature field for end pumped configuration is obtained,as well as phase-retardation distribution ΔΦT(r)for the axial light caused by radial temperature gradient,and the results are compared with conventional crystal under the same pump condition.The results show that in both composite and conventional crystal,the differences of their highest temperature increase as the absorption coefficient increasing.Composite crystal leads a lower temperature rise in laser crystal,and also reduces the portion lens effect from the lessened distortion of pump end.ΔΦT(r)in composite crystal is similar to that of conventional one,and it does not accord with radius quadratic relationship.There is an aberration Δφ between the phase retardation of the thermal lens and referenced spherical lens.ΔΦT(r)corresponds with that of a spherical lens approximately at rwp,and the equivalent foci fGRIN approaches to the same value of conventional rod,whereas Δφ increased quickly with the increase of laser beam radius at rwp.

Abstract:The thermal effects induced by high-power diode pumping in the Nd : YVO4 slab laser crystal are numerically modeled. Using three-dimensional (3D) finite volume method, an accurate numerical solution based on heat transfer equation is achieved. The transient temperature distribution curves and the steady state 3D temperature distributions of the diode double end-pumped, uniformly face-pumped and the periodical face-pumped Nd : YVO4 slab are presented.

Abstract:The thermal effect and the heat generation in diode-end-pumped continuous-wave 914-nm Nd:YVO 4 lasers are investigated in detail.A theoretical model of a diode end-pumped solid-state laser is constructed to analyse the influence of fractional thermal loading on the thermal effect in the Nd:YVO 4 laser based on finite element analysis.The thermal focal lengths and the end-surface deformations of laser rods in Nd:YVO 4 quasi-three-level and four-level lasers are measured and compared with the results obtained by ordinary interferometry for the demonstration of higher thermal loading in 914-nm laser.Finally the fractional thermal loading in the Nd:YVO 4 quasi-three-level laser is calculated by matching the experimental and the simulated end deformations.

Abstract:This paper focused on the thermal effect and lasing characteristics of Laser diode (LD) end-pumped continuous-wave (CW) Tm:YAG crystal. The temperature-distribution of Tm:YAG rod was shown by using a software of COMSOL. The thermal focal length was calculated and the stability of the resonator was analyzed. Maximum output power of 6.71W with output wavelength of 2014.2nm and beam quality factor of M2=3.6 was obtained.

Abstract:The thermal stress effects of the diode-end-pumped Nd:YLF slab laser crystals are numerically investigated. The theoretical model is established by considering the divergence of the pump beam in the slab and the additional heat generated in the upconversion. Using the three dimensional finite element analyses, accurate numerical solutions based on the theoretical model are achieved. Our analyses focuses on the thermal fracture damage of the Nd:YLF slab under both the lasing and non-lasing conditions, and the predicted values are compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The combination of volumetric heating of the laser material by the absorbed pump radiation and surface cooling required for heat extraction leads to a no uniform temperature distribution in the rod. With the coactions of pump field and coolant, the temperature gradient is formed within laser working medium, and then the thermal effects including thermal lens, thermal stress birefringence, etc. They all seriously restrict the output characteristics of laser. The uniform temperature field distribution in laser working medium weakens the influences of thermal effects in laser. The thermal effect of Tm: YAG laser generated by laser-diode pumping the Tm: YAG crystal is analyzed. After considering the quasi three-level structure of the crystal and the distribution of transmission power in the cavity, a more actual temperature field in the crystal is obtained by revamping the heat conversion coefficient. The thermal effects mechanics were analyzed at first, and then the physical and mathematical thermal analysis models were established based on the theoretical knowledge of thermal effects in LD pumped Tm: YAG laser. The method can be applied to the laser thermal effect research of quasi three-level. The analysis and the result can be referred to the thermal effect research of the solid state laser end-pumped by the LD and the optimal design of resonant cavity.

Abstract:Using blue laser diodes (LDs) to pump Pr:YLF crystals can directly realize visible-band laser output. Compared with the traditional frequency doubling and LD direct output method, it has the advantages of simple design, compact structure, and high beam quality. For solid-state lasers, pump-induced thermal effects of gain media are the principal limiting factors for the desired high-power output. In this paper, internal temperature space model distribution of a rectangular cross-section Pr:YLF crystal is established. On this basis, the temperature distribution, thermal stress distribution, and thermal focal length variation of single-end pumped and double-end pumped laser crystals are analyzed. The results are verified by COMSOL simulations and experimental measurements. To our knowledge, this analysis is the first to examine the thermal effect of a rectangular cross-section Pr:YLF crystal, analyzing the limit power that the crystal can withstand, which paves the way for better performances of visible lasers with stable and high-power output.

Abstract:In high-power laser systems, thermal lensing effects and thermal birefringence in laser gain media significantly impact beam quality and stability. This study simulates different end-capped structures of Nd:YAG gain media to assess their effect on thermal characteristics. Thermal lensing effects were evaluated through optical path differences and thermal focal lengths, while thermal birefringence effects were assessed using depolarization losses. Results show that diamond cap can reduce the peak temperature of the gain medium by 30.0 K. Optical path difference and thermal focal length changes confirm that diamond caps can minimize the thermal lensing effect. Moreover, the reduction of the depolarization loss suggests a reduction in the polarization state. Futhermore, this paper explores the optimization of diamond geometry to enhance laser system stability. Larger diamond radii and thicknesses prove more effective in diminishing optical path differences and depolarization loss, with changes in radius showing a significant impact on thermal performance. This research enhances laser stability and performance and lays a theoretical foundation for future laser thermal management strategies.

Abstract:Wavelength around 940 nm lasing can be obtained by quasi-three-level operation of Nd doped laser crystal. Diode end pumping provides the necessary high pump intensity in the laser crystal. In order to get high efficiency of the end pumped laser system, the overlap coefficient between pump beam and laser beam should be optimized. Thermal lens coefficient is one of the most important parameters to design the laser cavity structure. The time dependent heat conduction equation is solved numerically in order to study the thermal lens effect in pulsed pumping laser crystal. Calculated results showed that the thermal lens coefficients change with different pump frequencies. Experiments are done with Nd: YAG and Nd: GSAG laser rod. The thermal lens coefficient of Nd: YAG at pump frequency 50 Hz with pump beam diameter 1.5 mm is 10.2 Wm, while the thermal lens coefficient of Nd: GSAG at pump frequency 50 Hz with pump beam diameter 1.75 mm is 5.9 Wm.

Abstract:According to the reflective LD-end-pumped Nd:YAG ceramic laser, a model for double absorption of thin disk crystal was built up.Based on the theory of thermal conduction,the temperature field distribution and the gradient of temperature distribution were numerically simulated by finite element analysis.Some factors affecting the temperature of crystal were studied.It can be shown that the temperature field distribution in the Nd:YAG ceramic crystal depends on the power and the radii of the pump laser,the thickness of the crystal,as well as the cooling methods.

Abstract:In order to research the thermal effect problem incurred by diode lasers double-end pumped laser crystal, a thermal model of axially heated cylindrical laser crystal with a fixed boundary temperature was built. Based on the heat conduct equation, the general solutions of laser crystal temperature field and pump-face thermal distortion field were obtained by the semi-analytical solution. Some factors, such as pump power, pump spot size and crystal Nd-ion doped quality index, which influence on the crystal temperature field and pump-face thermal distortion field, were analyzed. The result shows that when increasing the pump powers, reducing the size of pump spot and adding Nd-ion doped quality index, the temperature raise and the thermal distortion of pump-face will all be increased. With the same pump conditions, the medial section temperature raise of 0.5% (mass fraction) Nd-ion doped neodymium-doped yttrium orthovanadate crystal is higher than other doped quality index.

Abstract:The laser diode (LD) end-pumped solid-state lasers with excellent output characteristics are extensively used in many fields. The thermal effects of the laser crystal are one of the key factors preventing the laser from achieving high-quality output. In this paper, the thermal effects of a laser at 1 kHz repetition rate were explored by developing a three-dimensional thermal model of an end-quasi-continuous waves (QCW) LD pumped Nd: YAG crystal. Considering the radial and axial heat conduction of the laser crystal, the transient temperature field within the crystal was numerically calculated using a seven-point finite difference method (FDM). The transient thermal effects of the composite crystal were compared with those of the non-composite crystal. The effects of different parameters on the transient thermal effects of the composite crystal were discussed in detail. This simulation work is believed to guide the design of thermally stable cavities for lasers operating at muti-kHz to attain favorable laser characteristics.

Abstract:By studying the theory of heat conduction, we established the transient heat conduction equation for a pulsed laser diode (LD) end pumped thulium doped laser. Combined with the actual working environment of a pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod, the expressions of transient temperature distribution and the time-varying thermal focal length were obtained by the integral transform method and the method of separation of variables. Under 240 mJ pump energy and repetition rates of 80, 90, and 100 Hz, thermal effects in the pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod were simulated, and the thermal lens focal length of the single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod was measured in experiments. The theoretical analysis was verified by the comparison between the theoretical results and the experimental results.
Investigation on temperature and thermal lens effects of laser diode pumped composite YAG rods

Abstract:Temperature field and thermal lens effect of laser diode end pumped composite Nd∶YAG rod were investigated through numerical analysis methods.Numerical solutions of temperature field were obtained.The maximum temperature was 73.8℃ for composite laser crystal with an absorption coefficient of 3.5/cm,under pump power of 18W with 0.2mm beam radius.And also phase-retardation distribution ΔΦt(r)of the axial transmission light caused by radial temperature gradients was obtained.Comparing with conventional rod,the results show that composite rod leads a lower temperature rise in laser rod,as well as reduces distortion of pump end which brings on lens effect of laser crystal.Phase-retardation distribution ΔΦt(r) in composite rod is similar to that of conventional laser rod,but it doesn't accord with radius quadratic relationship,there is an aberration Δφ between the phase retardation of the thermal lens and referenced spherical lens.ΔΦt(r) corresponds with that of a spherical lens approximately at r<wp,and the equivalent foci fGRIN approaches to the same value of conventional rod,whereas Δφ increases quickly with the increase of laser beam radius at r>wp.
Study on Optical Characteristics of Nd:YVO4/YVO4 Composite Crystal Laser

Abstract:Thermal effect in crystals is the main obstacle blocking diode-pumped solid state laser to get high and stable output power. Diffusion bonding crystal has been demonstrated to be an effective method to relieve the thermal lensing theoretically based on the numerical heat analysis to the end-pumped anisotropic laser crystal. The temperature distributions in Nd:YVO4/YVO4 composite crystal and conventional crystal were analyzed and compared. The end-pumped Nd:YVO4/YVO4 composite crystal laser was designed and set up with z-cavity. The maximum output powers of 9.87 W at 1064 nm and 6.14 W at 532 nm were obtained at the incident pump power of 16.5 W. The highest optical-optical conversion efficiencies were up to 59.8% at 1064 nm and 37.2% at 532 nm respectively.
