Abstract:Background and Objective: Photo-thermal converters have been successfully used in laser surgery; however, most of the currently used converters are likely to be damaged in the operations due to various problems, preventing them from being efficiently and repeatedly used in laser thermotherapy. Aiming to solve these problems, we report a new type of fiber-optic photo-thermal converter with higher stability.Study Design/Materials and Methods: A laser-pumped highly Nd3+-doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG) crystal fiber tip had been fabricated for photo-thermal conversion by means of phonon relaxation. The 15at.% neodymium-doped near cylindrical YAG crystal fiber tip, with maximum diameter of 1.1 mm and length of 2.7 mm, was fabricated on a 1 mm-thick 42 mm-long pure YAG single crystal fiber by laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method.Results and Conclusion: Pumping by a Ti:Sapphire laser with central wavelength of 805 nm, the tip generated a temperature rise of 15degreesC in egg white with pumping power of 710 mW, the tip temperature increased approximately linearly with the increased pumping power. The distribution of the temperature in two media had also been measured. Experimental results indicated that the tip was promising for laser thermotherapy applications. (C) 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The refractive index distribution in laser crystal is simulated. The figures of laser waist and thermal focus length dependence on pump power are received, too.

Abstract:Considering the kinetic and fluid dynamic processes in the gain medium, a theoretical model is established to describe the mechanism of thermal-lensing effect in an exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser. The three-dimensional distribution of temperature and index of refraction in the gain medium are depicted. The effective focal length and radius of thermal lens are predicted. Our simulation results show the thermal lens plays a non-negligible role in high-power XPCsLs and can be significantly aggravated in higher wall temperature, buffer pressure and pump intensity. The divergence of laser beam influenced by thermal lens is also made in detail. This model is helpful for in-depth understanding of the thermal-lensing effect in XPALs.

Abstract:The thermal effects of LD end-pumped Nd:YAG high-repetition-rate solid laser during the optical pumping are the important factor which affects the laser output characteristic and the system integrated performance. Starting with the thermal conduction function, the numerical value of temperature steady distributing in the laser crystal is found by the finite element method. And thermal lens effect is counted and analyzed. Then the separate parameters design of thermal insensitive cavity is processed to compensate the thermal lens effect by the propagation-circle and transform-circle graphic analysis and design method. The study establishes the base for optimizing the design of laser to improve the stabilization of laser output.

Abstract:Assuming the pump light to be Gaussian beam and considering the nonlinear absorption of the medium, we establish the heat conduction model to describe the thermal effects in a double end-pumped Cs vapor laser. Combined with the experimental parameters, the radial temperature distribution and accordingly the optical path difference under different pump powers are obtained by numerically solving the model. Furthermore, the influence of operating parameters on the thermal focal length is investigated.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic thermal source, consisting of a Nd3+ doped fiber tip and a pure YAG crystal fiber that grown by LHPG(Laser heated pedestal growth) method, had been studied for laser surgery applications. Pumping by a CuBr laser, the thermal source generated temperature as high as 520 degreesC with stability of better than 4% (absolute temperature), the thermal response of the thermal source is about 3 seconds, and the temperature can be controlled by the input laser power. Experimental results show that, the fiber-optic thermal source is promising for laser surgery applications, and is expected to avoid overheating that likely to happen in direct laser tissue interactions.

Abstract:The thermal effects of the diode end-pumped Nd:YVO4 slab laser crystal are investigated both analytically and numerically. The theoretical model is established with considering the divergence of the pump beam in the slab. A detailed theoretical analysis of the temperature, stress and the focal length of thermal lens are presented. Using 3D finite element analysis, an accurate numerical solution based on the theoretical model is achieved. Our analysis includes the thermal fracture damage of the thermally and optically anisotropic slab and the predicated values are compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The thermal stress effects of the diode-end-pumped Nd:YLF slab laser crystals are numerically investigated. The theoretical model is established by considering the divergence of the pump beam in the slab and the additional heat generated in the upconversion. Using the three dimensional finite element analyses, accurate numerical solutions based on the theoretical model are achieved. Our analyses focuses on the thermal fracture damage of the Nd:YLF slab under both the lasing and non-lasing conditions, and the predicted values are compared with the experimental results.

Abstract:The thermal effect of nonlinear crystal KTP is discussed in this paper. The thermal focal length of KTP in the F/F resonant cavity is calculated 853mm theoretically under the maximal pumping power 180W.At the same time,we optimized the design of the resonant cavity with the results mentioned above.In the experiment,we adopted 9 LD bars each of which has 20W output power to side pump single Nd:YAG stick,single Q-switch.And it is the first time,to our best knowledge,to use highly active convex-convex resonant cavity structure,which realized M~2 factor 3.16,the output power stability of the laser RMS 0.781% and the 16W average output power after assuming appropriate coolant system.

Abstract:Thermal effects of Nd:YVO4 and KTP on a laser-diode end pumped intracavity frequency-doubled laser were presented. The phase-retardation effects of Nd:YVO4 was highlighted in this paper. 133.6 mW of green fundamental spatial mode light has been generated with a light to light conversion efficiency of 22.1% when the incident pump power was 604.2 mW.

Abstract:Thermal effects are the main obstacle for side-pumped direct-liquid-cooled Nd: YAG thin-disk lasers (SDNTDLs) to achieve high-power near-diffraction-limited laser output. A multiphysics model is established and several basic understandings are obtained. The temperature distribution of the disk under lateral non-uniform pumping shows that the total reflection transmission of the pump lights in the disk does not result in severe temperature fluctuations. The thickness of the thermal boundary layer is much less than half the thickness of the fluid, indicating that there is no thermal interaction between two adjacent disks. The component analysis of the thermally-induced wavefront aberration (TIWA) reveals that the influence of the fluid's thermo-optic effect (TOE) which is awful in liquid lasers is not necessarily dominant in SDNTDLS due to the thin thermal boundary layer. When cooled by D 2 O, the wavefront aberration induced by the disk is much larger than that induced by the fluid. As a result, the TIWA exhibits a distribution of high at both sides and low at the center along the transverse direction of the disk, which is consistent with the experimental results. The wavefront aberration induced by the fluid's TOE and that induced by the disk's both TOE and deformation compensate for each other, indicating that the beam quality can be significantly improved by means of design optimization.

Abstract:The designing construction of Nd∶glass laser cavity is double flashlamp pumped,symmetrical,close coupling and unfocused.The cooling channels of Nd∶glass rod are separated from water-cooling channels of flashlamp independently.Through 10s experiment,laser beam patterns have been measured at 10Hz repetition rate and 250μs pulse duration of two flashlamps for 900W pump power in heat capacity operation and general water-cooling operation successively.16 facular pictures have been collected from total 100 facular pictures in same interval.The contrastive facular pictures show that the thermal lens effect of heat capacity operation is negative lens effect not same as convex effect of general water-cooling operation.The obtained result is favor of the deferent characteristic of Nd∶glass laser in heat capacity operation.

Abstract:The combination of volumetric heating of the laser material by the absorbed pump radiation and surface cooling required for heat extraction leads to a no uniform temperature distribution in the rod. With the coactions of pump field and coolant, the temperature gradient is formed within laser working medium, and then the thermal effects including thermal lens, thermal stress birefringence, etc. They all seriously restrict the output characteristics of laser. The uniform temperature field distribution in laser working medium weakens the influences of thermal effects in laser. The thermal effect of Tm: YAG laser generated by laser-diode pumping the Tm: YAG crystal is analyzed. After considering the quasi three-level structure of the crystal and the distribution of transmission power in the cavity, a more actual temperature field in the crystal is obtained by revamping the heat conversion coefficient. The thermal effects mechanics were analyzed at first, and then the physical and mathematical thermal analysis models were established based on the theoretical knowledge of thermal effects in LD pumped Tm: YAG laser. The method can be applied to the laser thermal effect research of quasi three-level. The analysis and the result can be referred to the thermal effect research of the solid state laser end-pumped by the LD and the optimal design of resonant cavity.

Abstract:We demonstrate that it is possible to pump an Ng-cut Yb:KGW crystal slab with up to 18W by a single emitter laser diode and still achieve a nearly diffraction limited output beam with a M(2) value below M(2) < 1.1 and optical to optical efficiencies of more than 44%. Furthermore, we have measured the focal length of thermally induced lenses in an Yb:KGW crystal slab which was end-pumped by 12 W and 18 W single-emitter diodes. We have observed that the focal lengths not only depend on the pump power and beam waists, but are also dependent on the specific diode beam profile, as well as the collimation optics. We have been able to correlate this behavior with specific patterns of the beam profile.

Abstract:The thermal effect and the heat generation in diode-end-pumped continuous-wave 914-nm Nd:YVO 4 lasers are investigated in detail.A theoretical model of a diode end-pumped solid-state laser is constructed to analyse the influence of fractional thermal loading on the thermal effect in the Nd:YVO 4 laser based on finite element analysis.The thermal focal lengths and the end-surface deformations of laser rods in Nd:YVO 4 quasi-three-level and four-level lasers are measured and compared with the results obtained by ordinary interferometry for the demonstration of higher thermal loading in 914-nm laser.Finally the fractional thermal loading in the Nd:YVO 4 quasi-three-level laser is calculated by matching the experimental and the simulated end deformations.

Abstract:By studying the theory of heat conduction, we established the transient heat conduction equation for a pulsed laser diode (LD) end pumped thulium doped laser. Combined with the actual working environment of a pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod, the expressions of transient temperature distribution and the time-varying thermal focal length were obtained by the integral transform method and the method of separation of variables. Under 240 mJ pump energy and repetition rates of 80, 90, and 100 Hz, thermal effects in the pulsed LD end pumped single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod were simulated, and the thermal lens focal length of the single-ended composite Tm:YAG rod was measured in experiments. The theoretical analysis was verified by the comparison between the theoretical results and the experimental results.

Abstract:The lasing properties of Nd∶KGW crystal in free running mode with different transmission of the output couplers are reported. The best results have been obtained with the output coupler of 24% transmission. The slope efficiency is 1.0% and the extrapolated energy threshold is 0.54 J. A comparative experiment of Nd∶KGW and Nd∶YAG laser crystals has been cavried out under identical experimental conditions in both free running and Q switched modes. The much higher efficiency and the lower threshold for Nd∶KGW (Nd: 2.2 at. %) compared to Nd∶YAG (Nd: 1.1 at. %) at 1 064 μm are demonstrated in both operation mode.
Study on Optical Characteristics of Nd:YVO4/YVO4 Composite Crystal Laser

Abstract:Thermal effect in crystals is the main obstacle blocking diode-pumped solid state laser to get high and stable output power. Diffusion bonding crystal has been demonstrated to be an effective method to relieve the thermal lensing theoretically based on the numerical heat analysis to the end-pumped anisotropic laser crystal. The temperature distributions in Nd:YVO4/YVO4 composite crystal and conventional crystal were analyzed and compared. The end-pumped Nd:YVO4/YVO4 composite crystal laser was designed and set up with z-cavity. The maximum output powers of 9.87 W at 1064 nm and 6.14 W at 532 nm were obtained at the incident pump power of 16.5 W. The highest optical-optical conversion efficiencies were up to 59.8% at 1064 nm and 37.2% at 532 nm respectively.

Abstract:Using blue laser diodes (LDs) to pump Pr:YLF crystals can directly realize visible-band laser output. Compared with the traditional frequency doubling and LD direct output method, it has the advantages of simple design, compact structure, and high beam quality. For solid-state lasers, pump-induced thermal effects of gain media are the principal limiting factors for the desired high-power output. In this paper, internal temperature space model distribution of a rectangular cross-section Pr:YLF crystal is established. On this basis, the temperature distribution, thermal stress distribution, and thermal focal length variation of single-end pumped and double-end pumped laser crystals are analyzed. The results are verified by COMSOL simulations and experimental measurements. To our knowledge, this analysis is the first to examine the thermal effect of a rectangular cross-section Pr:YLF crystal, analyzing the limit power that the crystal can withstand, which paves the way for better performances of visible lasers with stable and high-power output.

Abstract:Temperature and stress distribution of Nd:YVO4 crystal are simulated according to the difference of optical absorption properties of Nd:YVO4 crystals pumped by 808 nm and 888 nm,respectively.The changes of crystal temperature distribution and thermal focal length are also simulated when the pumping beam polarization components in a-axis and c-axis are changed.From simulation results,the crystal temperature gradient with 888 nm pump-wavelength is one sixth than that of 808 nm and the crystal temperature stress value is much less than that of 808 nm pump-wavelength.The resonator and output power are not affected by the change of pumping beam's polarization because the light absorption coefficients on a-axis and c-axis of Nd:YVO4 are the same when pump wavelength is 888 nm.This is one of the effective ways to reduce Nd:YVO4 crystals thermal effect and increase Nd:YVO4 laser power with 888 nm pump-wavelength.
